Kanika Design - Los Altos hill home remodel and kitchen remodel

    Kanika Design

I'll be honest-we were pretty overwhelmed at the thought of doing a full makeover for our home. We…read moreknew we wanted a total makeover for our place, but trying to find a team that actually handles the 'boots on the ground' construction side and the high-end design is way harder than it looks. After talking to a few different firms, Kanika Design just felt like the right fit. Kanika really listened to what we wanted. I've always been a bit nervous about using bold colors, but she pushed us (in a good way!) for a deeper color palette in the main living areas. It looks incredible. Kanika found us so many unique, high-quality furniture pieces that you just won't find at a big-box store. The biggest thing for us was logistics. Once the design process completed, their team handled everything - architectural, permit headache, and construction. Anyone who has done a remodel knows things never go 100% perfectly, but whenever an issue popped up, they were on top of it immediately. They kept the contractors moving and kept us updated on the budget and what was happening next. It's a relief to finally be done after 2 years and have a home that feels like us but way better. I can't recommend Kanika and her team enough. We're still obsessed with how everything turned out.

I…read morewanted to update my kitchen to make it brighter and fit in with the style of the rest of the house but needed help with what to do. Shawn took a look around, listened to what I had in mind, and thankfully told me what would or wouldn't work. He picked a beautiful quartz counter top, gave me options to choose from for the paint, faucet and hardware. He has a great team working for him. They were respectful and trustworthy. The refinished cabinets look like new. They do high quality work. He made his best effort to get things done within the time frame discussed but, as with any renovation, there were some unexpected issues that led to minor delays and affected cost. I really appreciated how his main concern was that I was happy with the end result. Before and in process photos attached (forgot to take a picture of the final product and don't want to clean the kitchen right now).

4.5 stars We did a…read morefull kitchen remodel soon after moving into our new home (before we got too settled). Due to unusual circumstances, we had a very tight timeline (see below for more details) so they were able to finish in 2 1/2 months. Overall, we are very happy with the end result and love our new, open layout! TL:DR version: - GREAT construction team/vendors and Fadil is the BEST project manager. Also the flooring contractor, Izec, is amazing. - Loved the design recommendations made by Shawn, like the floating shelves and bench by the window. - Pricing is competitive. Quality of work is fantastic. Designs are beautiful. - Area of improvement: better communication throughout the project. I had to be proactive and ask a lot of questions and follow up often. They offer both design and construction services, all under the same owner. This was convenient in that I only had to deal with one company and they took care of everything. Our project was unusual in that I was 6 months pregnant when we started the project. Typically, they don't start on construction until all materials are in stock but we needed to get things moving and completed quickly, so we ordered mostly standard sized and in-stock materials. The owner, Shawn, kept his promise on adhering to our timeline to the best of his ability, even as we ran into challenges with plumbing, structural, and electrical. His team worked tirelessly--even on weekends--to meet our deadline, without sacrificing quality or details. With any major construction, nothing is flawless. The one challenge I had, which may be unique to my circumstance, was getting proactive updates and just overall communication. At times, the construction team didn't even know what they were working on. Some of the designs didn't match the materials ordered. There was some miscommunication on which materials we were responsible for vs. what they would get for us. These were minor issues that eventually got resolved but it did cause me some stress and unrest. Highly recommend being proactive, with any big construction project, and staying close to the details... At the end of the day, despite some bumps, we now have our dream kitchen! And it was completed in record time! Last but not least, if you're told that any materials are "stuck" at the Oakland port, GET SOMETHING ELSE that's in stock. There is no ETA on when things will get unloaded at the dock...could be weeks or even months.

