This is an interesting little German-ish place with a heavy emphasis on sausages. They're in what was clearly once a residential home that has been converted to a restaurant; a roll-up front window (like a transparent garage door!) across the whole front of the restaurant means the entire thing is open to the air during good weather, a great option with covid spiking up again. And the side of the building is a garden and patio - literally both, with umbrellas and picnic tables on a grassy lawn area, but flower beds and vegetable beds lining the sides and clearly used for growing local fresh food. While the menu is a little limited and I found the schnitzel to be a little on the tasteless side, they have the best fish and chips I've had in Edmonton and if you like German style sausages you will have plenty to choose from. read more

Otto was always a five star experience for us, but our last few dinners there since the menu changes have not quite met the bar. That said, the food is still delicious and worth a visit if you haven't been. We love the currywurst - and the kitchen is always happy to substitute a sausage of your choice (I recommend the Otto as the melted Gouda in the sausage adds a nice creamy texture to the sweet tomato sauce). The smoked Mac and Cheese is always a must. Bring your friends and be prepared to share as they serve up family style. I think the thing the new menu lacks compared to the former is Schnitzel Saturday specials - the regular schnitzel is fine but the old specials were so creative and always bangers. Also make sure you go early, especially on Saturday, as the house sells out of a lot of the items, often before 6 or 7 lately. read more

Lots of great street parking, easy to find with Google Maps. Area is a little sketchy in the evening but at least you can park close. Lots of plexiglass between tables but feels tight and was quite noisy. Families, dates, and groups all there. We were a table of 8 who shared a bunch of appetizers and all got our own sausages. My maple sausage was good and a decent price for the size. The Otto sausage was better! Full of gooey cheese in the middle. I opted out of the +$2 bun and was happy with that choice as the buns were nothing special and a lot of bread. I opted in for the curry ketchup and was not disappointed - worth it. They add it right on top of the sausage so if you're unsure I would ask for it on the side. Make sure to get sides otherwise you literally get 1 sausage for dinner. Pretzel bun appetizer was nice but not something I'd order again. The dip with it was really strong horseradish. The mac and cheese was delicious and made a great side. The Brussel sprouts were not what was expected. They were shredded and covered in a zesty dressing which wasn't bad but probably not my favorite way to eat them. I even tried a bite of the special schnitzel and it was Delicious, very saucy, not too spicy but very flavorful, breading was lovely and it was moist. Drink menu was extensive and my friends loved the variety and tried quite a few. The coffee ones were a real hit. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert. Bathrooms are just a toilet and communal sinks near the dining room - too close to other diners for my liking but everything was clean and there was a baby changing table in my bathroom. I've had Otto bookmarked for quite awhile and finally got there recently. The reviews are true, the food is amazing, the atmosphere is hip and inclusive; babies, toddlers, hipcool people, boomers and old...all brought together in an old historic neighbourhood with a modern comfortable restaurant that opens onto the street. We had sausage, sauerkraut, pickles, vegetables, and coleslaw. Pickles and coleslaw were crisp. Sausage was savoury. Vegetables and sauerkraut were tender and flavorful. When I first heard about Alberta Avenue's Otto I couldn't help but draw comparisons to WVRST in Toronto. What I didn't expect is that Otto would be doing it better. Named Best Family Dining 2019 and Best Neighbourhood Gem 2020 by Avenue Magazine, this was a place that I had to try. Self-described as a neighbourhood meeting place, this restaurant is all about large communal tables and family-style plates. There's a German bierhalle type of vibe to the place but it's also more current than that. I visited on a Saturday evening and was excited to try it all! The interior of the restaurant is laid-back and easy with blond woods, school house chairs, and giant white letters that spell OTTO on the cinder block wall. It's also bright and airy, with light flooding in from the open garage-style door. If you would prefer a total outdoor experience, you can opt to dine in their adjacent garden - which is