Zac has a rare combination of weightlifting and physiology knowledge. I came looking for corrections to my squat form, and he gave me that. But Zac also walked me through why my form was wrong to start with - he identified a few tight muscle groups and gave me stretches to make keeping proper form easier, and accessory exercises I could work into my existing routine. He seems more like a coach than a trainer: he's not just running me through a routine, he's teaching it to me. I also appreciate how easy he is to work with - I've been burned by bad personal trainers before, so I had some pretty stringent requirements up front. Zach Burris is an EXCELLENT personal trainer. I started working with him in May. It's now August. I bought 18 sessions from him. I have lost a few pounds, it would have been nice if I had lost 10 (as that was my goal) however, given that I work full-time and attend graduate school full-time it was hard for me to attend the gym 7x a week as I used to before I went back to school. I will be weighed in and re-measured sometime next week. I am excited to see the results. I have definitely lost inches and increased muscle. Zach even noticed that. Zach always did a great job of being encouraging. I saw him 2-3x a week, and worked out on my own twice a week. He had me do something called "burners" in the morning which I found were very effective. In addition to personal training, I drank lots of water and ate well (no sugary stuff, minimally processed foods, more vegetables and fruit, & protein) 80% of the time. I highly recommend Zach. So I think this review requires a little background about me. I had just started working out in 2015 using the StrongLifts 5x5 program, but after a few months, I really felt like I was plateauing and I wasn't lifting any heavier. And with only 5 different exercises in the 5x5 program, I was looking for a wider variety of things to do at the gym since if the gym is really busy and the squat rack or power cage were taken up, I was at a loss of things to do. So Yelp led me to Zac at Optimum Fitness. I've been working out with him for the past four months, and I've definitely seen a difference so far. I've been able to lift much heavier than I was before through Zac's workout plan and motivation. He was able to give me assistive exercises to help get my other body parts stronger to help with the compound lifts I was looking to increase. What else is great is that Zac trains out of a private gym. I see other trainers at 24 Hour, and I always thought it'd be weird to have a ton of people surrounding you. At the gym Zac built, it feels much more personal and the equipment is really new. You also don't have to worry about anybody getting in your way since there's usually only a couple other clients there at the same time. My other reasons to see a trainer were accountability and pace. You're going to workout for sure if you have a training session schedule, and Zac is going to push you much harder than you can yourself. What I like about Zac is that he knows what goals I have in mind and is able to customize things in that direction. He's knowledgeable and is with you every step of the way. I was also very inexperienced when navigating the gym, as I constantly stuck to the cardio and neglected the other machines because I was too embarrassed. I have been training with Zac for a couple of years. A while a ago, I used to have lower back pain, tried chiropractors to elevate the pain, did not work. I had a great experience working with Zac! I bought the 4-session Groupon deal, but it would definitely be worth full price to train with him. I really appreciated Zac's positive energy. He was encouraging throughout each session while pushing me to work hard and make progress. When I first showed up at the gym, I was a bit intimidated because I hardly ever go to the gym, and I was greeted by a cardboard cut out of The Rock and I saw some really buff dudes when I glanced in. However, Buff Dude seemed really nice, and there were other non-buff people training there too. Zac himself was very friendly and professional! I felt like he genuinely cared about my well-being and wanted to help me live a healthy life (so I don't turn into a dumpling when I grow old or have pains related to sitting at a desk all day). I appreciated how Zac explained the purpose of the exercises and stretches he gave me, and what muscles to focus on. He demonstrated how to stretch/exercise/use equipment with proper form, and he gave me cues to help me learn how to do them correctly myself. He provided take-home work out plans, and helped me increase the intensity of my workouts each week. Zac is terrific. I've been training with him for almost a year now. I had never had a personal trainer before Zac, and I wasn't sure what to expect. On the first day, within the first 15 minutes, he asked me to do some exercises, and I was amazed at how quickly he was able to spot all my weaknesses - which muscles were weaker, what I needed to do to adjust my balance, etc. It was eye opening for me. Since then, he's been really methodical in focusing step by step and improving my overall conditioning a lot - from core, to lower body, to upper body and full body workouts.
