The staff is working really hard here for you to be happy, and the food is really very good...quesadillas and salad to start, a variety of tacos for dinner. But sometimes you gotta be ready to adjust to the fact that you might be seated under scaffolding, and there is a table of 6 adults to your left who aren't just having a good time at 630pm, they got there for brunch and are loaded and loud! Oh well, once they spilled a strawberry margarita all over themselves, they were served a check and left. Things were far more pleasant after that, accepting that Amsterdam Avenue on a summer Saturday night is going to include fire trucks, ambulances, and loud hot rods going by with sound systems that force you to cease conversation. It has been awhile since I have had the chance to dine at OSO. I am a creature of habit and tend to always order the same things. Tonight I switched it up and I tried the Esquites which had just the right amount of spice and the Consome De Birria. The Consome could have used a little more spice but was still enjoyable. I wanted to give this place (5) stars but I couldn't, I couldn't give it (3) stars because the service was great. Even though my waitress spilled water all over my table, she was sweet and kind and I know she wanted the experience to be a good one. Ok moving on, I had a sample of almost everything on the menu. The shrimp taco was solid, the taco Cauliflor was ok, tasted just like cauliflower drenched in sauce, I don't eat pork but my partner enjoyed his al pastor taco, I enjoyed the fish taco, very nice flavor and a light white grilled fish, we also had the squid which was in a nice saucy dish with oranges, different yet flavorful.. ok noW down to the Guacamole amole and Chips, I was underwhelmed by the Guacamole, I didn't finish it, they are doing something wrong, when I saw the consistency I knew it wouldn't be good, hey I'm born and raised in California I know Guacamole and I did take into consideration that it's NY but tot doesn't take much to make good guacamole, I feel they put some sort of citric acid in the guacamole to keep the color or something that they put in packaged guac.. it was not tasty, and I didn't finish it. In a city like New York I expect a certain level of hospitality and professionalism. Oso did not meet my standards. I was meeting two friends at the restaurant--they arrived before me. The hostess was rude and confrontational when I explained that I was meeting a group that had already been seated. She seemed alarmed and bewildered by the fact that I wanted to search for my dinner guests and join them for fellowship. Once seated, we requested a larger table. Our request was met with such an indignant reaction that I immediately left the restaurant. I am sure the food is good; but, I do not spend money in establishments with hostile environments. Went here for brunch with someone and was amazed at the quality of the food. I was told that it was difficult to find good Mexican food in NYC and after having gone to CDMX last year, I can attest to that. This place hits the spot with their strong, delicious drinks and great torta de milanesa. I liked their selection of drinks that has not only téquila but also mezcal. We started dinner with happy hour margaritas for $8 that were delicious and chips with guacamole. My lady had the Verde Pasole and shrimp taco. I went with the Torta De Carnita -- both excellent dishes. You just want to try everything. I like that the staff is so pleasant, greet you at the door and acknowledging you when you leave. Came for brunch. Elote was great and my mole and carnitas tacos were tasty, though the carnitas one cold, which was a little off-putting. I asked the waiter if it was supposed to be served like that and he said yes, which is fine but maybe just specify on the menu, especially since all of the other tacos were hot? Whoa. Tacos are MUY MUY BUENO. House made corn tortillas to order. Well balance of flavors and combinations on each taco. We opted for the fish and shrimp tacos, the quesadilla, guacamole, and two margaritas. Delicious. Atmosphere is cool low-key. ***So I was craving more and we returned the next day for more tacos and to try the Octopus dish they have on the menu. And for the sangria of course. We had more fish/shrimp tacos, the "mole" taco which was tender chicken (super yum). The octopus dish was very good.. but I wish there would have been more octopus on the plate. After a long 6 day work week on the last day we decided to go in search of a good margarita. So we decided to give a local spot a try and "oso" was first on the recommendation list. From the door there were warm smiles and greetings from the hostess and waitresses. This small and stylish spot gives you somewhat of a traditional Mexican feel more so from the food then the decor. Which is great in the diversity of day