We hadn't made plans and decided as a group that we wanted pizza. I googled pizza and saw there were good reviews for Il Gatto e La Volpe so we headed on over. Walking up, I see the word Osteria and think, "hmmm, that doesn't seem right," but we just walked in and asked for a table anyway, without looking at the menu outside. Much to our shock, this is a fancy place with no pizza in sight. We were contemplating leaving but we were hungry and decided to just stay. I'm glad we did. The food here is incredible and the service was actually quite good. Yes, this place is a bit pricier than most and they charge that coperto but it wasn't much and it doesn't bother me to have to pay for cloth napkins and bread. Stopped in on our way to another restaurant, noticing the awards on the window. Fast seating due to a Tuesday night. We didn't interact much with the staff but they were cordial. Hugo spritz was very strong, beware! But the pesto gnocchi was incredible, soft and pillowy with the perfect amount of sauce. Free bread and seasonings set out for the table, always a plus. My friend also tried the ragù al cinghiale (wild boar), which she loved. Total was $14 for each pasta dish, $9 for each spritz. Do not go here. I made a reservation at 7:30pm for 9 people (for my moms 60th birthday). When we showed up they said they didn't have the reservation even though we had the confirmation email. Well. This business was empty at about 1030p at night. Having shown up 15 minutes late because taxis were no where in sight the server said they were closed. When I advised I had a 1015 reservation and online says they are open until 1130, I guess they did t really mean 1130. He then advised he might be able to seat us this time. Gave them 5 Stars for a number of reasons, but give that it was a last minute option because we didn't have reservations made it even more impressive. It's nice to go into a place with modest expectations and high hopes and be pleasantly surprised. It was really a very nice dining experience. The wait staff friendly, very attentive, and fun . With the exception of the bread (definitely needed salt) all four meals including the Zucchini balls appetizer were excellent. They were not complex dishes, but in true Italian style they were executed very well. We had the clam linguine, the Duck Ragu pasta, the cheese tortatella, and the Spaghetti pomodoro with Baratta.....all excellent. Our first choice for lunch in Florence was closed on Sunday's, so my sister recommended this spot. She had been here before and felt like the food was so-so. We walked in and caught 100 Koreans unaware. They were eating family style with their tour group and it was such a large group that we were scared we wouldn't get seated. They saw 4 unaccompanied Asians and seemed confused. We were led to the back which was much quieter and less crowded. The server was very friendly and helpful as we made our order. He brought us some deliciously warm complimentary bread, which went well with the vinegar and the olive oil that were provided. I ordered the Funghi and tartufo risotto, per the server's recommendation, and it was quite good. I'm a huge mushroom lover and I can never turn down risotto. The rice was cooked perfectly (I'm glad they didn't make it al dente as tends to be the trend). My mother ordered a ribolta, which is a bread and soup mixture that she said was delicious, although the consistency looked fishy to me. Give it a try if you're brave! The tiramisu we ordered afterward was moist and creamy. Definitely a step up from the late night tiramisu we stumbled upon in Rome the night before. The meal was perfect for our purposes. The wine was flowing and we were having a good time. They even brought us a champagne toast which was probably prosecco. The dessert was a piece of cake with a cream sauce. First, I must say the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. However, this was this restaurant's saving grace. I suspect from the taste of the food and proximity to some touristy spots, that this was geared towards the visitors with a bland palate. I started with the Tagliolini ai Porcini which is a thinner version of linguini with Porcini mushrooms. Looks quite appetizing but the flavor was not there. Even with adding Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper, this still was ok. The lasagna was not tender to the bite, bland, and drowned in sauce. I suspect it was from a previous day. The margarita pizza was reminiscent of a frozen pizza you'd cook on a Friday night after work. Again, the staff was very nice and smiles the entire time. If you ask me what the best meal is I've ever had, the answer will always be gnocchi from Gatto. I probably ate here twice a week for two months straight while studying abroad.
