This is by far the neatest brewery I have ever been to. It is located cellar of a historic building. It has so much charm and history. You will feel like you stepped back in time. Service was super fast and my meal came out quick. I had a glass of Fat Cat in Pink Boots, an IPA. It was very good. To eat, I had the Orchard Bird. Very tasty with some awesome stuff. The mix of bacon, Granny Smith apples and BBQ sauce on a pretzel bun made for a very tasty sandwich!! I definitely recommend this restaurant!! read more

I love this brewery/restaurant. The bar area is perfectly British; cozy, dark, welcoming and unassuming. Their beers are all consistently good, I personally like the standard IPA and the Cream Ale. Most of the food is pretty good, though not amazing. Service is great, and even though im no local, my family was treated as though we were. Happy with this stop! In town for a short stay, and looking to try local breweries. This was a pleasant surprise. Great ambiance - old historic house, low lighting, great conversation at the bar. Service is super friendly and fast. The beer was much better than I expected. Classic American IPA, a really good juicy NE IPA, and the Belgian (Triple) is perfect. The food is pub fare, and tasty comfort food. Not high end food, but good and hits the spot. I don't leave a lot of reviews, but wanted everyone to know if you're looking for good beer in the area, stop here for a flight or a pint or two, and a little food. read more

I had wanted to try this place for many years, long ago my parents raved so much about the root beer, and the ambiance. They had sold and were rebought in the meantime and we tried to go a few times between and it never happened until finally recently. It is super cute, tucked away downstairs. We went at the golden hour between lunch and dinner so it wasn't packed, we got to sit in the seat I would have chosen, right by the fireplace. What a fireplace! I wanted to explore and my fingers itched to open the wee door behind my chair. We weren't overly hungry, mainly I wanted to try the root beer. Hubby ordered a flight, and I must say they were all pretty tasty choices. The root beer did not excite me. It tasted too watery and pepperminty for my taste, and I think the odor from the grease trap from the kitchen I smelled, hampered with my taste buds a bit. We ordered a pretzel with spinach dip and it was just meh. Overall, super cute place, I would go again but maybe just for beer only. read more

I've been meaning to visit this place since I first came to area a few years ago. My wife and I were shopping and taking a drive afterwards and finally decided to stop in. There was parking on the street (they have a private parking lot in the rear) as college is out of session. If you park on the street you will have to walk around the back and down some stairs to a patio with outdoor seating, and that is where you will enter. Upon entering you are going into a very early 19th century governors mansion for the county. The space has been brought up to date but still keeps the coziness of a former day. You will be greeted by bartenders who ask you to sit anywhere and give you a few minutes to soak in the atmosphere and review the beer list and also the cocktail list with neighboring farms, cider makers and vineyards. We both ordered the soup of the day made from scratch which was a beer cheese and sausage soup that was more of a broth than what you would consider a soup. It was actually amazingly good. They have a small kitchen (which you can see from the dining room) and keep the meals local and quick. I had the local bbq sandwich and it was moist and delicious. She had the classic and raves about it. As for the beer, this place got on the ground early 1996 to be exact. They were on the cusp of craft brewing. Their brews are solid, but nothing overly hoppy. They do a great job pairing with local vineyards on drinks. My wife had a cocktail that was super refreshing as it was 96 outside. This is a place you can bring a child, they have a bunch of board games and puzzles to play with. But be aware the cell reception is poor as you are in a house from the 1800's. They do have WiFi but I didn't see a password posted. This was a place I can wait to go back to. read more

The Bartender clearly had no time for me as I sat at bar while she joked with a patron and manager (I think). I travel frequently to Selinsgrove and was looking forward to tryinf their craft beer. didn't get the chance as it was clear that they didn't really "need or care for my business.". hopefully their local clients are treated better....don't go if they don't know you. read more