gorgeous. Picnic tables are fully surrounded by a bounty of vegetable patches, fruit trees, and flowers. On a nice day, I could imagine no better place to enjoy a meal. Suffice to say, the garden is where I found myself seated. The people working at Otto are very warm and friendly, clearly taking pride in their restaurant. The beautiful weather called for a cocktail and I easily chose the Cherry Gin Collins (Eau Claire cherry gin, sour cherries, lemon juice, sparkling water - $9.00)... I was sitting under a cherry tree, after all. Refreshing and playfully effervescent, this seemed like the ideal beverage. First, because gin is a bit of a "thing" at Otto, and second, the aforementioned cherry tree atmosphere. This drink was sweet and tart and I found that it went well with everything. Speaking of gin, Otto does gin flights which feature four carefully curated varietals. What caught my eye is that one of the included gins is STUMP Coastal Forest Gin, a type that I have previously enjoyed. I'll need to try a flight the next time that I visit! The main thing to eat is sausages, made fresh in-house, using responsibly sourced Alberta-only meat. The regular menu boasts five different types to choose from (there's even a vegan one!) and there are usually two or three special ones. There are also a bunch of sides to consider, six of them, and they all sound like excellent options as well. I began to build the perfect plate. Otto Sausage ($9.00), Smoked Mac & Cheese ($8.00 for small), Braised Red Cabbage ($7.00), and Brussel Sprouts ($7.00). The board arrived, laid out in all of it's appetizing glory. Of course I had to try the restaurant's namesake sausage (Sylvan Star smoked gouda, caraway and garlic). This sausage was delicious. It was incredibly juicy and simply oozing with cheese. So much flavour! Probably one of the best sausages that I've ever eaten and it had a lot to do with how well it was cooked (it wasn't dry at all). A must-order. I was very impressed by each of the sides as well. They can sometimes end up as an afterthought but in this case each one of them was expertly prepared. The mac & cheese (with caramelized onion) was such a wonderful version of this simple dish. Super cheesy, each bite exploded with a smokey flavour that wasn't overdone. Maybe some of the best mac & cheese in town?? The red cabbage (caraway, clove and juniper) is a very traditional German dish that I happen to be obsessed with. It tastes like Christmas and this version was slightly bitter with a finish of warm spices. Lovely! Finally, the brussel sprouts (sautéed with sweet mustard glaze, apples and onions) were light and very fresh. The sweetness from the crisp apples created a beautiful balance. This whole entire board of food was a giant win in my books. But there was more! We also ordered the Currywurst (The Allspiced Beef Bratwurst served with sweet curry sauce and garlic-herb fries - $18.00) from the Large Plates section of the menu because I ate currywurst in Berlin and loved it... And also because more sausages. So what is currywurst? It's a German fast food dish that consists of steamed then fried sausage, cut into bite-sized chunks, and served with curry ketchup on top. It is typically served with fries covered in mayo. The version at Otto is clearly a more elevated take on the dish, which I wasn't upset about. The only thing that I found myself missing was the specific preparation of steaming and frying the sausage. However, the bratwurst (onion, lemon and parsley) was quite tasty. Denser than the Otto, this one was packed with savoury bold flavours and was still juicy. The ketchup was promoted to a fresh curry sauce, similar to a homemade fruit ketchup with a spicy twist. Part of me missed the down 'n dirty regular ketchup (which they also can serve you!) but I can certainly appreciate that this was much nicer. The fries were great too, cooked to a perfect golden-brown. It was imperative that I try Otto's Crème Brûlée ($8.00) because this is the dessert that they are known for. It's hard to put a label on what Otto is but I like the concept a lot. A casual place to grab a bite to eat along with a carefully crafted, local beer selection (hello Blindman Brewery kettle sour). Love the sliding garage door that they open when the weather is being co-operative. The owner is a very friendly guy and introduced himself, chatted with all the tables and thanked us for stopping by. Don't see that type of hospitality too often these days. The menu is quite simple with sausages provided by FUGE Fine Meat and some side dishes. You can upgrade your sausage to make it more substantial by opting for a bun or making it into a currywurst meal. - Dandy sour ($9.00 pint) - spotted this