Place is a hidden gem in the back of Chesterfield Commons. Lots of space, a multitude of classes, plenty of equipment on sale there to enable you, and even children birthday party areas. Party room is solid and functions well for the needs, but it's the kids climbing area that is of value. Over 10 separate walls of varying detail, obstacle climbing spots, plenty of automatic repel machines, counter walls, and even interactive obstacles like build your own block walls. Only drawback is ventilation within that children's climb area as it gets hot quick and even if they bring in a box fan, it doesn't circulate the whole room which is what's needed. The main climb area is well cooled and ventilated so I really don't understand why that one specific area is so bad. read more

A great bouldering gym! We were visiting from DC so here is what I wish I knew about the gyms before researching myself on the r/climbing subreddit on Reddit and other sites: This location (Chesterfield/West County) is basically a bouldering gym. It's located in a large strip mall which also has a Goodwill thrift store on the other side. Very little top rope climbing (just one wall). I believe the Maryland Heights location is supposed to have more top roping but we didn't go there. Day passes were kind of a teeny more expensive than I was hoping ($20) but if you can return again at all the memberships and class packs sound like a good deal. They also were running Black Friday sales for the weekend and those seemed good too but we couldn't really be around to take advantage of those. We were there Sunday early afternoon and there was no one else there. People started trickling in around 3pm and by 5pm there was a healthy crowd there, but still pretty easy to get on a wall with almost no wait. The kids seemed to be having a great time in the "Wacky Wall" area with the auto belays. It has a separate reservation portal/system and separate pricing. There's also a small private room off to the side for birthday parties and events. The climbing "cave" was pretty cool but damn do the holds need to be brushed. Slid off (probably because we rented shoes as well) more times than I'd like. Pretty challenging routes and a good variety of routes too, but I'm not sure how much they reset them. The wall whiteboard said June 2021 but that didn't seem updated. The fitness area was decent but I'd maybe become bored if the area became crowded with more people using it at peak hours. But since I wasn't planning on becoming a member, it was perfect. :) Locker rooms and showers were a little dated and old (women's side, I did not see the men's) but fit the requirements. The lockers have their own electronic locks with instructions on them, but I couldn't get them to work/many of them were locked. It didn't matter much to me since I wanted to keep most of my stuff in the cubbies out in the climbing area anyway. Don't come here unless you're ready for a workout!! I am not a regular climber, but my friends brought me here last night with one of their monthly guest passes and we had a blast! When I arrived, I had a quick and thorough orientation with the staff member who checked me in, - he was super friendly and helpful. I learned about which routes I would be most comfortable on and which would challenge me--then we dove right in! Whether you are new to climbing or more of a veteran this is a great gym. They also have multiple bouldering areas, and learned that they have tons of class and program options for both members and otherwise. Don't forget Thursday night is ladies night, $10 and you're in! I had a wonderful experience at this Upper Limits location! I went here for a "date night" with my girlfriend and we did the 2-hour Rock Climbing 101 class. They offer small group lessons that go through the belay and climbing process. Our instructor (Brian or Bryan?) was phenomenal! He made the class an enjoyable activity and not a boring, tedious class. Following the 2-hour class, we had free reign of the facility and could either continue to do the belay climbing or switch over to the bouldering section or do both! The bouldering section is gigantic and there are several different level of difficulty routes to choose from for all ranges of experience. The facilities were actually a LOT nicer than I expected. They have a full locker room (showers too!), climbing walls, bouldering section, treadmills, bikes, training area, lounge, and "wacky walls" which is a giant room of specialty walls. Definitely a fun activity to try if you haven't gone before! I would highly recommend doing the Rock Climbing 101 class if you want the full experience. I hear a rumor of a new gym opening up in St. Louis soon, and thank the gods! Mind you I am from out of town and only climbed here to get my fix, and if I wasn't such a junkie I wouldn't have gone at all! The ropes are in a horrid condition. Ropes at gyms see a lot of use, and should be replaced on a yearly basis. If at any point a rope has flat/soft spots, the core becomes visible or the sheath has obvious wear and/or "shine" they need to be chucked. It is acceptable to cut the ropes, if the wear is localized to just one end. It looked like a lot of ropes have been cut, but not a lot had been fully examined in a while. I noticed quite a few flat spots on the rope and a rope that had been cut but just the core, and the sheath was scrunched up around what was left... you can't pull a rope like that through a belay device, how is that safe? I can not and will not give a rating beyond 1 star to a gym that over looks safety like that. I brought my own shoes and harness with me on the trip so I didn't get a good look at the shape of their rental harnesses, I'll just hope they are okay. As far as everything else? They do have some fun routes, it's kept clean (as clean as any climbing gym can ever be), there are lockers to stow your things, and quite a bit of bouldering and lead climbing. Which are all solid aspects to a gym. The place has a lot of potential, but until they start vamping up their safety I'd steer clear. Two side notes: -Half of the bouldering problems are rated with the V-system, and the stuff upstairs is something else (Rec, Intermediate, Expert, Advanced maybe? It's all single letters and I don't recall what they all were). -Some people have a tendency to walk between the belayer and the wall, this is never a good idea! Staff members didn't seem to say anything about it, but think about it: The rope isn't top notch, and especially is you are using an ATC over a grigri, and guaranteed any lead climbers, if a climber takes a fall, they may knock you ought and it's not their fault. I may be the only tough critic, but I really don't screw around when it comes to playing it safe. read more

