I could not bear to study here - or read, or write, or whatever - unless it was absolutely necessary. There are always tons of people here doing whatever it is people do (here, it almost always contains Thomas Aquinas or some such, even when completely unnecessary), and between the talking and the music I just can't concentrate. The space is comfy enough, but I feel like I'm in the middle of a Bolshevik revolution meeting, and not just from the conversations going on around me. The place is industrial and very unclean. I didn't really notice the flies that much. The structure looking like a broken-down Ugandan hospital, that I see. This is not like your average coffee shop where you have few chairs and nice sofas with pandora/spotify/local radio playing in the background. The decor will surely surprise you. On looking closely, I realized that the chairs/tables/sofas are all scavenged stuff. They have remodeled a park bench. Some of the sofas are for the daring ones. I didn't take a chance on those. For music, they had indian sitar and tabla(percussion instrument) jugalbandi playing in the background. They had some good pastries which we didn't have the appetite for. The staff were very kind and patient in explaining the different kind of teas they have and tried their best in describing their flavors. I like my cappuccino. What surprised me was that. This is one of the only places I can think of that I simply can't stand. The interior is disorganized and filthy, with old saggy couches and dirty floors. You can never find a place to sit because it almost always seems to be packed (not that I'd want to sit in there anyway). The coffee is fine but very expensive for the size, not to mention the sizes are inconsistent. If three people order a latte, they're all likely getting vastly different sizes, resulting in someone paying $6 for a soup bowl sized drink, and the person behind them paying the same for a macchiato sized one. The food is also pricey and tastes stale every time. The service is really what kills it though, and I'm certainly not the first person to mention it. I've yet to encounter a barista there who didn't ignore me, scoff at me once he or she got around to taking my order, take 20 minutes to make said order, and wasn't just an overall miserable human being. read more

Pros: The prices are low compared to other cafes in the area. The staff is very friendly and never stop what they're doing to talk to each other. The bathrooms are always clean, as well as the tables. It's kid-friendly and seems to be a very nice social spot for teens. Pro/con: Most of their pastries are good while some are just not edible (it isn't on them, it's on the people they buy it from). Their coffee is nice but sometimes tastes a little off. Their tea is super super bitter but still enjoyable. Cons: The place is always packed and the limited seating can be stressful for people that go there to do work, not talk to their friends. Some of the chairs get uncomfortable if you're sitting in it longer than an hour. The closeness of the seating can make it difficult to maneuver around everything, especially when the college kids have 10 foot long cords or their chairs pushed back enough to obnoxiously be in the way. In all, this cafe is cute and a good place to head to if you want to relax. The hallway may be the best area for studying (or the study room) as teens are likely to head to the left area. There's outlets everywhere so it's not hard to find somewhere to charge your devices. The staff is super friendly and are always doing their best. I am so confused as to why this place has 3 stars!? I am a big coffee nut and my family owns a coffee/ sweets shop in Florida. I was part of finding the coffee they use and know a ton about quality coffee. Open has some of the best cold brew around. Most cold brew is too acidic, which means it sat too long or not long enough. It's bold, but doesn't "burn" if you know what I mean. It's some of the only mocha I like in town everywhere else barely puts any chocolate and sometimes begs the question if there was chocolate in them at all. Open eye is second the none in chapel hill for the study ambiance. if you're someone who likes to go to a coffee shop and be surrounded by other people working (this always give me energy somehow), then this is definitely the place. there is tons of seating available (comfy chairs, desks, bar stools and larger tables which makes it a good spot for people working on their own or in groups. there isn't really anything available in the way of food, but there are a few beer and wine selections as well as a full coffee menu--kinda nice to end a study session with a glass of wine. there is free wifi and it's never too noisy. plus, when you get tea you get an entire french press worth of tea, definitely worth. read more

Ok, there are quite a few flies at Open Eye but it's because of the constant stream of people coming in! It's a totally Carrboro place, students, bicyclists and young couples with small children gather for a quick coffee, latte and snack. There's always somebody interesting or odd looking (plenty of tattoos and piercings) in the place but that's why I like it! If you want your coffee in a cookie-cutter generic environment, there's a Starbucks on every corner to keep you busy. You probably won't be happy with Open Eye if you like your coffeehouses really clean. The pictures are not entirely accurate from what I've seen and experienced at Open Eye! Besides the good coffee, you've got Guglhupf pastries and if you want to get a really early start on the evening, wine by the glass or bottle. There's one main room with two smaller side rooms and free wifi. The tables, chairs and couches look like leftovers from Goodwill, everything's well-worn and unmatched. And after I'm done, I typically bus my cup and plate over to the side of the counter to save the staff some time. Yep, Open Eye Cafe is definitely not for everyone, just for those who want to relax with a good cup of coffee in an eclectic, interesting spot. read more