up on their blackboard. Anything with a sour, I'm game especially since I've been wanting to pay a visit to Dandy's Brewery in Calgary. Pretty light with a slight tang. - Currywurst with fries ($13.00) - we were able to sub in the sausage of the day, the ramp wild onion, instead of the beef bratwurst it normally comes with. In an area that is very hard to believe, you find this gem! The sign is a bit inconspicuous and you may pass the place and miss it. That's what happened to us. When you're inside, you will see a well designed place, with a very welcoming atmosphere and awesome staff with smiles on their faces! The lighting and decoration were very appealing and the first impression was pretty good. Then we started with our drinks which were all awesome. Mine was "Scandinavian Lady" and I enjoyed it a lot! Then I think our group pretty much picked all the sausages on the menu with Mac and cheese, fries, deep fried cauliflower and beets for the sides! Everything was high quality, delicious and well presented. Then we had creme brûlée for dessert. I enjoyed every single aspect of this experience and I'm sure I will go back there a lot. We took an Uber to go there so I'm not sure if parking may be an issue or not but I noticed that on the street, south of the place, you may find spots to park your car. This was our second time visiting Otto and we decided to dine here on a Monday where the sausages are on special for $7 (regular price $9-$10). We tried a variety of pork sausages and chicken sausages, along with coleslaw. Our friends tried the smoked mac and cheese. Our food was great and our friends raved about the mac and cheese. Sundays are a great day to visit Otto as they have their kid's meals on for $5. $5 gets your child a delicious juicy Otto dog, plus fries, apple slices and a drink. Beat that! The space is cozy and functional with tons of natural light streaming in from their front windows. Service is exceptional and friendly. Everywhere we looked we saw tables of families with little ones who came to take advantage of the Sunday special. I opted for the Thai Green Curry Sausage while my husband chose the Chorizo. Hands down, the Chorizo is the winner - you can't beat the flavours in the chorizo or the porky goodness! Hahaha Fries are delicious and fresh. Great food! The location is not in a very high traffic/popular part of town which is kind of nice. The place inside is quite small. It might be best to book a table if you plan on visiting during busy hours. I had the maple sausage which was my favourite. I wasn't a fan of the curry flavoured sausage so much. The mac n cheese was delicious and probably the best restaurant mac n cheese I've ever had. The fries were delicious especially with the sauce it came with. I wish they would've given my friend and I two pickles instead of 1 tiny one to share. I thought that was a bit odd but oh well. The price point was good. Call and ask what hours that is though, some establishments have limited family hours. It is great to sit with the patio door open on a nice summer evening (when the wasps aren't trying to steal your food or kill you). We found the prices reasonable, the drinks cold and flowing. Gluten free? Celiac? They can accommodate you. I don't know that you can eat every sausage on the menu, but the ones you can... were tasty. Fries - I think it's a shared fryer - and your sensitivity is yours to judge. Just ask when you order. They are super helpful. Dessert... well, out of 3, if you're celiac or gluten intolerant, you CAN EAT TWO! Creme Brule, and Pinocchio ice cream - however again, the tub might not be your kind of gluten free "clean", so judge your risk and order accordingly. I LOVE creme brule... love love love, so that's an easy choice for me. The website... it's a little too modern. I LoVE this gem. It's a great local watering hole inviting some revitalization in the area. Friends of mine and I met here after work on a Monday. It was a beautiful sunny day so the garage doors were open allowing for a quasi enclosed patio. The owner was super friendly and came to greet us and was super approachable. I believe that his name is Ed. Our server was equally delightful and did a good job of explaining the beers that were on special as well as the sausages. That day, all sausages were on for $6 as well as some good local beers. They serve everything family style so you can easily share with your friends. We ordered the Vegan Sausage, the Otto Dog and the Beef Bratwurst. All were delicious! So much flavour in each bite. We also had a side order of the fries and coleslaw - equally delicious! My husband and I went to Otto one night to get away from the house. Really enjoyed the open concept to