Those who don't know are missing out. The Original Pancake House is the best pancake house there is. Yes it is a smaller chain (hard to call this a chain in all honesty) and that's amazing because you can get to it in different states. If I see a Original Pancake House I tend to always visit because it's that good! The Madison location is no different! It's very good and worth going too! Dutch baby, 49ers, speciality pancakes, the Apple pancake (if you want desert for breakfast and breakfast for desert) are all amazing options. To be honest, I dare you try their standard pancakes and tell me it's not better than the other breakfast places out there. I would also argue that out of all the best breakfast and brunch places in the world that original pancake house still has them beat when it comes to the variety and tastiness of their pancake offerings. There is so much effort that goes into this master offering of pancakes and it pains and worries me that when I mention this place more people have either never heard or haven't made an effort to go to. They truly do not know what they see missing out on! If your in the fence or don't believe pancakes can be elevated beyond what you grew up on make sure you try. I highly doubt you will be disappointed and at the very least can tell you it puts other chains to same. read more

Definitely one of Madison west side's best kept secret. The food is excellent, comes in huge portions, and the price is unbeatable for value. If you go on weekends, expect to wait because it's everyone's go-to. BUT, OPH has their system down to a T because they're so efficient and quick with turning tables around without rushing their customers. The wild goose chase to get here was worth it. I had no idea where we were or how we got here. It's a very old building and parking lot and the interior is dated. You'll soon forget all that. There are 2 sections and I prefer the back. It's cozier. I got the combo and I should have gotten the senior plate. The cakes are so generous. I ordered an OE egg that comes with it and it was perfect, unlike most places. Of all the ones I've been to this one has the best omelets, loaded with cheese and I'm taking quite a few bites of Basil's omelet. It also has the best OJ that I usually don't bother with cause I'm disappointed. I took a gamble and got the sweetest, coldest juice I ever had. I have met friends here now on three or four occasions. The food is tasty, they have ample seating and various styles of seating. they offer an extensive menu of pancakes, waffles, and omelets. They were very good about bringing fresh coffee. Very good. I ordered two eggs over easy gluten-free pecan pancakes, two slices of bacon & hash browns. The servings are large no need to worry about your next meal. The hashbrowns are always cooked in a dome shape, the inside is never crispy this is reserved for the outside of the hash brown pile. Cooked perfectly and everything is from scratch. I had 49ers, an apple pancake, and the buttermilk pancakes. My party also ordered the breakfast burrito and it came with an amazing house salsa. Fresh ingredients plus service that was polite and prompt made for a wonderful visit. The place was packed and we had to park down the street. Well worth the wait. Went here today after a prolinged absence from normalcy. This has been one of my favorite places for breakfast. Usually there is a wait for a table today I was apble to get a seat at the counter right away. Everyone was hustling. They have every other table open and some really nice outdoor seating. While they are working diligently with the in person diners, they were also managing a huge number of take out orders. Everything I love about this restaurant was still present. Oh my pancake. This restaurant is an old school diner that has the most scrumptious breakfast options. The food is delicious and cooked fresh. Trust me, you can tell. My favorite was the homemade whip cream. So hard to find that kind of care in breakfast food today. I enjoyed the freshly cut up strawberries on top of my pancakes. My only critique is that whenever I go here the place is extremely busy and makes parking an absolute nightmare. The business also only accepts cash which can be a pain, but they do have an ATM. We were extremely impressed with the speed of service, hot food, and great customer service. It also was much less dated on the inside than we were expecting, which was welcomed! We felt that the prices were just right and everything on the menu sounded fantastic - soo many things to choose from. We will have to go back! My only critique is that I ordered the potato pancakes, and they were pretty flavorless. They had a crispy outside and were done perfect. Great texture, too. I tried the dutch delight and loved the different texture of a baked pancake! I don't like regular pancakes because they get soggy but this was crunchy on the top and soft in the bottom. Another fabulous breakfast at OPH this morning! Fresh peaches were in season and we took advantage. I had crepes with whipped cream and my hubby had pancakes with whipped cream - both topped with the fresh peaches and their homemade raspberry syrup! OMG what a treat! I have crepes 2 out of 3 times we have eaten there and they are always done to perfection. My husband is partial to their pancakes and waffles - again, always done perfectly. Their omelets are great as well. We eat there at least once per month and can honestly say we have never had a bad meal. The staff are friendly and accommodating . The Apple Pancake is phenomenal and can be breakfast for at-least three days. The Apple waffle is a solid choice as well and the Apple syrup served with is a delight. I am glad we picked this restaurant to eat at! We got to the restaurant around 11am, and had a small wait. Per other reviews sounds like the wait can get long, so we must have gotten lucky. We were seated and asked by the hostess what we would like for drinks. I like that they were quick with service for how busy they were. The menu was large with I don't recall how many different types of pancakes they offer, but it was A LOT. All of them had me drooling and it was hard to pick just one. I was also impressed with the large kids menu for picky eaters. I ordered their apple pancakes which said takes longer. What arrived was HUGE and not at all what I expected. But to my surprise it was delicious, just don't expect your typical pancakes. It was seriously like the size of a LARGE apple pie. I have been asking my husband to take me here for the last year and a half and we finally did when some relatives visited us from out of town! Our wait on a Saturday at noon was surprisingly only 25 minutes, considering there were a ton of folks waiting outside. Good thing it was worth the wait! Our server(s) were fantastic - knowledgeable and didn't skip a beat refilling drinks. The eggs benedict I ordered were simple, but so delicious. The potato pancakes that came with it were so good - like comfort food to the max. I could've eaten it all day. My favorite (and last second addition!) was the coconut waffle. OPH is one of the few places that I order pancakes. I'm usually not a fan, but there's something about them here that makes me really enjoy them. We've tried other locations, but none of them are as good as the Madison one. Having said that, my usual order is actually the 49er Flapjacks, which are thinner and chewier. As a Madison native, I've been going to the Madison branch for about 15 years. Most valuable brunch award. Ambiance: It is a chain but for the Original Pancake House, each branch is very different. This is the least fancy one I've been to, and it feels the most homey and local. I think it is also cheaper. You'll most likely wait at least 20 minutes on the weekends no matter how small your group is. I've eaten before closing once and the waiter gave us free hash browns that they had made and didn't serve. Lunch: Everything is SO GOOD! I tend to get omelettes for brunch or french toast if I'm feeling like splurging. But I never get omelettes or french toast here because everything else is too good. -Crepes are amazing. Blueberry crepes are my go-to. It comes with blueberry syrup with real blueberries in it. They always match a syrup with your flavor of crepe or pancakes. -The waffles are crunchy and soft on the inside. -The pancakes are huge and fluffy but not too fluffy. I love that they have healthier options like buckwheat pancakes. -The whipped cream comes with almost any dish if you ask for it. It's house made and so good. -Too few people get the Dutch Baby, possibly because there is a warning sign on the menu of taking longer than other orders, but it always comes out at a reasonable time. It's chewy like a swedish pancake, but thicker, and toasty on the edges. They give a very generous serving of strawberries and banana on it too, so I always pay the extra couple dollars for the fruit. I always share it with everyone I'm eating with and I still leave full and everyone else decides they're getting the Dutch Baby next time. read more