Upper limits is pretty bad ass. Although it is pretty tough for beginners, climbing is worth a shot for those seeking something new and challenging to try. Bernie D. and I took the Rock Climbing 101 class to learn the ropes, and although our instructor was a bit distracted, she taught us everything we needed to know in order to climb and belay safely. It can be pretty crowded on the weekends and early in the evenings on weekdays. They have auto-belay machines for those who may be coming solo. They have bouldering courses in addition to the climbing courses. Every course is marked with a level and the route which is very helpful for a newbie like myself. Feel free to free climb anywhere though! Overall a great workout and a friendly, helpful staff. I will be back to give that big bad wall another shot! read more

My boyfriend and I came here because we got the groupon. I really enjoyed my experience. The staff was friendly, the lessons were clear, and there was SO MUCH SPACE to CLIMB! I totally want to try this again sometime... once I do have time... And the girl teaching us was really cool! There was a little kid in the group so to teach us how to tie knots, she turned the rope into a monster that we needed to punch in the face and strangle! It was adorable and memorable! I was going on a date and he found a Groupon for this place. Sure, lets me adventurous and save some cash. This deal was for 2 people and we got a two hour class, all of the equipment and two hours of free climbing. We were told to not be late for class, not even 10 minutes. At the Upper Limits safety is their number one goal and I totally get it. It was a class size of 8 people. We were taught how to tie knots, belay and communication between you and your partner. Sara, was our instructor, very much to the point. It was alittle hot in the place, and it did smell of body odor and feet. But what an adventure. Groupon is the way to go when trying this for a night. Memberships are offered, tons of different ways to climb. Give it a try. My suggestion, where workout pants, not shorts. The harness rub you in some interesting ways and I was grateful for the yoga pants. read more

Neat place! Came here for the first time the other day with a friend, who showed me the ropes (literally and figuratively -- hey now, Yelp doesn't pay me by the joke). The environment is fun, with sporty-looking individuals bounding about and chill downtempo-yet-athletic sounding music in the background. A friendly dog roamed behind the counter. If you're into climbing, gyms, or general athletic excitement, look no further. Although I wish this place were a little less expensive, this experience does not come cheap. A gym I have been visiting for years and would visit more if I didn't live so far from it. (Luckily their West County gym is closer to home.) Home to rock climbing and crack addicts. You know..the crack in the rocks? :P If you love rock climbing or just want a fun new way to get your fitness on this is the place for you. All levels are welcome as there are so many different climbs to do. Wednesday nights are student nights so get your ID cards ready. They have lockers in the back to keep your stuff just bring a lock if you want to keep it secure ( i never have and have never had a problem). A perfect place to "hang" out for a couple hours. Great way to get the mind thinking about the fitness rather than going through the motions while watching TV. ALSO Great spot for a lot of the local college crowd (Wash U) to hang out at and great for birthday parties as well so obviously it is fantastic for kids. read more

