I don't mind this club! I think it has changed a bit since management has changed a couple of years ago, as the music is different and the vibes are a bit different than before. The vibes are cool. The music is chill. The owner and security are easy to talk to and promote a safe space for people of color and the LGTBQ community. They have weekly rotation on food trucks outside in the patio if you want some food. Been going here for years. The theme parties they throw are fun. It's a pretty busy place from what I could tell . But service was good and a nice place to meet new people for a night out.

Orchid is a great spot when you have those nights where you just want to get out and dance. Some nights I'll just people watch with friends and then the other nights I'm Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing. It's usually a $5 cover to get in and coat check only costs $1( and of course they accept tips because at this point who doesn't). They have one of the best drink specials around with their $2 you call it's until 11pm, which in a nutshell means that about 85% of all their drinks and shots are only $2 until 11, and the DJ calls out drink specials after that throughout the night. The music switches back and forth from hip hop to EDM and back to hip hop all throughout the night. Now you NEVER know what you're going to see here. For example, last time there was a man dancing with a walker and you just don't see that everyday! But everyone was having a good time nonetheless. In the summer they open up the up the patio and they have a separate bar outside and every night before the close they give away free pizza! Super fun place all around. read more

Meh. I wish I could give this spot a better rating but I just can't. The entry price for most nights is pretty expensive, upwards of $15 per person for a regular night it seems. That's a big cover for such a small, average place. The drinks are also very watered down and are also a bit overpriced. As for being a venue for live music, it was pretty alright. I wish they didn't allow people to moshpit when average rock bands are playing. It's weird and not really the place for that. Overall, I didn't really have fun here and probably would not return unless something cool is going on. It was also dead when I went and no I was not there early either. Oh well. read more

WE WERE THERE FOR AN HOUR! I visited based off my friends recommendation and left very dissatisfied. We got there at 10:00pm to be kicked out at 11:10, for no reason. Me and my friends were approached by security to leave, with no reason given. We sat on the barstools from the time we got there, besides drinks, and was all of the sudden kicked out. Since I'm not sure of the reason I can't say what we did to have to leave but I would caution those who visit this place that you may for no reason be asked to leave! We had a great night until my friend bumped a grown man and he couldn't let it go and tried to fight us and then we ran to security while he CHASED US to them and they let him stay while he called us names and we left because they wouldn't kick him out and make us feel comfortable. We won't be going back because he called us names as we walked out the building and as we walked past the back Padio and he yelled slurs at us as we left. I personally don't see all the hype about this place. I went on a Friday because apparently that's the best day to go. It wasn't very busy on a Friday at 11:30. The music was pop/rap hits of the 2010's - which, although I like to listen to, I just can't dance to it. The stage was pretty dark and there was a spot for a dancer but there was no dancer inside of the dancer area. This use to be one of my favorite clubs until last night. Didn't know there were new owners before booking for my birthday party. They didn't let my friend in because cause he had on timberlands. Not even 10 min later let someone with the same shoes. Same with my other friend with sweat pants on. They let people in before and after them with the same stuff on they just picking and choosing. I'm there every weekend... Friday nights are my favorite! The crowd is always so diverse that anyone should feel comfortable to let loose and party. Plus, the staff is super focused on making sure that women, especially, feel comfortable to have fun. If a guy is making any lady feel uncomfortable and being inappropriate, the security will make sure that it is taken care of immediately. Definitely a great place for girls night out or a bachelorette party! PLUS, no other place I've been can compare with the drink specials! read more

This was the 2nd stop of the night of our Surprise Birthday Party Bus. When the bouncer saw there were more than 20 of us disembarking, he radioed to the front door not to charge us a cover. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Wasn't even there an hour with 2 of my friends and was kicked out for absolutely no reason and was never given an answer when we asked what the reason was. We were no where close to being intoxicated nor did we even interact with anyone. We kept to ourselves and were enjoying our time. The security was extremely rude and threatened to calls the cops when we simply asked what was the reason we had to leave. It was embarrassing and demeaning. I'm in town from Los Angeles. My friends and I wanted to dance and this place was next door to where we had cocktails. $5 to enter and $1 to coat check. Not bad at all. We enter and I have a jack and coke that's $5.25. The music was mostly electronic and it was SO loud. I'm only 26 and I'm always at concerts, clubs, and music festivals but my ears are literally still ringing and ive been home for two hours. Plus its just not a good place to dance. If you want to get super drunk and bounce around then come here. If you like good music and dancing, I'd stay away. Wasn't a bad place, but I probably wouldn't come back. read more

A few friends and I went to The Orchid this past weekend and had a great time. Bartenders were friendly and provided quick, great service. I dropped my phone at some point throughout the night and the managers of The Orchid were quick to respond to my Facebook messages. The following day, even though they were closed, they let me drop by to pick up my phone. I went with two of my girlfriends to Orchid last weekend to have a girls night out. We had been there and to Luna many times before. We were seated by a waitress at a table that was not originally ours because they gave my friends table away. No problem. The waitress asked us to wait ten minutes to see if anyone came to claim the other table at 9:55. When no one did, she told us to sit there. We were approached by a belligerent man at 11:00 telling us we had a lot of nerve to take his table and he told us we had to move. I went and told the assistant manager that we were having issues with a man and I thought he was going to cause trouble and he said he was aware of the problem. I refused to move and told the other patron to get the manager. He instead came back with two very large African American bouncers who told us we had to move. I again refused and told them to get the manager. I was shoved out of my seat by the bouncer. The bouncer kept shoving me to the point where I had to call attention to the people around me and yell help because the bouncer would not stop shoving me. He spilled my drink on me and assaulted me. I approached the manager, which was probably just a shift manager about this, she apologized, said she wished the bouncer would have come and got her, and told us she could get us another table. It wasn't about the table. It was about the abuse of power that your bouncers felt they could enact on someone unprovoked. This club is responsible for hiring bullies that have no right to touch a woman inappropriately and shove her around. The manager would not give me the name of the bouncer because she claimed she didn't know it. I went and filed a police report regarding this because I don't feel that anyone has a right to assault another person. The management is responsible for this and they won't return my calls. I'm hoping the police are able to get in touch with them. I have told all of my friends not to go there and many of them live in the Ferndale and surrounding areas and use to go to this bar. I am appalled at the response of the management from Orchid. This is a terrible establishment and I know my friends and I will not be spending our hard earned money here ever again. read more

