This is a friendly, well-stocked neighborhood shop that I love so much. Staff is unfailingly helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. You can pop in for something or browse for an hour. Awesome shop with a ton of back issues and lots of indie titles as well. Awesome staff and the guy that helped me walked me through their whole organization system to help me find what I was looking for. We stopped in Christmas Eve to get a game for the family. The staff was really helpful and had a number of suggestions. We ended up with Forbidden Island, which was a hit after dinner. We also ended up getting some dice from their large selection (you can never have too many sets of dice). I'm impressed with how much they can offer in a store their size! Gayle and I picked up David from his Religious Education class last Sunday and then went to his Portland house to see his room and computer set up. Soon after, we hopped in the car and started to head out of town for a shortish afternoon driving trip up the Columbia River. However, all the Kid really wanted to do was stay home, and just a few blocks from the house we had a rebellion on our hands. As a diversion, we offered to first take him to his favourite card store, so he could show it to us and hang out a bit. Other Worlds Games a neat community game store, generally located in my son's SW Portland neighbourhood. They're the "mecca" for Magic: the Gathering tournaments, singles and card supplies; Warhammer and Games Workshop products; Warmachine/Hordes and Privateer Press products; Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Dice and RPG supplies; Adventure and Family Boardgames, gaming tables, terrain tables with lots of terrain pieces available for your use, and in-store gaming events. In fact we walked in during a Sunday afternoon card tournament and were greeted warmly by Ron, who knows my son very well. My son's sister and her husband (D&D fans) also hang out here, which was also evidenced by a few crochet pieces that she had donated to the shop. My son was proud and happy to show us around and we enjoyed his hospitality. And after one more neighbourhood stop at Paint Pots, the Kid was happy again and ready to humor us as we proceeded on our afternoon adventure. read more

My bf and I found this place about 3 months ago. It's got a cute blowup dragon in front of it and is located right next to an ice cream shop. Its got a good mix of collectibles, games and comics. I really like the overall vibe of the place. The staff is friendly. I primarily go here for the comics but I love some of their toys and trades. I haven't played Magic in years but I'm still interested and they have some good MtG cards at the counter. They do Friday Night Magic and it looks well attended. Here are my pros and cons for this shop currently. Pros: -Long and short boxes with newer and old mixed comics with the deal buy 2 for cover price, get one free (I try to take advantage of this deal as often as I can). -Last 3 to 10 issues of current (within last 2 years) runs on wall (makes it easier to start a new run even if they are on issue 5 or even 10. -A few short boxes of $1.50 and $2 comics. -A few short boxes of awesome variants . -Good overall selection of new and old variants on wall. -Decent collection of trades. -Good mix of comic publishers (not just DC, Marvel, Darkhouse, Image, etc but also more independent publishers). -Great selection of games, esp for being a smaller store. -I haven't learned names yet cuz I'm ADHD and suck. However, I always remember faces and impressions and there is one chick that I thought was really cool, knowledgeable and fun to interact with when I was checking out. Even though it was 10 min to closing she encouraged us to look around and didn't make us feel rushed. On our first trip I believe we saw the owner and he was very laid back and fun to talk to. He was even playing a guitar at one point and let me tell you he did not suck. Lol. There is another really nice guy who works there, I think he might usually run Friday Night Magic. He was really pleasant and sweet. -I was an airhead one night and left my small notebook that I track comics in and my comic shop checklist in (it's silly but I treasure it). I'm a moron and didn't have my name or number in it. I called them the next day to ask of they'd found it. They said the hadn't but they took my number and said they'd actually look for it. They called me within an hour to let me know they found it on the wall next to some Harley comics. They held it at the counter with my name and number on a piece of paper in it so I could pick it up later that evening. It's a small thing but not many people would even bother esp since the notebook was so small and had comics on the cover that made it blend in. Cons: -The comics are not all bagged and even if they are they don't normally have boards. This means a lot of them are not in the best condition. You can still find some good books but if you are into collecting books with pristine spines and corners, you're going to struggle to find that here. -A lot of the wall books near the back of the rack are bent a little because the rack only goes halfway up the book. It's one of those wire racks you would find in old video rental stores (one of those stores is 2 doors down and neat to look at). -This place is very kid friendly which is neat but means there are a lot of noisy kids in there a lot of the time. This is not a bad thing really. I don't mind kids. But there have been some afternoons where they run a little rampant and they can leave some of the comic walls and boxes a little messy and more tattered. I do want to note they asked kids not to bring in ice cream and they seem really good with the kids (I'm assuming most of those kids are return customers). I think the kids are more interested in games and I like any place that promoted comics and games to children and newcomers, but I put this as a con only because it leaves the store a little more disorganized and chaotic. -Like many comic stores their pricing can vary. Based on comparison to stores like Cosmic Monkey and Things From Another World, some of their prices seem a little bit higher on some things esp for not necessarily being kept in the best condition. However, keep in mind they are a smaller store and the price difference is a matter of 30 or 50 cents which isn't huge. Overall, I really like visiting this place and checking it out. I grab a few new variants from here and I like getting titles like Coffin Hill and Revival from their buy 2 get 1 free boxes. I even like just coming to visit. They do have a rewards system that I only just started taking advantage of (you just use your number) but if you pay with cash you might have to ask if you can still use it since it won't prompt you like it does when you use a card. Friendly staff, nice vibe, a little disorganized but all in all a fun place to visit and get some good deals occasionally. They seem to have a really good selection here, but for some reason every new comic is jacked up $.30. Like what's up with that? I've never seen that in any shop, ever. Also it's kind of awkward in that store as the one employee who seems to be in charge wants to micromanage the other employee who does a great job at customer service and is very outgoing and engaging. I have mixed feelings about this place, but maybe it will change for better or worse the next time I visit. read more

