The most striking thing about this restaurant is the high level of service.i can think of at least 5 examples of how their service exceeded my expectations: 1) When we arrived, the staff were expecting us and knew it was us. We had called 3 hours ahead, but this touch set the tone. 2) they had set up a perfect table for two for us by the window, with an incredible view. 3) We wanted some salad as we had been binging on hearty food throughout our Tuscan adventure, and if you've been to these parts, you know that even their salads have carbs. So when we expressed our desire for a green salad which was not on the menu, they had no reservations about cooking us up a perfect salad. 4) The chef came out to check on us to see if everything was ok. He walked to each table, which I have rarely seen. 5) When we were leaving, I asked if I could take my bottle of sparkling water with me. It was late at night and I was doubtful of finding a place to find water. The restaurant actually gave me a whole new bottle to take with me. Now how about the food? Really amazing! Duck ragout, and ravioli, both were excellent. The wine was incredible. I had a glass of chianti classico but regretfully didn't write down the name. If I could rate this place 6 stars, I would! An incredible vista!!!Unfortunately, on the night we went. The service was poor, we were told by three waiters it was their first day, and that the head maître d' was sick (not information that should be share with guests, but I am not a local). The service was extremely slow, not up to the standards of a restaurant like this. Our food came out between 30 minutes and an hour and a half after ordering. That is one meal came out after 30 minutes and one meal came 90 minutes after it was ordered. We were told that since we did not have reservations, we should expect such a service, premium service (all food arriving at the same time) is exclusive to people with reservations, however, we did notice guests that had reservations getting their own utensils and menus an a bit annoyed. Some of the food was very good, unfortunately, not all. One dish was described as Wildboar. It tasted, to us like beef, poor quality beef at that (good enough for Americans). The staff insisted that the meat was high quality wild-boar and we were not sophisticated enough to know the difference. (We are sure it was not boar) Please try it, I assume they're service is going to be much better than the night we dined, it was a pretty epic failure on the wait staff and kitchen. This place does have the most epic Tuscan view.

We ate here two nights out of the three we stayed in Castellina and loved both meals. The first night we got their fall seasonal special of tortelloni with truffles. The tortelloni are large and have ricotta spinach filling in a delicious cream truffle sauce. We also got the boar ragu papardelle which was rich and very tasty. For secondis we got the traditional tuscan stews: one of beef and one of boar. The meat was incredibly tender and tasty, with a great piece of polenta to go alongside. We got the desert sampler, which was also great. Both nights the total for the meal was very reasonable--and the basic glass of chianti classico was delicious.