Went here recently and had a fairly unpleasant experience. They forgot about my order (just a cup of tea) and 15+ minutes later when I asked them about it they made it for me and just said "here". Just all around pretty unfriendly. I went to join my friends in uncomfortable chairs and enjoy my tea. I would have loved to have a snack with it, but they only had a small selection and none of it was vegan. Carrboro is great, but I will stick to Weaver Street Market or Bean Traders. read more

The coffee here is quite good, and I did have a really great apple tart here once that I still think about fondly. Beyond that, though the appeal of the Open Eye kind of ends for me. Lots of memory at this cafe. Beside the amazing Chai, and drip coffee they have, I also love the atmosphere most of the time. Personal favorite is to get there early, get a pot of tea, a fresh slice of pastry (or fruit tart), find a nice place to sit and stay there for hours. The service is kind of hit and miss from time to time, where you could have the warmest person or the most aloof person, but I am not really there for the service anyway. This is - or at least was - my go-to coffee shop for studying. Always plenty of seating, reliable wifi, nearby parking, and generally not too noisy (depending on where you are seated relative to the speakers). I will say that compared to my undergraduate years (when dinosaurs roamed), this place definitely got pretty popular with students and therefore you may not get ideal seating at every visit. Sure, the espresso drinks are overpriced (basic lattes start at $4), but that doesn't really affect me since I usually go with friends and split a large tea for $5. The baristas are always sweet and happy to refill with hot water for when it's one of those nights! I agree with other yelp reviewers that the outlets are not always reliable (especially with holding onto my macbook charger prongs), but all in all this place still holds up as a solid place to hang out or get work done. I recently moved to Carrboro and was looking for a good coffee shop to work from in the mornings and Open Eye was the closest commute. Looking at the reviews it seemed like people either overwhelmingly love the place or think it's on part with NYC snobbery. Here is my take.... The barrista's are all good at what they do. Some are cheerful and helpful while a few are somewhat indifferent in their attitude. I've not once had a negative experience with one after frequenting the place for 3 weeks. The seating is pretty great. From the outside it looks like a smaller shop but inside it stretches out like the tardis. There are plenty of plugs but there are so plenty of people to take them so be prepared! I can't speak to the coffee but the espresso is quite good. It's smooth and a slight bit chocolaty and no real signs of over roasting. I keep coming back to the americano. Pastries are also really good but the selection varies day to day so if you find a mainstay you may have to veer from it about a third of the time. Overall it's a great shop with great drinks and tasty baked goods. Don't be offended if you are not always welcomed with a smile but you'll get smiles on some days. read more

I am a lover of coffee shops to work and hang out in! My go to is Bean Traders in Durham (see my 5 star review). Today, I wandered into Open Eye Café in Carborro to do some work. I ordered a dirty chai latte and it was bitter and vaguely distant of "chai". Bean Traders actually seeps a chai tea bag in your latte. The music is excessively loud. Their music played OVER my beats. It's impossible to think or talk. I asked the gentleman if it would be possible to turn the music down and he gave me a curt "no". No apologies. No explanation. It is a notch off of the best roasted coffee in the country (Intelligentsia, Counter Culture, etc.) but it is still very good and baristas (baristi?) work magic with it. I was a regular Open Eye customer until last week. I ordered a mocha extra hot, for one specific reason, which was that I was taking it home to my wife (we live about three miles away) and I wanted it to still be hot when I got home. She was home with one our kids, who was sick, and I thought she would like it. So I just wanted a mocha, extra hot, which I have gotten at Open Eye and many other coffee joints before. On this occasion, the mocha I ordered was not only not extra hot, but it was barely even hot at all. I paid $4.75 for this drink so I kind of wanted it the way I ordered it, so I went to the barista and asked her if she could make it a little bit hotter. Her response, and this is a quote, was "Oh my God, I burned my hand on that! You want it hotter? Give it to me." I was amazed at how rude this woman was and showed her how "not hot" it was by holding it up in my bare hand with no sleeve. No burning sensation at all and I my sense of touch is in full capacity. Even as I showed her how ridiculous her saying was that it "burned her hand" was, she demanded again, "Give it to me!" She then steamed it up with some foam and handed it back to me in about 5 seconds. During the course of this there was an exchange of not-so-niceties, but as my kids like to say, "She started it." I have NEVER come upon a barista this rude at any coffee house of any kind and continue to be amazed at how rude this loathsome, bitter woman was. Open Eye, I'm sure you don't care because your establishment is packed nearly every time I go in there (though I hope the majority of people in there are students taking up tables for hours and paying your 3 bucks each for a cup of a coffee), but I will NEVER enter your establishment again. When it comes down to it, life is too short to deal with rude people, and there are several other coffee establishments in Carrboro and Chapel Hill that are as good if not better. Adios, Open Eye. I agree with reviews that it's kind of a cool, hip place, and the coffee was good. I'm giving this the worst rating possible because of the staff's behavior at closing time. Starting at about 10.45, they purposely put on acid rock and hard core rap (neither of which I have a problem with), but then jacked the volume up to ear splitting levels, specifically to drive patrons to leave. As I tried to finish my conversation with my friend, we hit the 11pm mark, and the volume literally went to the level that one could not communicate without shouting above the music. And the staff clearly reveled in their rudeness, laughing as disgruntled patrons left the cafe. Come on, guys. A simple and kind "we're closing in 15 minutes" would have been respected. I would have packed up and left, and further would have easily become a repeat customer. But I won't be coming back, and it is my hope that your rude behavior catches up with you. I'll certainly do my part to let the community know what kind of service to expect at Open Eye Cafe, and I hope the volume of my dissatisfaction is loud enough to hear above the death metal that has to still be ringing in all of our ears 12 hours later. read more