We came in for some light appetizers and drinks, we got the pretzel with Art dip, lentil & sausage soup, and vegan chili. I got the smashing pumpkin cocktail which was probably one of the best seasonal drinks I've ever had. Everything was super flavorful and reasonably priced. We wanted to love it, but it missed on almost every opportunity. Of the home made brews, we had the framboise (way too bitter) the porter (too much coffee flavor) the peach (just meh). These were sampled by all in our large group and the reviews were 100% unfavorable. The mimosa tasted like it was made with a rosé sparkling wine. It was sickeningly sweet. Dropped a few pomegranate seeds in it and called it a pomegranate mimosa. The winner was the gin bramble which was good, not great. The service and food were on par with the whole "we don't need your business" vibe of this establishment. We were chastised by our server a few times. She was visibly uncomfortable with a large group from the jump and didn't know how to talk to us or treat us properly. Sad to say no plate was worth photographing. It's highest positive score was the charm and coziness of the space. There was a nice game wall which offered a nice distraction while we waited. These are the types of reviews that I hate to make. Selin's Grove came highly recommended by friends that live in this area, so I was excited to try before I left the area. I arrived at 1pm on a Friday afternoon, there was both indoor and outdoor seating available and while today was warm and humidity low, I wanted the chilly A/C on the inside (one star). I walk in, there is no one in front of me, 3 people at the bar, one visible waitress and no one at the host(ess) stand. There was a sign that read to wait until the party ahead of you has been seated and to peruse the menu while I waited. When I entered, no greeted me even though both the bartender and waitress saw me (- one star). The waitress walked by me without acknowledgement (- one star) and headed to her table(s) out doors. I was able to stand there, read both the food and beer menu in their entirety, twice...and for a brewery rolling into the weekend, they were out of half their on tap selections, but I digress. I stood there for 4 minutes, no acknowledgement from staff (- two stars) so I decided to take my business elsewhere. As I left, the waitress that ignored me on the way out did so on the way back in. I am out of stars to take away since Yelp does not allow 0 ratings or half stars. I will not make an attempt to come back but hope the management reads this and takes it as constructive criticism and turns it into a positive. read more

This is the 2nd time I have patronized this establishment. The Selen's Grove Brewing Company has a very intimate atmosphere reminiscent of a tavern from the late 1700s. The first time I was here the entrees were very good, but my only disappointment this time is that they only had sandwiches to offer, not even burgers. Aside from that, the beers are good, the service is decent and the staff is friendly. I would highly recommend visiting here if you are passing though on 11/15 after a weekend in northern PA or whatever. read more

