To prepare for the dreaded eye exam at the DMV later this spring, I decided to update my reading glasses so I used my VSP plan to have my eyes examined. I always prefer an ophthalmalogist and Dr. Gary S. Reiter and his staff, Karen and Chuck, were extraordinary from the time I made my appointment by phone to my arrival and departure from their office. They let me try on diffraction frames at a leisurely pace and I was able to take selfies as a reference to what I want to consider when I return to order my frames. His staff is very nice every time I go into his office. He even offers you coffee or water. My husband and two daughters go to him too. They except my insurance. If one is into assembly line medical care, where you see the doctor after you have been examined by many others, and then the doctor appears and is obviously rushing off to see other waiting patients, then Dr. Gary Reiter is definitely not for you. However, if you want old fashioned, hands on "Dr. Kildare" style care, then Dr. Righter is your only choice. Dr. Reiter is mightily experienced, and performs all major tests himself, and then takes all the time necessary to explain your case in detail and answers every possible question. Over many years I was occasionally exposed to the former type of medicine, and now know I could never see anyone other than Dr. Reiter. I will do James O. one better: I would give Dr. Reiter 7 stars if I could. My story is that I needed to have cataract surgery in both eyes and I was a very cfomplicated medical case. I'll spare you the details of why but suffice it to say that it was a challenge to give me vision that would come close to even 20-40 after the surgery. I knew from friends in the medical community that Dr. Reiter has a reputation as an "opthamologist's opthamologist." Other opthamologists send him especially complex cases and patients come to see him from all over the world. So I decided to have him do my cataract surgeries on both eyes. In sum, I obtained spectacular results. I now see 20-20 with one eye and 20-15 with the other with no side effects. And this is someone who before the surgery (and since I was about 12) couldn't cross a room without bumping into things because I was so extremely far-sighted without my corrective lenses. Dr. Reiter's follow-up care was also exceptional. For example,when I went for my first follow-up visit after my first surgery, Dr. Reiter saw a possible issue with my retina that, out of cauton, he wanted a retina specialist to look at, and although it was about 5:30m p.m., he was able to get me in to see the specialist about 15 minutes later. Now that's service! (Fortunately, the retina specialist said I was ok.) read more

The staff was great she said come right over and will get you in. Arrived 15 minutes later walked in and a very warm inviting staff very clean and cozy office. Dr. Reiter performed cataract surgery on my left eye on August 23, 2017, and cataract surgery on my right eye on September 6, 2017. My results have been amazing. I am so grateful for the gift of sight that has been restored to me by Dr. Reiter, Karen, Chuck, and Liz in Doctor Reiter's offices, and Dr. Vigil and Dr. English, along with all of the staff at Newport Memorial Care Surgery center. They are an extraordinarily talented team, and each played their role perfectly in the preparation, the surgeries, and then in my recovery. Before surgery, I was 20/750 or so with astigmatism, myopia, and presbyopia. After surgery, I can see 20/20, borderline 20/15, with both eyes and with virtually all astigmatism gone. The range of colors and depth of perception is truly amazing. To see clearly around the house, at business meetings, on the water, on a hiking trail, without need of glasses has given me back a freedom that I have not had for 30 years since my first eyeglass prescription. When I knew that I needed cataract eye surgery, I checked around. I knew that Dr. Reiter is regarded as the ophthalmologist's ophthalmologist. He has a worldwide clientele including heads of Fortune 100 companies and heads of university ophthalmology departments. Plus, he had performed cataract surgery on my mom and my mom's eyes are still crystal clear after 25 years. During preparation for my surgeries, Dr. Reiter, Karen, and Chuck were the consummate professionals in their ability to explain the process and the choices, and in handling all of the details so that my focus could be on working with Dr. Reiter to get the best outcome possible, healing, and getting on with life. Doctor Reiter was great at explaining the plusses and minuses of the various options as to lens implants, talking about his and other surgeons' experiences with different lenses, and then recommending a course of action. After talking through the options with Doctor Reiter, I picked the Symfony Extended Range Multifocal IOL Lens for my left and right eyes. I'm glad that I made the decision I did. Dr. Reiter provides detailed instructions for the preparation for surgery, the day of surgery, and the recovery. Karen, who is also the operating room nurse and so knows the surgery well, filled in additional questions for me as to getting ready for the surgery and afterwards during recovery. Karen also goes over the billing and costs of the procedure in a clear manner and there are no surprises there. About a week out, the surgery center starts interacting with you checking on arrangements. All conversations by the surgery center are done in a professional clear manner and again no surprises as to the surgery or costs. Both surgeries came and went without any surprises and were successful. During each surgery, I was under anesthesia but in twilight mode so that I was still aware and could respond to requests from Dr. Reiter (look at this light, look at that light, adjust position slightly, etc.). During the surgery, Dr. Reiter lets you know how the surgery is going and reassures you as the procedure happens so no worry or anxiety. There was no pain or discomfort for me as to either surgery. Dr. Reiter, Karen, and Chuck went the extra mile in making sure all my questions were answered. Dr. Reiter makes sure that you remain comfortable so that your focus can be on healing. More than once while healing I sent Dr. Reiter a txt with a picture of my eyes with a question "Is this normal?" and, bing, the response to my txt would come right away no matter the time of night (a couple of times at 2 a.m.) along with a "don't worry that will heal," or "we need to take a look," and a clear explanation or guidance as to how to handle the question including getting me into the office without waiting if that was necessary or if I had a concern. My feeling throughout the preparation, surgery, and recovery process was that Dr. Reiter was side by side with me every step of the way guiding and fostering healing. The technology is amazing. Dr. Reiter told me after my second surgery that ten years ago that we would not have been able as predictably to get the results that we had gotten on my eyes but that with technology and surgery experience the range of the possible had truly increased for people needing cataract surgery. Dr. Reiter's years of experience in performing eye surgeries and caring for patients before and after eye surgeries really paid off for me. I have had numerous surgeries over the years: 3 knee "scopes,"4 total knee replacements, a heart stent, etc. I had considerable surgery room experience as a volunteer assistant during my pre-med college days, and have known dozens of physicians. He has treated he for macular degeneration and cataracts. He did cataract surgery on each eye in December 2016 and January 2017. Both surgeries went very well. He and his talented staff were great during the pre and post surgery experiences. In addition to his obvious outstanding surgical skills, Dr. Reiter is absolutely the most personable, caring, and follow up doctors I have known. His people skills are exceptional. Don't go to this Doctor, his office is a bunch of crooks, I had a doctor referral from my doctor to get a exam for glasses, so I made an appointment and when I went to Dr, Reiter's office and they took all my paperwork and my insurance card and after my exam they informed me they don't take my insurance, so I had to pay out of pocket $175.00 . I asked them why they didn't tell me before I had the exam that they don't take my insurance (United Health Care), and they said, "oh" we did tell you. I was stupid for going to this Doctor. But I am not stupid when I am told we don't take your insurance. They never told me until AFTER they did the exam. read more