I want to like Open Eye. I really do. It's got nearly everything you'd want from a locally owned coffee shop: great coffee, live music, cool atmosphere, etc. But, such attributes hardly make up for one major flaw: the customer service. I know this has been mentioned before, so I'm hardly providing any new information, but the service here is just terrible. It seems like customers are made to feel like incidentals...like we're just an annoyance to the baristas who act like they have better things to do than serve the very people whose patronage keeps them employed. Look, I don't expect much. A simple smile, accompanied by a "Hi, how are you?" or some other kind salutation would suffice. But seriously, some of these folks act like they have a huge chip on their shoulder. I offered a baby carrot to a very angular employee as he wiped the tables around me. My friend politely asked if the volume of Nick Drake could possibly be turned down before we become mortally depressed and he said he was new here but would ask. Then looked at me intensely and said he might take me up on my carrot offer later. Another really lovely employee came to talk about the music with us and then said that the guy who spoke with us earlier is not actually employed at Open Eye. Now the unemployee has swept 5 very slow circles around me with a broom I believe he brought in himself and is off in a corner staring magick into my face as the sound of a pan flute floats over our heads. Just when I thought I was hip, I came in here and saw the sea of eclectic individuals, their macbook pros and was sadly mistaken. I was introduced to this place by the lovely Ms. Christina G. and boy was she right about their delicious coffee. Before coming here, I was a total purist and only went to Bean Traders and Starbucks (only if I wasn't able to go to Bean Traders). If I'm ever in the CH/Carrboro area again, I'm definitely coming back here. I also bought quite a few desserts while I was there. Don't worry, they weren't all for me. I tried their chocolate croissant, giant strawberry/blueberry tart and cheese danish. ALL mouth wateringly good. It's a pretty busy place, but they manage to get the drinks out at a decent time, but be prepared to wait in line on weekends. This place is definitely a prime study spot with many large tables, chairs and couches. Another great thing to know about this place is that they also serve wine, so there's something for everybody :) read more

