    Halibut and Skirt Steak.

This is a restaurant that understands the fundamentals of quality front of house. From the time you sit down to the time you leave you receive Michelin star service. Water glasses always refilled, crumbs swept from the table and exceptional service from a friendly, professional staff. Food was great from Flank Steak to the Halibut, we did not leave much for the dishwashing machine. Dessert was a home run, get the chocolate soufflé ridiculously delicious, crème brûlée also exceptional. Go for the staff stay for the food.

Wowza!!! We selected this restaurant to celebrate our Slugs graduation and it did not disappoint! The serves and staff are AMAZING! The interior is cozy and warm. We were seated by a window with a bench seat and chairs. Very inviting. Let's get to the very best part-FOOD! Unfortunately we did not get to try the Focaccia (out) or the lamb(out). Our seating was later in the evening so that is understandable. We dined in lasagna, Sirlon tips with roasted carrots and a burger. All were amazingly flavorful.

We loved Oswald. We had heard it referenced as a classic spot in Santa Cruz, so it had been on our list for a while. The burger was, easily, the best burger I've had in Santa Cruz. They cooked it perfectly medium rare, and the add-ons to the burger were wonderful. The Dungeness crab was solid as well (though in my opinion a bit overpriced at $36 for the quantity). Would definitely recommend as a whole!

I have nothing but incredible things to say about this place. My partner and I love to come here for date nights for a number of reasons. The food is obviously delicious but the best thing is how attentive the staff is. From the host and how she greeted us to our server Freya. We have loved coming back and have had great service from Janelle and many other servers. There has not been a single thing about this place that wasn't perfect.

Food is really good here. Hands down best bistro style burger around here. Drinks are solid too. Happy hour is 100% worth it. Service is great and the bartender cares about making good drinks. Not a huge fan of the location, but I'd imagine it will get super busy in a year or two once those apartments are complete.

In downtown Santa Cruz, there's a lovely restaurant that makes wonderful food. It was my daughter's choice for her 20th bday family dinner. We were sat promptly, brought our bread appetizer and drinks once prepared and then the order was taken. It was a Friday but despite it being full, it wasn't noisy with loud people. It was very relaxing. I had the best duck breast and ate so much, we couldn't get the chocolate soufflé. I'll have to go back for that some time.

I love this place. Its owner operated and the attention to detail shows. The food & drinks are always amazing, the service 5-stars. Vibe is awesome.

We completely stumbled onto Oswald because we were in the area and had a terrible experience somewhere else. Oswald saved our night! Oswald had the ideal blend of sultry ambiance, swanky decor with local artwork and cool lighting fixtures, great cocktails, delicious bites, and too-notch attentive service! Our server checked on us so much that I knew she caught whenever we finished a plate or a drink because she'd swoop in to take it or offer something else. She was fastastic. Customers seemed happy and the noise level was medium. It's not a family/kids place; more of an adult vibe, just fyi. I can't wait to return to Oswald for a full dining experience.

Summary: decent food, good drinks, attentive staff, needs more ambiance Details: Oswald has been around for 30 plus years so you know they are doing some things right. Most weekdays, it's full of locals who have their favorite tables or eat at the bar. Weekends the tourists take over. I suppose it's like an old pair of jeans -- comforting and not surprising. Heads up: the house made focaccia s quite good but an extra charge. Some severe explain this and others don't. A few items from my recent visits: Halibut served with lentils and rice. The pesto really makes the dish. This one wowed me. Mushroom bread pudding. Sounds odd, tastes good. By all accounts, this is their most popular dish. Lasagna (beef) served with an unusual salad they label ozzie (not sure why). The lasagna is a comfort dish. Fine but not special. Fried chicken: I'm a bit of a fried chicken snob. This one is middle of the road. The crust needs extra seasoning and the bird was a touch overcooked. Generous portion though. The desserts are all pretty good too. The almond custard torte was flavorful but not too heavy. Amusing note from the menu: "Please note that we do not have a hard close time. We close at the discretion of our owner. " Oswald's may not be fine dining but you'll be fine dining here.

