So just to be 100% honest, the well is definitely a dive bar. So you basically get what you get when you come here. It has decent music so don't get it twisted, it has plenty of space, they're not a lot of seats though so you'll be standing around most likely. But is a dive bar vibe. Don't expect fancy martinis or anything like that. They always have specials though. So if you can't get your Tito's lemon drop, you can get two for five beers or something LOL. The service is what you would expect from a busy location. I mean, it's pretty much nothing but bar so with only like two bartenders you got to wait at the end of the day. So just be conscientious of that and give it Grace because you are getting a service that you expect to come to contact with while you walk into a dive bar. I've been going there for years. Well before I moved, it is a staple and I feel like it's never going to die. It is always consistent and it'll give you exactly what you need. It's really good for pre-drinking because of drinks are fairly cheap, so keep that in mind. If you do go, you might want to go ahead and consider parking. Parking is going to be street parking because there's no lot specifically for this establishment. But there is plenty of parking in after a certain time in Detroit it's going to be free. If you are going to go ahead and do the well, it's best to go ahead and start the night with that so you don't have to worry about too many expensive drinks your at your actual location. And then after that You may want to consider finishing the night there. After you've had all the fancy dinners and stuff, if you want to go ahead and wrap up the night with a couple of cheap drinks, this is the place for you. read more

The well is literally the perfect name for this place I have gone here a handful of times over the last decade.. its a very simple bar but its downtown. Parking can be tricky but drink are fair price vibe is awesome and its basically a rectangle shaped bar with a handful of seats and alot of standing room. its pretty small but its a neat place and a staple of the city i feel like service has always been good when i was there no complaints there. read more

This is a quintessential Detroit bar. Great place to hit in your way to either. Detroit Tiger game or. Detroit Lions game. About a 10 -15 minute walk to either venue. I almost gave this spot one star for the DJ's lack of having "Whip My Hair" in his arsenal but, God blessem, he downloaded that ish and I got my hurr whippin' on! Congrats, The Well! You're back in the game! Overall, The space isn't much to look at. When we walked in my friend's friend exclaimed, "it looks like someone's basement!" Which is pretty accurate. The back room is all drywall, air hockey tables, and linoleum. Totally finished basement-core. Luckily, the actual bar is a little warmer--exposed brick, nice wood detailing, etc. It's a bit of a "dude" bar and you WILL get drunk guys dancing up on you but if you're there with friends and you have a good sense of humor it ain't no thang. In all honesty it's not really the place I would probably choose to spend most nights out but I was out with some friends and we wanted to drink and dance so the Well did the trick. The drinks are cheap, the DJ is fairly atrocious as far as DJs are concerned but he'll play the top 40 hits folks like to dance to which can be fun (and, as I mentioned, he'll download a track if he doesn't have it). No cover, which is nice, and the staff seems pretty amiable. It can get pretty cramped and crowded but the dance floor was relatively clear. I don't think I'd make this a regular spot but I did enjoy my time here, as long as you hit it with a good group of fun friends! PS- they have a very large fan which is perfect for optimal hair whippin' and sexy 80s hair metal dance posing, if that matters to you. Which it obviously should. read more

The crowd at The Well is a little bit schizophrenic, so it all depends on what nights you go. During sporting events this is a sports bar. Cheap drinks, TVs, and pretty much everyone tuned into the game. On other nights, especially Saturday nights, they have a DJ, the front part of the relatively narrow bar becomes a dance floor and it's a pretty wild night. It gets pretty packed, and it is apparently a favorite of bachelorette parties. Either way is a guaranteed good night, just know what you're getting yourself into. read more

Looks like it was marked as closed but I was there so I suggested Yelp open the doors back up... good job to them for listening. :-) Fun bar, prices amazing, friendly staff and the clientele were lots of fun. So they don't wimp out on alcohol, nothing worse than some arrogant, self-absorbed, overpriced, trendy place, that "waters" down the drink with light pours. If you like it a little lighter,they will pour a little more mixer in a side glass. While most happy hours end at 6PM theirs (at least on the day I went) ended at 8PM, even after that their prices were very inexpensive. Great for hangin out with friends! read more