When I went to renew my California driver's license, I didn't pass the DMV eye examination and I had to have a doctor examine my eyes so that I could pass the DMV eye examination. Dr. Reiter and his staff performed very though eye examinations and determined that I had cataracts that needed to be removed in order to correct my vision. Dr. Reiter and his staff, Karen, Yvette and Charles, were very comforting and supportive in helping me in reaching the decision to have the cataract surgery. When it came time to have the surgery, Dr. Reiter explained every step of the operation and gave me detailed instructions on how to care for my eyes before and after the surgery As a trained engineer, I saw Dr. Reiter take extensive measurements during his examinations of my eyes to make certain that the surgery would be successful. I am comfortable knowing that Dr. Reiter and his staff are available if there is an emergency. Dr. Reiter asked me if I wanted far or near lenses. I replied: "I want the lenses that you would have". I opted for the far lenses. I am extremely crateful to Dr. Reiter for all of the professionalism and care that he exhibited in this journey of cataract surgery. My vision is very clear and sharp and colors are bright and vivid. I am thrilled that I had the cataract surgery and I am now seeing better that I have in many, many years. Dr. Reiter is simply the best ophthalmologist around. I have been extremely nearsighted since childhood, and went to him for 20 years for regular stuff. He kept my vision and health of my eyes in tip top shape. A few years ago I changed jobs and due to all this nonsense nat'l insurance business, I had to make the decision to change doctors since Dr Reiter was no longer an option on my new plan. What a disaster. Long story short, I had such a bad experience last 3 years with other dr that I just paid out of pocket to go back to Dr Reiter for 2nd opinion. W/in 5 minutes he discovered that at 48 I had a very bad cataract in my right eye. The other doctor never noticed this and just kept throwing power at it, none of which worked so I had terrible vision last 18 months. Dr. Reiter just performed flawless cataract surgery on me and I can now see perfectly on that eye! The surgery with his team was a breeze. No pain whatsoever, not even the slightest feelings of irritation before, during or after. Simply amazing to me! He is very particular with instructions which I followed to the letter. I have been a patient of Dr. Reiter's for more than ten years and during that time he has fitted me with monovision contact lenses that enabled me to go with out eyeglasses. He happily made adjustments to my prescriptions, as needed, tweaking the lens power to give me the best possible vision. He has been tracking a growing cataract in my eye and the time had come for surgery. He recommended that I watch the surgical procedure on YouTube which familiarized me with what was going to take place during the surgery so it was not scary.. During the pre- op exam he found evidence of a condition that he felt would not respond well to laser surgery and multi focal lens.. After studying the data, he decided to fit me with an implanted lens that allows me to continue to have monovision. I truly appreciated his conservative solution. He performed the surgery yesterday withoutstanding results. Looking forward to the surgery on my other eye in two weeks. Great office staff and service. Definitely 5 stars. read more

I have worn glasses for 65 years. Dr. Reiter suggested that I have cataract surgery on my last visit. I was impressed by the time he took in explaining the surgical process. He took about 45 minutes to explain the operation. I was completely at ease during the operations. He does one eye and then about two weeks later the other eye. I expected to see better after the first operation but when I realized that I was shaving without my glasses I was amazed. I have now had the second eye done and the results are spectacular. I can read and watch television without glasses. I was totally dependent on glasses before. If you are considering a Ophthalmologist go to Dr. Reiter.
