Where to start. We walked in with no reservations. They were full and had no availability but the gentleman said "give me 10 minutes " and gave each of us a glass of wine. 10 minutes later he seated us. We ordered the pappardelle with duck sauce and the roasted rabbit. This was truly the best food we've had in Florence. The wine list was not huge but offered great priced options. This restaurant was a real treat. Beautiful ambiance and felt very authentic. No tourists (besides ourselves), which we always seek out and appreciate. The service was good, despite only having one server for the restaurant. The artichoke was very tasty, and was complemented well by the grilled polenta over chickpeas puree. House wine was tasty and did its job. We ordered the stuffed rabbit and the penne mushroom dish, both were delicious! The peas in both dishes were definitely the star of the show. One of the reasons I married my husband was his unrivaled ability to pick good restaurants for our date nights. Our last night in Florence was no exception. After a grueling walk up and down to Piazzale Michelangelo, we went to Hosteria del Bricco. My husband had made reservations, but we were the first guests of the evening (7pm is super early for dinner in Italy) and got seated immediately in the back. The menus and decor were all dusty and triggered my allergies, but I'm guessing that's part of the ambiance. Our meal was probably my favorite out of our entire Italian honeymoon. My husband got the porchetta (maialino) while I settled on the stewed beef with pepper sauce (peposo alla fornacina). Everything on the menu sounded amazing so it was a tough choice. The beef melted in my mouth, and the sauce had the perfect amount of spice. The porchetta was salty, complimenting the side of potatoes. It was a large amount of food. I think you could split 2 dishes between 3 people and save room for dessert. Service was friendly, and I like that all the staff members were dedicated to a smooth operation at this restaurant, remaining polite but not detracting from the main star of the show... The food. This has to be one of my favorite dinners in all of Italy! You do need to have a reservation beforehand and if you are lucky you can walk in. There is only a certain amount of tables a night, I believe so reserve if you can. The house wine is spectacular. The place is intimate with brick walls and eclectic artwork. The food I hear is from their grandmas special recipes. Note that this is a family business that is run by just themselves. There was one server the whole night who did a fantastic job! Nice restaurant in the Oltrano close to the hotel David. Neighborhood restaurant and not touristy at all. We eat her every time we are in Florence. We always make a reservation but depending on the day of the week you may not need one. We came at 8 and it wasn't crowded. We had the house carafe of wine. You can't go wrong with that choice in any restaurant in Florence. It was another great meal, caprese salad, bread, pasta and a steak dish. I had chocolate cake for desert. This was the best meal we had our entire trip to Florence hands down! We saw the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo then went here which was just a few minutes away- the absolute perfect evening. I came here with my bf after getting some recommendations from his friends. This place definitely hit the spot - it was perfect and exactly what I wanted for dinner! He and I shared some wine (can't remember which, but nothing fancy) and the peas as a side dish (which seemed an odd choice IMO, but were sooo good!). I ordered one of the pasta specials for my main dish, boar pasta. It was probably one of the best pasta meals I had during my trip to Northern Italy :) I don't speak much Italian, so I found the servers spoke kind of fast for me. However, my bf is from Italy - with him doing all the talking, there were no issues. From a service standpoint, there was nothing special. They were efficient and didn't really hang around or anything, but they were available when needed. Tip: Make a reservation to secure your table, if you can. By the time we left, it was packed so some people were turned away. Not sure when I'll be in Florence next time, but whenever that is, I would probably try to stop by here again :) read more

Spectacular!! My first visit to Hostaria del Bricco was in 1973. I have dined here during 4 trips to Florence. The current owners have been in place for over 25 years. The staff is Mom, Dad and Son. Seating accommodates no more than about 20-25 persons. The decor is rustic with wooden beams and white stucco walls. It is immaculate. I believe the expense rating of 3 Euro is a bit too high. The food is incomparable. This is classic Tuscan fare. Our meal started with crostini with 5 toppings ranging from pate to a spicy pepper jam and pureed eggplant. Pasta was tagliatelle saturana (with boar meat) and a brilliant penne coccio (with truffles and peas), Secondi of artichoke stuffed rolletini, thinly sliced beefsteak with pecorino and arugula, and veal with a lemon egg sauce were all amazing. The house wine was very good.I think del Bricco is a perfect representation of Tuscan cuisine; simple, yet remarkably flavorful. The price of 100 Euro for this wonderful meal would easily be doubled in any major U.S city. My vocabulary is not good enough to adequately describe this remarkable restaurant. Over a 40 year career I have been fortunate to have dined in amazing restaurants in New York, Chicago, Rome, Paris, Lyon, Zurich, Vienna, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and many others. Our hotel had recommended this restaurant for us one evening and we are glad they did. Just a quick walk from our location, we found this beautiful family owned restaurant. We started the evening with a meat and cheese board and a caprese salad. The salami and cheeses were to die for and presented so elegantly. The entree I ordered was a pappardelle in a duck sauce, which was as extremely flavorful and delicious! This place was such an enjoyable experience and the family was so nice and accommodating. Wish I could recommend this place higher, it's located in a hostel, but don't let that fool you. It's a locals place with plenty of heart and soul. It was recommended by both a local corner shop and family. It's a charming place, and the grandmother cooking reassured me that I was going to go straight to heaven. Wine was great and not expensive, start with the salami plate, if you're more adventurous start with the cruspini with dips (fair warning it's chutneys of olives, chicken liver, eggplant etc). The second plate was a short pasta with mixed mushrooms and truffle sauce served with fresh parmigiana, I'm still salivating from that pasta. The pasta was fresh, truffle was not overdone, can't laud this enough. The third plate was a sliced steak with bacon bits and arugula with fresh olive oil, a great accompanying dish. The other dishes on the menu looked just as appetizing and I still wish I could go back again...Maybe the next visit. read more

We visited this restaurant with a reservation through Fork.com. It was a quaint, brick covered restaurant and we sat around a large wooden table for 8 people and had a great meal. It felt like as a family dinner in Italy should be. Good food with lots of laughs. We enjoyed conversing with the manager and he took good care of us. We ordered several appetizers and they were all excellent as were the entrees. At the end of the meal, the manager was kind enough to offer us some Grappa and had a toast with us. read more

Although the restaurant opens only for dinner, after asking the owners, they made an exception. The setting is nice, Very cozy and welcoming. The crostini and artichoke polenta are great appetizers to try, and the wild boar and duck sauce pastas are absolutely splendid.