the restaurant, and the warm lively atmosphere. Our server was prompt and we got our order in a timely matter. I ordered a beer flight and my husband and I decided to split three sausages and two sides. The sausages we ordered were the Merguez - Lamb and beef. -Earthy, peppered, spice laden and meaty, the merguez's aromatics are akin to walking through a spice market. The harissa paste is produced with local chili and a proprietary blend of herbs, spices and garlic. The Italian Fennel This sausage screams ITALY! Imported Calabrian chili flakes combine copious amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon to create a sausage that is undeniably Italian. Toasted fennel seeds, garlic and coriander are the backbone if thus medium spiced sausage. And also a seasonal sausage....which at this point I can't remember. We also ordered a side of fries tossed in herb butter and creamy dill coleslaw. All the sausages were excellent, but I think we liked the merguez the best. That being said, there seemed to be a lot of side street and residential parking. The menu is small which I liked. I tried the otto and the gouda with the spices sausage was great! The fries were ok and the Mac and cheese was not bad. The sides overall weren't overwhelming. Owned by former Culina partner Ed Donszelmann, Otto quietly opened it's doors late December with a menu dedicated to sausages and local craft beers. Being of Dutch heritage, Ed hoped for Otto to be a neighborhood meeting place modelled after restaurants found in Amsterdam and throughout Europe. In an unassuming location, Otto sits on the main floor of a small apartment complex. This 50 seat restaurant features booths, multiple tables, and a large community table flanked by classic wooden classroom chairs. The decor may be simple, but the homey touches up at the bar give the space a cozy feel. Craft beers are really starting to take off in Alberta, given the number of microbreweries that have popped up in the last few years. As a restaurant specializing in sausages and beers, you can bet Otto has an extensive beer list - one which primarily serves Alberta brews. Lagers, ales, IPAs - the list goes on and there is a beer for every taste. Alternatively there is a small, expertly picked wine list for non-beer drinkers. As for the menu, sausages make up the bulk of the offerings. Otto currently has six signature offerings on the menu made locally by Steve Furgiuele of Fuge Fine Meats. All sausages are reasonably priced at $7 and are served with a small side of sauerkraut and your choice of mustard (yellow, dijon, or hopped). If you're looking for something more substantial add a bun and a pickle with your sausage for an additional $2. On the night of our visit we chose to sample a range of sausages, including a special they had for the evening. Everything arrived on a platter served family-style, making the meal interactive for our group. We ordered the American Andouille, Chorizo Verde, Italian Fennel, Merguez, the OTTO Dog, and the Cornbread Boudin. Each sausage was well spiced and had it's own unique characteristics. What I really appreciated was the fine balance of meat to fat, lending to a moist but not overly fatty sausage. The men at the table unanimously named the Cornbread Boudin sausage their favourite due to the varying textures and light sweetness, but my favourite had to be the OTTO dog. It had great texture and the garlic combined well with the melted, oozy gouda. Our board was also accompanied by mustard and housemade sauerkraut and pickles. While the components were great on their own and didn't have overpowering flavours, I did find that they did compete with some of the flavours in the sausages. I actually found myself using them more as a palate cleanser in-between the different sausages, allowing me to go from one style to the next without mixing the flavours together. As for sides, Otto offers seven options, most of which you would typically find as accompaniments to sausages or hot dogs. We opted for the mac & cheese ($6 sm/$10 lg), potato salad ($5 sm/$9 lg), and sunchokes ($8). The mac & cheese was flavourful and saucy and the potato salad was a nice side, but what caught us off guard were the sunchokes. Sunchokes are highly overlooked as a root vegetable and while I'm not particularly a huge fan, Ed said we had to try them. They were delicious - lightly seasoned and roasted perfectly for a nice crunch, the pairing with fermented tomato salsa makes these a must have. Our last dish of the evening was the Currywurst with fries ($12), one that our German friend was particularly excited for. Currywurst is a common street food found in Berlin, so he was hoping that Otto's iteration would remind him