This is an incredible local business! They are well stocked with inventory, the staff is awesome, and they have a lot of space for people to play games. My boyfriend and I are from Northern Idaho, and stopped by here so he could look for some particular Magic cards. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful, he found everything he wanted and more! They also recommended a local bakery which we tried and was simply amazing. Local store that knows games, magic cards, and comics. You can find hard to find games or they will get it for you. The staff is friendly. You can go in and play games to see if you like them. They have lots of opportunities for people to go in and play with others on a weekly basis. If you are into games that are creative, fun, and test the limits of your imagination then this is the store for you. its the type of place you can go in on a regular basis and have a connection. I would say this place is 60% comics and 40% games. They didn't have a very big selection of games and I had most of what they had on display. They do have gaming tables for locals to play games which is pretty sweet. I wish they had Superfight as that game would bridge the gap between both comics and games. I live in the area, and it's safe to say no other comic and games store can compare to other world games. The staff (especially Ron) are kind and helpful. The selection of graphic novels and recent releases (secret wars!!) is great. There's an amazing community in terms of gaming, although I'm really just there for the comics. It's about a one hour walk from my house, and I'm always ready In the morning to begin the journey and inevitably be joyfully surprised at what I can find. read more

Excellent neighborhood gaming and comic book shop. I was there for Friday Night Magic and met a bunch of really great people - there's a nice gaming crowd here. James behind the counter ran the event efficiently and with good humor. I was able to browse through the comic books and board games between rounds - they have many of my favorite games in stock and a handful that I've been wanting to try out. The store is conveniently located with plenty of parking, and there's a lot to do nearby (ice cream, video store, coffee shop, to name a few). I love going to Other Worlds Games because it offers so much. I just want to spend some time telling you why. First and foremost its a hobby shop, meaning it is a place where you can find an extensive collection of Board games from family classics such as risk and Settlers of Catan to more obscure title's that are a lot of fun. Then they also offer tabletop gaming for such things as Dungeons & Dragons/ Pathfinder to Warmachine/ Warhammer. Maybe you enjoy card games? Magic the Gathering is the biggest draw to Other Worlds and is also the main reason i go. Perhaps you prefer Comic Books? Other Worlds has those as well. Other Worlds also has a good selection of refreshing drinks available to consume along with various small snacks. The main thing that i like about Other Worlds vs other local hobby shops is that its clean and does not smell. The shop owner's name is Ron and he is a great guy to chat with and is very knowledgeable about every collectable in his store. He is a parent which is why he has spent so much time creating and setting up good kids programs and after school activities for many day and nights of the week. Such as the main draw School of Magic every Sunday. I bet your wondering what that is but its basically a class on learning to play Magic for young kids. Where kids can go and learn and play magic with other kid's. You might want to contact the store's website or call the store for further information. There is also Family fun night every Thursday where you can come bring in your favorite game or play one of the many available on the shelf. Whether if your a busy parent who needs a good safe environment to drop your kid off to have a great time or if your like me and just want to play in a Magic event. Other Worlds Games is a great store. It is in a good location near lots of food options and other cool places. The staff are super helpful and friendly and they have a great selection of cool games, comics, and Magic cards. It's a rainy Sunday afternoon, my roommate and I decide to make new MTG decks. We call Other World Games to see if they have a popular card in stock, they answer "yes" when asked how many, they answered "a ton" so we drive the 45 minutes to get there. They gave us a big box and said it might be in there, we looked for 30 minutes to find only 1 of the cards promised on the phone. Only once were we helped since the young man helping us was in a game and ignored us completely. When being rung up they did not check the price and gave it to is for a steal. This lazy work ethic is embarrassing and does not make up for the rude customer service. Will not go back to this hole in the wall. read more

