Came here for an early dinner. It's right off the freeway. There was no one in the main dining room and usually that's a bad sign. But not here.....The food was excellent. We ordered some guac and chips and ceviche for the table. Ceviche was fresh and tasty. For entrees I ordered the seafood stew which was delicious. A lot of seafood. My husband got the large shrimp plate w chipotle sauce which was also good. Someone else in my party ordered the octopus which I'm told tasted very good. One of the few restaurants that had a range of desserts. They had chocolate cake, flan and tres leches. The flan was the best by far. The carafe of margaritas were pretty large. Oscar &Lalo is considered an institution to some. They have been around since about 1980. Originally located in the east side of the 307 on beach until a hurricane destroyed it. They now have a beautiful space on the west side of the the highway about half way from Akumal to Tulum. The restaurant is clean and open. They a a nice garden area courtyard as well. The staff is attentive and efficient. Virginia the hostess was absolutely amazing and friendly. Her family has owned the business for decades. Our waiter was Alfredo who was excellent. All the food was well prepared and presented nicely. Everything we had was delicious. It's definitely aimed a bit more for the North American palette but this does not mean it wasn't really good because it was. Cocktails were made with fresh fruit juices and were top notch. I highly recommend Oscar & Lalo to anyone who is staying in the area or passing by to or from Tulum. read more

This spot was a 3 min drive from where we stayed and came in two days in a row.they asked if we had reservations both times with only one couple dining each time so that was strange but they didn't seem to have much staff. For dinner we ate inside and ordered the shrimp enchiladas with mole and the guajillo seafood dish. Both were good with substantial amount of food. Came back the next day for lunch, sat outside this time and ordered the guacamole which of course tasted so fresh and they gave us extra chips on the side. I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a plain quesadilla which is apparently not the menu anymore but they were kind enough to make it for me. I did try the cochinito pibil, slow roasted pork, and that was very flavorful! The back patio is cute so I would try to sit there and be sure to check out the cantina. read more

This is a place designed to relieve tourists of their cash. Chances are, your card will not work and you'll have to pony up pesos. A lot of them. So be prepared. The food is okay, and pretty. The drinks are sweet, over-iced and REALLY expensive. The service is not bad, by local standards (meaning: it's somewhat less obvious that they hate you). The prices are American, meaning an appetizer, salad, and two moderate entrees plus a few drinks will set you back the equivalent of an American c-note, easy. The music is "mexican con queso". And very loud. So basically, it's like an outdoor Azteca in Seattle but with better food. Oh: and they don't show you the prices on the menu. Yep. Have fun, now, gringo! Order up! So if you're nostalgic for the wasteful decadence of mediocre, over-priced restaurants in the States, but still want to eat Mexican food and be despised, laughed at, ripped-off, and eaten alive by parasites in traditional Yucatán style, belly-up and tuck in. read more

