    Pesto pistachio gnocchi

Stopped in on our way to another restaurant, noticing the awards on the window. Fast seating due to a Tuesday night. We didn't interact much with the staff but they were cordial. Hugo spritz was very strong, beware! But the pesto gnocchi was incredible, soft and pillowy with the perfect amount of sauce. Free bread and seasonings set out for the table, always a plus. My friend also tried the ragù al cinghiale (wild boar), which she loved. Total was $14 for each pasta dish, $9 for each spritz. So it's an expensive place if you're looking to get multiple dishes, ie. the sizzling steak, which smelt amazing, but we weren't. Highly recommend!

    Bistecca alla Florentina

Bistecca alla Fiorentina Everyone loves the pizza and pasta of Italy, but for a meat-lover like myself, Florence and the Bisteca Florentina is what it's about Taken from a young steer or heifer, the cut is essentially a porterhouse consisting of a strip sirloin (NY strip) and filet Preparation is via charcoal coals and the exterior is well-crusted with a rare interior only. No well-done sacrilegious orders allowed I chose a Chianini breed cut aged for 6 weeks (typical is 2 weeks) with no sides and topped only with olive oil and quality salt As others enjoyed their pasta, I enjoyed my Bistecca alla Fiorentina in all its glory Il Cacio e Pepe €12 / Bistecca alla Fiorentina 1.2 kg ~ €100 Osteria del Gatto e la Volpe (Florence, Italy)

    Carbonara, beef stew , bread

Carbonara was top notch! The beef stew had to many pepper corns in it, had to pick through if a lot to avoid them but still very tender and delicious.

Truffle rissito and a side of grilled veggies

Came here for dinner after my party and I came back to Florence after doing some activities outside of the city. My friend wanted to come by based on their name, lol. I got their truffle risotto dish and a side of grilled veggies. Both were delicious and I was happy with our decision to come here. Service was attentive and the rest of my party travel were also pleased with their respective choices. A pretty solid place to come to for a decent meal, located close to the city center.

    Happy diner.

Oh come on!?! Prix fixe dinner: Huge plate of appetizers, a bowl of buccatini with boar sagu, a steak the size of Godilla's foot and then biscotti+ vinosanto! For €130 for two?!? Did I mention they throw in a bottle of wine (red, white, or combo glasses)?

    Empty dinning room

Well. This business was empty at about 1030p at night. Having shown up 15 minutes late because taxis were no where in sight the server said they were closed. When I advised I had a 1015 reservation and online says they are open until 1130, I guess they did t really mean 1130. He then advised he might be able to seat us this time. If he wanted to go home, next time lock the door. Ordered the cat and hoax pizza- came out burned on the edges. You would think that the cook could watch the only thing they were cooking. Otherwise good taste thanks to the included oil oil. Wild boar pappardelle- well, the sauce was missing something. Maybe garlic or another flavor. Nothing to remember. The pappardelle was nice and cooked correctly. Would not order it again. Overall. I would avoid this place and go across the street or down the street. There are many options and the emptiness of the restaurant should have been my first clue.

Great ambiance & delicious fresh food. Very authentic feeling with mostly locals dining. Did not feel touristy.

From the outside, it looks like a grand, iron-and-glass structure typical of European markets; inside, it opens into a bustling, multi-level space filled with food vendors, communal tables, and constant movement. The vibe is energetic, social, and slightly chaotic in a fun way - perfect for grazing, group dining, or trying multiple cuisines in one visit (from Italian to American to Mexican!). We stopped in for a quick lunch at around 2pm on a Wednesday; there was plenty of seating at high-top tables, and QR codes on paper menus make it easy to explore all the different food vendor options. It's also a fun activity to peruse the market, taking in different sights, smells, and flavors. All of us ended up opting for Schiacciatas (large Italian sandwiches that are a staple in Florence) from Massimiliano Parri, which all ended up ranging from €10-12, depending on toppings - yes, it's more expensive than what you'd get from a traditional schiacciateria, but you're also paying for the market's location and convenience. We appreciated the fact that they shave the meat right in front of you! My schiacciata came with freshly shaved ham atop crusty white bread, slathered with burrata cheese, and sprinkled with arugula and figs (I opted for no additional olive oil, since I found the ham quite rich already). I loved the contrast of textures and flavors, though I will say that the bread ended up cutting the roof of my mouth! All in all, Mercato Centrale is a bit touristy, but still miles better (and cheaper) than most "Italian" sandwich places you'd find in the US (pro tip: save your receipt for free use of their bathrooms). The variety can't be beaten, prices are reasonable for a central market, and it's steps from some of Florence's most iconic spots.