The bartender Megan is terrific at her job. If I was a restaurant owner I would want her behind the bar she doesn't only engage with the customer but she takes care of everybody around her I hope that I didn't mess up the spelling of her name because I even ask her how she spell her name because I didn't want to mess up. She definitely deserves that job and people need to understand that someone like her are hard to get so I will definitely be back. Phone stolen. Was sitting at a table near street (also near 2 bouncers) and my phone was stolen. I walked inside to check on a drink and my phone was no longer at my table . Had it when I was there and left without. Bouncers were very uncooperative and also did not give owners name neither did bartender ...odd. No assistance at all! .. Changing my opinion on this bar in the wake of our experience this weekend. The bartenders make okay drinks, however, they over serve, & even allow people who are stumbling around in a stupor to order seven tequila shots. Yes you read that correctly-seven. I understand that you're trying to make a buck, but at the same time the safety of your patrons should enter your ethics radar. With the exception of the bouncer taking IDs, the bouncers are rude as hell & have no uniform on to indicate that they're even bouncers. So it's really weird when they start viciously questioning people in the bar & no ones really sure whether they even work there because they're wearing sweatpants & look like they're four five seconds from taking a nap. read more

Stopped in here on Cinco De Mayo. Kind of a divey place but great atmosphere. Bartenders were very attentive and nice! Wow, I was surprised at how reasonably priced the drinks were. I was with a group of people and we had a great time. There is some seating outside as well. DJ played a little later in the day and loved the fact they played throwback hip/hop and pop. The best Dive bar in my life. I have a couple Detroit Dive watering holes I call my home. The Well makes happy hour happier. At $2.50 a pop for gin and tonic I cannot find a better place to hangout with my girls. Coming here since 2010 with my bestie for St. Patty's Day debauchery I quickly found myself coming back as a regular. On Friday and Saturday nights, I can meet a cute guy, have several drinks, dance and sit out on the porches and chill. It's downtown but it's not stuffy or hipster. They have music, GOOD music and great bar tenders. The crowd is diverse and can waver in any sub-cultural direction on any given night. This bar is very Detroit and should be a barmark for real bar hoppers. I mean, it is called the Well, come have a drink or three! read more

One time at this bar and I'm good with it! Why have I never been here before? I went to hang out with friends and it definitely served its purpose. It is a straight forward bar -- no frills, nothing fancy. Just a bar with high top tables, a nice sized bar front with stools, y'know.... a BAR. Love the outdoor patio, too. My time spent at this bar was one of the worst I've ever had in the city. A number of the staff were rude to patrons and the drink selection was almost nonexistent. There was also a shooting that took place during my visit where the staff was not accommodating and told the customers to get out because "that's not their problem." I would not recommend this place to anyone and will not patron there again. One star is even too great a rating to give this place. There are far better and more respectful businesses in the city that would love to have more patrons. If you're in Detroit, do not go here. You're welcome. read more

I frequently patronize The Well and this past Saturday a group of friends and myself went on an impromptu bar crawl. When we got there, we found the same diverse group of people as always. AND As always when we went to request a song, we were told by the DJ that management requested that he play "No Rap music or no line music"This was very discouraging, especially considering the diversity in the bar. From a business standpoint: Shouldn't ones audience be considered? If I spend money in bar shouldn't I be allowed to listen to whatever music that strikes my fancy? If Rap music and Line music are considered too "urban" for The Well, should my dollars be spent here? With this in mind, I say Farewell to The Well. read more

The Well rocks! Good booze and good times. I agree that during sports nights, it is more of a sports bar, but most nights it is so much more than that. It is a newer bar with an old school feel. The place is long and narrow so it can get a little crowded. This is a nicer bar (with respect to the crowd), which is to say: ladies, you don't have to necessarily worry about being fondled by random guy on the edge of the dance floor. I was in Detroit for the Final 4 weekend and ended up spending my pre-game activities at the Well for both days of games. Staff was attentive, despite the fact that it was so crowded, I never really had to wait long for a drink. The DJ was fun, and the crowd was also really fun. I realize that it was a different type of weekend and it wasn't what it normally is but if I'm ever back in Detroit, I will definitely be back to the Well for a drink. The Well is a neighborhood bar mixed with a dance club. It gets CROWDED and there are very few tables. Unless you get there early, prepare to stand. The dance floor is tiny but no one cares. The crowd is a mix from older to young but I will say it's mostly frat boys/jersey shore wannabes. That is not my usual type of crowd but I've never had an issue with them. Everyone seems pretty nice and no one has ever been mean or judgmental. There are definitely more guys than girls here, so ladies, if you're looking to talk to men, you're in business. The DJ plays standard Top 40 dance songs. Basically if you listen to Channel 95.5, you'll like the music. Drinks are average to cheap. I think a mixed drink is 4 or 5 bucks, beer is around 3 to 4. This is a bar for getting drunk and dancing. It's not a bar for quiet conversation or a low key evening. read more