Magnificent dining experience! Service by Alfredo was amazing and the selections were the best this week. Simple yet scrumptious describes the cheese enchiladas- the Mole' sauce was on point with just the right amount of spice. The Lala special for one was plenty for us two! We substituted the whole fried fish and it was very fresh and delicious. The lobster tasted as if was brought in today. The calamari was tender and great but ket me not forget the skewer with shrimp- holy moly! Three great sauces accentuated the flavors. Lastly the rice was a star on its own.... They prepare it all mixed together , like a ceviche, with cilantro and avocado and who knows what else they throw in there and who cares it is delicious! We also had a yummy mixed food ceviche. Our entree was "Lalo's Special" which had lobster, shrimp, calamari, fish fillet and chicken fajitas. My boyfriend does not eat chicken so they substituted the chicken for more fish. Super fresh and quite a generous portion. One of my son's had Fire Grilled skirt steak which was tender and juicy. The other had the grilled jumbo shrimp with butter and garlic. What more can I say, my memories of this place are magical. We happened upon the restaurant's website while searching desperately for a wedding planner who could help us plan a "non-cookie-cutter-beach" wedding in Mexico, and that's when we heard back from our wedding angel, Virginia, and chose O&L's as our wedding venue for our group of 18. Virginia planned every detail down to a tee- from scouting a beach for our location in Tankah Bay, planning tours for our guests, arranging transportation to-and-from the ceremony, decorating the beautiful beach, easing my worried mind while we planned a destination wedding in a destination I had never been, and making one incredible wedding day all the way into the evening. If you are in the area or anywhere close, this is a must stop to try their menu items- and it's a gorgeous, whimsical, spirited location- from walking in over a koi fish stream, buddha statue greeting you, beautiful stone interiors for indoor dining, or dine in the lush gardens under a thematic palapa- you'll realize a gorgeous restaurant in the jungle. The food.is.just.delicious... I will never forget the octopus ceviche. I loved drinking fresh coconut water in the afternoon during lunch, and the whole crispy fish was also a highlight of our trip. During our wedding dinner, our guests ordered from the menu and the dishes came out steadily, regardless of our group size and individualized orders- I was especially impressed- as was our entire wedding party- at their attention to flavor and detail when the kitchen was getting slammed with orders. I highly recommend making a stop in for lunch on your first day traveling, arrange a door-to-door tour to zipline/kayak/visit an Aztec village followed by a quiet local cenote swim, finished with a fresh lunch here and then do dinner the next night, as well- actually you may just be coming back and back and back and back!! Came her back in July for a dinner with a group of girlfriends on our trip to Mexico. I think we got there at about 8pm and the restaurant was pretty empty. There was one other couple there and then us. We didn't mind because the food came out quick! When we spoke to the server she let us know that it's usually busier during the day. I wish I got pictures of the food but I was probably to busy stuffing my face. The food was fresh and full of flavor. I had a shrimp dish but I can't temper the name of the dish. I was really disappointed after reading the many 5 star reviews for this restaurant. The atmosphere was nice but the food was beyond underwhelming bordering on inedible. We ordered the guacamole and ceviche as appetizers. The guac was good but the ceviche was rubbery and bland. For main dishes we ordered the steak (all of them were overcooked) and the shrimp (overcooked and bland) and the chicken (okay, pretty bland but better than the other dishes). Dessert was the most disappointing part of the meal - fried banana was greasy and inedible, tres leches and pies were a odd consistency. The servers were nice and friendly. They took our order, then the owner Virginia came by and asked us each individually what we ordered yet somehow they still brought out the wrong dishes. I'm rating it 2 stars instead of 1 because the watermelon aguafresca was delicious and I liked the atmosphere. read more

Comfortable atmosphere, wonderful service, excellent cocktails - I highly recommend the Chia Margarita if you want to try something beyond the regular. Our group of 12 was seated at a large round table which was much nicer than the usual long rectangle. As you can see from the pics the presentation is beautiful and the dishes tasted even better. We had this Mayan seasoned falling of the bone chicken, enchiladas with mole and the pulled pork. Everyone was happy with their choice. We also had starters. Oscar and Layla was a wonderful stop along the 307 Highway between Playa, Del Carmen and Tulum. We arrived soon after they open and were the first customers so we had a legally time to enjoy the ambience and presentation of the food. Christmas and Christmas Eve Oscar & Lalo was a fantastic Christmas gift to ourselves. I wait all year to come back to one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. I honestly think about their Yucatán chicken all year long and have searched high and low for something close to it back in the states. It has a touch of achiote and is the perfect balance of a little spice with savory onions and fresh ingredients. I'm back this afternoon and had the Veracruz fish...Wow! If there is a better fish dish in the area, I have not found one. The olive tapenade and onion with a touch of lime was expertly balanced and the fresh fish tasted like it had been caught this morning. We also tried Oscar's Special. It's lobster, shrimp, and calamari with sides of plantains, mixed vegetables and rice. Well seasoned and perfectly done to show off the mix of seafood flavors! The owner came and checked on us regularly and the staff makes us feel like family. We always feel welcomed and never rushed and the service is fantastic. We had an absolutely perfect meal at Oscar y Lalo tonight. We started with the shrimp quesadilla which was delicious; the shrimp were plump and fresh and the cheese was reminiscent of fresh mozzarella. I ordered the diabla fish fillet. Our server, who was so kind and gracious all night, politely suggested that I might be overwhelmed by the level of heat in the diabla sauce. I heeded his advice to have the sauce served on the side, and I was so glad I did! It is incredibly spicy but has a great flavor. I appreciated being able to moderate how much sauce went onto each bite. The fish filet came with skillet-fried sliced plantains (delicious), rice, and grilled zucchini. My husband had the coconut shrimp which were delectable. The ratio of batter to shrimp was perfect, and the shredded coconut tasted so sweet and fresh. We were stuffed by the end of our meal but our server convinced us to try the tres leches cake which had just been made today in-house. We agreed it is one of the best desserts we have ever had. I should also mention I had the watermelon margarita. It was gigantic and refreshing. We can't wait to return to Oscar y Lalo. It is one of the very best meals we have had. We had our family Christmas dinner here tonight. It was a fantastic experience as well as a meal. The holiday menu was great and even my kids, that had kinda turned up their noses at the choices originally, all loved it. My youngest even cleaned 3 of his 4 plates. I cannot say enough good things about the food. What happened after, Victoria and us, may never forget. My daughter had a pepper on her plate, and told our oldest son to try it. Turns out it was a habanero and made him puke. I say this because she was amazing and even rubbed his back while he was getting sick. I think we all kind of felt like family after and felt horrible that it happened. Next time we come back to visit Akumal, we will come back to Oscar & Lalo's. read more