verses night life. I didn't come for the food though I am a big taco lover, but I couldn't resist giving something a try so I went with the elote and it was delicious. And my coworkers went to town on there tacos so i assume they were good as well. Finding good Mexican can be a struggle so when finding something local that's good you usually stick to what you know. So with that drinks were to first focus and I must say the margaritas were great. At first I felt shorted being that our drinks were heavy on ice and not filled to at least to the rim of salt. But instead of complaining I ordered another round but with light ice... still a well made margarita but now even lower. So on the third round I tapped out, which was funny being that on the third round my co workers cup were filled to the rim lol !! So with a woman's touch my co worker told them I wasn't pleased with my drink, which led to great conversation about there drinks, other local businesses and the community. Instantly that warm convo put me at ease and I even made a new friend (shouts to Mandy). Not only that she came back with a round of shots and gave us a discount on the bill. It's amazing what good food and conversation can do for us in this time of change and growth in our community. And I'm thankful for people that are considerate and aware, especially when being a service to the people. I like starting off my reviews of Mexican restaurants with a recap of the chips and guacamole situation. The chips are INCREDIBLE, thick enough to withstand a hefty scoop of guacamole and very salty. In my opinion the guacamole fell short, it was lacking in flavor, however I'd still order it if I returned to Oso since a Mexican meal is incomplete without it. The overall vibe of Oso is trendy but definitely not obnoxious. You can expect a nice mix of Mexican staples (mix and match tacos, quesadillas) along with specialty plates and salads. NYC is notorious for having subpar Mexican food, but Oso seems to be giving it their all to change that trend. Stumbled across this adorable and delicious spot on a random Yelp search and am so glad we stopped in. The decor is fun without being cheesy, tasteful but not stuffy. They've hit the sweet spot of chill yet charming. The servers are all attentive and friendly, which adds to the ambience. Ample seating for both small and large groups. Two bar areas for solo diners: one by the bar itself and another by the open-air kitchen so you can ham it up with the executive chef. The food is solidly satisfying. I lived in south Texas for seven years so I know a good taco when I see one. Corn tortillas all made by hand, fresh on site (I watched the woman pressing the dough then cooking them up on the flat top). We had the al pastor & pescado - DELISH. The head chef cooks up the fish when you order it, so it's fresh & succulent when it arrives at your table. The garnishes are all well thought out and actually *enhance* the taco's flavor, instead of only being pretty for instagram but adding nothing to the eating experience. The al pastor is well-seasoned and properly charred, so it's juicy and smoky and all things happy. But the pescado -- don't sleep on that deliciousness! As for drinks, we both had their in-house margarita -- my partner had it plain and I had it spicy. When they say spicy, they mean it! Holy cow, what a delicious kick in the mouth. I like heat so I was down for the ride, but beware if you're feeling unsure. My partner's plain was simple & delicious -- not too sweet, good ratio of mixer to booze. Decided to try to dine locally and came across this restaurant. We went for dinner and the restaurant was three quarters full. Not everything was bad about the experience, but it could have been better. We ordered drinks and still had not come by the time we were ready to order. They took a long time to come and were just about to ask when they arrived. Now for the appetizers we had to ask about those, we ordered the Tamales, and it seemed that they didn't start working on those until we asked (i know because we were sitting next to the kitchen and it is see thru). Felt like the same thing happened with the main course we ordered Carne Asado tacos and the Sea Bass. Kitchen staff had to be told about the fish and it was put on after reminding them. Food was ok, but nothing to truly rave over. Our server didn't really check in on us and truly probably could have gotten a larger bill if they did because we would have ordered more drink since we came during Happy Hour apparently (we didn't know until the bill came). Came here for a cozy birthday celebration for my boyfriend because it's in our neighborhood and right near his school (also next door is a great coffee shop called Filtered!). Boy did Oso not disappoint! We started with cocktails -- I had the guava margarita and he had Michelle's Cartel (cucumber