Super old school and straight forward. Our family of four were returning from our Indianapolis-Cincinnati road trip and made a pit stop here for a quick snack before continuing to Chicago. For those traveling with young children, it is good to note that there is a very nice park and playground minutes away. My daughter as I stopped here to get a treat. I wanted a regular size butterfinger, but even though the flavor was written in their white board, they didn't have it, so I went with strawberry. My daughter got a large vanilla. Serving amount was nice, seems proportionate to what we expected. I do not recommend the strawberry if this is what they think strawberry tastes like. Made me think of bubblicious bubble gum, not strawberry. Not even candy flavored as strawberry. I didn't like it at all. My daughter thought the vanilla was fine and liked how creamy it was. Overall not someplace I would go to again unless I was starving during an event at the stadium across the street. read more

We wanted a cool treat after spending the morning outside. We were the 3rd car in the drive-thru which I guess meant 23 minutes to get custard. Went by their drive through on a Saturday afternoon. Pretty decent line of cars, perhaps waited around 5-10 minutes to put our order in and get our custard, so not too bad. Employees had face coverings on (much appreciated!). I tried their soggy bottom, which is basically vanilla custard, with peanut butter sauce and crushed oreos at the bottom. Portions are big. Prices are very reasonable. There was plenty of peanut butter on there (maybe a little too much?) and not enough oreos :( but the flavors were good. They use the environmentally hazardous styrofoam type dishes which was really disappointing to see. Overall, a pretty average experience. read more

To the contrary, the young woman who served me was completely bereft of even the simplest problem solving skills, such as discovering a way to serve two different flavors in the same bowl. I swear I'm not exaggerating. I kindly asked for one scoop of vanilla and one scoop of pistachio. You get the idea, one staple one exotic. The joy destroyer on the other side of the wall replies, "we can't put two flavors together, has to be one." Naturally, I asked why on earth not? "It makes a mess. You either get vanilla in the pistachio or pistachio in the vanilla." This was a stunning response and, if I'm being honest, so bizarre it became hilarious. I laughed. "But...you could rinse the scooper or use different scoopers?" The incurious brat just repeats the policy back at me. I look at others around us to see if anyone shared in my amazement. None did. I guess they were resigned to Frozen Custard's insane, illogical eastern bloc rules. I shook my head and quietly picked pistachio. The pistachio custard was garbage, by the way. Not that it mattered, my enthusiasm had already been dismembered and laid bare for all Frozen Custard staff to feast on. Still, it's an important postscript because their ice cream or custard or whatever they call it used to be absolutely delicious. Smooth like butter and flavored perfectly. Not this time. Should you go? Yeah, probably. It is the original after all. Just make sure to leave your creativity and lust for life at home. And don't pick the pistachio. read more

I am so disappointed right now I don't even know where to start. The Frozen Custard is iconic in Lafayette. I have been going there my whole life, the ice cream is great, but whoever owns it now should be ashamed. In the last four visits I have made there, I have been told they don't sell quarts or pints anymore of ice cream, and the young lady told me " I THINK we still sell pints but we don't have any containers right now." Ironically, the same thing I was told last week, and the week before. There are no "daily specials" anymore, the staff looks like they just rolled out of bed wearing whatever they want to work, they are untrained, uninformed, and sadly left to answer questions about why The Igloo is kicking your butts. Whoever owns it, either pay attention to your business and get your act together, or sell it? Give me a number and 10 days and I'll have an offer for you. Really bad and really disappointing. The two stoners who were working there the day we went didn't know anything, took forever despite the sparse crowd, and just looked like they couldn't be bothered. And then the milkshake I got (mint) was just about the worst I've ever had. It's as if they ran out of mint ice-cream, and decided to substitute by just using toothpaste as a flavoring. I love coming here with the family. We are regulars. We are here about everyday. We nirmally stop for a soda atleast and they are So nice very attentive. Blake is awesome always has my soda ready. The menu is hard to read. The customer service is poor. The employees are not knowledgeable or unwilling to help their fellow employee with answers about the products they are serving. The custard is not the same. The cones were melting, dripping before being served with no napkins. Asked for napkins! Both hands covered in custard! Over the past decades I have never experienced this. The melting was worse than I have ever seen. Messes were all over the cement from previous customers melted cones etc. No one was cleaning up! I visited Original Frozen Custard for the first time this weekend after the Purdue football game got rained out. I love the old fashioned vibe, the huge portions, and the variety of menu options! And, on a rainy day like it was, the drive-through was fantastic. My husband and I tried the Black & Gold sundae, and it was tasty! Peanut butter, hot fudge, peanuts and vanilla custard. My toddler tried a simple twist of custard. If you're a first-timer like me keep in mind that custard is dense and very filling! While driving to our Airbnb, I saw a huge Frozen Custard sign. My family and I have never had frozen custard before, so I was super excited. There are only a few things I really enjoy, food, Subarus, and ice cream. I figured I would get donuts, today and frozen custard tomorrow, but I couldn't find the donut place... so frozen custard it is. We got there and were greeted by a really nice girl and she was patient while my kids chose what they were going to eat. The small was large enough for an adult, and the toppings were also plentiful. I loved the frozen custard, I got the birthday cake flavor, and it was sooooooooo creamy. Also, the hot fudge was awesome; yes, awesome... overwhelming, impressive, marked by awe. read more

