Upon walking into the restaurant. I was very surprised at how the decor was as very beautiful. I'm not gonna lie. I was very excited to try this restaurant. Once my meal came out, it all went downhill. I got the general Taos chicken and it was dreadful, the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten in Houston. The chicken and the shrimp were soggy and mushy. General Taos sauce is supposed to be spicy and Tangy. It was neither the sauce was like soy sauce and honey I took one bite of the shrimp and it was 90% batter and 10% mushy shrimp. I'm a bit of a germaphobe and as I frequent restaurants I do a quick cleanliness check. Not on purpose it just happens. I find If the place is unclean then most likely the food is not great and this is another example. Food was just okay. Went with my wife and a friend and the sediment was the same. Just okay. Shrimp rolls -shrimp was chewy. But for me I walked in and noticed immediately the carpet had food on it all over the restaurant and at the base of the tables. We sat down and our table cloth had stains and crumbs on it. My knife and spoon had food stains I had to wipe off. My water cup had black stuff in the cup. The chairs are Wooden and capture food beside the seat cushion. Speaking of cushion mine has crumbs on it I had to dust off. By then my stomach was already preparing for the worst. My sweat and sour dish had black spots on the cup and down the side. The fish tank was cloudy and all the furniture could do with regular cleaning. The ceiling could use some attention. Just too much stuff that turned off my appetite. Hopefully someone spends more time cleaning. read more

Great staff, great food & they give you a ton of food. Well worth the Groupon or without it. The family meal for 2 can feed 5 easily. Everything is fresh & they use chicken breast not thighs which is great & not a lot of breading let's of meat. Definitely recommend. The general tso is sweet, not spicy, I asked for it extra spicy & could see the red pepper flakes but it was still sweet & I love sweet so that was ok. My favorite Chinese restaurant in the area! I've only ever been here for dinner with family, but each time I've been here has been great. When you walk in, you'll see pictures all along the walls of people/famous people who have came and dined. What caught my eye one of the other times I've come in was the former 'most interesting man in the world' in a picture with the owner. So cool!! The dining area itself is pretty cool and has a nice authentic feel to it. I love the decor and the waiters have always been great. They're laid back, attentive, great memories and quick. Portions are large here and I always take home leftovers. Tonight, me & 3 other people did the 'family dinner' - it's $12.95 a person with a minimum of 2 people. So well worth it! I definitely recommend doing this if you're eating with someone else. With the dinner came a soup, appetizer of 2 egg rolls, 2 crab puffs and 2 bbq ribs. By the time I finished the soup, I was too full to even eat half of the appetizers/meal. Food to bring for work tomorrow! read more

Its not an elegant or modern restaurant, but the food its one of the best in miles, totally recommended!!!!

I have patronized this restaurant since I moved to Houston in 1994. When dining in, I have always had a good dining experience with above average dishes. However, I cannot say the same thing for takeout/delivery. Once again, an order scheduled for 45/50 minutes took an hour and a half. But, for once it was not iced cold. Pity though, the aluminum foil dishes were both busted open and spilled into the bottom of the bag, also soaking the spring rolls, all into an inedible mess. The soup survived in it's impossible to breach container. When I called the restaurant, I was offered replacements. But I had neither the inclination or the time to wait another hour and a half for a probable replay. The wait time is annoying, but times are changed for now. I can deal with that. What I cannot deal with is the cavalier execution of placing it in my hands. The restaurant notoriously packs dishes to fail. Maybe it was the Grub Hub driver with no real skin in the game. But that relationship needs to succeed or get out of the delivery business. And as I write this, I believe I am inclined to simply allow the now broken habit of dining in to lapse completely. read more

We have never had bad service or even remotely mediocre food; staff is always welcoming and attentive, food is delicious with large portions. We love this place! It's our family go-to for birthdays, and when guests come into town this is our show-off of our local options. The food was very good. The portions were excellent on the dinner for four. The ribs fell off the bones and were so tender. They also had great flavor. Alan was our waiter and was great. Our drinks never went below half empty. He checked back on us several times to make sure we were doing ok. We have tons of leftovers for lunch for tomorrow. The only thing that I can say I found odd is the lady that sat us down did not like that we wanted to sit at a table for six when we were only a family of four. I loved this restaurant. Had been eating here for over 20 years. Order delivery once a week. But since they switched to grub hub their service is the absolute worst I have ever experienced. Twice now the order is an hour late and finally grub hub comes back after a 15 minute phone call to offer that it be cancelled. Ridiculous. Oriental Garden you had something going. But this is absurd. Ditch grub hub and get back to using your own driver. Still love the food though. read more

