On a recent visit home, a friend suggested we make a night of going and boy did we have a fun time! Gary's Bar at the same time feels old and unchanged, but modern and welcoming. The only issue some might have, is they allow smoking. We didn't really care: they have a great draft beer menu of almost all local stuff from the area, plus all the national macro brands. Prices are super cheap for how fresh everything is; glassware is also clean. They have a ton of special items too, like drinks, jello shots, etc. Along the back left wall is a bunch of packaged beer for to-go service. On the night we went, there was a genuinely great local band playing. Some people danced. They have a pool table too, which saw constant action. The bartenders were also super welcoming and attentive, despite being busy. If you're a fan of neighborhood dive bars that are secret great, this is worth checking out.

We started talking to the bartender to find out what was good to do besides the typical tourist stuff in the area. She was wonderful with suggestions, telling us about other watering holes in the vicinity and even beyond Gettysburg. We had inquired about LGBT friendly places within a short car ride and were basically told to go to Harrisburg or a small town in Maryland. At that point, that's when things started to get a little weird. After outing ourselves, things got a little uneasy for us. We ended up meeting the owner's grandson. He was great and seconded the suggestions the bartender made. But when he introduced us to the locals at the end of the bar, we kind of wanted to not say much.
