This Rec Center is moderately sized and has all the things you would expect to see inside a college gym, such as cardio machines, full weight room, studios, indoor track, and basketball courts. They also have a variety of exercise equipment that you can rent out and trainers available for assistance. The Rec Center is better than the gym at my undergrad, but I wouldn't say it's the best college gym I've worked out in. It's missing a couple pieces of equipment I like to incorporate into my workout so I'm forced to get creative. Additionally this place gets swamped by students so the best time to come here is at unpopular times, such as early in the morning. Party room is solid and functions well for the needs, but it's the kids climbing area that is of value. Over 10 separate walls of varying detail, obstacle climbing spots, plenty of automatic repel machines, counter walls, and even interactive obstacles like build your own block walls. Only drawback is ventilation within that children's climb area as it gets hot quick and even if they bring in a box fan, it doesn't circulate the whole room which is what's needed. The main climb area is well cooled and ventilated so I really don't understand why that one specific area is so bad.

It's located in a large strip mall which also has a Goodwill thrift store on the other side. Very little top rope climbing (just one wall). I believe the Maryland Heights location is supposed to have more top roping but we didn't go there. Day passes were kind of a teeny more expensive than I was hoping ($20) but if you can return again at all the memberships and class packs sound like a good deal. They also were running Black Friday sales for the weekend and those seemed good too but we couldn't really be around to take advantage of those. We were there Sunday early afternoon and there was no one else there. People started trickling in around 3pm and by 5pm there was a healthy crowd there, but still pretty easy to get on a wall with almost no wait. The kids seemed to be having a great time in the "Wacky Wall" area with the auto belays. It has a separate reservation portal/system and separate pricing. There's also a small private room off to the side for birthday parties and events. The climbing "cave" was pretty cool but damn do the holds need to be brushed. Slid off (probably because we rented shoes as well) more times than I'd like. Pretty challenging routes and a good variety of routes too, but I'm not sure how much they reset them. The wall whiteboard said June 2021 but that didn't seem updated. The fitness area was decent but I'd maybe become bored if the area became crowded with more people using it at peak hours. But since I wasn't planning on becoming a member, it was perfect. :) Locker rooms and showers were a little dated and old (women's side, I did not see the men's) but fit the requirements. The lockers have their own electronic locks with instructions on them, but I couldn't get them to work/many of them were locked. It didn't matter much to me since I wanted to keep most of my stuff in the cubbies out in the climbing area anyway. Wish we could come back to the gym more than once this trip but I'm sure we'll be back in the future.

This community gym has got a lot going for it, but it's not quite perfect…read more The things I like about this gym are: 1) Plenty machines so you never really have to wait for one 2) For a community gym, it's really very clean and the premises are quite grand 2) Airy, open space with a view out onto some grass rather than, say, a busy road 3) Very good membership rates, especially for local residents - we pay $40 a month for the two of us 4) There's an indoor running track 5) A somewhat decent selection of classes 6) The clientele is generally low key rather than scary muscle men putting your work-out to shame Things that I feel are a problem: 1) The Sunday closing time of 5pm 2) The scales are often broken 3) The people who work there don't really have a clue what's going on. I had to change my bank details for the monthly payment, and it took me the best part of a month to find an employee who could actually handle this task 4) You have to give 3 months' notice to cancel 5) There's no pay-as-you-go for classes. You have to pick one time that you're going to come every week and sign up for a whole "session" which goes on for 10 weeks or so, and pay upfront for the whole session 6) There's no Body Pump class - a personal favorite of mine 7) Sometimes the "low key clientele" like to stare at you as you puff away on the treadmill because all they're doing is walking at a 2mph pace, so they need some entertainment Looking over the two lists above, it seems as though there's really more negatives than positives, so it's somewhat surprising that I'm giving this gym 4 stars. I think what saves it for me is the low monthly price and the fact that it's a no-frills, let-you-get-on-with-it kind of gym - they're not constantly trying to sell you a "premium" membership, or get you to refer friends, like some other gyms - and what you see is what you really get as far as membership is concerned. There was no pressure to try any of the climbs they had and we were able to take our time and climb for HOURS. We got here around 3pm and left around 6:40 and we had a great time! All the gear here at upper limits are reliable and the people here were super friendly! Would definitely recommend this place for beginners and advanced climbers alike!

We went on a Saturday morning soon after opening and it was packed. Check in was easy and quick and I got a brief orientation before starting to climb. Since it was crowded there was an occasional wait to climb certain walls but it gave me a much needed rest between climbs. I also tried bouldering for the first time which was pretty fun and different.