If say, I'm dating somebody and she says, "Yeah...I'm DEFINITELY active! I LOOVE working out," Upper Limits is where I drag her to test it. Even for those muscle heads, who spend countless hours in the gym adding weight to their bench press bars, rock climbing is hardcore. If you've never had the chance to try it, Upper Limits is the perfect place to take the chance; besides, even if you pass out, it'll make for a pretty sweet story to tell. For anyone who hasn't done it before, there is absolutely NO experience necessary. You won't need to know how to belay or study proper technique; none of that is required to get started. The instructors will start you on an auto-belay, which means your rope is automatically attached to your body and the wall; you're automatically supplied with a harness upon paying admission, so that isn't an issue either. The inside of the building is literally covered in climbing paths, and you have all the space in the world to climb. Whether you're a complete beginner or an expert climber, you'll have plenty of room to move around. Each path is also ranked in level of difficulty, and the instructors are very helpful in teaching you how to navigate them. Compared to the other options in the city, Upper Limits is also the cheapest. So, all you Casanovas on a budget don't have to worry about breaking the bank. Even the official membership is comparatively cheap, at only $34 a month! Once you become a member, you're entitled to a ton of classes and unlimited access to the walls, gear, and gym downstairs. Upper Limits is the only climbing gym I've used in St. Louis, but it's superior to gyms I've used in other cities in most ways. I like bouldering as well as climbing, and though you can theoretically boulder around the perimeter of the entire gym, you're at the mercy of climbers, since the bouldering areas are directly beneath the full climbing areas. (You can see the bouldering/climbing distinction in the photos posted here - the bouldering areas are grey, and anything red requires use of harnesses.) On a whole, I've had a good experience here. People are friendly overall, and the gym takes safety seriously (don't expect to practice for your belay test in the gym - they won't pass you if you do). Your perception on pricing will be relative to what you've paid in other places and whether you own your own gear. If you own your own shoes and harness, it's not too expensive to climb for the day. If you purchase a membership and own your own gear, you don't pay at all on a per-use basis. If you plan to climb often, the membership is probably the most cost-effective option. If you need to rent gear and pay per climb, expect to spend $20+ dollars (depending on what gear you need to rent) to climb for the day. read more

Not as great as the Maryland Heights. It needs better customer service, staff is not very friendly on entrance and they don't explain very well of the pricing. This place you have less height and options to climb. If you want to autobelay you only get 1 hr in the wacky wall room which is better suited for kids and bday parties, it's not worth the price of $17 when you can go to Maryland Heights and use the entries gym all day for $18. If you want to use bouldering or other part of gym after doing the wacky wall, you have to pay an extra $18. It's much smaller too. It is clean with nice bathrooms and a gym upstairs, but not sure if your day pass will cover the gym use. I won't return again or refer anyone to this location. Teeny, tiny little gym. The bouldering area is big enough for two people to be on the wall at once at most. That's just sad. Some routes were set on the bouldering area but none were rated. That's kinda sloppy. Honestly - there were maybe 10 people in the entire gym and it felt crowded. Just like their bigger brethren most of their routes are too hard for beginners (I think there was one 5.7 and no 5.6s when I was there). Staff was nice. I dunno, just sort of a meh place. Not worth $449/year until they make some improvements. My suggestions: set more routes, rate the bouldering routes, set some easier routes, and make better use of the space (the whole top area was unmarked and mostly unusable due to lack of holds). read more

I hate to rain on the parade but I had a much better experience at the Upper Limits location off Lindbergh and Page - It is much bigger and has more routes. What really annoyed me here were the colors - they would have black right next to "blue" except the "blue" faded so much that they were the same shades as the black. On one surface there are green and yellow grips but both are supposed to be "yellow". Then if you go to another surface area, they mark two separate routes. Basically the colors were inconsistent and confusing on the lower-difficulty climbs that made the tasks tougher than they should have been. The staffs were nice so no complaints there. read more

