I just wanted to say Thank You! A month ago we thought we were going to have to put Peach down because of an accident or a fall. We weren't sure what happened. We called and they got us in immediately for a checkup. All of the staff is so incredibly sweet. After the checkup and some X-rays, the Dr let us know he felt like it wasn't time to put her down and advised us to wait a week and see if there was any improvement. What a day that was! Anyway, he was right, thank goodness! A month later, she's regained almost full function of her back legs and only has a little limp. I can't imagine what would have happened if we took her to the ER, she might not be here with us today. Thank you guys so much for looking out for the wellbeing of Peach and not instantly putting her down because of time constraints or other appointments. Took my small dog in to the vet because she wasn't breathing normally. Gave her to the receptionist, who then put her in a cage until the doctor could see her. The vet called me 45 minutes later and said "she had an incident.". I asked what do you mean? He said, when I came in I said oh shit I think she coded! Then he said I did CPR for 2-3 minutes, but she was long gone before he returned. Then he said she had a massive heart attack. So then I started wondering where was he when she had the heart attack. He doesn't seem to be a very caring doctor when it comes to small animals. Then when I went in to pick up my dogs body, I was greeted by the vets mother who works there. In the past when I have lost and animal or had to have one put down, the vet has talked with me. The vets mother spoke to me, instead of me being able to see the vet. I found this very unprofessional. and there were no patients waiting to see the doctor and I found it unusal for the vet to not come talk with me. read more

My mother took her dog here on 6/2/22 for a routine dental cleaning. The vet did the surgery without insisting on pre-op blood work, then released the dog back to my mom even though it could not stand on its own after anesthesia. That evening, the dog got weaker and weaker, eventually developed an extremely high heart rate, and died. I don't know what this vet learned in vet school, but I am incredulous that they would even offer to do surgery on an older patient without pre-op blood work. I understand the risk of complications can never be zero, but it is terrible medicine to do surgery on a patient you aren't confident won't die from the procedure, especially something as routine as a dental cleaning for an otherwise healthy dog. Furthermore it is extremely irresponsible to release a pet back to its owner after anesthesia when it cannot even stand on its own. They were gracious and refunded the cost of the surgery, but I cannot in good conscious let other pet owners take a risk with a veterinary practice that is so cavalier with surgery without knowing what they are in for. read more

My mom's dog died because of multiple appts with multiple misdiagnoses with this vet. She was so sick and they didn't even run the most basic tests. Human doctor told us to take to another vet and found out how sick she was finally. It was too late. Our vet and SOVSC tried desperately to save her but she died a horrible, painful death because Hogg jr couldn't diagnose the most obvious disease based on symptoms. Diabetes and a bladder full of stones. Poor dog suffered to a point that is unimaginable. The doctor had no bedside manner. He was curt and uncaring. Forced dog to have unnecessary procedures ($$$$teeth cleaning$$$$) while she was so sick and pulled most of her teeth which made her even sicker. Super sad story. Vets that watched her die were not pleased. Totally preventable. We called them to give them an earful. They never even asked the dogs name. Could not have cared less. Take your animal here at your own risk. read more

My dog died because of this vet. She was only 5 years old and they gave her the wrong dosage for her thyroid. They would not listen when I said something was wrong either. She had a seizure and died. read more

It makes me sad that this office went south so quickly after the new vet took over. I've taken my pets and rescues here for years. It was an amazing place of business for so long. They've become money hungry and it's OBVIOUS that the vet is padding his pockets by making unnecessary appointments. I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and have kept going. My last several appointments have been expensive, short, and filled with overly complicated vet lingo that I rolled my eyes at. My last appointment I asked why it takes so many appointments to get an answer and I was told to go elsewhere. So I am. read more

