Stopped by here during a work trip to get a quick afternoon workout from climbing in...completely unprepared: forgot my gear at home (another state away lol). Luckily the staff was friendly and helpful with getting me set up with a (comfy Petzel!) rental harness and shoes. Check in and cash out was quick & easy. With the auto belay system for several routes of varying difficulty (I was able to do several within my skill range - 5.6 - 5.8) and attempt a couple of 5.9s) you could easily spend a few hours here even solo. I just had an hour but mission accomplished: several climbs fully completed, a couple attempted, and a good workout to break up hours of work travel. The gym was clean, the climbs were interesting, and the helpful staff was appreciated. Will definitely visit while traveling through again! read more

As someone who had never even seen a climbing wall in person, much less actually climbed, I was was dubious of husband's request for a date at Onsight Rock Gym. I ended up having a blast! Don't hesitate to try this place just because you're an adult who has never climbed. The staff is super helpful. Furthermore, there is such a good vibe among the patrons. I think the nicest people in Knoxville must be climbers, because there was a real sense of comradery. Despite struggling at first, I never felt self-conscious. The other reviews have done a pretty thorough job describing the general awesomeness of Onsight Rock Gym, so I'll focus on the kids area. On my most recent visit, I brought my 2 year old son for the first time. He was beside himself with excitement. At the top of the mini bouldering wall is a platform with a slide. This is a great feature, especially for toddlers, because I didn't have to worry about how I was going to get him down once at the top out of my reach. We got a late start, so we didn't attempt the kids walls that require a climbing harness. At only $6 for child admission, we'll definitely go back! If you're looking for an activity that appeals to a broad age group of kiddos, I'd say climbing at Onsight Rock Gym is the #1 option in Knoxville! read more

I brought my niece here over the Thanksgiving holiday for a little one on one time and to get away from a house with 10 people! Her special request for Auntie day was sushi & rock climbing. I chose Onsight because they have a dedicated kids climbing area that wouldn't interfere with the adult climbs, which are in a separate area. Everyone has to watch a safety video before beginning. You can rent all the equipment you need/want, but we just rented harnesses and climbed in our sneaks. Since she is a minor, we filled out online waivers prior to arriving. Kids under 13 are only allowed to auto-belay, and are not allowed to take lessons. Despite this, she still had a fantastic time! There were seven separate paths in the kids area that had pulley based autobelay cords suspended from the ceiling. There is also a small bouldering wall with a play area once you climb over the top and a slide to slide down. This is all housed in the event space that can be rented for parties. We didn't venture out into the adult area much, but there were probably a dozen or more paths, and a separate bouldering area. There are cubbies in the main area and lockers (bring your own lock!) in the women's restroom (and presumably in the men's as well. The staff were super friendly & helpful. Prices were reasonable! We were in town visiting family and would definitely return! read more

Holy crap! This place rocks! Get it?! It rocks....because it's a rock climbing gym. Ok...let's pretend that I never attempted that joke. I don't know anything technical about climbing. I have climbed at a couple of other gyms, both locally and out of state. What I know for a fact is that this place is legit. From the moment I walked in, I was put at ease with the level of professionalism by each and every staff member. They want you to have a blast, but that is never compromised for safety. This place is huge, and I really enjoy the pretty substantial bouldering area. They have plenty of areas for beginners to try their hand at climbing and there is no shortage of uber hard stuff for the seasoned climbers that are looking for a challenge. What a super fun place to spend a Friday night. I don't climb rock walls. I hike. I bike. I run races. I kayak. But I don't climb rock walls, until tonight. After getting the orientation, my climbing gear, and a super cool bag chalk, we headed to the walls. We started out with what they call the advanced staircase. It's a relatively easy climb to the top. And I felt rather accomplished after doing it. (Note: do you want to climb on the rocks that have the grippy things. The Belayer called it slaw hands. Whatever the proper terminology is, you want to make sure that you can grab a hold of the rock with your hands. Avoid the yellow rocks at all cost.) After I conquered the advanced staircase, the Belayer encouraged me to take on the vertical 52 foot while. I chose to go up on the blue rocks. Oh my gosh I made it to the top. But not without a lot of encouragement from the people standing on the floor. After this task, and a decent length break to recover my arms, I tackled the 55 foot wall which included a ceiling and several other obstacles. It was out of control hard. But I made it up over the top of the ceiling before I finally sat back and made my way down the wall. Not successful. I blame my spaghetti arms and blistered hands. I had the most fun ever. The Belayers were fantastic. Not one time did I feel like I couldn't do it. Not one time did I feel like they were laughing at me. Not one time did I feel inferior to far more experienced climbers. And to top it off, not one time did I ever feel in danger. I knew that the Belayer always had me. If I fell, they had me. If I needed a break to rest, they had me. The gym is super clean, smells wonderful, and all the staff are friendly, and helpful, and gracious. I honestly can't think of anything more fun to do on a Friday night. Now get on over to OnSight Rock gym. I'll race you to the top. read more

