There's a huge line to get anything here, the music is way too loud, and the coffee is mediocre at best. I came in at 10 AM and there were around 25 people in front of me in line. They were very slow and getting customers through the line, and while they weren't rude they certainly weren't cheerful and friendly either. After agreeing to their checkout tablet's coercive 21% tip on my drink, I noticed on my receipt that Onyx also added in a 4% charge for "Employee Benefits". That's on top of all the other sales tax added on. After all that they didn't even give me what I ordered. Without asking me, or even clarifying, they gave me a flat white instead of a cappuccino. I'll never forget the first time I walked into Onyx coffee lab. I felt like I was walking into a Chem lab. It gave the impression that this place really took coffee seriously. It might've been 2019 to the best of my recollection and since that first time Bentonville has grown explosively but Onyx remains and appears to be as successful as ever. Today we had just a house coffee which I know is boring but it was good. We also ordered an almond croissant and a coconut mango croissant. The almond croissant had a generous amount of almond paste filling where the coconut mango was generous with the coconut on the outside but pretty sparse with the mango on the inside. But the basic croissant itself was very good. If you like to people watch this is a great place because there's a very long stretch of sidewalk facing windows with seating. This is a very cool coffee shop in downtown Bentonville. The vibes are upscale and so is the drink menu. Lots of options for every palate and some seasonal rotations as well. I had a FOMO and my wife had an Onyx Delight. The FOMO was quite the surprise having some amazing flavor infused cold foam on top. It was delicious! The bottom half was a bit less desirable. I am not sure what all went into the actual espresso portion but it seems like a watered down Americano with an off putting after taste. My wife enjoyed the Onyx Delight over all. I'm picky about chai, and it was good, not a disappointment as many coffee shop chai drinks are. Lovely to visit on a farmers market morning as it is in 2-3 minutes walking distance from it. The decor is modern and industrial with dark geometric tiles and warm wood panels on the walls, and a partially exposed ceiling. In contrast, the service area has inviting bright white tiles that let you know just where to go to order. Patterned floating wood planks hover over the service area and fold around to the wall beside it. It is visually interesting and captivating! The front wall is line of windows that let in a lot of bright light with a bar lining the windows on one end and different seating arrangements on the other end. I initially had a really positive impression of Onyx after having their seasonal nitro cold brew tonic with orange and fig--one of my favorite coffee drinks I have ever had. The friendly baristas and the cute interior definitely contributed to that first experience, too. After slowly but surely making my way through its menu, I found there to be more misses than hits. There are some delicious and thoughtfully developed specialty drinks, like the tiramisu fomo and black salt mocha, but they only contain a whisper of coffee if you are someone who wants to actually taste it. I've chosen to add another shot of espresso at times and have had my drink come out to around $10, including tax and tip, which is pretty steep. Outside of coffee offerings, the matcha is pretty milky and watery (I'm not sure what I was expecting), and the gochugaru chai, although having a fun spicy finish, is still diluted. The downtown Bentonville location also offers some breakfast/brunch options (pastry case and hot sandwiches/bowls). I've tried their ham and cheese croissant (decent when heated up) and their breakfast sandwich (I think we were given the wrong item that day, because what we received had slaw and kalbi/bulgogi), which were both decent, but nothing I would order again. Overall, I've found Airship to be a winner in terms of affordability, great beans, and sufficiently caffeinating me. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Onyx is "all style no substance"--maybe I am just ordering the wrong drinks, and I should try some more standard coffees. But, for the person who has graduated from Starbucks but likes a froofy, dessert-y coffee drink, Onyx is definitely for you. read more

I was a barista for almost 10 years and have tried hundreds of coffee shops between SF Bay Area, southern CA, HI, AZ, NM, CO, TX, OK, and so far a handful in NWA. Onyx is easily the best coffee shop I have been to, next to a local one in Walnut Creek, CA. I've tried several seasonal drinks, pour overs, and teas. Every drink is delicious, along with the food. Whenever I get a chance to come here without the kids its a great place to sit and have coffee. I now buy the Monarch ground for espresso for my machine at home, and every americano I make tastes amazing. The only downside is that Onyx has made my expectations much higher for better quality coffee, and am much more selective about where I go to try new coffee. read more

It took about 30 minutes to get my food. I watched the staff make it and set it on the counter near the pick up window. After about ten minutes of it sitting in the pickup area without my buzzer going off, I walked up and saw that the ticket next to the roll had my name on it. I asked the staff member if I could have the roll. She appeared annoyed and replied, "we usually call up all the orders at the same time," while directing my attention to the multiple drink items stacked near the pickup window. There were a lot of options on the menu that I was really drawn to, and in the end I opted to get the Hail Fellow Well Met, because it had browned butter as an ingredient and I had never seen that in a latte before. It ended up being one of the best lattes I've ever had, with such a unique flavor. Their seasonal flavors sounded inventive and delicious as well. I wish I had Onyx Coffee Lab back home, because the Hail Fellow was that good. There's enough seating here that even with the large crowd, we found a place to sit pretty easily.