Lunch today with a friend to celebrate my birthday --we met in the middle and ended up at Oswald. I hadn't been here in over 10 years and wax looking forward to trying it. One thing about laid back Santa Cruz is well, it's way laid back. The restaurant was mostly empty today. Rather sterile interior. Our server was the bartender, bus person, food server -- I didn't see any other staff in the restaurant the whole time we were there. Felt a little strange but he did a good job and was helpful. The food: speaking just for me I thought it was pretty bad. I had fish and chips. No self respecting Brit would have eaten one bit of what they called, Fish and Chips. Funny I looked at the current reviews and pics and not one picture of P and C-- I should have guessed why. Ok here's the bottom line -- 5 very small little thin pieces of fish deep fried in a non traditional batter. Literally zero fish maybe 1/8 inch thick 4-5 inches long and 1 inch wide. Zero taste. Zero fish and batter that looked like it was cooked 3 days ago. Fries were ok. Just to be fair, my friend had the fried chicken sandwich that came with a slab of cheese melted on top (?) and said it was ok. The extra salad side looked ok too. I know it's not fair to judge the whole restaurant on one dish so I am reviewing just my meal. I won't be running back but maybe you'll have better luck.

We started with the Pork Belly & Watermelon, which was incredibly refreshing. The smoked pork belly was super tender and paired perfectly with the miso aioli and soy caramel glaze. The chili added just the right amount of heat to balance the richness of the pork. For our main course, we had the Filet Mignon. It literally melted in our mouths and was served with a silky tahini onion purée. We also loved how they transformed the leek and farro into crispy sticks--they added such a fun texture to the dish. Both dishes are highly recommended! We each ordered our own dessert. The Vim Chocolate Cake paired beautifully with a rich raspberry jam. It wasn't overly sweet, and we loved the subtle buttery aroma. The Mississippi Mud Pie is definitely in top three desserts. If you love brownies and caramel, this is the one to order. The presentation was beautiful, and both desserts were large enough to share. We finished with cappuccinos, and as expected, the coffee was excellent. The service was top-notch. We came from San Francisco & spent the day at the boardwalk. It was dinner time & we didn't know where to eat & majority of places closed at 9pm. However, based off good reviews we found this place nearby. We weren't sure if they would allow us to dine in since we arrived pretty late around 8:40pm. Luckily, the waitresses didn't hesitate to seat our party of 6. (3 hungry kids & 3 adults) We ordered the: -Garlic New York Steak- medium rare & it was so good. Cooked perfectly & topped with roasted garlic. Mixed in the garlic herb butter with the mashed potatoes. It was delish! - Mac & cheese: we ordered a large & it was really yummy & enough for all of us to share. - Tiramisu: I was excited to order this and it did not disappoint. I'm always on the hunt for a good piece of tiramisu, as it's hard to find especially infused with rum. Not only was the flavor & texture perfect, it was paired with whip cream sprinkled with cocoa powder & strawberries. Such a tasty combination. Also, I'd like to give a special shout out to our waitress & chef for being so accommodating to us. They stayed open way after closing time & didnt rush us. For one of our entrees, as we cut the steak, we accidentally dropped 1/2 of it. Since it was our fault we weren't going to ask for another steak. However, when our waitress found out, she asked the chef to make another one. Surprisingly, they were very generous to give us an entire new plate. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and will be sure to dine here again during our next visits!

We started off with the calamari appetiser which for 18 dollars was a bit disappointing. It was greasy and a bit chewy, lacking flavor as well. Then we ordered our mains which were the garlic steak with asparagus and mashed potatoes and the new york with prawns, asparagus, and roasted potatoes. The new york was beautifully cooked however the garlic steak was slightly overcooked yet still marinated wonderfully. The mashed potatoes were really good but the roasted potatoes were rather gummy and a bit lukewarm. The asparagus were some of the best we've ever had. We also ordered a side of garlic bread with mozzarella but it was more akin to a ciabatta bun with shredded cheese on top. Overall some of the food was incredible, and some was lacking, but the service was amazing.