I have been taking my pets here for years. My dog had developed a limp and was avoiding walking on one rear leg for about a month so I made an Appt for her to be checked out. My appt was with James Hogg, DVM. I explained the problem and 2 xrays were taken, without sedation. Dr returned with my dog. After thumbing through a large medical book in front of me, Dr Hogg "decided" that my dog had a cancer in the leg joint; a fast-spreading cancer that he said would metastise to her lungs quickly, killing her within 12 months or less from this visit. I was dumbfounded at this diagnosis and very upset. He was very matter of fact when giving me the devastating news and offered no sympathy or further explanation. I asked how he came to this diagnosis without taking a biopsy. Like a light bulb came on, he replied, "oh, well yes, I can do a biopsy if you want. It will take 7-10 days for test results to be received. I asked if it could possibly be something other than cancer. His reply was, "Well, it could be a bacterial or fungal infection, which could be treated with medication." I had to ask him both these questions. He offered up nothing more initially than the cancer diagnosis. Big difference between a fast metastizing cancer that will swiftly kill my dog and a treatable bacterial/fungal infection. He gave me an information sheet on the cancer he said my dog had, I paid the $250 bill, which I felt was excessive, and left, immediately deciding I wanted to get a 2nd opinion before paying them addl $ for a biopsy. I was dubious to say the least and felt the diagnosis was incorrect, based on my dog's overall health, and the very upsetting AND questionable experience I'd had at Oregon Vet Services. I got home and read the cancer info sheet; the very 1st paragraph said this cancer is normally found in very large breed dogs such as Saint Bernard, Rottweiler, Great Dane...my dog weighs 19 lbs! Since this very bad experience at OREGON Vet Services, I took my dog to another local Veterinary Office/Hospital for initial exam and 2nd opinion. Dr said it was very doubtful my dog had cancer in her rear leg. I was told the only way to determine what is going on in the leg AND position it CORRECTLY is to sedate her. New xrays were taken yesterday, while my dog was sedated, in order to get the proper joint positioning and angles to make a proper diagnosis, which wasn't done at OREGON Vet Svcs. These Xrays revealed she has a torn cranial cruciate ligament and some bone spurs. NO CANCER, NO BACTERIAL OR FUNGAL INFECTION, and she's not going to DIE in the next 12months! I want my $250 returned, and I EMPHATICALLY and HIGHLY DISCOURAGE YOU from EVER taking your pet to Dr James Hogg at OR VET SERVICES in MERLIN OR. He truly does not have a clue what he is doing! read more

I had a terrible experience here. I went in prepared for the possibility of putting my dog down because he has deteriorated so quickly the last 3 weeks or so- no eating, significant weight loss, labored breathing, disorientation, etc. I was doing my best to hold back the tears as I explained to the tech what was going on. Later the vet came in, without the chart, and asked why I was so sad. I thought that was obvious...So, either he didn't read the chart before coming in the room or he did and came into the room with a plan to start pushing for a battery of tests before even seeing my dog in person. I thought that was weird. He hardly even did a physical exam on my dog, he didn't even look in his mouth which is a common source of infection due to bad teeth. During the visit, I was treated with no sympathy and was told there's nothing wrong with him besides an elevated white blood cell count. When I asked why he thought my dog wouldn't eat then, James Hogg said, "Maybe he's full." Really? That's why he hasn't eaten for at least 2 weeks?! I was shocked and knew that he didn't care about my dog or the situation. I was the one who eventually suggested maybe an antibiotic since his WBC count was elevated and he could have an infection. Not sure why the vet didn't suggest we start there, or talk to me about how elevated WBCs can be a sign of cancer. He was just pushing for an X-ray and a "feel good" treatment of vitamin shots, etc. I wasn't going to give this guy any more of my money or time, and I was definitely not going to sign up for some sort of long term treatment regime where I'd have to keep coming back so my dog could get shots. I just felt like he was trying to take advantage of my vulnerability. I was happy to take my sick dog and get out of there. I'd rather he die at home surrounded by people who love him. I just don't want him to suffer. I'll be doing my best to get a second opinion somewhere else, and in the meantime will use my skills as a nurse to take care of my dog myself. I'm giving this place one star only because the vet tech that initially saw us was nice, everyone else was distant and callous, including the front desk staff and other assistants. Otherwise, I wouldn't give any stars for this place. I really can't figure out what was going on but it felt terrible. I'll never go back there. read more

There bed side manner wasn't the best. And didn't like how they didn't really tell me anything

While on an annual camping trip, our dog swallowed a baited fishhook. After trying unsuccessfully to remove the hook ourselves, we drove to the closest veterinary clinic we could find. Oregon Veterinary Services was able to squeeze in our emergency visit and remove the hook. This included x-rays and sedation. The charges were reasonable and fair. They even did a complementary nail trim. Our family is appreciative of the services received. read more

I have taken my fur babies here for over 20 years. I have always had great care for my doggies. Dr. H. Always takes the time to explain the issues . I never feel rushed and my doggies have always liked going there. His staff is great, friendly. Would highly recommend. read more