Food has an authentic comfort with great flavor and presentation. Highly recommend Chicken with Mole and the octopus. Along with the Pibil. This is my favorite restaurant in Tulum. If you're able to come in during the day grab a table outside. The ambience and the foliage really add to the experience. I had the pescado (fish) a la plancha with beans and rice, plantains with (condensed milk that you have to request but so delicious), and the cucumber salad (fresh and wonderful as well). This place is currently struggling, yet the owner seems to be in denial. We drove past all week and it looked closed. No cars, no lights, no one answers the phones. We were able to place a reservation through What's App with the owner who insisted they were open for business and doing well. We were willing to give it a try. Upon arrival we were led to the garden and they had arranged a lovely set up, however we noticed they had no other guests in the restaurant which seemed strange for a Friday night. Then it happened, like a scene from a movie, after placing our drink orders, the power went out to the entire restaurant. We were told to use the flashlights on our phones to read the menu (which we had to share because they didn't have enough?!) We waited patiently for the return of power but after at least 20 min we realized it wasn't coming back on. The owner was apologetic and admitted to having power and computer issues, but said it was all of Tulum and not just her establishment. However we had been to many places around all week and had no such issues. I don't know what is going on here or how they plan to cook food with no steady power...The bugs are also ferocious and the drinks are over priced and mediocre. Stay away from this place! read more

We did a trip into Tulum with some friends we met at our resort and found Oscar & Lalo by cross referencing searches on Trip Advisor, Google search and here on Yelp. We searched for seafood and came up with this gem. This place has so much appeal. From the delicious food and drinks, to the amazing garden setting (we were here at night and the lighting is so beautiful) to the incredible staff. I had the Whole Grouper which was cooked to perfection. Heather LOVED the cheese stuffed poblano and chicken enchiladas. We shared the mixed ceviche to start... we love ceviche and this was the best we've ever had. The octopus was my favourite. A tad off the beaten path but worth searching out. Unfortunately dinner was a disappointment. When we arrived there were a total of three tables but neither the bartender or waiters seated us. Instead we were told to wait and that there were many people. Service continued to be bad from then on. The owner who apparantley inherited the restaurant from her father was spending time at our table telling stories and doing the waiters job. She should really focus on managing instead of serving. We were hopeful the food would make up for the service but it did not. I had the pulled pork which was way too salty. Out of the six dishes we had the mole enchiladas was the only dish that was decent. Wish the restaurant god luck in stepping up there game but this was a lousy experience for us. read more

Additionally, we had the passion fruit and lime margaritas. EVERYTHING AND I MEAN EVERYTHING was so delicious. The margaritas were so eloquent, the ceviche simple and perfected, the octopus deep with flavor and the coconut shrimp fried and sweet... just seriously a flavor bomb in your mouth on every front. You MUST go to Oscar y Lalo while in Riveria Maya. MUST! While staying for our destination wedding someone recommended Oscar y Lalo for ceviche, which is our favorite. After spending the morning at the ruins and in a cenote we decided to not only stop and get out of the rain but also to try the legendary ceviche. The space is incredibly cool and cozy. The kind of space you could spend the whole day drinking amazing margaritas and eating the delicious food. There are multiple places to sit and relax. There are even hammocks which are great for post margarita naps -just ask my aunt! We ordered the ceviche sampler and the tacos to split as well as passionfruit margaritas. The chips and salsa to start was a bit American style but oh my!so good. I would buy those chips if they sold them. Each of the flavors of ceviche were interesting on their own but I think the group favorite was the mango - very unique! The tacos were delectable and full of flavor. The margaritas were some of the best I've ever had. They were smooth yet strong. Not sure how anyone could have more than one because wowza they were strong. We were looking for a bite to eat after snorkeling in a few cenotes and found this place on Yelp. Honestly, we weren't expecting much, despite the positive reviews, but EVERYTHING we had was nothing short of fantastic. We ordered ceviche, a whole fish, and a fish fillet (and, of course, beer!). The food was delicious - moist, tender, and clearly fresh. The food was so good, we had to order dessert, too! We couldn't decide between the chocolate cake and the coconut ice cream, so we told the waitress to surprise us. She brought us some cake to sample and a half a coconut shell filled with coconut ice cream. I have a discerning tongue where desserts are concerned, and neither disappointed! They were outstanding.
