For dinner, ORIO provided an average meal & an average experience. I probably would go somewhere else next time. You almost always need a reservation in Barcelona - We learned that the hard way. After striking out at a few places that we wanted to try (they were jam packed & booked out for the evening) we came across ORIO. There were quite a few empty tables, so that should've been the first sign. But we were hungry & tired of walking in the rain, so we decided to stay. I felt immediately like we were inconveniencing them for being there - Although that's not an unusual feeling when dining out in Spain. Maybe it was because our Spanish was sketchy at best or maybe it was because we didn't have a reservation. Who knows. The interior was somewhat neat - ship/ocean themed - but a little overdone. The overhead lights were blasting, so the restaurant was too bright. The vibes were not vibing. Once we got settled, we ordered wine for the table. It was tasty, albeit a bit expensive for Barcelona. The staff also brought us bread. No olive oil or butter, just bread. They brought me gluten-free bread, too, which was appreciated. They brought us a funny little bonus amuse bouche that we didn't order - Small fish skewered with olives & some kind of pickled peppers. Scary looking! Okay tasting. Salty. Definitely weird. Next up, we ordered a few appetizers - Croquettes & leeks. I couldn't try the croquettes, because they weren't gluten-free, but the rest of the table seemed to enjoy them. The leeks were slimy & relatively tasteless, which broke my heart a little bit. I love leeks. I didn't love these leeks. For my entree, I ordered the cod with pil-pil sauce. I was so disappointed. The meal was somewhat visually appealing, but that's all it really had going for it. It completely lacked texture & taste. It was like eating mush. I couldn't finish even half of it. One of my friends ordered the oxtail dish & shared some with me - It was tasty! However, it came a la carte. No starch, no vegetable, nothing. Just meat on a plate. The restaurant is located next to a beautiful alley with outdoor seating. The staff was very attentive and gave us a complementary tapa which was a nice gesture. The tuna tartare came with grilled bread and salad. The tuna was fresh but it felt like it was missing something. The basque white bean stew was very good and unique with a decent amount of cod and clams. The prices are higher and reflect a creative menu compared to other nearby restaurants which sets it apart. read more

Very upscale interior design, folks go to mostly drink. Their pintxos were large in size and very filling. It was too early for alcohol, so I opted for a sparkling bottled water with lemon. Very hard to determine what you are getting, since there were no labels. They tasted fresh but you can tell it's been sitting there for quite a while based on the food temperatures. Three AND A HALF stars for me personally but will go back for next time and try their pintxos with a good wine and great company. read more

I'm rather surprised at the mixed somewhat all over the place reviews on Orio as I've dined here on several occasions and have found everything about the place to be a delightful as well as unique culinary experience. At my last experience I ordered their fish special. I asked what kind of fish it was but the only answer I could get, or at least the only answer I could understand, was that it was a white flaky fish. Prior to my fish being served, however, I was given a complementary wooden stick containing some really tasty olives wrapped between white anchovy which was an appetizer treat I've never been served before. When my fish came, the presentation was first class and the fish, whatever kind it was, one of the best in overall texture and flavor I've ever had. Orio isn't a fancy restaurant, doesn't try to be. It's almost pub like in atmosphere but has a huge array of desserts, specials and a specialty of fresh shucked oysters. Another good thing about it is its location on Ferran Street, a pedestrian street that is one of my favorite walking streets in Barcelona. For the quality, freshness and unique tasty preparations of their food and the prices of it which are more than reasonable, for what it is, and though nothing fancy, it's a solid Four Stars for me. read more

The Quick: I was surprised by how great the pinxto (toothpick tapas) were and how much I enjoyed this spot. The blue cheese with jalapeño jelly is a hit, as are the different croquette options. Great spot. The Details: After dining at the extremely popular (crowded) Irati, I was cautiously optimistic to try the spot. At first it looks modern and what could be seen as touristy, but don't be fooled. The spot is excellent food, great staff, and ample space... No frustrating crowds to deal with while you peruse the tapas options. We went twice during our trip; worth a visit if you're adventurous and like to try new foods. This was my first experience with a tapas bar - slash - restaurant and the staff were very friendly and helpful. This was a good thing as my Spanish is passable at best and my Catalan is very much a work in progress. You can choose tapas or the formal menu or some of each. Tapas are €2.20 each which is a little on the high side, so bear that in mind before you go too crazy! I had a half dozen, mostly cheese and fish, all delicious. I ordered the salad with duck from the menu and finished with the cheese plate starter as my dessert. With a cerveza - they have the omnipresent Estrella on tap - my bill was €35.00 (there is a 10% gratuity included, so no extra tipping is required). This was a little more than I had planned to spend, but it's a lovey place, fairly easy to locate and definitely worth a visit. Remember you are in Spain, so it's a leisurely experience. We stumbled upon this restaurant on our way to another Basque style restaurant and decided to head in. We were served by Jose who was very knowledgeable and nice, he walked us through the different pintxos (in English and Spanish for our multilingual table), and gave us opinions and info on the wine list. Great place to eat the night before heading to San Sebastián, land of the pintxos! Definitely recommend to anyone in the area, and helps to avoid the tourist traps on La Ramblas! So there are really good tapas in Barcelona and then there are average tapas. This falls into the latter category but if you cannot find a higher-rated tapas joint, don't skip this one. Also, they are opened late at night here in the Gothic Quarter. Hint: take the hot tapas offered as they are the same price and are freshly prepared. The croquettes were a highlight. You can only get hot tapas as they are served. The rest of the items were definitely not memorable but were definitely not awful. The staff and service was also mediocre. It felt more like a tourist trap then a genuine tapas place but it was opened late, had semi- decent reviews and was in the Gothic Quarter, as mentioned earlier. If this is your ONLY choice for tapas, don't skip tapas but if you have other options, go ahead and explore them. I definitely give you permission. read more