This was the first local cafe I was introduced to when I moved back to NC a couple of years ago. At first, it seemed terrific, but my impression quickly went downhill. Update: I've been giving this place another chance recently because a friend goes a lot, and I've had a good time the last few times. People seem nicer. Not sure if the grumpy ones left, or if I've just had good luck lately, but I'm upping to 3 stars. I haven't tried ordering a prepared drink again yet, so I can't say if service has sped up or not. CONS: music is often bad and loud, and service has been pretty questionable, ranging from aloof to grumpy. Sometimes I feel like I'm annoying them by placing an order. PRO: large space and good bathrooms: They do have nice bathrooms, and so far they've been clean and well-stocked every single time I've been in. The doors lock right and the toilets flush properly. If you have lived in Park Slope, Silverlake, the Fillmore or the Pike/Pine corridor, then you will find Open Eye to be the best coffeeshop in the triangle. Actually, you might find it to be the only coffeeshop in the triangle. Barristas could double as roadies for the Black Crows. The place cultivates its unpretentiousness, from unpolished concrete floors to ratty yet comfy couches to old-school one-piece chair/desks and mismatched tables. No, you can't have exactly what you want. There is no Grande Fratelloccino here. But there is great coffee and espresso, local art on bare brick walls, exposed ductwork and natural light, speakers spilling ballads, and a crowd of smart, rumpled people firing synapses over free reliable fast wi-fi, all working together to lead you gently and inevitably into flow state. I'm going to marry this place, but I'm willing to share her with you. UPDATE AUGUST 2012: Since our march nuptials, I've spent more sundays with Open Eye than not. I'll admit to dallying with other coffeeshops but only to remind myself how lucky I am to have Open Eye. She does two things they do better than anyone else. These took me some time to fully appreciate. First, when your order is ready, Open Eye lets you find it youself at the copper coffee bar. Her barristas do not announce its arrival to the entire restaurant. And that means that they don't break the flow of everyone working in the place. By contrast, Starbucks employees YELL a first name with a drink order every time they pour a cup of coffee, like a five-year-old seeking validation from her mother. And if you aren't hovering to pick it up immediately, they might keep repeatedly yelling your name until you come and get it. Not the optimal environment to get work done. Second, Open Eye's wireless internet has always been fast and reliable. I've even streamed high-quality online video without any trouble. This stands in stark contrast to Cafe Helios, my second in-town choice of office-away-from-office. Helios' wifi connection regularly slows to a crawl and mysteriously shuts off from time to time when the restaurant fills up. There you have it. Open Eye not only captivates you at first glance, she offers substance beneath the style. That's a basis for a long-term relationship. Now, if only she would open a Durham location... read more

I walked into Open Eye not sure what to expect. I'm a native of Chapel Hill, but I've been living in New Orleans for the past 8 years. When I moved away, Open Eye was next door to its current location and about 1/3 the size it is now. The new location is a big improvement. Open Eye definitely has a hipster vibe, which is why I was wary of it. The barista who took my order pretty much epitomized a Carrboro hipster too, which reinforced my idea that this was going to be an unpleasant place to do some work on my laptop. But everything turned out great! The barista was really nice and friendly, and even gave me a free croissant (he forgot to charge me for it so he just gave it to me "on the house.") The coffee was reasonably priced and tasted good, but man, that croissant was incredible. I'm not sure if it tasted better because it was free, but that croissant was like Socrates' Ideal Croissant: flaky and buttery and moist. The cafe is usually crowded but there is adequate seating. Not all of it is near an outlet so that could prove to be a problem for some. They also have outdoor seating for the smokers (and for non-smokers too I suppose.) I'm surprised they even allow smoking outside the cafe because smoking in Carrboro is practically illegal. They also have wifi, which I think would be weird if they didn't, don't you? I mean, what kind of cafe doesn't have wifi?? My one complaint is that the music they played was too loud, and some of it was very discordant. I found it hard to concentrate on my work, and even when I plugged in my earphones to my computer to listen to something more soothing, I could still hear the cafe's music. In the five years since I first reviewed Open Eye, I've become increasingly disillusioned with it. The staff gets crankier and more rude (there are a couple of notable exceptions), the furniture gets dirtier and less comfortable, and they haven't addressed the problem of direct sunlight pouring in a certain times of day. (Open Eye folks-check out the great shades Jessee's, your competitor, has.) I'm in my mid-thirties now--dirty chic no longer works. I want clean, comfortable, with exceptional service for my hard-earned dollars. The espresso is still delicious (that earned you all three of your stars), but I can also get delicious espresso at Jessee's and a number of other places. Your drip coffee is fine, but I can get a fantastic pour over at Vinyl Perk for the same price. Shape up, Open Eye. It's not 2003 any longer. read more

My wife and I went to Open Eye Sunday morning, Jan 25th. It was cold outside and we looking forward to a great espresso. We walked a few blocks from our hotel and arrived at 7:55, to see the sign say open at 8:00 on Sunday. The female barista inside looked up and ignored us, making us stand in the cold for 5 minutes. When the magic 8:00 hour rang, she slugged over to the door and abruptly just unlatched the dead bolt. She didn't bother to open the door, or bid us a good morning, or even speak. Whatever, I thought. Everyone can have a bad morning when they have to work on Sunday. But the dour mood continued. Snarky one word answers to questions, and impatient glares. We were the only ones in the place, yet she kept the obnoxious music on at an annoying loud setting. Then the next customer who arrived left his change as a tip, and she rolled her eyes and tossed the meager change into the jar as if offended. The worst service I've ever had in a coffee shop. And I'm 52 and have been to dozens. If I was the owner I would find someone grateful to have the job.
