The front office has no clue what they are doing. I was told on a call that they accepted my PPO insurance, after a visit, they didn't ask me for a co-pay, so i told her to look and make sure I do not owe a co-pay, she said, "oh yes, you owe $25". Two weeks later, I get a bill in the mail for $500! When I called in to ask about it they, would not provide me with details, i explained that i was informed over the phone and in person that my exam would be fully covered by my insurance with exception to my co-pay. This facility lacks integrity, honesty and professionalism. They also will create additional "check ups" for future visits that you don't even need just to bill you/your insurance company. read more

We have been waiting for two hours to be seen by the doctor and it looks like it will be another hour. They need to not schedule so many patients with only seeing one doctor in the office. We called the day before to be seen for an emergency of a possible retina tear and they couldn't see us bc their systems were down. That should have been our first sign to call a different office. Find another facility to go to. read more

This is a review of the office staff. I booked a return appointment some time ago, and when I arrived I was told my appointment needed to be rescheduled. The receptionist said she called me and left a voice mail message. I said it was impossible because I don't have voice mail set up. I was peeved but let it go and rebooked. Today I arrived as scheduled for my 1:00 appointment and was told Dr Kim no longer comes in on Wednesday. Again the receptionist claims she left a voice message. And again I told her I don't have voice mail set up so there is no way she left me a message. After clarifying that they had the correct number, she again claimed she left me a voice message, so I again, for the third time, said that's impossible, I don't have voice mail set up. She said she doesn't want to argue with me and wanted to reschedule. I said no thanks and slammed the door when I left. Thats the last time I will connect with them. I hate when people lie. They even have my email address, so why not send me an email? Gee, that would require working, being thorough and considerate. Dr. Kim, hire a new receptionist if you value your patients. read more

First: I understand the issues with waiting, but this has nothing to do with the life changing work they do. If you want your car painted in a day, go to Earl Sheib. If you want to see again after a complete retina detachment while other doctors tell you you'll never see again? Scheduled to see Dr. Rathod. Pull up a chair, sit down for perhaps 30 mins, get your eyes dilatated, go back and sit down, and get ready to have your vision restored. Then go home and read a book about what it's like to be grateful. I can see again after 100% blindness in my right eye. Only one person restored a persons eye sight quicker than 60 mins, and last I heard the waiting list is a lifetime. read more

Today 1/8/2024.. there are two receptionists... girl with glasses/messed up tattooed eyebrows??? Sitting on your right when you are checking in . Im standing there ready to check in.. she is looking down texting on her personal phone/doesn't look up to acknowledge anyone .. all she says is "name?"...how about you learn to say " hello, how are you today? May I get your name to check you in? " keep in mind never once looked up from her phone ... please hire someone more friendly and personable.. esp if they will be the first for your patients to see . . read more

SURPRISE BILL WITHOUT DISCLOSURE! BEWARE! Recently went to Dr. Rathod for Photodynamic Therapy on one of my eyes for a retina condition. It was only a 15 minute procedure at most. At the time of the procedure, they did not disclose the cost of the procedure which was $3800. This included a drug known as verteporfin that costs $2100. I did not find out about the cost until 3 months after my surgery. Had I known about these costs up front, I would have shopped around. It should also be noted that this therapy has done nothing to materially improve my eyesight. My insurance covered $1800 which still leaves me with a $2000 bill. I will reach out to my local state representative to push the California legislature to require these practices to disclose these costs in advance. In the meantime, please be sure to get any costs up front in writing. read more

There needs to be an option for zero stars. Waited for over an hour for the appointment. Which is not easy with a 4 month old. The doctor is very cold, not very thorough with explaining issues. The nurses are Not personable or people frIendly. The front desk staff is pleasant though. read more

Wow I'm shocked by the negative reviews. I went to see Dr You and had a great experience. I was going for a 2nd opinion so maybe if other reviewers have seen a sub par specialist it would be different. This office had way more staff and equipment than where I had gone and Dr You seemed a lot more knowledgeable. The waiting room was very busy but my appointment was at 8am so I think getting early appts are better. They told me to expect 2 hours total and I left at 10:15am. This review is for my experience with Dr. You at Orange County Retina's Newport Beach office on May 20, 2020. Wait time: My appointment time was 9:30 am. After reading so many reviews complaining about long wait times I was prepared to sit in the waiting room for a while. When I checked in at 9:25 there were 8 people waiting. Two got called back while I was checking in. Just a minute or two after sitting down I was called back. (Exactly at my 9:30 appointment time.) A nurse asked a few questions, put dilation drops in my eyes and asked me to go back to the waiting room (9:35). Just a few minutes later I was called back again and led to the reduced-light room (9:40). A few minutes later a PA came in to ask some questions, saying the Dr. would be in soon. Before she asked a question the Dr. came in (9:45). He asked some questions, examined my eyes and said he wanted to do a scan in the next room. The room was busy so I waited a few minutes and was called to the scanning room (10:00). A tech did the scan and the Dr. came in immediately after. He went over the results, explained my condition and said to make follow up appointment in two months (10:10). I made the appointment and walked out the door at 10:15. Only 45 minutes start to finish. Although everything moved along at a brisk pace I never felt rushed. Staff: The staff was friendly and efficient. They weren't chatty but they weren't cold or rude, just pleasant and knowledgeable and professional. Dr. You: I liked Dr. You a lot. He worked quickly while listening carefully to things I was saying. After the final eye scan he went over the results and his diagnosis, making sure I understood them, and explained my prognosis. In conclusion: I found Orange County Retina through my insurance provider search after developing sudden symptoms that were consistent with a retinal tear. (It's not but I'm at-risk for a few months and will be returning for follow ups.) After making the appointment (they got me in quickly) I read many negative reviews. I didn't have the time to look for another retina specialist so I went hoping for the best. Perhaps I was lucky. Perhaps the negative reviews are just a small fraction of their patient base. Based on my experience I would recommend Dr. You and OC Retina to others in need of their services. read more

