Yelping about Canada in a Basket for me is akin to a public service announcement for tourists. This…read moretiny store located in the Market Building of the Byward Market should be a definite stop for anyone looking to bring home Canadian goods, whether you are a foreigner or Canadian. Jammed into every shelf and corner and carousel display of this store are goodies native to Canada. You won't find cheap souvenir T shirts here but items like local honey from numerous provinces, Saskatchewan jams, bison pate, Ice wine flavored teas--a truly dazzling assortment of authentic Canadian goods, for every budget, and from the familiar to the different. If your loved ones have had enough of maple, impress them with Ice-wine syrup then. Unlike the Ottawa duty free shop, which only has the cheaper version, Canada in a Basket has the premium one also. It must be good since I bought it and sis hasn't shared any with me. If you have an OCD friend you need relief from for a few hours, bring them here and let your buddy pore through what seems like an endless array of items, food items, jewelry, clothing etc. While I I don't envy the proprietor at inventory time, I am grateful she took the time to amass such an array of uniquely wonderful items. Canada in a Basket will even customize a basket for you and ship it, hence the name. Seriously, there was so much here, I was actually getting dizzy just looking at a few shelves of jams, and I hadn't even ventured to the Byward Market bars prior. You don't need to agonize over the meager pickings at the airport duty free shop. Come to this fun place to shop for Canadian souvenirs.

I don't know if that would fly in a country where Spanish is the official language (or one of the official languages), but we're in Canada, so here we are. I actually find it kinda funny, but for the rest of my review I'll just refer to it as "the store" because I don't want any abuelas upset with me, lol. So the store is a Mexican grocery store. They sell mostly shelf-stable goods, but have a few refrigerated items. They have a good selection of Mexican candies, including 3 different flavours of Pulparindo! They didn't have Extra Hot though :( I love the sweet, sour and spicy flavours of Mexican candies! The candies I looked at all had their "best before" dates in the future, which I liked, and means they have good turnover of merchandise. I find that many international grocery stores have products past their "best before" dates, but I didn't see that at this store. There's a sign in the window that advertises they also sell prepared foods, but no prices. They had lots of dried peppers, and they also had tortillas. Oh and lots of sauces. There are not a lot of Latin American grocery stores in Ottawa, so I'm happy to see this store open up. The store opened in 2021. The owner of the store also owns 2 restaurants nearby: Margarita, and Mona's Taqueria. Staff were friendly and courteous. Street parking only.

There's a selection of dried chilies in the front and a large selection of various items for the pantry. From beans, chilies, spices, coconut milk, hot sauces, etc There's also a bunch of snacks that I've probably never tried. There's a freezer with some nice frozen goods. I walked out with a few tamales to try. Check it out if you're in the area!

It is owned by a lovely married couple and let me tell you they sure know their stuff when it comes to oils and balsamics !! Go in, ask questions, smell and taste the delicious unique things they have to offer, everything and anything from citrus, grassy and herbs! I personally left with a delicious 18 year aged balsamic dressing and an absolutely amazing mushroom and herb infused extra virgin olive oil. Amazing experience, (with parking) and i will be back very soon! Also reasonably priced 14$ for a 200 ml bottle of delicious actually health beneficial oil I am/ WAS the kind of person who avoided oil like the plague and only cooked with water & spices & i also always HATED balsamic vinegars but today really opened up my eyes and my pallet so if you actually like oil & balsamic you MUST go here! 5 stars

The Unrefined Olive is an Olive Oil and Vinegar merchant. Sounds a bit boring right? It isn't!…read more When you walk in, you notice the cleanliness and orderliness of the store. High tables neatly stacked with round stainless steel containers - holding either olive oil or vinegar. What's fun about this is - you can taste test! The staff is knowledgeable. They explain how the store works, what the general groupings are - and if you ask, will also give recommendations. We ended up with a while balsamic vinegar infused with pear - which, we are told, is wonderful on salad even without an oil. There are many many choices. Go check it out. This is (to me) a bit of a gourmet heaven - so go in with the right mindset for prices. (What I'm telling you: It's not inexpensive - but I think based on the product and service that it's not out of the realm of reality either.) Besides the Olive Oil and Vinegar, they have a small selection of other high quality cooking oils. Might be good to go in with a bit of a plan - for example - know that you are looking for an oil for dipping bread... or for salad... or for cooking - otherwise you may have a hard time making a choice. Would I return: Yes Would I recommend: Yes

The store sells balsamic vinegars and olive oils in a variety of cool flavours such as Green Apple balsamic vinegar and Citrus Habanero olive oil. Their products are similar to those of The Unrefined Olive, which I have been to a few times. My husband and I received a gift card for Aurelius from a friend of ours for Christmas, so that's actually what brought us into the store. We ended up getting 3 small bottles ($8.99 each). They were 60ml bottles. The larger bottles are a better deal since you get 200ml for $17.99, but we wanted to try a greater variety of flavours. We got a Pear white balsamic, a Mango dark balsamic and a Smoked Hickory olive oil. The mango balsamic vinegar was sweet and full of potent mango flavour and aroma. The pear balsamic vinegar was just as good as the mango one. The pear flavour was strong. I would drizzle these on salads unadulterated, lol. No oil, no other spices, just the vinegar, and it made salads delicious. The Hickory smoked olive oil is phenomenal. It has a potent smokey aroma. I like adding it to roasted Brussels sprouts. It gives it that smokey flavour without having to add artery-clogging bacon, lol. Service was courteous and friendly. The store is a good size, but only the front section is accessible to customers. The back is for staff only. They had some nice displays at the front, with several packages ready for gifting. We walked over, but it's street parking only, which is not surprising for businesses in Wellington West. I would say that street parking is not that hard to find in the area, but you may have to park on a side street and walk over, and parking might be more difficult to find in the winter when the streets are narrowed by snow banks.
