I am scared & at a loss for the lack of concern to my medical situation. Was referred by Maury Regional due to very low oxygen & newly diagnosed with COPD. He recommended home oxygen, nebulizer, pulse-ox to check oxygen levels, a C-Pap machine after home test to be performed. Medical Necessities had an order for only one device/machine that he/his office should have ordered. I ended up going back to the ER due to shortness of breath to Maury Reg & the equipment still not ordered. After having ANOTHER X-ray which showed pneumonia in right lung with still no equipment being ordered from the medical supply without an order for all Dr. Norman per his has promised, I think the most offensive, down right cruel thing was how Chelsea made me call a second time to the medical supply company saying that all that I needed had been ordered 5 minutes before they shut their phones for the weekend w/no emergency service & this was on a Thursday & No one would be back until Monday. Pretty mean thing to do to someone who's disabled, elderly, scared & can't breathe. read more

Waited forever for our appt. I took my mom, age 86, with dementia. They wouldn't let me go back with her. After waiting for 2 hours. I heard her yelling, she was upset at being left alone, plus the 2 hours. I felt when you are checking in, and there is a several hour wait, that you should be I formed that there is a BIG wait. I felt sorry for the others in the packed waiting room. Who all appeared to be over 80. I did tell the dr., I was mad. No apology. I will not subject my mother to this again. I was there 3 hours. I did my homework and knew that this would happen so I came prepared and it really wasn't that big of a deal. The staff was very friendly and did apologize for the long wait. After 2 1/2 hours, I was sitting in an exam room, a man walks in, says hi without even looking at me and sits down with his back to me looking at a computer. He says nothing for several minutes then turns around to discuss my case. This is Dr. Norman I assume as he still has not introduced himself to me! He may be very good but I will go to someone else who will treat me with respect......he's not the only good eye surgeon around. read more

Literally, the worst experience and outcome I have ever had with a doctor. His office (clinic) treats his elderly patients like cattle. I ended up with a vitrectomy for a retinal tear, and my vision has never been the same. I have had to modify my lifestyle. My current retinal specialist is Dr McGuire in Newport and he is wonderful with a great office. read more

Dr. Norman knows his stuff. I see him once a year for something on my retina that, in medical terms, I can't even pronounce. He checks it for me, both visually and with photography, and I am thankful to have a really great doctor helping me with prevention. Because Dr. Norman is really good, his practice is crazy busy. I think that many of his patients are seniors and many appointments are emergencies. The wait time for a scheduled appointment can be long. My personal rule is not to sit in a doctor's waiting room for hours, but I break that rule for Dr. Norman. All you have to do is watch him practically running up and down the halls, and you know that he is working his tail off. The office is easy to find right across the street from Hoag. The parking lot is paid and sometimes it can get a little full. I have not interacted with Dr. Norman's front office staff that much, but they are polite and efficient, and that works for me. I recommend this practice highly. read more

When I was a teenager Dr. Norman treated me for Ocular Toxoplasmosis and did a great job! I remember him being caring, thorough and very knowledgable. To this day the nasty germ is still "asleep" thanks to his persistent treatment. Thank you Doc! read more

So far, very impressed with Dr. Norman. He operated on my Wife for a macular hole. Although we won't know the result of that for some time, the care and treatment so far has been nothing but professional. Yes, his waiting room is usually full and there is usually a wait. This man is a surgeon and his day starts before sunrise. Depending on how his surgery schedule goes, he sees patients after that. I prefer he takes his time with the operation, we can sit and wait a while. Great communication, he explained everything concisely in advance. Pleasant and seemed quite caring. I think some of the other reviewers should consider what is being done here. It is not instant gratification. read more

Grateful to Dr Norman for treating me for retina detachment. Agree with other reviewers that the "wait" is unusually long... but perhaps it's par for the course. This was my first visit to a retina specialist. The verdict was unexpected and I was grateful Dr Norman was able to provide immediate solutions. We will continue to monitor both eyes -- as the other is high risk. Fingers crossed everything will be fine... but confident that I'm in good hands -- once you get past the front desk. read more

I can't thank Dr. Norman enough! He has saved my eyesight twice now! As far as I'm concerned Dr. Norman is star in his field. People wait to see stars because they're worth it. They're a cut above the rest. I would wait to see a rockstar or a favorite political figure and to me, being able to receive Dr. Norman's care, is of equivalent importance. He saved my right eye from a terrible emergency retinal tear 14 years ago and I've been seeing him ever since. My eye was in a dire condition and I'm glad he was the retinal specialist on call. His skill set is priceless! When you see him, he focuses on you and gets to know you and your eye issues. He takes care and time which is incredibly critical when it involves your eyesight. I wouldn't want it any other way. Dr. Norman is cheerful, kind, considerate and respectful. He hires equally delightful people and I've always had great experiences with his entire staff. He has also now saved my left eye from macular degeneration and has been treating that for 4 years. I can't thank him enough for all he has done for me and my eyesight. Yes, bring a snack and some water and be ready to chat with other patients or listen to an audiobook. You get your pressure read at the beginning and then your eyes are dilated. The dilation drops are part of the wait. He needs to be able to see the back of your eye so he needs to let the medicine work on your eyes. Often they take pictures of your retina and that takes time too. This doctor is a treasure and I'm grateful that I've been his patient. read more

