This little place was so cool! They had so many surfboard options for me and once I found the perfect board, I ended up spending about half as much as I would have on a new board. Well I better update this as I have gotten another three boards from Tyler! First off I am a long boarder but wanted to step down my board size so I could surf my local break El Porto. Got a great 8ft Dan Colby that rips at Porto, Huntington, Zeros etc. Second was a board that I could travel with. I planed a trip through Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica and El Salvador so I wanted a board that was durable and lightweight. He had two great options for me a bisect (splits in half) or an epoxy board by surftech. I went with the SurfTech and was not disappointed. That thing withstood busses, planes, mopeds and some seriously gnarly wipeouts. The last board is a beauty. My beloved 9ft Terry Senate quad met its demise on a very large day at C street so it was time for me to invest in a new big wave board for California. Ty found an awesome custom for me from Epic surf boards. Chimed rails, 2+1 or quad set up (love that) perfect width and paddles like a dream! If he dose not have exactly what your looking for give him the specs or an idea and he will keep an eye out for you. I was recently in the L A area on vacation and decided to give surfing a try. I have always wanted to try surfing but was hesitant because of my fitness level and age. Tyler was a very good teacher, guiding me step by step through the process. Not only did I ride a few waves in on my knees, I actually got up on my feet. I really dig this surf school. So far I have had two excellent lessons from Mike, one of the Manhattan beach instructors. Not only is Mike a great teacher of the technique of surfing--he also imparts the ethos of the surf life. On our first lesson we came across a beached sea lion. On the walk to and from the lesson he gave me a lesson in ecology and global warming as to why the sea lion was there. Mike is really showing me how to read a wave and catch more and more waves. Picked up a used board from Tyler last weekend. As far as used boards go, I'd say you'd be hard-pressed to find a better operation anywhere in the LA area. Spontaneously on the 4th of July this year I decided I needed a long board; I had just learned to surf at a camp in Mexico and got bitten by the surf bug, big time! I met Tyler through a girlfriend who took a lesson with him and she raved about how great he is as an instructor. My husband and I joined his first surf trip to El Salvador. It was awesome!! We surfed three times a day for 10 days. It was the biggest and best surf I've been in to date. I'd consider myself an intermediate skilled surfer and Tyler was able to push me to take my skills to the next level. There were a number of great boards to choose from and he helped us select a good one based on our skill level and what we were wanting to accomplish on the trip. We also were able to experience the culture of El Salvador with side trips to go hiking, markets and festivals, and even have local chefs make dinner at the beautiful house we stayed at. He was very open to suggestions and was flexible and accomodating on what everyone in the group wanted to do. Back in LA, I always reach out to Tyler if I'm looking for a board. I always wanted to learn how to surf but only had a few months to do so before taking off for school. Tyler was the perfect teacher and took my brother and I through all the surfing basics step by step. He was patient and incredibly informative and helpful. Any surf instructor can help you catch waves for a day, but if your goal is to become an independent surfer, these are you guys! I came to Tyler at One Wave because I wanted to be trained, not just paddled out and pushed into waves for an hour. He has a set training program for people who want to become independent surfers. And thanks to him and Jake, I'm now able to go out and surf on my own! These guys are very genuine people, they want you to improve, but will always make sure you are comfortable and safe. I was looking for a used 9ft Longboard and they had a really nice selection. Tyler asked questions about my surfing experience and from that information he chose a couple of boards he thought would be good for me. I ended up with a Stewart surfboard that came with fins and was in great condition. I've surfed a few times on the board and I already love it! What a great board...easy to engage with the wave and great on the turns. A couple of surfing friends were asking me how much I paid and they thought it was a really fair price. We bought two boards and surf lessons from Tyler. We returned one of the boards after one use because it was clearly taking in water. His response was, "whoa, you guys rocked this board. It's busted up." We did no such thing. I had it out in the water for less than an hour, never even bumped the board. So basically, he sold us a beat up board. The surf lesson was lackluster: the teacher was late and ended the class early. I think it's an ok place to get a used board, but I would take someone with you who really knows boards so that you don't get sold a lemon. read more

Had a great lesson in Ventura with Jake. He was running a bit late (traffic from LA) but gave us plenty of notice so we weren't waiting around wondering. Tyler is the one you need to move forward in your surf goals, with strong foundations and then follow through. He is not just a great surfer trying to make money, he's an adept teacher as well. Trying to find the 'right' surfboard can be incredibly overwhelming. There are so many variables to take into consideration, which is why finding an experienced surfer like Tyler with OneWave was a huge advantage for me. He was incredibly responsive and easy to get in touch with, first and foremost so great first impression. We met and based on what he knew about my skill level, experience, challenges, etc, he had already set out various options for boards when I arrived. He spent 1:1 time asking me a few simple questions to help with his analysis, then had me actually pick up boards and shared an explanation as to why I was going through these exercises. I ended up with a gorgeous used 7'9" Gary Linden for a great price, and have been catching waves ever since. I went from weeks on end on a shorter board (6'8" not catching anything) to endless waves on my Gary Linden, Equipment is EVERYTHING and we often step to a shorter board too early. I definitely recommend these guys if you are interested in purchasing a used board, the experience was worth it and the end result (me catching waves again after many sessions of no waves) obviously proved that he knows his stuff. I bought a longboard from Tyler this summer and had terrific experience! He was easy to get a hold of, over the phone, and told me to swing by his place the next day.
