My home was directly impacted by an explosion of mosquitoes by the wetlands in Huntington Beach. Over one weekend, I had 20+ bites. With the recent cases of West Nile in OC, I freaked out and contacted OCMVCD via their website. Within a few days, a team showed up in my neighborhood and sprayed the crap out of everything. A technician, Cesar Sanchez, was dispatched to my home. Cesar was extremely professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He gave me a few pointers on how to prevent those suckers from showing up. The worst people. Malathion can cause many serious health problems, including death. People can chant the mantra "spray more." Its insane. I'm sure if the health effects were better known such as how "dangerous" COVID was, no one would want this sprayed on their lawn. You want the mosquitoes to stop? Call your local streets and drainage and tell them to dig your ditches out properly so the water isn't sitting therefore mosquitoes breeding. The risk far outweigh the benefits with Malathion. Not to mention mosquito control spraying before quiet hours, while kids are still outside. Not turning the trucks off when vehicles are behind them or approaching. They don't follow the proper protocol. Nor do they seem to care that you choose to not have their poisoned sprayed on your street. Orange County Vector Control (OCVCD) is a special district of the County of Orange that provides mosquito, rat and red imported fire ants (RIFA) abatement programs. Their missions statement: To provide the citizens of Orange County with the highest level of protection from vectors and vector borne diseases. What is a vector you ask? A vector is any insect or arthropod, rodent or other animal of public health significance capable of causing human discomfort or injury. This special district is an amazing service for the amount we citizens pay. It's a little less than $6 a year and it comes out of your property tax. For that fee you can get unlimited service for any of the mentioned vectors above. Are you kidding?!? You can't say that about any other government run agency. The best service they provide is EDUCATION! OCVCD Technicians will educate you on how to eliminate the source of you're vectors. They will also provide bait stations for rats and mosquito fish for standing water in ornamental ponds or green swimming pools. All your standing water in gutters is taking care of by a "spray route crew". They provide neighborhood mosquito larvae treatments with either a biological chemical or an oil that suffocates the mosquito larva. Other mosquito control methods are checking and treating flood control channels throughout Orange County. 100's of miles of cement and natural flood channels are treated by two-man crews. 1000s of acres of coastal and inland marshes are inspected and treated daily by technicians. Other technicians assist homeowners with rat problems. They will inspect, identify, and inform homeowners of prevention methods as well as placing a bait tube that contains a poison brick that kills the rat. They just recently changed to an even safer product to avoid secondary poisonings to domestic and wild animals. All of their technicians are certified and educated on the most up to date methods of vector control. They are held to a standard of professionalism you will not find at say your local police department or DMV. Had been getting mosquito bites nightly so I called Vector control to see if I could get an inspection. They sent someone over, he went around and sprayed my property and even asked the neighbors if they were having any problems then proceeded to treat their properties. Also asked about these 'toxic' pesticides they are using. It's called BVA and it's a 90% percent mineral oil solution, not even a pesticide but oil that suffocates instead of poisons the mosqiutos. All of these people who are against Vector control don't understand what is spewing from their holes apparently. I'm glad they are eliminating the rare chance of West Nile, and the annoyance of mosquitos. Most people of Orange County absolutely want their services. They are one of the best run services our county government makes available. read more

With the new invasive tiger mosquito appearing in our area, we called Vector to come out and inspect. Anthony was awesome, informative, and genuinely seems to care about the community and it's well being!! He gave us a few great tips to prevent mosquitoes that we hadn't thought of. I wish all of my neighbors would take a look at what vector has to offer in helps of controlling nasty invasive mosquitoes. To the idiot reviewers giving one star ratings because the read "mother earth" blogs complaining about spraying are morons and I hope you get eaten alive and contract Zika, west nile, or some other mosquito borne disease(s). If I could give 1/2 star or less I would!! I am outraged by your lack of communicating the fact that you are spraying thousands of people with out proper notification!! Do you know how many residence in Orange County have compromised immune systems widely due to chemicals?? Do you have any real data to support that it won't affect them? Malathion spraying of 89 made my son extremely ill and I find it hard to believe that these chemicals are the exception! I was amazed at how quickly and efficiently I was responded to when I sent them an email on mosquitoes. They called within hours, stopped by and set traps. The inspector also gave me a lot of good information on how best to cope with the situation. Before you call an exterminator, call these guys. Within 24 hours they got back to me to let me know the mosquitos they caught were disease free. I am definitely impressed. read more

I'm not ok with my house getting sprayed for Mosquitos and having no say. I don't agree with a company who thinks they can just dump chemicals on you without giving actual proper notification. Instead this company hides behind a 3 day weekend and behind the remembrance of 9/11. Absolutely disgusting. My kids will not be in school because of this and my dogs will not be outside. My neighbor has an abundance of rats, due to his unkept backyard. He has a old car parked in the backyard, and his household supplies and trash is everywhere. I have seen as many as 10 rats, at one time, come to my yard to feast on fruit tress. In the mornings, there are dozens of spoiled and half eaten fruit on my lawn. Everyone has referred to to Vector Control in Garden Grove...what a joke. Although they were polite, there is NOTHING that they can do to help me. WHAT??? Only the home owner can call for an educational meeting with them, to inform them what should be done. This is insane and I pray that no one in my family, does not get infected with their fleas. Good News! Vector Control stopped their unprecedented attempt to spray a toxic pesticide all over OC. We appreciate the service VC provides. Bad News. This episode illuminates a drastic need for change at Vector Control. ---We do NOT want more toxins. We want non-toxic solutions. ---We need a better public communications department. ---The definition of 'emergency' that allows one man the power to spray and large population must be reconsidered. Refuses to service for rats now. Dead rat found. Call to OC Vector Control of no help. Took over two weeks to respond to rat problem and then only advice. Agent tells me buy your own traps and poison. We no longer provide this. Thanks for nothing. What a joke that Vector control doesn't do rat traps anymore. Now all you get is a "Consultation". The next door neighbor has an unkept pond and yard which is where we think they are nesting. Rats bring their food into our yard to eat. Our tiny dogs have been coming across the rats and their uneaten foods. This is the second time I have called for fire ants. The last time was last year and they came out the next day and sprayed and even followed up with another visit. I used the Internet this time to ask for help, again last month for the same problem (fire ants), and again they responded within 3 days and came out within 2 days and sprayed and gave me a lot of information and the problem has been taken care of. I have always been impressed with Vector Control. Years ago I used them for Rat Control. When you have a very large property there is always something and Vector is there for me. read more