Last September I had a terrible accident and nearly lost my eye. Dr. Norman came to see me at Hoag hospital and immediately began to prep me for a complex surgery. He came to begin (after a long day of seeing patients) the surgery at 6pm. It took 4 hrs but he was able to repair the terrible mess I made with my eye. My wife, 6 months pregnant at the time, spoke to him afterwards. He was thoughtful in how he treated her and fully answered all her questions. It was very late when he left. The next morning (early)I was surprised when I saw a full room of people for him to see. I was amazed by his energy and professionalism knowing the task he had accomplished the night before. The wait was fine, no more or less then every other medical facility in the entire country. Once again he thoughtfully explained to my worried wife everything that was happening. He has since performed 4 more surgeries successfully and each time we learn what the hospital staff already knows, "Dr. Norman is AMAZING! " When my wife and I went to see UCI for a second opinion, they were unable to help me any further than Dr. Norman had. All three specialists spoke very highly of him. I'm still under his care and thankful to be his patient. Had I ended up anywhere else on the night of my injury I would not have an eye today. I highly recommend Dr. Norman. Three surgeries in two years. Over 25 office visits and he never spent over five minutes with me. Calling to make an appointment you can't get in for two months. Once there you wait over an hour for your couple of minutes of doctors time. I never really knew what was wrong with my eyes. Every question I asked the doctor had one foot out the door. I am sure he is a fine doctor but he is way too overbooked . This doctor and office is too hectic and I was never comfortable. I finally went to another specialist. read more

Doesnt Validate,! Condescending & RUDE. I show up 10 minutes early for a 2:30 appt, and wasn't seen till 3:20. And it's like this EVERY TIME. I'm the big idiot for keep going back to him, but he's close. The staff tries to apologize, but it's not worth anything because I know he'll Do it to me next time. I have seen Dr. Norman for two years for macular degeneration. Made an appointment for May 2018. When I called to confirm the appointment, front office told me I was dropped as a patient. I found another doctor. My husband had a detached retina and he was kept on as a patient. Go figure. His appointment was today at 10:30 am. He did not get out of the office until 1:45pm. We both had appointments at our internist at 1 pm and 1:20 which we had to cancel as my husband was still waiting to see Dr. Norman. Problem is we live in Palm Desert and could not reschedule the internist appointments. Quite honestly the women in the office could have cared less. Be prepared to sit, sit ,sit and then wait, wait. It seems the office people are scheduling patients back to back to back. Not a very friendly or accommodating front office. Dr. Norman is a great doctor if you have time to make it an all day affair. Better ways to organize patients needs addressing. Too many patients and only one doctor. Seems Dr. Norman need another doctor in his practice to handle the OVERLOAD OF CLIENTS. read more

