Judging from other reviews and what I witnessed, Kaleen might be a great 1-on-1 coach but her camps are not managed well. She looked angry/frustrated 90% of the time while her teaching assistants appear scared at her; perhaps it was due to dealing with such a large group of students. The younger and older kids are separated into different groups. Kaleen and another teaching pro (Paul?) concentrated on teaching the older students while they had teaching assistants (high-school minors) babysit the other half. I saw several young kids just standing around bouncing balls and doing nothing tennis-related for quite some time. I went up to talk to Kaleen and the teaching assistants to ask for feedback, and I did not get anything useful. Toward the end of this camp, my child doesn't even know how to hold a tennis racquet. I spent about an hour correcting things she learn and didn't learn, now she can properly hit a ball and have correct foot work. This proves that the teaching assistants didn't provide enough attention and inexperienced to teach others. I regret sending my kid there and I would never enroll at their summer camps again. Save your money for private lessons and don't expect your child to learn anything at their camps, especially if you think they will be part of the younger half of students enrolled. Advice for K-lean's Tennis: Try to focus on students of all ages in your camp -OR- train your teaching assistants to do a better job.

Very practical. After relocating to the Portland area, I was looking for a dojo that was of quality and the schedule fit mine. I contacted two dojos, one of them being Shudokan Judo Dojo. Blane sensei returned my message within 24 hours (the other dojo never got back to me...poo). After attending a session and liked what I saw, I decided to try this out. Positives: - very nice people, which is great because no one wants to work out with a "macho" meathead or someone who is careless, inconsiderate, or too aggressive. - clean environment, nice mats. - relaxed atmosphere (which does not mean easy practices or slacking on etiquette and respect) - meaning not being stressed to perform or be perfect, everyone is very patient and helpful. - most importantly, the sensei (along with the others) really focus on form and balance, not only on big throws, ippons, belt promotions, and tournaments. Which this is great - allows me to slow down and focus (I am doing judo for self-improvement, not about the belt or tournaments). - Blane sensei is really nice, respectful, and pretty funny at times. - super affordable. Challenges: - the place is a little small, but can still have three pairs of randori at the same time. - would like to see more students. - me getting better at judo. So, overall, the "Challenges" are minor and do not detract from the quality, learning, and overall experience of this dojo. Anyone interested in learning judo should check this place out!

She started at her school where this course was introduced as an afterschool activity. And now Kathleen is also working with kids in a separate room from their parents at Pure 8 hot yoga in Beaverton. They were still in a shared location with snap fitness when we started a brief relocation down to boring and now we're in our final new location at the Troutdale outlet mall Absolutely beautiful spot, mats are always clean, people are always fresh. Lots of kids and younger guys here and teen class for the teens that are kind of in between the adult and the kid learning mindset. Professor here as a fifth-degree black belt Brazilian as it gets. An absolute master of the craft. You won't be getting anything water down here. Prices are very comparable from what I have seen online for other places in the area. It's been an absolutely amazing experience for me and my kids. As a 36 year-old that started JiuJitsu with zero athletic background I can honestly say it was a bit intimidating to get on the Matt for the first time. Both of my kids had done taekwondo and receive black belts and worked for years at it. That was my turn on the second path to join in with them. The fun thing is on Saturday. There is a family class where you and any age kids can all be in the same class together and it really does give a unique experience. Right now, the school is growing their numbers up again at the new location and is a great time to start because you're gonna get some smaller class sizes for the new students and really emphasize the learning mindset . After a ton of googling and researching (with not any options that I was thrilled with) I finally found Checkmat Portland. Being a new gym, it took some searching to discover, but I'm so glad I didn't settle. After coming across them, I ended up checking out their IG: Checkmatportland and I had a chance to speak directly with the owner, Professor Junior. Professor Junior was very nice, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable in the sport. Immediately after speaking with him, I knew this was the gym to choose for my stay. During my visit, I attended 3 classes, all of which were were great. I walked away with new moves, and really good training tips from each session. I was very impressed with his passion for teaching and how quickly he was able to identify areas in my personal game that I could improve upon. I am forever grateful for the opportunity I had to train with Professor Junior, for his assistance and knowledge he shared with me. I will definitely be returning every time I'm in town!

He was having a difficult time behavior wise so we decided to sign him up. Within a couple of weeks he showed great improvement ! In December he received an award for great behavior, he's a very energetic child so this helps a lot. His teacher is impressed and so are we thanks to his masters !!