I was referred to the Orange County Retina Medical Group by my optometrist. I had not experienced any eye issues but based on the recommendation, I thought it was good to have my eyes looked at by a specialist. I was 10 minutes late to the appointment, but the front office was nice to keep my appointment with no questions. I soon learned that the appointments were running almost an hour behind schedule so it didn't matter that I was late. When the nurse called my name, I went through a basic eye exam to test my vision. The nurse was not an optometrist but just checked if I could read letters on a wall. She gave me some eye drops to dilate my eyes and I waited. I waited for almost an hour before the doctor saw me. At this point, I had been in the office for almost two hours. And I was still waiting. I sat in a semi-dark exam room and read outdated magazines. The dilation had nearly worn out so at least I could read. The office is poorly mismanaged, and the appointments are overscheduled Dr. You is only at the Newport Beach office on Tues mornings so I imagine the goal is to stuff as many patients as possible into a four-hour window. read more

I have been coming to this office for several years, and I have to agree with the previous reviews about the wait time. Every visit means a 1-2 hour wait, once I had a three hour wait. You can hear every conversation the doctors are having with patients through the walls, which appear to be paper thin. Most of the staff are very professional, but I had a problem with one of the doctors last year and asked to be switched to Dr. Chen, who was great. If you are concerned about privacy, you might want to consider another office. read more

We were referred here to see the Retina specialist after a PRK treatment. Everything was already healed up & getting better after the treatment until coming here for an exam. Paperwork process was fast. 0 star for the assistant (not sure her name) but she appears to be large in physique and Asian. She took the patient's eye pressure and ended up making a very bad scratch on one of the eyes. First of all, the eyes are one of the most sensitive parts of a human's body, how can you be so careless and rough towards it?? It wasn't that bad in appearance wise at the moment but he was literally in extreme discomfort. Then he was brought in to see Dr. You. Very rough doctor. As a provider myself in the healthcare industry, it's clear when a doctor is rough or gentle on the patients. He just asked few questions & started to check on the eyes and just said patient needs laser treatment on both eyes because there are holes in the back. I had to dig deep into the questions to get a clear answer. The patient even said the doctor was extremely rough on the eye exam. The rest of the day and the next day his eye that was scratched was terribly swollen. Overall we are never seeing these providers again. Will consider seeing a different specialist Dr. Kim within the facility due to a highly recommendation by Dr. Feinerman our PRK surgeon. read more

I was referred to this multi-doctor practice by another doctor because he saw something he thought required a retina specialist. The two practices are in the same building, so I popped downstairs to schedule my appt with OCRM. The receptionist was so rude I stepped outside my own comfort zone and told her "there is a lot of negative energy in your space". Her attitude immediately improved, but I should have taken this as a sign of bigger issues ... today was my appointment and I arrived 15-minutes early, apparently for no reason other than to watch their wall clock. Nearly TWO hours later, I meet Dr. Chen, whom I've heard through the exam room walls chatting up all his patients about skiing, food, etc. He was unapologetic about the wait and actually said, "That's about average here". I suggested it would be a courtesy if new patients were advised of this when making their appt and he said nothing other than, "We almost always do. Sorry 'bout that" (the front desk said the same thing when I checked out). Another hour later and my tests were complete and I was free to leave. I have requested a full copy of my records so I can find another specialist. I will not return to this practice, nor do I recommend it to anyone who values their time. They are quite speedy about processing your co-pay BEFORE you see anyone - too bad they don't consider their patients' time as valuable as their own wallet. UPDATE: I just pulled up my medical records from OCRM and the DOCTOR writes "The cataracts are creating some visual symptoms". I DO NOT HAVE CATARACTS!!! If a medical professional can't even complete accurate patient records, WTF are we paying for in insurance premiums and co-pays? Unbelievable ... read more