vodka, dolin blanc, mint, elderflower, lime). Both were fantastic but my margarita was supposedly happy hour price but didn't appear so on our bill, even though we ordered before happy hour was over :( The chips and salsa (free) are so addicting and completely delicious. We had so many refills. We started with the elote, which was flavorful and a perfect appetizer. Loved the chili and chipotle aioli -- classic but still fun. Next, we got a few tacos: barbacoa, al pastor, and the fish of the day (porgy I think). SO good. Definitely on the smaller side but would be amazing on their own even not as semi-appetizers. My favorite was the barbacoa. Super juicy. We split the octopus which was literally incredible. Tender with mind blowing flavor. The potatoes were great and the mandarin added such a bright taste. Really great. For desert we got the Mexican brownie, which was definitely the lowest point of the meal (even though they put a candle in it for my boyfriend's birthday!). The flavors were good (spicy, and the horchata ice cream tasted like horchata!), but the brownie was super dry and crumbly. The space is so cool -- modern like Chipotle but much sleeker and more romantic. It almost reminded me of a few modern upscale restaurants I visited in Paris. I love that Harlem has these hip spots. We love our deli sandwiches but sometimes it's nice to go all out near home! I probably won't be here every week because it does get pretty pricey, but for drinks and tacos alone, it's 100% worth it. read more

I write this hoping I can eventually come back and update the review. I order from Oso pretty regularly but recently the food has changed and not for the better. The esquites they used to have were SO good but now they have elotes and they're just not great for some reason. They also changed the rice and beans and again, not for the better. This week I decided to try something new and ordered the $23 enchiladas and they were so bland. The chicken and verde sauce had no flavor at all. The portion size was big but I didn't eat even half of them before throwing away and spent way too much money on them. I went here with three friends. We sat on the bar stools and narrow table. After awhile, I had to stand as the stool became too uncomfortable. Overall, I liked the food. I had a tongue taco and a pork taco. Lots of meat and good seasoning. Everything is ala carte which is sorta annoying. When we found out it was happy hour, we ordered some margaritas and 3 of the 4 appetizers. Our drinks arrived as we finished making the difficult decision as to which tacos to order. The margarita I had was refreshing and not too sweet. The first of the apps we ordered, guacamole, came quickly. Not only was it good, but the chips were worthy and the salsa they brought with it was so bomb we needed a refill. The tamales and elote were soon to follow and did not disappoint. We commented on how both the elote and salsa that came with the tamales had a nice kick. The tamales were soft and moist with a good amount of filling. The corn was cooked perfectly. Then the tacos. The tortillas were really great, with a nice coarse masa that wasn't too thick but had substance. They were substantial enough to hold up to an eager eater while soft and pliable. The proteins we tried were all quite flavorful and cooked nicely such that they had just the right amount of texture - and there was just enough of any other topping or sauce to enhance without dominating. From the happy hour specials to the music selection and the authenticity of the menu you really can't go wrong, especially if you're a Mexican food lover! The staff is super friendly and attentive, one of my favorite aspects is being able to see the kitchen cook everything fresh in-front of you. Came to check this spot out this past Sunday and went around a time where they were transitioning from brunch to dinner. I'm sure the ambiance livens up at later hours but sometimes is nice to have some chill vibes and be able to hear yourself speak. The attention and service was great. I tried a drink called Michelle's Cartel, very refreshing. I was a bit disappointed that the 2 of 4 tacos I wanted to order were unavailable. The al pastor and the pescado. I went ahead an ordered carnitas, mole, shrimp tacos. I did not like the mole, it was too saucy, seems like the meat was drenched in the mole sauce, the other two were delicious and dessert was prob the bets part. The churros were puffy, flaky and warm... yummy!! They also added a nice gesture and gave us mescal shots that will compliment the dessert, thank you that was appreciated. So I really wanted just a late light bite and went with the beans and rice side with tortillas (my ultimate comfort food). It looks basic and simply but both items were so on par I couldn't ask for anything else. it came with the house chips and salsa.
