TLDR: COME FOR THE PINTXOS. HARD PASS ON THE MENU. Pintxos are self-serve at the bar. Once you're done eating, check out with the waiter--they'll count and charge you per toothpick. NGL, I'm someone who gets overwhelmed and gets tunnel vision. I'm a sheep following the shepherd-- in this case, if you throw your body & a menu in front of me, I'll easily walk in. I'd seen great reviews online about their namesake pintxos, but the menu had so many options and none that clicked with what I was looking for. I was hungry, so I sent it and ordered a few items from the classic tapas: the Squid in Ink Croquette and the Patatas Bravas. The croquette was incredible and so flavorful, while the Patatas Bravas were the complete opposite. The potatoes tasted bland and stale, and the sauce on top was just... meh. I hated how let down I was!! As I was finishing up my meal, I noticed a few people coming in and were sitting at the bar--not usually the most go-to spot when there are plenty of tables open. However, as soon as they sat down, they began grabbing items from the display. I went to check it out and lo and behold--PINTXOS!!! I asked my waiter, and he explained the process: pick what you want, enjoy and pay for what charge you grab at the end. And honestly? They looked and tasted so much better and were way more affordable than what I ordered!! Disappointed I spent so much money, but consider this a lesson for anyone reading! read more

Found this very cool tapas bar in the Gothic Quarter. They display the tapas and you take the ones you want. We also shared the mixed plate of cheeses and meats. Two types of cheese and four types of meat. We also shared a pitcher of Sangria blanc. The service was great and the venue nice. At the end of the meal they give you complimentary Lemoncello. We were looking for pintxos for a late lunch, and arrived around 4 PM on a Saturday. They were not very busy. They staff were all very approachable. They had menus in at least 4 languages (Catalan, Spanish, and English, plus at least one more). You can grab seats at the bar or at tables. The pintxos are on display above the bar, as is typical, and it is self serve. The price is 2 euros per pintxos. The bartender was delighted to point out everything they had. Everyone else on staff asked us how we liked everything. My husband was hoping to find boquerones with olives and we didn't see them so asked about them and the bartender brought some out, already prepared! We also had salmon, tuna, jamon iberico, pulpo a la gallega, chorizo on eggplant, zucchini with something yummy on top, and bacalao salad. Then we ordered the squid ink croquettes from the tapas menu. Everything was great. read more

Basque pinxtos bar in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Many pinxots offerings from vegetarian, meat, and seafood all well organized for the choosing with tongs. They also offer a full menu, wines by the glass and bottle, and a few beers. Pinxtos range from 1,50 to 3,50 euros depending on toothpick size. Staff is friendly, but this is a place that understands tourists come there as they delicately ask "would you like to leave a tip for staff?" You can if you want, but don't feel the need. We saw Barcelona food tours stop here, but it doesn't mean they slack on the quality of food or service. To us it didn't feel cheesy or resting on laurels. Came here because my mom saw that Rick Steves recommended it. Lol. Wasn't busy at all, there were just a couple other tables filled. We ordered a few hot tapas, and got a bunch of the cold tapas. Everything came on top of a piece of bruschetta and had a stick through it. They give you a cup to put all the sticks in. At the end of your meal, they count the sticks and that's how you pay. For the cold tapas, I got a smoked salmon, a jamon, and a seafood salad one. All were great, I got seconds of each. For the hot tapas, we got the squid, blood sausage, shrimp, spicy sausage, cheese. I had the squid and shrimp and they were both great as well. After paying our check they gave us some grappa, which is some alcoholic beverage you can take shots of for "digestive" health. Lol. Not sure of the cost because my brother paid for it, but he said it was relatively cheap. I would definitely go back. read more

I really enjoyed the concept that was happening here. Tip: Bar seats are best in house So you are seated at either a table or the bar top. The bar top is where it's poppin, because that's where all of the food is. You take a seat and grab what you want. You're charged by how long the toothpick is that was in your pintixo (basque tapas). Some are better than others and they have another menu you can order hot pintixos from. Those are made to order. It can get cozy so be prepared to rub elbows! read more

