My family of 7 had dinner here this evening.My husband and I have just completed 4 days in Rome and 4 days in Florence. My son and his family arrived in the late afternoon after a 24 hour exhausting trip. They were too tired to walk too far so I found this restaurant on Yelp, close to where we were staying. We went to this charming, family-run Florentine restaurant two nights in a row. The owner / host / chef - 'Johnnie' - has so much passion for bringing to life the incredible classic food of this iconic Italian city and creating an authentic experience for his guests. On night one we had the meat & cheese board and salad for starters, Pear and Gorgonzola gnocchi, paci con carbonara, lobster and prawn ravioli, mushroom pasta (a special for the evening) and the house Chianti for dinner and affogatos and lemon gelato for dessert. Every item was crafted with love and absolutely divine. One member of our party wanted the Panna Cotta and it wasn't available, however, Johnnie offered to make it for us for the following day. We returned last night and had sausages for a starter, then pasta with meat sauce, florentine steak (for 2) with potatoes, and for dessert Panna Cotta (of course!) and Tiramisu. Again, epic night. There were only two of us. Service was slow. Menu only in italian as they worry that people will think they serve only tourists. Actually, only tourists go there. Nothing special in decor or ambiance. We're charged for water but never served. "Couldn't make" credit card machine work. Cash only. Good thing we had cash. Pretty bad overall. Avoid! read more

This was such a delightful little restaurant! We heeded a suggestion in one of the reviews and ordered the gorgonzola gnocchi with pear and pistachio which was delicious. The risotto with asparagus and blackberry panna cotta were also delightful on a hot summer day. This place is down an alley next to the Bargello. I have ate here twice while studying abroad and it is easily my favorite restaurant in all of Florence. Both times the server (owner?) has been extremely helpful and explained the Italian menu to us. The food is incredible!! I ordered the Pici alla Carbonara both times and it is by far the best pasta I've had in Italy. All our pasta dishes were under €13 so it is extremely cost friendly. We also ordered the Bistecca Fiorentina and it is incredible but also expensive because it's charged by the kilo! The restaurant was pretty empty except for our table both times that I visited but the ambiance is very welcoming and deserves more love! 10/10 reccomend! read more

Before we entered the door, the person at the door was so rude we left. My wife simply asked a question if they had zuppa.(soup). You see because we were looking for soup for my son who was sick back at the apartment. We planned on eating at the restaurant and taking back some soup to ease his pain. The mail at the door stated "we are not Chinese", "we don't eat soup here", and you have to "eat whatever we serve here". And turn them away as if they were dogs in the street Everywhere that I've been in Italy so far has been very accommodating and very friendly. But this place turns my stomach to think that an in human, uncaring so-called man can be at the front of a business. Turning away a woman and a child's needs. Heartless, inconsiderate and downright rude. I wonder if he even has a mother or ever had a child. Hopefully he didn't because I would feel sorry for his children. I cannot comment about the food, but definitely I would not spend one single dollar or euro in the establishment that is owned by or even employs somebody like the man at the door. I can't even tell you what the place looks like, because, didn't get to even see the inside of the shop. So as far as the ambience goes, I could care less. I would not expect somebody who treated a potential customer in this way wouldn't stoop so low as to spit in your soup! If they had one. Update the man was the owner and chef !! read more

Great find! We unintentionally stopped here for dinner when the restaurant we were looking for was reservation only. So cute and quiet. We were the only ones in there but not for lack of great food! Sweet family owned joint and perfectly quaint Italia! We shared a gnocchi in cream sauce with crushed pistachios on top. I will be dreaming about that dish for many years to come. We also had a ravioli dish with radicchio. It was slightly bitter for my liking but still quite good- didn't stop us from eating the whole thing. If you are looking for an incredible food experience- where the owner waits on you and then goes to cook the food that you ordered with his lovely wife - than this is the place. Completely hidden.... Until dessert, our table of four were the only the ones in the restaurant... on a Saturday night. The service is amazing... the food is amazing and 100% home cooked. The cocktails are great- a little heavy on the alcohol but heck - you are on vacation so that's what you want. The gnocchi was amazing- my wife wouldn't let me lick the sauce off the plate for fear of embarrassing her. The appetizers were as fresh as I've ever had. Tomatoes seemed to be picked right off the vine before coming to our table. The tiramisu was unbelievable. Great ambiance as there was literally a church choir singing a few hundred meters from us that just added to the experience. Do yourself a favor. Wonderful meal here. It's small and a bit away from the big sets of restaurants in the area but that's a plus. Simple tight menu, big flavors, great experience. We had wild boar pasta and carbonara with panna cotta for desert along with a carafe of their house Chianti. It all went together just right. Do yourself a favor and stop in for dinner. After shopping, Smiley escorted is to a great find of a restaurant. Our hard working owner/matradee took good care of us with spaghetti with mussels, salad & more. We were recommended this restaurant and didn't really know what to expect, but it quickly became one of the best experiences we have had in Florence. The owner/ chef is taking your order and preparing your food in record timing (for one person to be doing it all). The restaurant is a little more quiet and intimate, but in a refreshing way for a city that can feel like it's overflowing with tourists. My mom said the carbonara was the best she has ever had, and the gnocchi with Gorgonzola was the creamiest, most pillow-like I've ever tasted. Absolutely loved this place. Giovanni the owner is a true gem. His food is amazing and the setting is just so quaint. We didn't have reservations, so we're turned away from the first three places we visited. This restaurant was on the same street--wasn't too sure as not many people were there, but we were hungry and decided to take a chance. Very glad we did! We had the caprese salad (best tomatoes and excellent mozzarella), the carbonara pasta and the meat sauce pasta--both were exceptional. We finished off with the tiramisu and the panna cota which were also excellent. The house red wine (a very generous pour) was good as well. Only item that didn't impress was the bread...but who cares when everything else was so good. Very glad we gave this place a chance--I am happy to recommend it! read more

