With the auto belay system for several routes of varying difficulty (I was able to do several within my skill range - 5.6 - 5.8) and attempt a couple of 5.9s) you could easily spend a few hours here even solo. I just had an hour but mission accomplished: several climbs fully completed, a couple attempted, and a good workout to break up hours of work travel. The gym was clean, the climbs were interesting, and the helpful staff was appreciated. Will definitely visit while traveling through again!

That said... don't let the short hike fool you! The walk down isn't bad--it's the climb back up that will definitely remind you whether you've been keeping up with your cardio. Thankfully, there are handrails and benches along the trail because I absolutely took advantage of them on the way back. I thought I was in decent shape... the mountain quickly humbled me! My advice: wear good hiking shoes, bring water, and if you have a walking stick, use it. A neck fan isn't a bad idea either during the warmer months. Just because you see people tackling the trail in Crocs or flip-flops doesn't mean it's a good idea. If you're adventurous, there is a way to get down to the base of the falls, where people were swimming, but we admired it from the overlook instead. The surrounding mountain views are beautiful as well, making it an easy stop even if you're just passing through. If you're in the Bryson City/Cherokee area, don't skip Soco Falls. Just come prepared, take your time, and enjoy one of the prettiest waterfalls in Western North Carolina.

The parking area is by the road, and the hike down to the falls is short, but of considerable grade. At the end, a platform allows viewing. You can't get anywhere near the falls or take a swim, and it seems like it would be a tough area even if there weren't a thousand signs telling you not to wander off the trail, which is shared with a driveway to some private property. It certainly isn't among the best Western NC waterfalls, but it's a nice site and it's free and open to the public, so not a bad place to stop depending on one's itinerary.

There are a LOT of stairs, and when it's humid you will need to stop for breaks along the way. The final view is closed from fires but they have a reconstructed viewpoint near the end that is gorgeous - the views of the mountainside are stunning. I contacted Alex a little bit last minute, as we had previously planned on going to a different, more self navigable trail. Had heard a lot of neat things about KUW, and had Alex's Knoxville Outdoor Tours recommended by the local MTB organization, Appalachian Mountain Bike Club(AMBC). Even though I kinda got him last minute, Alex was very accommodating and got my ride set up. After riding KUW with Alex, I can tell you, I'm SO glad I procured the services of a guide to ride it. It would take riding there on a regular basis for a while (as Alex clearly has) to get to know all the rights and lefts and in between's!! Plus, Alex knows what's what as far as downhill, cross country, mix of both, and can plan your ride accordingly. Do you want to go 8 miles or 18 miles? Alex will set you up. He's awesome about warning about hazards, twists/turns, trees (above and below), etc., that you might come up on suddenly. He stops as needed. He had snacks and extra water if needed. Alex had a ton of recommendations of where to get after ride food and beverages, and also sights to see in Knoxville area. We went to SoKno Taco Cantina (right up the street from the trailhead we rode from), and I had a beer specially brewed for the AMBC group, called Best Medicine. I also had the burrito platter as suggested by Alex after he kicked my butt for 15 miles!! Lol!! And last, but most importantly, Alex was just a blast and a true pleasure to ride with. I had so much fun, and can NOT say enough good things about this experience!! If you are visiting the area, and want to ride Knoxville Urban Wilderness, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't use KNOT guide services. I promise you, it is worth EVERY penny!! When you reach the top the left side is the "easier" side up to the top and the right side is more stone stairs that is a shorter distance, but tougher climb. We took the left side going up and down. There are large rock areas along the way, which might make it difficult if you have mobility problems. Otherwise, it was a bit wet on the path in places, but it had rained a good bit of the day before. The whole path is a light incline the entire way up, but an easy decline on the way down. There are no sitting areas along the path when you reached the top there are two overlooked areas. The better view is the one all the way to the right there is a sign, noting the continental divide on either side of White side Mountain very cool. It was definitely worth the hike. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the top. I saw people with dogs and children a lot. It is a very family friendly activity.