I had never been rock climbing (indoor or outdoor) before going to Onsight so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had such a great time. Myself and a couple girlfriends went. Both my friends had previous climbing experience, and we all had a great time. The facility is huge with some smaller climbing walls as well as large climbing walls. Both the smaller and larger walls have varying degrees of difficulty for all skill levels. There are also harnesses and shoes to rent for a very reasonable price. The staff was very nice and helpful, and the facility was clean and open. I really had a great time. I really enjoyed climbing and I can't wait to go again! read more

We've enjoyed going there for over a year with our 9 y/o but it's over-priced for families. Mixed experience since a lot of people don't have common sense etiquette and let their kids run wild which really takes away from the room where kids can climb at a beginning level. It seems like people just drop the kids off in there and don't care at all about how they are yelling and running roughshod over other kids who are inexperienced or very cautious about the new experience. Running around playing tag instead of climbing. Management didn't seem to care when I talked to them about it. read more

This place is a first rate climbing gym. It is set up well to cater to the entire spectrum of climbers. For the beginner climber there are plenty of moderates 5.6-5.10 and a generous amount of top ropes. Even the most experienced leader will be happy with plenty of lead only terrain (52' tall) with many routes in the 5.11-5.13 range. It also has an excellent separate bouldering area and a separate area for kids with that is shorter and contains auto belays. The best part is they keep refreshing the routes constantly and throughly clean the holds before reusing them!!!! It seems like an average of about 10 new routes a week and the holds in the route area are always crisp and clean. This is the best I have ever seen at a climbing gym. The staff is great and the customers as well. I couldn't ask for a better local climbing gym! read more

Woah what a fun exercise! This is how all rock climbing facilities should be! I tried indoor rock climbing once in college and I was not a fan. Mostly because I have a HUGE fear of heights. I was hesitant to come but my fear never stops me. I started with a 5.6 and advanced to a 5.8! So how did I gain the courage to do so? Well, I didn't come here to watch people climb..yes I was extremely scared. Similar to when I needed my hand held to climb the top of the mountain at the end of the hike. So how did I manage to get to the top? Well, I would like to give credit to the staff. There was no way I would've had the courage to do so without them. First I love that it's a rope system and I don't have to climb my way down because that was probably the part I hated the most. I struggled a lot during my first climb because I lacked confidence but once I made it 3/4 of the way, I realized how safe it was. Keep in mind, the height thing still bothered me. The staff provided positive support throughout the whole journey. When I debated for another climb, all staff encouraged me to do so. Everyone is so willing to help here! So I tried it, scared as heck, but did it! I definitely felt more confident after my first climb and it was a work out! My forearms felt like it was arm day at the gym! High lights: super attentive and supportive staff, rope system, colorful, spacious, lots of levels. Thank you for changing my view of rock climbing! read more

Took all 3 of my kids and they had a blast. It's a little expensive, it cost us about $100 for the 4 of us, however we had the all day pass and ended up spending about 5 hours. The service was great and the workers were very friendly. Overall the gym was clean and the walls had great routes with varying degrees of difficulty. They offered over 7 routes with auto belay. After signing up my seven year old daughter for one of their weekly clubs I decided to try out one of their summer weekly camps. I would highly recommend both! She has loved her club - learning all the technical stuff while getting a workout in and making new friends. And the summer camp boosted her confidence all the more. It's been so fun to watch her become so comfortable tying herself in and climbing like a little Spiderman. Additionally, the kid's room is FANTASTIC. Every week I purchase my 5-year-old a tot pass so she can climb while I get work done. It's a win-win for all of us. read more

A rainy day adventure for the kids. We are members of a rock climbing club back in Northrn California so were excited to see this as an option in Eastern Tn. Got a groupon for this climb and it turned out great. Gym has 3 places you can climb: bouldering, climbing walls, and smaller room with auto belay devices. The auto belay devices allow solo climbers to climb without needing a partner to belay. The gym was great in that the walls are high, 65', its professionally run, and staff was friendly. Amazing experience at a very reasonable price. We brought our three small kids (3.5, 5, 6.5) here on a rainy afternoon so they could get a physical activity out of the house. We've never been rock climbing before, but our monkeys love to climb so we thought we would give it a try. First off, the facility is very impressive: tall, colorful, clean, and well-maintained. Second, the staff were really easy to work with, and helped make us feel comfortable trying out a new activity. They're strict about the rules - waivers, orientation, and video - but this made us feel like they took our safety seriously. After all that, we turned the kids loose on a bouldering wall (bouldering = no ropes) just for kids, which had a slide at the top to get down. This is the same area where they host birthday parties. The kids climbed on that for almost two hours until we had to pull them off when a kids class began in our area of the gym. We thought we were done, but then Christian (who I believe is one of the owners) approached us and asked if the kids wanted to try out the big wall. He brought out harnesses and gave all three a chance at the big wall while he belayed them. He was a wonderful instructor to the kids and really put them at ease. We will definitely be back! read more
