We made a reservation for our last night in Venice. Service was alright. Nothing amazing, just typical service. Food was not that memorable. I had the cold pesto spaghetti, which was decent. We also had the seared octopus. The octopus itself was ok, but my party actually really liked the red cabbage that came with it. I also had the tiramisu, but it ended up being too sweet for me by the time I was almost done. Seating is on the canal, but not exactly on it. We got here without a reservation at 7 and was told that we could only be here until 9, as the table was reserved till 9. We ordered an Aperol spritz, with an appetizer platter with fish and cold cuts beautifully laid on polenta, rabbit meat pasta and black pasta with seafood. Nothing great about either entrees the rabbit meat was a bit too salty, portions were medium to small. The appetizer and drink was good not so much the main entrees. Great food, but 1-star for absolutely horrendous service. After seeing this spot recommended on a few "Best of Venice" type lists and guidebooks, we were excited to check it out. We were seated right away around 7:00pm on a Sunday evening, no reservation necessary. The terrace has an excellent view of the Grand Canal, which is no doubt the highlight of dining here. The wine list has a wide selection, many of them very reasonably priced. For food, we went with the onion soup, sliced beef with goat's milk and basil foam, and monkfish cooked in an asparagus, mushroom, and truffle broth, all of which were really well done. On the basis of food quality, we'd absolutely recommend this place as a delicious, centrally-located destination with a uniquely Venice view. But two complaints tanked this experience for us. One, it took our food FOREVER to arrive. After we ordered, our appetizer came in reasonable-ish time, about 20-25 min. After that, it was another hour-plus (!!) before our mains were ready. And sure, service in Italy is on the more lax / leisurely side than in the US, but this was next level inattentiveness. During that time, the waiter never checked on us or kept us updated without us prompting them. Second, when we pointed out that tables seated *after* us had received *the same* dishes earlier, we were rudely rebuffed and in curt fashion informed that some dishes took longer to prepare than others. Did they really mean to tell us that the monkfish and sliced beef took longer to prepare for us than the 2-3 other tables that we saw arrive later, receive these dishes, and depart while we waited? Yes, with no shame whatsoever, they stuck with this lie. Literally as unapologetic and defensive as they could be for bottom-tier service. A few other other English-speaking tables near us even reached out to us to let us know they were similarly appalled at how we were treated; it was a source of mutually enjoyed dark humor. The food is not worth the insult. I've noticed a few other reviews on Tripadvisor comment on perceptions of racism by the staff. Skin tone was definitely the only difference between us and the tables that were served on time and treated with respect, sooo draw your own conclusions. We definitely did. And don't eat here unless you're into shelling out $ to be treated like trash. read more

Amazingly delicious gnocchi! The meat and pesto-type of sauce were so good, it was one of a kind! The burrata was also good and different from the standard pomodoro style we've seen in the south. I really wanted to like Bancogiro but from the start there were issues. When I walked up there were multiple tables open. I took a table for two as I am a solo traveler. Immediately a waiter approached and said it was possible the table was reserved....he would check. The table was fine but then was I there for lunch or just a spritz? I was there for lunch but clearly if you were there for a drink and to relax, they weren't interested. The waiter was incredibly rude and couldn't be bothered so he dumped me off on someone else while he was smiling and pleasant to larger tables. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular for the prices. You really are paying for the location and view of the Grand Canal. I had been here pre-COVID and things were different. Most are very welcoming of tourists returning, but not Bancogiro. Sad to say, I won't return. read more

We walked here from St Marks Square in about 15 min. This location was recommended to us by the hotel bartender, since there are 3 restaurants side by side with patio seating and views of the canal. We ended up sitting in the upstairs room since it was raining off and on all day. The wait staff was very polite and attentive which is always a plus when travelling as a tourist. We started with the cheese platter and preserves, which is always one of my favorites as a cheese lover. We then shared a scallop and bacon skewer with guacamole sauce and smoked eggplant. The citrus in the guacamole and the smokiness of the eggplant was an explosion of flavor in your mouth. Definitely the one dish I would recommend if you go here. It was just an early afternoon snack break while we shared a bottle of champagne, but I would imagine the rest of their dishes are just as delicious. Cheers, happy eating! read more