Visited 18.09.2014. I'll start this by saying Italian is not usually a cuisine I crave - I only like it when it's really, really good. Secondly, I was very disappointed with most of the food and restaurants I encountered on my trip in Italy. I'm not ashamed to say that the apparent cultural lack of emphasis on food presentation also does not help a weary tourist to tell the good from the bad. (Where I come from, you can usually tell visually that a restaurant's food is probably going to be above or below average. I clearly do not know what to look for when it comes to Italian food in Italy.) Anyway, I found this restaurant on Yelp that was literally a two minute walk from our B&B (Condotta House), and am so glad I did. My companion and I ate here every night of our stay in Florence, and nothing they served me was less than fantastic. Sitting in the cobblestone alley was a charming bonus. All I can tell you is that when I do crave Italian food, I want it from Il Barroccio. Too bad I am over six thousand miles away. Someday I'll be back for you, Il Barroccio! The owner and master chef Giovanni is an awesome guy. He knows food. His assistant Roberto is equally cool. These guys know how to serve food and make you feel welcome. Located in the heart of Florence but off a side street so it is not chaotic or touristy. You must eat here at least once while in Florence. They served us MOLDY BREAD. If you don't believe me, I posted the picture. I was in such disbelief myself I though maybe it wasn't mold, it was some special bread, so I tried a little, and it was stale and flavorless and disgusting. I've never been so insulted. Another table with two foreigners got served the same moldy bread and sent it back. I don't know if they ever got the fresh bread they asked for. I did think the meat lasagna was amazing, so I gave this place 2 stars (instead of 1) for that. I also got the stewed beef with a side of vegetables. I've had plenty of stewed beef in my life... That was softer and processed better. It also had a weird flavor I didn't like, though I think a lot of people would like it. The side of veggies was just two veggies - carrots (which already came with my beef) and what we think was Italian zucchini. It was ok but not what I wanted, and pretty oversteamed. I didn't finish the veggies or the beef. I didn't like the server either. Yes he was friendly and spoke English, but on top of serving us obviously moldy bread (you could see the mold on top), promising the other table fresh bread but either taking forever or never delivering (and not offering the same to us), he was like, "you don't like my beef?!" which is rude by American standards (maybe not Italian? But every other florencien was the sweetest human being I ever met). I politely told him I was stuffed, and then he tried to sell me dessert. I stopped by here as I was really hungry and noted the on the menu, which is both in Italian and English, that they had wild boar. I ordered it with a spaghetti like pasta along with a glass of house red wine. As you might know, one need never be concerned with the quality of house wines in Italy. Though the dish wasn't meant as a main course, it was delicious and plenty for me. I've eaten a lot of wild boar, mostly in what was East Germany and South Florida, and have to say the way it was prepared here at Il Barroccio was the best. Then, as far as the restaurant goes, I loved it. Being a family (wife cooks, husband serves) operation you couldn't ask for better. Got lucky on trying this one. Here's a list of the positives. Only negative is its cash only although the prices are modest (under 10 euro for a plate of pasta). 1. Owner speaks English 2. Menu is in both English and Italian 3. Place is air conditioned 4. Owner was very accommodating to the vegetarians in out party 5. Owner was the waiter and cook ( I just think that's cool) 6. Food was delicious (been to Italy over a dozen times and tried a lot of restaurants here.