After the waiter showed us how to pour cider from over his head we enjoyed artichoke/sardine; Spanish omelette on toast; smoked salmon; anchovy with string beans, olives & chilies and on and on. Total tourist trap with extremely poor service. The setup of the bread bocaditos is cute and inviting, but it's just for show. The bocaditos were bland. The man shucking the oysters had no idea what he was doing and had so much trouble shucking that he damaged the shells and caused lots of flecks of the shell to fall inside the oyster. We saw the man fumble around endlessly with them, but gave it the benefit of the doubt to try them. We ended up eating many oyster shell flecks and only consumed 3 of the total 6 oysters. When we brought it to the staff's attention, they were not helpful and only wanted to reduce the oyster charge by 15%! Please stay away! Bad service and bad food. read more

Grupo Sagardi management are just trying to ignore it. Obviously they DO NOT know anything about customer relationship or worse they don´t care. My advice is to do the same. This is a very nice place to sit down and have some pintxos or tapas. Very casual and full of locals, always a good sign. There is some row-boat-theme going on but I didn't get it. The owner was probably in some national team or so. So you'll eat sitting underneath an upsidedown rowboat. Have some wines, and walk up to the bar and gather some pintxos. Just save the picks, they will count them at the end and they're worth 1,95 a piece. (this wouldn't work in Holland, idiots would hide some sticks.) You can also order some other dishes, and the staff will come by from time to time carrying other bites. You're seated on long, high tables, so there will probably be people you don't know, sharing your table, but thats ok. Because of the high tables and barstools it pretty much feels like a bar anyway. Orio is a great option if you need a meal on the go in Barcelona. You can grab a seat here, sample various tapas at the bar (self-serve), and be on your way in a fraction of an hour, without a hassle. The server will tally the toothpicks on your plate and calculate your bill, which is kind of cool. Great selection of tapas for 1.95 euro, some sweet some savory. Honestly, I can't say how good the food is or isn't. We have been there twice and walked out both times. The first night we tried to eat here, we walked in and stood in the entryway for 5 mins waiting to be seated. We left since no one acknowledged us and had a fantastic dinner elsewhere. The second time we came in, we were seated in the back and no one came to our table for 20 minutes. We got up and left out the side door. We entered and were seated promptly however when we got up for the buffet bar area our seats were taken by other guests then we got looks and shrugs like "nothing we can do". Then after a few minutes got shoved in a corner. When we mentioned again our seats were taken and we didn't want to be shoved in the corner we were told to "chill out, you are on vacation". We didnt eat here, just stopped in for a bottle of wine. They have a great outdoor seating area behind some old iron gates on the side. The wine list was well appointed, we had a 2006 muga Rioja that was very tasty. Good service, no rush here. Relax and enjoy at a leisurely pace. The community seating makes it possible to meet new ppl as the place begins to fill up and folks are forced to sit together. Stopped here for lunch whilst sightseeing around the city. Really enjoyed going up to the counter to choose your pinchos and they offer a really good variety. We stumbled upon this restaurant in the gothic quarter and made sure to come back again before our visit ended not only because of the fun atmosphere but because of the amazing (and cheap) tapas. The sangria was incredible and the best advice I can give is wait for the servers to bring around the freshest tapas to the table and eat those....that way you don't get any cold food and an get the food literally right or of the kitchen. This place is OK - decent food, slightly overpriced. The highlight was the waitress making a gin & tonic. She cooled the glass with ice cubes, scented the rim with lemon zest and poured the gin right over the zest to give it a fresher flavour. But the oxtail main dish was bizarre! It came with 2 giant pieces of oxtail with no side dish...now I'm a huge carnivore but an all meat dish was a little hard to stomach. I had to steal a few potatoes from my husband's plate just to get through it. I'd go again for the tapas bar, not the menu. read more

This restaurant has an inside buffet tapas with communal shared bench seats. Tapas looked great. We chose the a la carte and sat in the side courtyard. Food was classic Catalan with just small portions of whichever fish or meat dish you choose. I had red tuna which was very good, but no other food on the plate. My wife had suckling pork which was not good - very thin cut, very fatty, tough chewy crackling. If you want something to accompany your meal would recommend attempting to negotiate a salad starter to arrive with the meal. Wine was great. read more