Came here for late dinner. Was a recommendation from one of SU college students as it's on Main Street and very quick drive there. Entrance is as described by others - down the stairs and around - basically the basement. It is an absolutely charming replica of an old English pub. You sit yourself at tables that have menus already strewn on it. Our waitress was the barmaid who greeted us in a timely manner and was friendly and focused on us - never making us feel rushed. It is a cozy place and we sat ourselves next to the fireplace. It is darker like people have said but it is all part of that warm and cozy ambience. We shared their nachos for appetizer - OMG fresh and delish!!! Blue and yellow corn nachos so Thur def inject the healthier ingredients in their dishes. Our mains were the Governor and the Barnyard. Governor is roast beef based but I found it dry. Was still delish and abundant mixed greens in it. The Barnyard was sooo good - chicken and pork sandwich with some kind of special mustard. Yumm!! Enjoyed a generous glass of their hard cider which was so flavorful and smooth. Glug glug lol. Overall if you're looking for a great local charming place with excellent prices (that a college kid can afford ) this should be on your list. We came here last year over Christmas holiday and looked forward to visiting again. The pub is very old English feel. Smaller bar that is super cozy. Tables in the bar area and a larger dining area on the other side of the wall are all rustic and delightful. The beer selection is incredible! They even have root beer on tap that is an amazing splash across your tongue! Loved every single sip of it! I had a chance to sample lots of the beer last year and it is delicious! The daily specials were just as mouthwatering this year as last. We really enjoyed every single bite. The standard menu is hearty and I'd love to have the time to come back and try so much of it. If we lived closer I think this would be a monthly dinner spot. Good patio space, a funky piano out front that everyone is welcome to play. The bartender and servers were great. I thought the Selinsgrove Brewery was pretty nice. After reading Amy G's reviewIdecided to go for myself. My original plan was to visit the Selinsgrove Speedway on a friday afternoon, but that didnt materialize. We finally made it up though. The food was pretty good, I had some samples of the beer, and a growler (4.00) of rootbeer (6.00). We also had spicy beef stew which was the weekly special, for about 6.00. The beers they had on tap were: Wilder's Hefe Weizen, Kriek, Captain Selin's Cream Ale, Summertime IPA, McNabbs Scottish Ale, Shade Mountain Oatmeal stout & White Horse Porter. It isfairly easy to find, just look for the destinctive sign, they have a nice patio and garden as you walk in. I also liked the fact that they had a shelf with games & books to keep our daughter happy. They also have merchandise for sale (shirts, hats, etc) Closed monday & tuesdays. I've eaten here many, many times and it has never been anything but great. Every week they have a soup, entree, and dessert special. Their humus plate appetizer is nice because they often have an interesting twist on the typical humus. They have great sandwich combinations and I've never had a bad one. They also have a significant amount of vegetarian and organic items on the menu. I like meat so I like the Hokey Pokey: ham and a blend of artichokes, spinach, onions and soft cheeses on organic sourdough with lettuce. If you're lucky enough to have space for dessert, make sure you also have some of their organic coffee on the side. It is really good. However, my favorite reason to come here is the beer. It is the best micro brew I have ever had. EVER. They always have something interesting on tap along with their standard brews. I like all their beers - even if I'm not a fan of a particular style. I can not say that about any other brew pub I have visited. They also do organic beers and root beer. My favorites are their fruit beers. They are incredible. I fell in love with their blueberry, I wasn't disappointed with their raspberry, and their kriek was also a standout. It was noisy but a good noisy, the loud talking hustle and bustle of a London Pub, or colonial Pennsylvania rather judging by the building and decor. My wife and I sat at a little table aside the bar enjoying our charcuterie slate and local beers, we continued to inch closer to each other in order to talk over the friends discussing their week. I ordered "The Classic" pastrami and rye and she the Chipotle Wrap both exceeded expectations and left us more than satisfied. The ManBeast and I stumbled upon Selin's Grove Brewing while taking the off-highway route back to Pittsburgh from NYC. We were positively charmed by this quirky gem -- starting with the rainbow-colored "OPEN" flag out on the street, down the stone steps, and into the half-timbered taproom stuffed with warm wooden booths, a cozy bar, the nearly-obligatory slate chalkboard beer menu, and delightful historic tchotchkes. (Really, who *doesn't* love historic tchotchkes?!) We both sampled a beer -- an IPA for me, stout for the ManBeast -- but limited ourselves to just the one, as we were on the road. Overall, the beer was excellent. I certainly wish we lived closer so we'd have more opportunity to sample. I was impressed by the variety of food offerings but we only tried the daily charcuterie board. A lively mix of locally-sourced meats with some tasty chutneys and house-made pickled veg. This seems to be the hipster combo du jour, but we aren't complaining -- nothing better than meat and pickles with a shmear of condiment to help that beer go down! What makes this place extra-special is the setting. By far, one of my most favouritest brewery locations -- and believe you me, we've visited more than our fair share. Absolutely fabulous place! Comfy, cozy, warm and rustic, a selection of board games, and quite a fetching portrait of Selin hanging over the barroom fireplace. Top notch food and drink. My good friend Phil and I came in on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was quaint and lively. Our waitress Seenna was very good. Her second night there and she handled herself like she'd been working there for weeks. We both got sandwiches and potato salad. I used to work at a BBQ restaurant for many years and am particular when it comes to potato salad and theirs was very good. The bread was a marbled rye and the cuts of meat were delicious. The beers were first class and I ordered 8 oz beers to sample the varying styles. I was impressed with APA. I'll come back when I come back through here and will request Keenna as my server. I've been here a couple of times and always really enjoy it. Their beer is always good and they have a big variety. I also like that they do samples a la cart so you don't have to force yourself to try beer that you don't want just to fill a flight. This is one of the only places I have ever taken a growler home. The Kriek is my favorite, but I had a Chocolate Raspberry Porter on Sunday that was amazing. Their food is good also. Tried the cheddar ale soup and half sandwich - we were expecting a creamy cheesy bowl of goodness - what we got was a watery vegetable broth with a grainy base of maybe cauliflower - the sandwiches were okay - maybe it was an off day - maybe our expectations were too high. I have a confession to make....and I'm terribly embarassed to admit this... Prior to college I had lived in Selinsgrove my whole life and yet somehow surpassed twenty-some years without knowing about this place. For the past year or two I started to notice that my high school friends were talking about this wonderful little brewery and still I had not taken the opportunity to dine here until this past Christmas vacation while I was home visiting. The Good: Food is great! I had the soup of the day which happened to be a cheddar beer soup accompanied by toasted pita bread and I cannot get this soup out of my head. It was so simple yet delicious and perfect for the weather and sentiment of the Day After Christmas. In addition I had a sandwich (I can't remember the name) and it had a spicy sauce and came on a yummy pretzel bun. I traded half of mine with my friend who also had a yummy sandwich with roast beef and a variety of meats. Both were delicious. As a beer connoisseur and a lover of microbreweries, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the brews here. I tried the cream ale which was decent, the framboise which was good but too sweet for my tastes (I'm not a huge framboise fan to begin with) and the Belgian triple which was awesome. I would definitely like to try all of the beers next time I come back. The Bad: Service was AWFUL! My friend and I sat without menus for a good 15 min and just as we were contemplating if we should leave or not, the waitress finally came over. Later on, two more friends joined us and they also sat without menus for 15 min or so. After she finally acknowledged them and took their orders, she forgot to bring out the soup that my friend ordered. Getting the check and getting her to clear our plates was another waiting game. I know she seemed busy and I also know that in a local establishment at a tiny ho-hum town like Selinsgrove, customer service is not typically top-notch. However, I've worked in restaurants for 10 plus years and it has made me a stickler for good service. It was really hard for me to designate a star rating and I wish I could give a 3.5 but because service was soooo slow and menu options are mediocre, I think a 3 is appropriate. read more

