If you like a drink that's stiffer than the two-day-old hot dog that got on the countertop ferris wheel and forgot to get off, then this bar is for you and the cough medicine high you rode in on. If you're feeling brave, try the hot dogs. If you're feeling braver, try the women. If you want a blender drink, try shutting ignorant noise hole. You can sidle up to the bar and select something from the "rotating" daily curation of liquor and beer, or begin with a step out the back door and a peek down the famed Conjugal Alley which runs behind the building--you might catch a show! If you like smoked meats and smoked clothing, bring them in fresh and they'll be smoked to perfection in about 20 minutes! Enjoying a drink at the bar, a patron might overhear some wayfaring, well-to-do tourists who have wandered in describe it as " a punch in the face without the upside" or "a waking fever dream," while non-tippling neighbors just call it "that god d$%n bar on the corner." As one delighted out-of-towner once said, "This ain't no Applebees, these bartenders got sass!" Lived on W James, so a quick stumble to and fro. Was a sanctuary from the wearies of the world. Coming from a blue collar steel town, frats were a bit much, classes were fair, but fellow students were mixed. Somehow, a ragged band of idiots decided that we needed a place reeking of cheap beer and dubious decisions. That is what we found and will be forever grateful. read more

I can appreciate divey smokey and cheap specials just be aware what time of year (college kids)and time of night (midnight to last call) you go it gets way too packed single bathroom very intoxicated unbreathable it is best to go and appreciate this place on its off hours. Probably the only bar I've ever seen that's open at 6:30 am. The crowd is always mixed but it will always feel like home to me. Nothing like superfreaks and woo woos in the afternoon... I am a Lancaster native who is home visiting my friends and family Tennessee. We attempted to go to Hildys to get a drink but the dark haired female bartender took one look at my temporary ID and told me that my ID was fake and she couldn't serve me. She told me not to get mad at her that it was her job. Then another male employee started chiming in telling me it is her job, not even giving me an opportunity to ask for a manager. I explained to her that I know the laws in PA about liquor and as long as it's a valid picture ID you can drink if you're of age. AS A BARTENDER, I am appalled at her inability to recognize government issues IDs. TN gives temporary paper ID, they scan, they have pictures, dates, every EDUCATED bartender knows this. I won't be back and I suggest educating your bartender on the difference between real and fake IDs. read more

Hildys is your typical frat dive bar. You are guaranteed to run into F&M students at this watering hole. Which isn't bad if you're looking for a few coeds to boost your pregame. PREGAME. Do not make Hildys the main event. The bar is pretty standard fare. It has a jukebox and dartboard in the back. Beer selection is pretty standard: straight domestics (pabst, miller lite, high life). I wouldnt ask about food because there really isnt any. Although I've seen a hotdog machine behind the bar (never saw hotdogs on it though). Best part about this place is that everyone is pretty laid back and conversations with strangers isn't uncommon. If you're looking for a few cuties and a mug that won't blow out your wallet Hildys is the place to be. read more

It's good at being what it is, a place to grab a drink at after work, or to begin a night out. Not a place to spend the night at, but the staff is friendly and the drinks are inexpensive. Don't expect any unusual/great beers though, their selection is confined to the better known ones. read more

Hildys is the typical "best dive bar ever" that's enjoyable for all patrons. The bartenders know everyone which contributes to the overall family vibe.