So was in Venice for a few days and in the spirit of getting re-acquainted with the city's charm. As the trip wound down to a close, I was searching for a quiet and relaxed dinner and my hotel (the Gritti) offered Osteria Bancogiro as one of the proposed options. This place is right near Ponte di Rialto (3 minute walk) and is unassuming as it is located in the square with a few other restaurants next to it. I was hoping to sit outside as it offers a view of the canal but the weather was still a bit frigid so we ended up being seated inside in the upstairs loft area. The Outside spots offered nice views of the canal so a perfect spot for those looking to grab a meal or a drink during a nice warm summer day. The inside was quite charming and quaint offering a beautiful arch like roof which housed around 12 - 14 tables. The folks here all speak English very well as well as French and they were quite friendly throughout the entire meal experience. The prices are middle to higher range with most dishes ranging around the mid teens to the thirties in Euros. The dishes are also not classic Italian dishes so if that is what you are looking for, this may not be the spot you are searching for. I was in the mood for some fusion as I had the opportunity to try classic dishes over the course of Rome and Florence so this was perfect for me. The menu offered some unique appetizers, pastas, meats, and fish dishes. This joint has a nice wine list broken out by regions and there are plenty of options for reasonable priced wine. After a bit of perusal I went with the Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'abruzzo d.o.c which paired well with our meal. They brought out a bag of bread and you are able to order (fee of 2.5 Euros) an Olive Oil if you want. They each offer a distinct taste so you have to choose one or multiple but all for the same price. Since we were in Italy I went for the olive oil and it was delish. We ordered the prosciutto which was quite delicious and their pickled vegetables were well made as well offering a great compliment. I also ordered the deconstructed caprese as the basil ice cream caught my eye as unique. The presentation was absolutely stunning as it was a small dish of basil ice cream and what appeared to be a tomato. The tomato had been deconstructed and been filled with mozerella with the idea to eat a piece of the tomato/mozerella with some of the basil ice cream. An absolute crowd pleaser and truly unique and wish I could have had more of that basil ice cream. Really well executed and unique dish. Ordered two pasta dishes with one being the Fusilli carbonara as well as the gnocchi. The Fusilli noodles were cooked well (al dente) however there were a few noodles in there that were a bit raw which is a shame but the ingredients were delicious and fresh. The gnocchi was cooked really well and the meat paired with it was delicious with the side sauces and presentation being spot on. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu which was simple/classic and delicious. A perfect way to end the meal. All in all, this is a great Italian fusion -esque place and certainly a nice intimate dinner amidst the touristy traps that fill the streets of venice. This joint offered a nice reprieve from the chaos outside and with well executed dishes. Okay, I was NOT in a good mood when I arrived at Osteria Bancogiro. We had just walked from our hotel in the wind and rain and I was tired and over it all. But! This meal turned it all around for me and I left in the very best of moods. They took us upstairs where only a few other tables were seated, but it still had a nice romantic feel and the service was lovely. We started with their very inventive take on a caprese salad and whoa! There were freeze dried tomatoes, a lettuce sauce and a little cup of tomato-flavored gelatin. My husband was unsure but I loved it! Plus the cheese was delicious! For dinner, my husband had... guys, I don't even remember to be honest because I was too busy swooning over my parchment-steamed fish dish! Our server set it down in front of me and proceeded to cut it open in front of me, it was truly delightful. Every bite was just perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. This was certainly one of the best things I ate in all of Italy. Ended with the tiramisu and it was wonderful. I think they have seating out near the water when it isn't windy and raining, so I do wish we'd been able to enjoy that, but I also have zero regrets because this meal was perfect! read more

Amazing restaurant in a sea of touristy places near Rialto. Bacogiro is situated along with a handful of restaurants facing the grand canal so make sure to grab a seat right in front of the correct storefront. The location is quite nice because it isn't thronged with tourists because it's the less popular side of the Rialto bridge. Fresh pasta, excellent second courses, and a good wine selection. Everything we ate here was expertly prepared. We had the gnocchi and ginger pasta (ridiculously good) to start. The Venetian-style cod is also a wonderful, as was the veal cheek. We didn't have dessert because we were so full afterwards. The service at this restaurant was excellent as well, with attentive waiters that are accommodating to one's best broken Italian (they speak English well). All in all, with two pastas, two second courses, and a bottle of wine we spent about €100, so this is not a cheap spot, but I found it to be well worth the money. This place was different. We sat outside for dinner. Lovely spot tucked back along a canal. Never saw the inside, which was packed and had an American-style lounge singer playing all the hits. It sounded like people were having a blast in there, and the music was nice for sitting outside. The pictures of food and the menus on yelp are all old. They must change the menu often, because there wasn't a single item that was the same. With that being said, the menu was not what we were expecting and there were only a couple things that looked good to us. They didn't have a lot of classic Italian dishes, but more Italian fusion. Dishes with soy sauce, or other ingredients you wouldn't expect. The food was good. But expensive. My biggest complaint is that both of our dishes were very salty. My husbands chicken, which was salty to begin with, then had salt sprinkled all over the plate. My pasta was cooked extremely al dente, more than you would want. And again, very salty. I probably wouldn't return for dinner, but drinks and cicchetti on the patio would be fun. read more