This is more than just an oasis in the central PA desert, as it is brilliant on its own terms. An I'd-take-to-a-desert-island tavern. And it is very much a tavern -- as in, 19th Century feel -- but given the building and the artisanal beer, the atmosphere isn't silly or affected at all. The beer is outrageously good. I can't get past the mix of Kriek and Flanders Red I had recently. The menu knows itself, with food that is straightforward and very good for that. BLT on a pretzel roll nails that salty, fresh, buttery combination. Cowboy sandwich has a great warm kick. The potato salad perfectly combines the creaminess of mayo with the bite of mustard. To be honest, I haven't moved past those two sandwiches, as the focus is the beer and I'm a committer once I find something I like. With apologies to natives, it's hard not to (a) wonder why this place is here and (b) get on one's knees and thank the Parcae that it is. When I have left the area for good, my life here will improve in my memory because I will think of Selins Grove. read more

I really enjoyed the pumpkin ale that recently went on tap and the portions were ample as well as the hummus tasted fresh with nice lemon flavor. Named for Capt Selin, and the town's original name, the pub occupies the lowest floor of the home of one of PA's first governors, Samuel Snyder. There are typically 8-12 brews on tap (usually including root beer), and one or two cask brews. This is fresh, tasty beer! Typical offerings include Scotch and IP Ales, Stouts, Porters and Belgian-style brews. The menu is mostly sandwich and salad fare -- on the healthy side. No grill or fryer because of a very small kitchen. There is a daily special which is often heartier than other items and worth getting, if its not sold out. But the beer is why you're here.