I am not now nor have I ever been a club kid. However, I have shaken my rump liberally across the globe at various clubs, discoteques, and dance halls because this girl has dance in her pants. However, this ailment has no outlet at Orchid. This club is hopelessly '90s sans the numerous flat screens strewn across the walls and were it not for the $2 per anything-drink special between 9pm and 11pm on Saturdays (might be on other days, too, but I will not be investigating any further into this), this would be one dead crowd. Sad when people have to be under the influence to have fun but that's the vibe I get here. That said, there is a good mix of people up on the floor, from self-entitled ferndale floozies to long-term detroit inhabiters (the former had me fast-forwarding mentally to a night spent in lock up since their attitude had my fist clenching from the start). However, the mix of music was not as enticing - to me, anyway. It was hip hop night but as our hosts proclaimed, "That means there will be 10 minutes of hip hop and hours of the other stuff." And so it was. And the other stuff was utterly undanceable pop house dance hits. I would say it's just me who can't dance to this stuff but even the people who were on the floor were doing these awkward drunk sways coupled with random staccato bops and then stiff arhythmic convulsions. Old review :I have only been here a few times on Saturdays, but Its always fun. Sat its 2$ you call it from 9-11pm. So drinking ciroc on the rocks splash of water , for 2$ is not bad! the club alternates a DJ and the house Band, then eventually its jest the DJ. the music is your top 40 remixed and the place is covered in tvs with music videos. I like it here better than LUNAS (same owner) i feel like the crowd is Older (by older i mean not only 21 year olds) and very mixed (ages, styles, vibe, everything) . It is ferndale anyway! We had our friends 30th bday here and it was a blast dancing the night away. We reserved a table for free and got a bottle of champagne for free too for bringing the group, the night was great. I used to go to the Q, Monkey Bar, and a few times to The 9, but they all kind of fizzled and was never busy enough,,, but i am happy that the interior has changed a bit, it is more intimate with the stage taking up some room. the bar and bath rooms are in the same spot, there is still coat check and a 5$ entrance fee, but if drinks are 2$, i dont mind the fee... Get to know a cocktail server and then you will never have to wait in line at the bar either.... Let me start out by saying that I really WANT to love this place. In fact I USED to love this place. I wrote a story about it for Ferndale Friends and sung its praises. This place was pretty much the epitome of where I wanted to go on Saturday nights. Then it changed. A lot. So much that I really regret writing an article about how great this place is. Saturday nights used to feature a very eclectic crowd and fantastic live music. The bands they invited were all top quality cover bands (and even a good quality band doing original music once) that played a range of music as diverse as the crowd. They never took themselves too seriously, but they were seriously talented. Recently it's been generic late 90s hiphop song after song. Not stuff that really invites dancing, and the music videos, well let's say they're not exactly light-hearted. One night, many songs were punctuated by the DJ announcing a different bachelorette party, which lead to the collective squeals of penis-hat and glittery-sash wearing women. There were three in the space of one hour by the time I left. I don't want to rail against bachelorette parties, and while they might be having fun, being part of their spectacle of the absurd really isn't very fun for me. To make it worse, I've commented on their Facebook page multiple times trying to ask about the lack of live music. My questions have been met with deletion. If Orchid continues on its current course, good for them, but I won't be attending. I only wish I could retract my earlier rave review. read more

It's been quite some time since this "30 something" has been to a dance club. I wasn't sure what to expect but my friend was raving about this place so I was pretty excited (pause) until we walked in the door and saw the crowd. It felt like we were at a high school dance for the the first hour and a half. Everyone was crowded around the dance floor but nobody was buzzed enough to dance. The music was definitely not the problem, the clientele at this place was. The guys looked like they had just graduated from high school last weekend. It was really bad. If it wasn't for the 2 dollar drinks, we probably would have left sooner. The later it got, the worse it was. My friend did say that she went on a Saturday last time so maybe there is a drastic difference in the crowds on Friday vs. Saturday. Let's hope so. read more

Well, I was already a fan of Luna in Royal Oak... and this is basically Luna 2.0 in Ferndale. $2 you call its are awesome, but dangerous (Just ask the Uber driver who's car had to be hosed down of my birthday "fun"). We were rolling 16 deep for my Bday on a cold post new years Saturday. I had called earlier that day to reserve a table, and they could only get us a 4 top. But the people with the other 2 next to us didn't show, so we usurped them. They did get pretty busy later in the night, but I don't think it was packed (though I could be wrong... pretty far gone by the end of the night!) Music on Saturday was a fun mix of Electronic Alt... could have maybe been a little more Alty? But hey, still better than the straight top 40 crap or 80's anthems most places rock. Big dance floor, good bartenders, nice bouncers. I'm getting a little too old for these types of places, but you'll have my business at least a couple more years! read more