This is always something I've always been interested in, but never would have got around to trying....until Groupon. I am so glad I did! I was a little nervous at first, but the beginners class is very helpful, and they don't mind showing you how to tie the ropes over and over and over..... By the time I left there, my hands and shoulders and arms were like jelly. Which is exactly the kind of workout I was looking for. The only reason I did not give this 5 five stars is because I felt there were not enough beginner sections. I would get near the top and not be able to find a hand hold that I felt comfortable using. The best climbing gym in St. Louis. The people are friendly and even if you come alone its easy to find someone to belay you (unless you are a jackass - in which case, prepare to be ignored). There are also three autobelays and plenty of bouldering routes. Some of the routes are quite difficult, but there is plenty for the beginner as well (though at the moment a lot of the routes are 5-9 or above). The classes are pretty good - beginner classes teach you the very basics. People offer advice, but they usually know when to back down as well. The bouldering is pretty good, and there are a couple areas that are dedicated bouldering areas. The upstairs section has some of the more fun puzzles, but often is rented out for parties. Prices are reasonable, and if you want to get a yearly membership the price is best one weekend in late January when they run a special (all year for about $200). If you already have a membership they just tack the months on top of what you have previously paid for. The staff is friendly and helpful, but remember, when they call last climb, they mean it. Don't be surprised if you find them sweeping at you and just letting the tire fragment fly. read more

Awesome staff, clean gym, and friendly climbers - what else could you ask for? My husband and I just started climbing at this gym as we love it! This is our first try at rock climbing and all of the staff and patrons have been incredibly welcoming of us "newbies." We also appreciated Dean's patience, expertise, and help in assisting us with choosing all of our gear. Being so new it could have been really overwhelming but he made great suggestions and let us take our time. It's also great that they let you put on harnesses and hook up to the wall to "test" them out - can't do that on Amazon! Yes it's a bit crowded at times and you may have to wait your turn to climb a specific route (but no different than waiting for a treadmill at the regular gym.) As new climbers, we enjoy that time to watch other, more experienced climbers solve problems on the wall. This is one of the many ways that we've been able to pick up technique. Also, we've met several climbers who are more than happy to give us tips, show us their gear, etc. They have lockers (although I've noticed a lot of people just throw their crap next to the route they're going to climb, not really safe during busy times,) bathrooms, and a changing room/shower. Tip on the lockers: bring your own lock, they charge $1 to use one of theirs. If you're interested, I highly recommend the Groupon for the 2 hour intro class. We took it with my brother back in June and really enjoyed it. It's a great way to get your feet wet and see if rock climbing in a gym is something you'd like without having to invest a lot of time or money. If you're looking to climb here long-term, keep in mind: they also offer a half-price sale on their yearly membership, usually in January. read more

Unfortunately, this is a review from a couple of years ago when I climbed at upper limits for a year. Since then Climb So iLL and Upper Limits West County have surfaced. What I can say from my time at Upper Limits was that safety and fun were always a priority. I remember young children at birthday partys, recreational climbers, and relatively high level climbers all enjoying the facility. The best aspects of the gym were the various routes and community feel of the gym. Members treated everyone as equals and respect was fundamental. One negative aspect of the gym is how tight of a space it is. The routes (although excellent on their own) overlapped with another and this created some bumping on falls during busier times of the day. People never got hostile over this inconvenience, but it was visibly irritating. Some areas I think the gym could improve would include: -better deals on gear for members (rock climbing gear is expensive!) -an annual (semi-annual, etc) charity fundraiser; given Upper Limits has a great community vibe already and has expanded to three locations (three!) it would be nice to give back to the growing downtown St. Louis. -'rock climbing inspired' work out stations upstairs. The finger grip pull up bar is nice. But there are so many other options I have seen at gyms in California that take up little space and improve the climbers experience. read more

As if I didn't already have too many hobbies... I'll now add rock climbing at Upper Limits as one of them. The staff is very professional and willing to be as informative and patient as possible to new climbers, ensuring safety. Note: Pay attention in the introductory class. No one wants to be dropped. After my class, I rented equipment to start climbing and belaying. I found it to be a great anaerobic workout and found myself pretty sore after a few trips to the top. There's an amazing subculture there, willing to accept newcomers. The scene is pretty informative on questions you may ask. However, on a busy night, be prepared to wait in line. read more

I love Upper Limits Climbing Gym for many many MANY reasons. First, the downtown gym has a lot of routes that are set by creative climbers so there is always something new and interesting to climb. Second, the employees are so friendly and helpful, they make it a very enjoyable place to visit. Third, the classes are very informative and they have taught me how to become a better climber. Fourth, the gym is frequented by many talented climbers, which means I have the opportunity to see how others climb routes and learn technique by watching them. Since I first started climbing at Upper Limits last September, I've become a huge fan and I go a couple of times each week. The gym is a little small which can be frustrating at busy times, but I would recommend climbing at less busy times-- like Tuesday or Friday nights and weekend mornings. They also offer Groupon deals, student prices, and membership discounts-- so it is easy to get a great deal! read more