Poor service, poor selection, poor quality :( We were visiting from out of town and friend recommended going here. We parked and walked up to the window because we knew it would take awhile to decide what to get. The menu at the walk-up window listed the sizes and the flavors. It didn't list any sundaes or toppings or anything. The girl at the counter was rude. We asked if they had sundaes or toppings and (in an irritated tone) she said, "Yeah". I asked what they were. She rattled of topping choices while looking in a different direction. I asked for a scoop of watermelon and a scoop of pineapple and she said, "no. you can only have 1 kind." So, I got nothing. My daughter ordered vanilla with cookie dough topping. After we paid, she told us there was no cookie dough topping. So she got 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream (SO boring...). The vanilla had no flavor (we have Ritters custard and Culvers custard where we live and this was definitely much worse than either of those). The scoops were so small, it looked like they used cookie scoops rather than ice cream scoops. We ended up just throwing away her icecream. On a happier note, the mall had a Hawaiian food booth with Dole Whip and shaved ice with TONS of flavor toppings! The dole whip was delicious! Very disappointing service. Ordered 5 dishes. Had to ask for a spoon on every single one, which is kept behind the counter because plastic spoons are a hot commodity apparently. Had to ask for napkins multiple times, because once again, those must be a hot commodity and are kept behind the counter. The birthday cake tastes like food coloring, but came out gray so I suppose that's not overly surprising, and I cannot fault the restaurant on the flavor, just an fyi if you were debating that flavor. They also forgot a dish and we watched several people get served after us before we had to ask them to make it, again. Now for the icing on this cake: my oldest daughter ordered a regular cookies and cream, which is $4 of ice cream, which you can see in the picture is absolutely pathetic. I have driven past this place before and it had always been one of "those places" I meant to stop at. Well, today was that day and I am kicking myself for not stopping sooner. I decided to drop off my diet for one day because I had a hankering for an ice cream cone, and I didn't get one. But we'll get to that in a minute. My wife and I both ordered burgers, fries and a Coke. What should have tipped me off was that we spent $19 for it. We could have shared one and been satisfied. The burgers were big. The fries were crunchy and huge (quantity that is). The Coke was Coke but again, I am kicking myself there too. The burgers were well prepared and very flavorful, made to order not precooked or warmed up. They even tell you it will be about 8 minutes to prepare it for you. The bun, OMG! The bun tasted wonderful and was buttered and grilled to boot. I read later that the meat comes from a local butcher fresh. They served it with 3/8" breaded fries that were cooked to perfection. They were golden brown and were not greasy. I learned later that I could have added flavors from lemon, lime, cherry and vanilla to the more exotic chocolate, marshmallow and something called tiger blood to my Coke for no extra charge. I made a mistake not asking or taking the time to read the menu first. Now on to the frozen dessert. I wanted ice cream. They serve real, homemade frozen custard. Their regular flavors are vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Today they added creamsicle, cherry, mountain berry and what I got, cream whiskey. It was love at first lick. They warn you that it melts faster than ice cream and they are not lying. It was cold to keep it frozen but you can tell it has higher fat because of the way it feels on your tongue. They are open 7 days a week, grill closed on Sunday, from March 1 to October 31. Go there. You will not be disappointed. read more

Pros: drive-thru Cons: -have to pay $1.50 for an ice water (right from the tap) -No prices on the menu -"custard" tastes like fluffed up Dairy Queen ice cream... The Original Frozen Custard is a summer staple around for many people. I just got my first visit out of the way. It's still pretty cold out so they weren't very busy, which meant no wait for us. The guy who took our order was super friendly and helpful. I got a small strawberry sundae and a jumbo Coke (they have the best Coke around in my opinion), and my friends got a regular size twist and a large blue moon (if you've never had Blue Moon frozen custard, I definitely recommend giving it a try...From what I've read no one really knows exactly what the flavor but it's definitely a unique flavor...And it's blue, who doesn't like blue?). Everything was great. If you've never been, give it a try. All the Frozen Custard flavors are great, their Fruit Drink is a really popular item as well..And you can get drinks with a wide range of flavors. read more

Apparently, I missed out on this institution, while I was a student at Purdue. I finally came here with my bf and his family to try it. I had the "vanilla in a cone." It was creamy and smooth, but still lacked some of the flavor and texture that comes with a rich frozen custard. I might just have to do a side-by-side comparison with my other favorites. Though, it is nice that they offer other flavors besides vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and twist everyday. It took me awhile to decide between vanilla and birthday cake. read more

I've been going here since I was a little kid and this is the best custard I've ever eaten anywhere. The price is a little more than it was in the 1950's, but it's still the same great product. In my opinion the best flavors are the plain vanilla and the chocolate, available in a cone or a dish. While they are making new flavors - always good to try something new - you can never go wrong with chocolate and vanilla. If you have a little time sit under the awning and enjoy your treat, then maybe walk on over to the Columbian Park Zoo and see what you can see. read more

My wife's family is from this area, and she used to love coming here as a kid. So when we were in the area visiting, we made it a point to introduce our kids to the original Frozen Custard. Unfortunately, I was not very impressed. I recognize that this place is a Lafayette tradition, but I thought Culver's frozen custard was better (we tried FC one night and Culver's the next). I like my custard to be cold, smooth and creamy, and what I got was a chocolate/vanilla twist cone that was melting as they put the custard on the cone, and custard that more whipped than creamy.