This is a review for the smaller location near the marina. There is only one dedicated full service waitress, everyone else is busy trying to keep the cold tapas bar, and the beer and sangria flowing. The girl that greeted us shut down after I told in Spanish that my Spanish was bad. She did not bring us a menu or utensils like others had received. The only reason why I did not rate lower was because the Italian waitress and the food made up for the neglect from the first server! This was very reasonably priced, the cold tapas were about 2 euros each and none of the got tapas were more than 4 euros. If you are hungry, make sure you order at least one tapas per person because they are not easy to share as most come on a piece of crispy baguette. I was a little concerned by the presence of a loud tour group crowding the front of the restaurant when we arrived but there were lots of tables in the back so we grabbed some pint so from the counter and made ourselves comfortable. We ordered some hot tapas and a round of sidra which was poured with the appropriate flourish. The food was good especially the bacalao and squid. In the Gothic Quarter, one block east of Las Ramblas and running parallel is Carrer de Petritxol. At #9 is a Basque-owned place having a very good selection of hot and cold pintxos. From the hot menu, we had choricitos sidra (cider sausage), asparagus roll, Txistorra (spicy Basque sausage), scrambled eggs & jamon, ham croquette, grilled squid and Arantxa (shrimp, mushroom & bacon). That list was augmented by 6 cold tapas which included 'La Gilda', made with 2 guindillas (thin green chilies) and 1 green olive wrapped with an anchovy - the pintxo most emblematic of the cuisine. The name comes from a 1946 Rita Hayworth character, so derived because both were "green, salty, and a little spicy". The above was washed down by 2 Txakoli and 4 sangrias. Total was 41€. It's a very affordable place right off of las ramblas which is the touristy street in Barcelona. The tapas here were fine and perhaps mediocre (some dishes were excellent) but the price were very affordable. We ordered 14 small dishes and cost approx 37 euro. Overall a good place to order a ton of small tapas and try everything. The service was the low point, even compare to other restaurants in Barcelona or cafe we've been to. Our waitress was nicer towards the end but at the beginning, she was a bit abrasive and indifferent in her attitude. But the tapas and the price makes it a good place to visit for an affordable tapas eats experience in Barcelona. read more

Not the easiest place to find. Look for the hat shop, go down the alley. This was my first tapas stop after arriving in Spain. The first of many to follow. I ordered the standard "starter tapas" - potatoes with spicy sauce, grilled peppers, a couple of shrimp. I'm finishing this saved review, a few weeks later, as an old time tapas pro. This place was fine. I'd go back for more exotic items next time through. Explore the area back there, wander off the Ramblas though some of those narrow medieval paths. Find the condom store nearby. Stopped in here late one night for dinner after getting frustrated trying to find food on La Rambla. (Don't. They've got all the most over-priced, tourist-oriented restaurants.) We were well-treated, even given that my wife was surly from hunger and frustration. We made another newbie mistake in not looking at the display of pintxos to help guide our choices. I had the prawns in garlic casserole (nothing to write home about), an arantxa pintxo (with mushroom, prawn and bacon) and (highlight of the night) the broken eggs: scrambled eggs and potatoes sprinkled with plenty of crispy bacon. Pintxos are Basque. Barcelona is (for the most part) Catalán. So not every pintxo place in Barcelona is going to be worthy of as many stars. These guys have excellent pintxos. They have VERY good tapas, as well. Their presentation is not unique; a long counter where you can self-serve the pintxos; a quieter seating area in the back where you can enjoy some leisurely eats (as opposed to the frenetic activity along the aforementioned counter). A chalk-board menu with the special tapas of the day and liquid refreshments. Not unusual for the tourist quarter. What sets these guys apart is the SERVICE. Not that they have any fawning, over-the-top waiters (are you familiar with The Triplets of Belleville?)... no, these guys (and gal) are honest, hard-working and genuinely interested in making a positive impression... on the off-chance that you'll be in town long enough to return here. Now that my wife and I have relocated to BCN, we've been back here half a dozen times, and intend to keep on going back! The conviviality of the waitstaff is what makes this place WORK. (I hope the owner gives them each a raise - they are priceless ambassadors of goodwill.) Each time we've been treated like royalty. Our lack of linguistic dexterity has not been an impediment AT ALL. (The two regular waiters speak nine languages between them.) They are patient (and kind, awaiting my wife's attempts at making her Castilian understood while (gently) critiquing my stab at Catalán). Their english isn't bad, either! ;-) After an unfettered amount of time at your table (regardless of how crowded the place is, they never make you feel rushed), when you're ready for the bill, they'll bring out a 'digestif.' on the house. It may be a limoncello or grappa, perhaps even an analog to Ramazotti. They'll leave these at your table (to your own peril) until you're ready to leave. You feel almost as if you're at home... except someone else is preparing the food, clearing the plates and getting you to slowly embrace what Spanish living is all about. Cheers! read more