I am upgrading my review after moving out of STL to North Carolina. I have visited both Triangle Rock Club locations (TRC is supposed to be the best climbing gym in the Carolinas) and wow, do I ever miss Upper Limits. My previous comments apply, but things that I didn't appreciate as much before: - the incredibly convenient location, near Metrolink - the wall height and selection for top rope - the 1/2 price membership sale - the placement of the birthday party area upstairs, where kids can have fun without disturbing regular climbers - the mix of pumpy and thinker routes I guess some of these things are luck more than good service, but going to another gym really makes some of UL's strengths clear. read more

i was here last night... apparently the only place you can climb indoors in st. louis. it was a bit cramped with so many ppl, but it wasnt considered "busy" compared to other nights. when i saw the place on google street view, i thought it was the entire building. but granted, the climbing places i come from are the ones in the SF bay area (california). this place reminds me of touchstone in san jose (now shut down) because of the small facility. there were plenty of lead climbers last night and a few bouldering people. probably a total of 8-10 top ropping routes (down stairs). i didnt visit the upstairs area, which looked a bit smaller. the problem i have with this place on top of it being tiny as it is, is that the lead climbing routes go right across all of the bouldering routes. there's a lot of waiting and cramped spaces... people are almost shoulder-to-shoulder. the first photo that was posted basically is the size of the gym. there's really not much else to it. the bouldering ppl need to stick to the grey areas (policy) and the rest of the red is open to top roping / lead climbing. the pic was taking from the balcony of the 2nd floor with the front of the gym at the back of the pic. the 2nd pic is taken from the front. remember, on a usual night, it's fairly stuffed with ppl along this corridor plus there is a "no loose-chalk" policy i'm ok with the "no bare feet" policy they had a comp a couple wks ago but none of the problems were rated on the V scale... just by comp points. update them!! Bouldering Ratings (these were my guesses for ratings): "R's" (recreational) = V0 to V2 "I's" (intermediate) = V2+ to V3 "A's" (advanced) = V3+ to V4+ "E's" (expert) = V5 and up the problems werent tremendously difficult, but there were a lot of holds i had never seen in a rock gym. maybe it's a midwest thing btw, when bouldering there, assume the arete is OFF unless otherwise stated. i had to ask. where i climb back at home, arete is always on, unless otherwise stated (exact opposite) but here are the pros: friendly, friendly staff. good quality holds (not grungy or greasy). challenging problems, and a few good ppl who climb and know betas. i love that there's a dedicated parking area underneath the fwy too. people have said it's hard to find, but it's not that bad if you map it out. i had gps so i cant complain. read more

Well, this review is mostly for the Beginner Class as that is my experience thus far at Upper Limits. I am not a "rock climbing aficionado"...in fact I am not very athletic and terrified of heights, two things which really inhibit ones ambition for rock climbing! However, they had a Groupon featured a few weeks back and the boy is a fan so we decided to purchase said Groupon and make a date out of the class. I walked in and was greeted by the towering walls and the avid climbers with all their own gear and I immediately thought...WTH have I gotten myself into. My stomach sank and I wanted to go home ASAP! We had the reservations and the other half was ready to go so I sucked it up and put my brave face on! Well I am glad I did! Our class was taught by Gina with help from John. Boy were these guys great! Gina was friendly in a quiet way but she knew her stuff! Most importantly she knew her stuff as well as how to explain it to someone who knows as much about rock climbing as they do nano-physics....ahem, NOTHING at all! Being a teacher I like cutesy ways to remember important things and Gina's knot tying will never be forgotten! Once you have Bob the alien you choke him and poke him in the eye!!!!! (Yes, this sounds weird, but my figure 8 knots are that of a pro thank to Gina and her alien friends!) She really worked through each step and made sure everyone had it before moving on, this is where John was a big help so they could check and help more quickly than just Gina alone. We learned the basics of climbing in the top rope style and how to belay in the same style. We were then tested to make sure we had it down so we could then explore the facility on our own with out instructors. I felt like I really learned something, rather than just being shown and forgotten. I do not feel I got any better with the actual climbing, but I need to work up some strength and ability t go more than 5 feet off the ground! Only complaints: They used the balcony area for class, which I thought would be great since it was so noisy below...but then other climbers also used the balcony, making it noisy up there and at times hard to hear the instructor. We didn't get the rock climbing shoes until after the class...they made a world of difference, but after 2 hours of slipping in my Nikes, my arms were too tired to give the shoes a good go! I think the class should get the shoes as well! I will definitely be using my coupon I got to go back and try it again...now that I "know the ropes!" read more

