NOTE: My review profile shows we are in California-We are Not. We are in Michigan-…read moreMy spouse was transferred to Borgess (Beacon Health Kalamazoo), following stabilization for cardiac and respiratory complications. He arrived onto the ICU step-down unit shortly after 7p, for continued cardiac and respiratory monitoring. At 4:30 am, 9 hours after his admission requiring a step-down ICU setting, he was transferred to a med/surg/GERIATRIC unit. I emphasized 'geriatric' as that was the true nature of this floor, and unfortunately, the quality of care he received. He was left for HOURS unattended and not checked on. The nursing staff caring for him was NOT acceptable. The ordered oxygen via nasal canal was not provided through the night on 10/13/25, with his indication NOBODY had checked on him the entire night? I will mention Julie (Julia) in particular. On her watch, he was sent for a cardiac stress test in the morning-he had not met her prior to his leaving the floor (10/14/25). I received a call from him at approximately 10:40am, following his testing he indicated he was having complications breathing, and his heart was racing, and he was on room air-still no nurse was seen upon his return to the floor. I told him to put on his call light and try to relax. I immediately called "Julie/Julia" to notify her of his current situation as reported to me via phone (1 hour away). She would not discuss him with me, as I did not know his PIN ( I gave his full name, date of birth, admission date/time, and transferring facility name)- I had called EVERY day/night since his admission on 10/12/25, receiving updates without asking for a PIN, which I was NEVER provided with. I asked Julie/Julia to immediately go to his room and have him call me on his speaker phone (10:50am?). I arrived on the Borgess GERIATRIC unit approximately at 1:05 pm-still no direct communication with Julie/Julia. Upon my arrival, Julie/Julia was in the room, and my spouse's vitals were being assessed. They had provided him with a medication (???? what was the medication!). There was an initiation of confrontation between myself and the nurse as related to poor communication and disregarding my request for a return call, so much that we NEVER saw her in his room for the remainder of the day. I spoke with the Nurse's supervisor, voicing my concerns about the POOR care my husband was receiving. My persistent question throughout his stay-"WHY is he on this floor? He was transferred for ICU-step down care, he could have stayed at our local facility and been provided with the same, if not better care. During his stay, he was NOT allowed up to the bathroom or ambulatory in any fashion without assistance. The staff DID NOT assist him, I did. The staff never even changed his bed linens when I did have him up walking, until I stripped his filthy bed and asked the PCA to change the linens. During our walk in the hall, we witnessed patients crying/yelling for help, lying in bed, hanging off the bed, partially dressed, and even completely naked, exposed to ANYONE who would pass their rooms. This, at the VERY minimum, is ABUSE/NEGLECT and disrespectful to the admitted patients requiring care. The Kicker....the absolute irony....he was discharged to go home at/around 11 am (10/15/25) and was told he could independently ambulate to the lobby and wait for my arrival. I am an HOUR away! HE WAS ADMITTED FOR CARDIAC/PULMONARY EDEMA and subsequent complications! What has our health care come to? Do patients NOT come first any longer? What we experienced was disgraceful, "Dirty White Shoe Nursing", as we would refer to it back in the day, when myself and the other compassionate nurses' were pounding the pavement for our 12-hour shifts, ensuring proper care and compassion to our patients. I think there are two issues here: 1) Union nurses is contradictory to fantastic service and 2) patients to nurse ratio. The call light blinks for 45 minutes to get someone in the room to use the bathroom....the dinner trays sit for an hour and a half. The physician was fantastic but the rest is not a great story from my personal experience yesterday and last night. When people are in the hospital, they are in fact needy and should not have to wait for service that comes at such a high cost, both financially and physically.

That is what I will be talking about here. First: PARKING. THANK YOU, Bronson, for having enough handicap spots when I went. They are all right in front, with flat areas and no curbs. I appreciate this. Second: check-in. The staff member was friendly, polite, and quite helpful. She made sure that everyone was completely masked (not an easy task nowadays, although one would hope easier in a hospital). Third: genetic counseling. I hadn't known what to expect, but was a bit worried because of family cancer history. What I got was a complete science lesson, and SO Much compassion and empathy from my genetic counselor, Cynthia Murray. She spent over 90 minutes with me, going through each section we needed to cover, and, with kindness and grace, answered all of my questions. I came in worried and a bit stressed, and left calm and feeling like I could do this. Isn't that what we want, from a medical appointment? She made it perfect (thank you!).

She is kind, compassionate and she listens! She remembers details of my personal life and always shows an interest in my family and what we have been up to. She is people oriented, while at the same time she navigates my cancer treatment and makes difficult decisions about my treatment. She has gone above and beyond in caring for me, even seeing me for a concern I had after a treatment when I didn't even have an appointment! My husband and I just love her and we couldn't be happier to have been placed in her care.