It was tasty, but it wasn't spicy at all, even though it had that little pepper symbol next to it on the menu. I would recommend asking them to make it spicy if that's what you like. OGC continues to impress! I placed a to go order yesterday mid afternoon for a 4:45pm pick up. I later called to move the pick up time to almost 5:00pm, so the food would be hot when I got it home. Everything was ready really quick upon my arrival. The food was HOT and packed so perfectly!! Not a drop spilled and a perfect at home dinner. I'm a fan of the courteous waiters, they're very fluent and polite. Their appetizers are a bit pricey, 6 piece crab rangoons for 6.25$, they were huge though. There was about a tablespoon of cream cheese in them, nothing stood out about them besides their size. Very satisfied with their shrimp and scallops lunch special, there is a generous amount of scallops in it. (I didn't expect peanuts in it though but I should have read the description on the regular menu). But their brown sauce is extremely sweet. So sweet that it made my S'bucks caramel frap seem bitter! But their brown sauce is extremely sweet. UPDATE: I went back for the shrimp and scallops in pepper sauce but to my dismay there wasn't nearly as many scallops this time. Inconsistent! Hot and sour soup was bland though. Their wonton soup was ok, I liked that it had some shredded veggies and sliced bbq pork in it. But I was a little grossed out by what was in the wonton... the meat was pinkish purple (cooked though). I liked that I was offered a can of soda twice after I finished my first; I would have expected a more conservative effort to not keep giving away sodas. God I wish I could give them a better rating but unfortunately it has to do a lot with the food. The staff was beyond friendly and informative. I came here for the very first time with my kids after their soccer game, we love Chinese food and we thought this place was like any other hole in the wall we go but that was not the case. To start, Oriental was a little hidden in the strip but we managed to find it, it has hard tinted windows and your average red brick on the outside but once you enter inside...You are in Little China (solemnly going based on one of my favorite movie's decor "Big trouble in Little China"). My kids have been to plenty Chinese places but most now a days are way too modernized and no longer have the typical decor with the over sized fish tank and their meaty... I mean...."pretty" fish (LOL). What I believe the manager noticed how my kids enjoyed the tank so he asked if we would like to be seated by the tank and we appreciated how considerate he was and we did. To start with we ordered the Crab puffs along with their Sweet tea and a water.. Yes Ladies and Gentlemen, this place actually carries Sweet Tea, which is super sweet! For our Lunch, I went with their Lunch Special's Peppered chicken with fried rice, won ton soup and the egg roll that came with the meal. My daughter went with the beef and broccoli, won ton soup, egg roll, and instead of fried rice we asked for their Chicken Lo mein. For my son, (so basic) Chicken nuggets with fries and fried rice. At first EVERYTHING looked so tasty but for me personally, once I tried my own plate, I was not as impressed, even the egg roll was terrible. Maybe my taste buds are too loyal to the other few places we like going to but I was not a fan. My Daughter LOVED everything, she was amazed by the amount of food and loved eating a little bit of everything, It was her first time getting an adult entree. She kept saying how the soup was delicious, the lo mein so tasty that she even shared with her big brother, and let's not even mention the broccoli and beef, she tried to eat as much as she could but being a 5 year old and a beanstalk (pun intended) she could not bear the entire meal. My son did not like his food very much. The nuggets looked more like boudin balls and the fries was all he ate from his plate, if it wasn't for his little sister sharing her plate, he would have been hungry. It was obvious that the clientele is very loyal to Oriental. The staff knew everyone that walked into the establishment and I just adored that.. I wanna be that person they know by name, I wanna be that person whose fave meal is the same every time but then one day I have to ask for the menu since I feel adventurous and then realize that I should stick to my all time favorite. Do not waste your time here. I don't see how this places has 4 Stars, much less how it's even open for business. They forgot a couple items in my order, which is forgivable, stuff happens. Crab Ragoons- they originally forgot it, once I finally got it it was ok. Lettuce Wraps- chicken was too sweet and looked like vomit, forgot to give me LETTUCE Egg Rolls- not good- and is it really an egg roll if it's wrapped in spring roll paper??? Combination Lo Mein- it was actually ok Ribs- were actually good and soft. That's probably the one thing they could get away with not being cooked fresh yet still taste decent. Fried rice- I actually asked for white rice instead I got rice soaked in soy sauce. Not fried not even any egg In there. Fried dumpling and Steamed dumpling- horrible, wrapped in some type of really thick. stiff dough. I ordered veggie and pork. Both tastes like crap. Dumpling sauce was like sugar and soy sauce. General tso chicken/ Chili shrimp- house special called the Phoenix dish. Both items again sweet. I chose spicy- one below very spicy according to the menu options, you look at those pictures and tell me where are the peppers? pepper flakes? Seasoning??? I told them it wasn't spicy at all, they told me (no lie) the way their food is set up is that you don't get any spiciness unless you bit into an actual pepper... wtf??? No refund offered, no remake offered, and I didn't bother to ask. This place will be gone soon if they continue serving horrible mediocre food and leaving the employees to defend it. Poor guys. As much as I wanted to drive by and hurl the food at their front door, we through it in the trash. $65 down the drain we went back out and ate at the Chinese place directly across the street from them. read more

My family has been coming to Oriental Garden since the 90's. We recently celebrated my dad's birthday here in October. The portions are huge, the staff is attentive and kind, and the food is delicious. I am not sure about takeout cause we typically dine in. The atmosphere is cozy too. My absolute favorite is the wonton soup - it is to die for. My second favorite is the honey chicken. Strongly recommend both! Thankful I am able to still enjoy meals here with my family - feels like home. read more