I am a Director of a Cancer Treatment Clinic and I was referred to Dr. Norman's Clinic for a Retina issue by my Ophthalmologist, Dr. Cies in Newport. My Nevis on my Retina had been reviewed previously by a Specialist but he thought it may have changed. I arrived and waited over an hour in the crammed, dirty waiting area with unfriendly staff. Many elderly Medicare patients were dropped off and told their Drivers they often take 3-4 hours to be seen. I was finally seen by a nurse, who despite my explanation of having had a thorough eye exam and testing by Cies office insisted upon retesting - given dilation drops put in a dark, dirty crammed room with patients. I had explained I dilate easily and sure enough the tech called me first to have the Nevis testing - 2 hours later - I was then told to wait and there were 7-8 patients in front of me at 5:00 pm! I explained I had NEVER waited this long at the former Retina specialist and I had to leave for a birthday party. I asked them to forward the fotos taken. Upon checking out informed rudely they do not validate and if I wanted to come back I would have to go through the exact same process to see the Physician!! No apologies for any of the delay. My eyes were dilated until 11:00 PM - I could hardly drive - not informed I needed to bring a driver with me! THE worse patient experience ever! Two ratings in one: Dr. Norman -- 5 STARS: Excellent, profession, caring, friendly. Dr. Norman's office manager -- ZERO STARS, unprofessional and completely lacking in the qualities that make Dr. Norman so good. I suggest a divorce. I visited Dr. Norman on 3/20/15 due to a problem with a torn retina. He had me fixed up in no time and I was extremely happy with the results. I heard nothing more about this service until 1/11/16 when I was contacted by a collection agency looking for the balance due. I called Dr. Norman's office. My insurance company statement of benefits was received: 7/15/15. The first invoice was sent by Dr. Norman's office: 7/24/15 The second invoice was sent by Dr. Norman's office: 9/25/15 The account was sent for collections to TransWorld: 9/25/15 or 10/14/15 The third invoice was sent by Dr. Norman's office; 10/30/15 TransWorld Phase 1 started (5 letters sent, none rec'd): 10/30/15 TransWorld Phase 2 started: 1/6/16 TransWorld calls me: 1/11/16 My check is mailed to TransWorld - payment in full: 1/14/16 I feel very bad for Dr. Norman. He did a great job and deserves the full amount. I immediately attempted to find out what happened and why this hadn't been brought to my attention earlier. Obviously sending by USPO was not creating communication, so this is why we have phones, Federal Express, Registered Mail, Certified Mail, etc. I talked with very polite and helpful people at TransWorld. Yesterday, I talked with a very polite and helpful person in Dr. Norman's office. The information I received help me understand the problems. Today, I called his office manager to round out some details. She told me the reason she didn't make a five minute phone call to me, instead of sending for collections, was that refuses to call customers because sometimes she get answering machines and she doesn't like them. Instead of phoning, she would rather send this account for collections when it was 60 days past due (assuming the due date is the original invoice date). She also told me mine was the only the second account that's gone for collections in her 10 years in his office. (So I'm only asking her to make one phone call in 10 years?) She proceeded to tell me I was unwelcome in Dr. Norman's office and I can never return. She was rude, disrespectful and extremely unprofessional in her manner to me. She was definitely not a good representative for Dr. Norman. So Dr. Norman, thank you for a great job on my eye. I would recommend you to anyone at all, very highly. When I called your office, Denise was so aggressively hostile to me, calling me a dead beat and then basically hanging up on me that I never had a chance to tell her I was going to pay the balance between the amount billed and the amount remitted by to you by the collection agency, At this point I will take her at he word and will never cross your threshold again. Extremely disappointed with Dr. Norman's unprofessionalism. I have a floater that interferes with my vision, particularly since I work at a computer all day. When I told him that it was really interfering with my job because I'm trying to see through what looks like a spiderweb, his response was "Get another job." Seven years ago I was referred to Dr. Norman for a detached retina. He worked me into his overloaded Monday schedule, examined me, and got me in for emergency surgery at 5pm that day. And yes, that was after seeing all his scheduled patients and who knows how many other emergency last minute additions like myself. And he did a fantastic job! I have no doubt that he saved my eyesight. I saw him regularly for several years, as he followed the progress of my eye. Yes, sometimes I waited hours past my appointment time, but I NEVER forgot that one time it was me, with my emergency, that screwed up his schedule. Recently, I've had some complications from cataract surgery, and had to go back. I can't even express how relieved I was to be back under his incredible expertise, knowing I was in the most competent hands imaginable. His kindness and understanding is palpable. He explains everything in plain English, not doctor-ese. He also tells it like it is, but does so with compassion, knowing that to virtually everybody he sees, talking about your eyesight is inevitably pushing a hot button. I swear he never loses sight of that. Hi office staff has always been friendly and efficient. I can attest that over the course of seven years, a lot of his staff has remained in his employ, so they really know what they're doing. Overall, I can't imagine a more knowledgeable, competent and kind doctor. I wish I could say the same about all doctors, but Dr. Norman really stands out. read more

Last Wednesday, I had an appointment with Dr. Norman. After sitting in his waiting room over an hour, and listening to the crowd of others who had also been waiting (many as much as three hours) I asked the receptionist why the great wait. She informed me that nothing could be done, that is the way it is. He said this is because Dr. Norman is very professional and spends more time with some patients, so others must wait. I have news for that office, every doctor worthy of the name spends the necessary time with his patients. And, of course, we don't mind, it could happen to any of us. It is the nature of his office to be like a free clinic - not a professional doctor's office. He has a crowd of people waiting for his convenience, not for the patients. And we can wait endlessly. It is difficult to believe that he thinks of himself as an excellent doctor when he has such contempt for his patients. If he was even a decent doctor - like all of the others in the country - he would find a way to manage the time of his patients with some fundamental sense of respect. read more

I like Dr Norman...I hate the wait. I have been seeing him the last few months and every time I go in, I get called back for my turn at least and hour and a half to two hours AFTER my appointment time, even when I schedule my appts as early as they have them. It was sad the last time I was there when the front desk staff told an old gentlemen that he was 20 min late, he didn't call, and they couldn't see him that day, rescheduling him for 4 days later. There needs to be some more org in that front office to get the patients in and out in a more timely manner...something is wrong there. read more

Dr. Norman is certainly competent, but he has far too many patients for a solo practice, Yesterday 12/4/15, I arrived 15 minutes early for a 10AM appointment. Mine was a routine retina exam. The waiting room was jammed when I arrived, and it stayed that way. I did not see the doctor until 4 hours later. He should bring in a partner or hire an associate to help share the workload and reduce the waiting time. read more