I was in town for business and had an afternoon to kill. Being the gamer that I am I found Other World Games and literally spent hours in the place. I have never met a more friendlier group of folks! Don't ask if the person at the counter is the owner. He will argue with you about his station. Additionally, the pictures are outdated. He has no high end cards, dances around his pricing and his sealed product pricing is outrageous! All in all, I would rather give my business to other card shops who are friendly with great customer relations. I do support local hobby shops and buy every time I'm in one. I hope you take the $27 I spent and invest it into something you are good at...like a suit and applying for a position with the DMV. read more

I have been putting off writing this review as I'm not sure what good it will do. Of the 18 reviews of this business 'not used in rating' on yelp there are eleven one-star reviews- many of them reporting harsh treatment. So, mine will probably join those others. However, I think folks should be warned that this game store can be a caustic experience if you have young preteens just starting in the gaming world. About a month ago I picked up three 11-13yr olds who were standing outside in the rain and shaking with humiliation. Ron had asked them to leave and never return and had insulted one of their physical actions/ bodily smells. They all stated that they had not been violent, used swear words or been otherwise inappropriate but had been upset and had questions about the judging of a game. They also stated that after they had gone outside Ron had come out after them and insulted him more. A couple weeks later when I called to ask him about it, Ron told me he was too busy to talk about it (at noon on a Tuesday) and when I persisted and told him I thought he had been intimidating to a child he told me he had every right to, and then told me that people like me were not worth having as customers. So- be warned, obviously a certain crowd does like this store, but you might want to think about what your kids might witness or be subjected to. read more

It is hard to pinpoint the exact reason why this store is disappointing but whenever I go in there I become less and less interested in going back. The first time I went, it was a great experience. The employee was helpful and knew what he was talking about. I returned a few months later and the same guy was there and it was a good experience again except the owner, Ron, was there also. I had maybe ten bulk magic cards that were posted at bulk prices that he individually looked up and altered the price usually by marking it up a dime. I thought nothing of it but since then I have noticed a disturbing trend in the store. People don't like it. Ron does great with parents and there are kids always around but teenagers and people in there twenties are treated like garbage not worth his time. He constantly berates regulars with rude jokes and snarky comments because they can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on cards or games. His employees are constantly quitting because he is horrible to work for apparently. I personally have felt judge and treated like a thief because of my age without ever having stolen anything from the store. Ron has fostered a toxic community space to play games in and really needs to facilitate a more comfortable environment for everyone. If I need something this is the last place I go to see if they have it and that's exceptional considering how it is the closest store to me that stocks products I am interested in. Also, this is a warning to parents: the store owner pays no mind to the things being said in front of children. I have heard grown men spewing vulgarity in front of 8 year olds multiple times without anyone stepping in. If I'm gonna be treated like a criminal by a store owner who lets grown men who are able to spend more money than me talk about sexually explicit things in front of children's, then why would I go back? The double standards enacted by Ron are despicable. This place does not warrant anyone's business regardless of convenience or the front it puts up of being a friendly, local small business. read more