This is a great location for people who work with youth. I have been there twice with two very different groups of kids and both times were wonderful. The group programs and team building exercises are unique and fun, especially for kids who don't get to do much outside of the classroom. What I really appreciated was that I went there with a very strict budget and they helped to really get the most bang for my buck. This is a great facility. The padded foamy floors seem kind of unnecessary but are a nice addition for those who feel scared of falling 50 feet. There are multiple self belays so even it is perfectly fine to go by yourself sometime. The first climbing gym I've been to that's set up like a fitness centre where it would make a lot of sense (cost wise) to be a member. I would go back and do one of their courses to learn how to belay so I could use more of the many climbs they have to offer. read more

Im SO frustrated with this place! I was so excited about trying it when I found the groupon for a class. I quickly took advantage of the offer and bought classes for my husband and I. Now, unfortunately I can't even get in because their classes are ALWAYS full unless you can schedule it weeks out and I can't do that because we have two children and don't know if we have a sitter for that day. Plus, even if we try for that day and for some reason our sitter is unavailable and we have to reschedule we automatically lose our deposit! Ive tried to tell the people over the phone my dilema and they could obviously care less. Horrible customer service--they can't wait to get you off the phone and don't care if they get your business or not. Im guess Im just out my money. read more

Really my only complaint about this place is that I drove past it 3 times before finally figuring out where it was...but hey, it was dark and I'd never been before! Went on a Friday night when I got a wild hair to do something random and had a real good time with my 90 minutes of scrambling up walls. I stuck to the beginner courses and those are still fun and challenging even for a more athletic person. The auto-belay systems make going by yourself no big concern, and the staff was friendly and helpful even though it was pretty busy at the time. After the four day weekend thanks to the ice storm and the holiday, I needed to get out of the house with the kids and have them burn some energy. A friend had recently gone here and I decided to try it out. While there are a few Upper Limits locations in St. Louis, this location has "Wacky Walls" which is a kids climbing area. I have an 8 year old and a 4 year old. You reserve a time online which is great because only so many people are in the room and it never feels too crowded. I also did their safety waivers online to make it easier (fill out one for yourself too). I showed up about 15 minutes before our reserved time and the kids got wristbands and harnesses. "Wacky Walls" is a private room - kids can't easily get out and no one else can get in although people can watch from the door and windows. They give you an orientation but there were two employees in the room the whole hour and they were very helpful. I think my 8 year old had a little bit more fun than my 4 year old - he's so light that I think the safety rope and the harness made him feel like he was going to get tossed around into the sky. But it was a lot of fun - not overwhelming or crazy at all. I will absolutely be back. read more

Go to the Maryland Heights location. They are not friendly or helpful. The kid area is often closed off for parties. I am writing this review on behalf of my husband who has take our kids to this location twice. We live in Chesterfield but are happier with the Maryland Heights location and Climb so Ill downtown. read more

I fell while bouldering and there was no padding, so I shattered my elbow and fractured my ankle, so I wouldn't recommend this place.

A good place to take an introductory class with someone else on indoor rockwall climbing. Learn the basics, belaying, etc. then challenge yourself to climb to the top of the 20' beginner area. There's a larger branch division in Bloomington, if you want to climb silos. read more

Friendly staff, ample top-roping and enough bouldering to keep a person occupied for a little while. This facility would be better if it were magically twice as big, but since that's impossible, let's just say that it's easier to meet someone new in an overcrowded gym. I thought the routes were well-established and challenging in a way that made sense. Better lighting and refreshed marking tape in the downstairs bouldering areas would be helpful. read more

I was told this would be a good place for 4 year olds. I paid $36 dollars for the kids to walk around for 5 mins only to realize they are too little. Was not offered a refund. Waste of money. read more
