Great food at bargain prices. Locals go there and I hope it doesn't get too crowded with tourists.

We see this place is busy when we drive by but, it was just ok. You order up front at a counter, take a seat, they bring your drinks and food to your table. I ordered 1/2 rack of baby back ribs with coleslaw and potato salad. The ribs were dry for my taste, but there was enough to fill me up. The cole slaw and potato salad were tasty. She had the special brisket reuben with potato salad. The sandwich was a bit greasy and she also liked the potato salad. The lemonade and soft drinks are quite large in size. The people who worked here were friendly. Perhaps we may try them again. read more

I have liked Ben's in the past but about a month ago I took some friends there for dinner. We tried to order the ribs but the were out. So, I got a hamburger and Cole slaw. Hamburg was so so. My friends got the beef brisket. Previously, the Cole slaw was good. But the owners decided to change the recipe. Big mistake !!! Now it is coarse with long strands and the dressing is TASTELESS. Very disappointed. Don't know if I will return. I called the next day and registered my opinion but I am sure it doesn't matter. read more

My food was not ready after I got a text saying it was! (Gave it to the wrong person). No big deal but after waiting for my order AGAIN, not only did I NOT get a small discount, but they ask if I wanted to give them a TIP! I almost laughed at them. I got home and the food was as bad as the service! BBQ sandwiches tasted like salt! I couldn't eat mine! The potato skins were fairly good,but I got no sour cream. Instead I got 2 ranch dressings. Not many BBQ joints that serve brisket in pork-obsessed Alabama, so that's a good reason to stop in at Ben's Jr. It's an old school BBQ joint complete with the wood paneling. Order at the front, but full service once you sit down. The meats are flavorful and good, maybe not as smoky as I'd like. The turkey stole the show on this plate. The sides really enhance the meal. This little gem never showed up in our searches, so we didn't know OBJ existed until we were driving by on our way to the sushi restaurant down the road. We turned around and how great of a decision that was. The brisket, the cider-collards, beans, Mac and cheese, brisket sauce, were all excellent. We weren't really fans of the white sauce but that is okay. We are also not obsessed with pulled pork like most Alabamans. Give Ben's a shot next time you are needing a BBQ fix. read more

We visited Ben's 5/4/26 for the first time and placed a to-go order. Pulled pork sandwich and sliced brisket sandwich with onion rings and coleslaw. Half our meal was delicious - the pulled pork was moist and they piled it high on a toasted bun. Both sides were fresh and delicious; the onion rings were hot & crispy and some of the best we've had. The coleslaw was cold and creamy. The sliced brisket was a different story; all the beef was dry and about half of it was burned to a crisp and literally crunchy. Did they intentionally give the inferior brisket to a to-go customer because they are not likely to go to the trouble of making the trip back to their restaurant to get a better sandwich or a refund? Whatever the reason, our experience at Ben's was a big disappointment; we expect all the food we paid for to be edible and don't appreciate being served inferior food. If we ever go to Ben's again, we'll eat our meal at the restaurant where we can return food that does not live up to the good reviews we have read. read more

Don't skip out on this legit bbq joint when visiting Fairhope. Their bbq and sides have stuck around for years for a reason, you can tell. We really enjoyed everything we ordered...the turkey grilled cheese with the warm tomato and perfect ratio of melty cheese to turkey, the moist dry rub wings with great flavor, and you CANNOT go here without ordering their collard greens. They're so vinegary and delicious that I drank the pot liquor of the greens from the bowl (it's a southern thing). Good place for some no frills bbq. read more

This is a generous three stars. In a vaccuum the place is decent. Yes, it is a decent chopped beef brisket sandwich and good loaded potato skins. But then you consider that they ask for a tip for counter service and it's kind of downhill from there. The "large" brisket sandwich is about half the size of a large at Buc-ee's, which is just as good in terms of bbq sandwich quality. And it seems the pricing is a good bit more than Buc-ee's, where I can find lots of other stuff including a large and clean bathroom and plenty of desert options. I'm a long time fan of Ben's. I started dining at the Original Ben's on the causeway in the 60's and now have enjoyed Original Ben's Jr. for many years. So excited to dine here today after the reopening. I enjoyed lunch today with a group of girlfriends. One friend and I enjoyed our usual order of each having a small pulled pork sandwich and then splitting the awesome loaded potato skins. Just as delicious as I remembered. The cheesy potato skins come topped with bacon and green onions along with a container of sour cream and Ben's house made ranch dressing. The pulled pork sandwich came with a side of barbecue sauce. Sweet tea in a quart jar was enjoyed as well as Diet Coke. So nice to see the size of the dining room has enlarged and outside dining has been added. Welcome back Ben's!! read more

Food is not fancy but the pulled pork is very good. Portion sizes are good. You have a choice for a larger sandwich. Ambiance is just basic, looks pieced together, worn & tired looking. Not a place to linger over your meal. read more

I used to drive by this place growing up and can never remember the reason we never ate here, but this staff must be different from what they had 10 years ago because they've really turned this place into one of the best if not the best BBQ in the 251. Ecstatic to hear Ben's was reopening, I hadn't been there since the mid 90's when I lived in Fairhope. I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries as I always did as a kid. Other than burgers looking a lot bigger when I was younger, this place did not disappoint. Tasted just as awesome as I remember. Everyone there was very nice. Servers brought out the drinks I ordered at the counter before I realized I might have forgotten to pick up my drink so all was good. Really bad parking/access for wheelchair users. Inside smells awful! Smells like old grease. Yuck. The furnishings are old and uncomfortable booths. The floors are raw concrete and not at all clean. I know they are going for a certain theme with the walls, floors and decor, but it comes off not clean - and stinky. Good was good. I won't go back. read more

I got very excited when Bens was announcing their comeback... thinking I would be able to get their bbq pork sandwich's and huge burgers like back in the early 90's.. unfortunately, this wasn't the case. My parents had already warned me tht it wasn't as good as before but I had to try anyway. The person working the ordering station was friend and personable. Ordering was easy I got the brisket plate and two sides collards and Mac & cheese. The food came out and was a terrible disappointment. Most of the brisket appeared to be overcooked to the point of burned. It was tough and inedible. The collards had a strong vinegar taste and the Mac & cheese looked and tasted like it was right out of the box. No one followed up to ask if the food was satisfactory . Wife and I have dined here several times. Food is usually flavorful and you can taste the smoke, which I like because I'm still trying to master the art with my own smoker. Today, mine and wife's meals were tasty but everything except the beans was over seasoned with pepper. Won't deter us from visiting again. Back of throat and sinuses are now clear. read more