We came here for some quick bites to eat. We looked at the spread of finger foods exhibited at the counter. My wife and I selected a nice mix of cheese, meats, and fish on baguette slices. Afterwards, we tried to look for somewhere to sit but ended up standing up. There is very limited seating which is a little bit of a drag. Closer to four by Venetian standards, definitely 3 by the standards of NYC or any other Italian city where there are actually locals. You can sit outside on a canal in an area that doesn't get much foot traffic, which is beautiful. The wine selections by the glass are great, and the wine list is extensive, so have fun with that. The food is fine... the bread is the standard frozen variety... the mozzarella appetizer we got was meh. We also got two pastas: a squid ink pasta and gnocchi with some sort of wintery meat (was it rabbit? I can't remember; it was not memorable). The squid ink pasta was absolutely fine and definitely more flavorful than the gnocchi. The gnocchi was so underwhelming, between the lack of flavor in the sauce and the meat. We got good and drunk and had a nice time eating in the candlelight on the canal sans tourists, so that's a big deal in Venice, but don't expect to be blown away by great food. read more

Hmmmm... great prices, great wine, and great food. This place had our favorite Cicchetti (kind of like tapas in España) of all of the bacari we visited while in Venezia. Do yourself a favor when you are in Venice, steer clear of the joints that are aimed at ripping off tourists, and frequent these joints, especially Bancogiro. Eager to try local specialties, my friend and I asked our (cute!) waiter for recommendations, including a Veneto wine. We were especially pleased by the antipasti: burned octopus with black rice, beans & celeriac and king prawns with leek, pistachio and goji berries with sweet-and-sour sauce. We also enjoyed the traditional Venetian cuttlefish served in a sauce of its own black ink. We were a little disappointed that despite our canal-front view, the neighborhood seemed eerily still by 9:00 at night--probably not atypical in a town dominated by tourists. Really outstanding. The food is excellent and inexpensive, and the wine selection is reasonable. Located close to the Rialto bridge, it's got a nice view and is more peaceful than the crowded side of the canal. Great for a romantic dinner though we did see several families here too. I had a fettuccine with eggplant and squid that was amazing. My seabass was solid but my wife's cod was the dish of the meal. Also, don't miss the tiramisu - a nice take with an almost creme brule texture and a tiramusi crumble on top. The waitstaff was amazing, they saw there there was a massive thunderstorm rolling in and they moved us all inside, accommodating a very cull patio at a moment's notice. A giant downpour would have spoiled our anniversary dinner, but the waitstaff had us all moved inside before a drop of rain. Our experience in Venice was that the food can be pretty hit or miss. In a city where almost 100% of your clientele will only visit you once it's easy to see why there are so many tourist traps (mediocre food and high prices). Not this place. I'm rating it 5 stars based on the food and atmosphere, but based on our other meals in Venice Osteria Bancogiro should get a special bump to six if possible. read more

This hole in the wall restaurant bar combo is worth the wait and worth the money. We arrived around six pm with two 60L+ backpacks in tow. The ground floor is a small bar with tons of local wine options, red, white, and sparkling. The servers were very knowledgeable and spoke English well. The upstairs dining room didn't open until 7pm and if you want to make sure you get a seat go ahead and make a reservation. The dining room sits 13 people between five tables but it doesn't feel cramped. I ordered the Butter and Sage tortilloni and a local Laguna white wine. The White was a great dinner wine and perfect for someone who doesn't have a developed pallet but wants to try something new. My friend got the risotto, a glass of Merlot, and a glass of pino negro. All of which were fantastic. Service was prompt and left nothing to be desired. The server even directed us to a small alcove to store our bags during dinner and they were safe and sound.