Archana is with you throughout the entire process, beginning to the very end, transitioning your house to the most comforting home. If you are on the fence, DO IT. She will work with you, and it will work out, and you will be so, so happy. Let's get into the nitty gritty (bear with me, it's a long one) - Archana is everything you could wish for in a designer, supporting your every need, every step of the way. She is creative, patient, understanding, communicative, authentically kind, and most importantly - she loves what she does. For my project, I needed some serious help with my dining room. I was at my wit's end. As you can tell in my before photos, this was a hopeless home project for me. I painted it an awful blue thinking I could do something fun with that and a hodge-podge of very random pieces scattered around thinking that would tie it together lol. What I wanted: A room for gathering with friends/family and a room I could casually lounge - with comforting, warm, inviting vibes. To start, Archana came over and spent about an hour with me - taking measurements, photos, asking questions, understanding my needs. Transparently, I didn't make this easy and came to Archana with a difficult task - after a very unfortunate surprise renovation, I had a lower budget to work with. And to make matters even more challenging I owned random mismatched furniture I didn't want to get rid of because it was either functional or important inherited pieces (dining table/benches/etc.). The cherry on top? A home built in 1906 - well over 100 years old, so a lot of aged nuances to the house with textures and wainscoting. A few challenges to say the least. Outside of my restrictive budget, I tried to give her the space she needed to work her magic. Now, gathering the furniture and decor. One thing I really appreciated about Archana is how communicative she is. She'll work with you on your preferred method - I personally preferred text. She is constantly asking me questions and sending me pieces to look at and for feedback. No pressure on responses and I reply when I have the chance to. I am frustratingly indecisive and always sharing new ideas, pivoting from a direction we thought we were going to a completely different one. She welcomed all new ideas, while still considering the big picture and staying focused. She will also ask for your preferred purchasing method. I preferred ordering the main, big pieces in case there were any issues I wanted to be the one that had my name on the order. Everything shipped to my house. Because of my low budget - she found great, affordable pieces at Homegoods, Marshall's and Ikea and sent me receipts with all her purchases for reimbursement. Those came with her on set-up day. Everything was organized and there were no surprises. I think I was pretty quick in decision making and we weren't making any structural changes. I told her my timeline isn't rushed, maybe a month. But... in TWO WEEKS we had everything we needed to complete the project!!! She said I had a pretty easy project. But still, TWO. WEEKS. Insane. She came over with her partner and spent a full Saturday/Sunday to assemble, set up, and ultimately - reveal. The biggest task was the wallpaper. Extra (extreme) labor was involved with cutting, fitting, and adhering - this was quite the significant task and major, major kudos to the power duo for installing this and how freaking amazing it turned out!!! Finally, the reveal - and love that she offers this!! I had a friend hangout at the house while I was out doing some family things. Then I came back and it was time for the reveal.... ... Speechless, in love and awe of the dining room that was and now is. Everything was of course what I expected, but it all came together beautifully. Her finishing touches were absolute perfection. The wallpaper, the decor, the reading nook - I mean are you kidding me?! To see the vision come to life - the care, the love that she puts into her work. I am so incredibly grateful for her and am so happy that I worked with this team. From her kind personality, her style, her patience, her vision - absolutely zero regrets. It's only been a couple days, but now every time I enter this room - I feel a sense of comfort and happiness. FINALLY. Thank you again Marble Home Renovations for everything you are and everything you do.

However, as we got deeper into the process, we quickly realized how overwhelming it was without a designer. What started as a kitchen renovation soon expanded into a full home transformation--kitchen, bathrooms, family, living, and dining rooms--all of which desperately needed an update from their original 1992 construction. After months of searching and interviewing designers, we found Alina Druga Interiors. My wife was especially drawn to her award-winning designs, and after glowing reference checks, we confidently hired her for both the design and project management phases. From the very beginning, Alina brought a sense of clarity and structure to what had been a chaotic and overwhelming process. One of Alina's greatest strengths is her ability to ask the right questions to truly understand her clients' style and needs. She introduced us to ideas we would never have considered, while also being straightforward and honest about what would or wouldn't work--and, more importantly, why. She has a gift for refining ideas into something cohesive, tasteful, and elegant. Beyond her impeccable design skills, Alina is extremely detail-oriented and proactive. She spotted potential construction issues early on, saving us from costly mistakes. Her detailed CAD drawings were invaluable in helping us visualize the design and made things significantly smoother for our contractor. Thanks to her meticulous planning and years of experience, the entire process was well-organized--so by the time construction began, every material, appliance, and detail was already accounted for. While the preparation process took about a year, the actual construction went remarkably smoothly and was completed in just four months. Now, every time we walk through the door, we feel happy and relaxed in our beautifully designed home. It truly feels like the house we've wanted for years--our happy place! Alina's expertise, organization, and eye for design transformed our home into something modern, inviting, and perfectly suited to our lifestyle. If you are looking for a designer who is not only talented but also an exceptional project manager, we highly recommend Alina Druga Interiors!

We haven't done the actual construction yet because of some personal scheduling conflicts, but I have no doubt that Larry and his team would be just as detailed and thorough in that endeavor as they were with the planning.