I wish there was more than just 2 blossoms because we definitely could have just kept going. -pork chop entree special: so juicy!! the variety of flavors were so good. The corn mousse was delicious and not too sweet. If you wanted more sweetness, the au jus tasted almost like honey on the plate. Squashes were perfectly cooked and light to balance the flavors of everything else. Great grilled taste too. -peach toast: just great!! Sweet and a little savory from the buttered toast. Nice palette cleanser almost before our entrees 9/10 for the creme brulee: solid. Fun creme brulee top but very thin layer. The sauce was like a tart apple caramel that nicely balanced the sweet and creamy cake. 8/10 for: -pasta entree: fresh pasta was soo perfectly bouncy and soft. Sauce was balanced and light. Nothing crazy but I liked it. Partner thought it was a bit normal -pork belly starter: very flavorful and yummy but can be a bit salty on its own. Partner and I wish we could have had some mashed potatoes, bread, or white rice with it but then it would probably be more of an entree very good though! Eggplant sauce was lovely even for those who don't like eggplant normally. This also had mushrooms. 4-5/10 for the tuna ceviche because it mostly just tasted sour. I liked the cherry tomato and basil addition, but it needed some spice or more tomato and basil to balance out the sourness of the lime. this was the only dish I wish we didn't get I'd recommend this place for a nice date night! There is a small patio outside. I think they MIGHT accommodate pets out there. There is also a small elevator lift for those who need an accessible way up. Otherwise, you'll have to walk up a few steps. Kitchen is in the back but in an opened lay out. You can see them cooking everything if you sit at the bar or facing that way. Probably better for small groups or couples rather than a large party. We made a reservation at 7 and were seated promptly. Seemed like a full house all night. May need to wait a bit for walk in parties.

The hostess didn't seem particularly welcoming when we arrived, and after being seated, it took about 10 minutes before someone came over to take our order. However, throughout the rest of our meal, service remained quite slow. We had to ask several times for water refills, and it often felt like other tables were receiving more attention than ours. That said, the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered the calamari appetizer, prime rib sandwich, fish and chips, and the kids' grilled cheese with fries. Everything was tasty, and the entrée portions were much larger than we expected--definitely enough to take leftovers home. Overall, if you're looking for delicious food, generous portions, and a beautiful view, I would recommend giving the Crow's Nest a try. However, based on our experience, the service could use some improvement. Hopefully, our experience was just an off day, especially since the food itself was excellent.

This spot has been around for years, and when my boys were younger, we would come here after a day at the beach. And if you know fishermen, you know those stories have probably gotten a little bigger every year. My wife and I split the all-meat omelette, and it was delicious. They also do a fantastic job with the hash browns--crispy, hearty, and exactly what you want with breakfast. The coffee deserves its own paragraph. Bold, flavorful, and strong enough to make you believe you can conquer the day. Our server was wonderful. She has worked here since graduating from high school, and you could tell she genuinely cared about taking care of people. Friendly, positive, helpful, and the kind of service that makes you want to come back. There's a wonderful selection of food, but honestly, part of the experience is simply being there. You can almost feel the decades of stories in the walls--families, fishermen, beach days, laughter, and countless cups of coffee. This isn't just a place to grab breakfast. It's a place where Santa Cruz history is still being served--one omelette, one cup of coffee, and one slightly exaggerated fish story at a time. i've lived in santa cruz for four years now and this has been my absolute favorite restaurant…read moreduring this time. as this chapter of my life is closing, and i'm getting ready to start the next, i just knew i had to come again and bring my partner who has never been in before. for starters, all of the staff we interacted with were very kind. the host sat us promptly and handed us over to our server, cassandra, who thoroughly impressed us with her impeccable memory of all the specials, provided great suggestions, and gave us even greater service throughout the evening, and also enzo who kept our table so nice & clean! the weather was so perfect, we just had to sit outside! it was nice to see the restaurant so full and lively on a weeknight. the flow of business was so consistent, you just know something is being done right here! now, the service & ambience were great but we really came here for the food and the kitchen staff did not hold back. i felt like i was living through an episode of chef's table. while i always switch up my entree, my go to's at avanti are the olives & focaccia paired with an espresso martini. i've had an embarrassing amount of espresso martinis but this is still the best i've ever had. the bread and olives were divine, but so too were the salmon cakes we ordered on a whim. they were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside! next, we shared the new york steak and ricotta ravioli. the steak was wonderfully tender and the potatoes that came with it were truly nature's gift to humanity. the ravioli were also so tasty my partner had to physically restrain me from licking the plate clean but the final boss was really the dessert. i've actually never had dessert from avanti but i was feeling especially glutinous and ordered two -- the lemon tart and the butterscotch budino. the lemon tart was subtly sweet and effortlessly zesty and i'm so glad we tried it, however, the butterscotch dessert truly sent me to flavortown and i'm not coming back! (i'm probably coming back) thanks avanti!!

However, once we were seated (at the bar), our waitress was attentive and did a great job. Super enjoyed their all day Happy Hour for Tuesday (if you don't go on Tuesday, go during Happy Hour). They had great specials and a lot of really tasty sounding dishes. Ordered the Brussels Sprouts and Cauliflower and both had great flavors and were cooked perfectly. We would absolutely go back and try more items! Would also recommend to anyone in the area for an upscale dining experience.