of home. Offered sweet or hot, we went with the former and weren't disappointed. The sweet curried ketchup was well seasoned and went well with the bratwurst and crispy fries. Despite visiting on an extremely busy night, our service was met with a smile and we had no complaints with our food. Otto is serving up great dishes at affordable prices, making it a great addition to the neighborhood. It's a casual spot for dinner (and maybe lunch soon!), and high chairs make it easy to bring the family down for a no-frills meal. What an excellent dining experience. On a cold February evening I took my wife for an early Valentine's dinner a few days before the big day. Otto was the one and only choice as I tried stopping by for lunch before knowing their hours. This night certainly made up for that experience. We deliberately waited till 7:30 in hopes that we would miss the supper crowd. As we walked in we found the place buzzing. Every seat was full and we were a little worried we would be turned away. A gentleman walked up holding a baby in his arms. I recognized the face from a review in the paper and knew this was the owner. From what I could tell he was holding the infant for the group dining nearby. How kind was that? As he spoke, I spoke too and we both mentioned sitting at the bar which were the only open seats in the house. The venue is very attractive with rough brick, cinder block and wood accents everywhere. The open bathroom concept was interesting especially since our seats at the bar saw right in! The menu is simple with sausages, sides, desserts and drinks. We ordered a chorizo which well cooked (pickle and sauerkraut on the side), the mac & cheese which had a great smoky flavour and the currywurst on a bed of fries which I thought was excellent but my wife thought had too much onion. The highlight of the night was a side on special which consisted of beets, arugula and a drizzled sweet sauce over goat cheese. What a great combination! We recommended the dish be added to the main menu. The portions were such that we took the equivalent of a full meal home (except the beets - those were long gone). I'm so happy my friend suggested Otto for a girls dinner. It was a warmish night, so the garage door was open to the sidewalk. We were initially seated near the front, but the staff was kind enough to move us to a bigger and more quiet table near the back. The beer list is fantastic, with tons of local beers and ciders to try. Prices are reasonable. But the star of the show was the food. Everything is served family style. We had the Otto sausage and the maple sausage with fries, the Mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts. Honestly, everything was so incredibly good. The sausages were so flavorful (the menguez was our fave), the coleslaw was fresh and crisp, with a lot of dill and not too much dressing. The mac and cheese was just ok, and the jalapeno and leek sauce was amazing - a perfect accompianment to the chicken. Overall we were impressed, but it wasn't quite enough food for 2 hungry diners, so we ordered second dinner! For our second time around we got the Otto sausage and fries. The Otto was underwhelming, especially after the insane flavour of the first 2 sausages. I will definitely go back, and I'll try it on a bun to perhaps be more filling. One of the best meat place, their Mac and cheese are awesome! I will definitely go back and that comment for me is one of the highest that I can give lol. The waiter is friendly and the only thing I'm not 100% satisfied is the speed they bring your food for you but I guess you have to grill it so everything kinda make sense and this fact won't contribute to anything bad regarding their food! read more

I went there for a party. It was the perfect size of restaurant for it. Not too big where you can't feel intimate and not too small where you feel cramped. Everyone who works there are so friendly and know their menu. We were served 5 sausage that are all made there. Honestly the sausages are out of this world. So tasty. Out of our group we all agree there was one that we didn't enjoy as much because we felt it was too gamy but the rest were so tasty. We tried the Mac and cheese. It was scrumptious. Don't think it's your normal Mac and cheese, it's made with smoked gouda. I really recommend it and the fries are so good, they come with a sauce on the side. It taste garlicky. Otto is a great community restaurant and local hang out that offers incredible sausage, fries and locally brewed beers. I have gone to Otto at least three times and haven't ever walked away hungry or not satisfied. The food is meant to share and the menu offers st least eight sausage options and three or four side meal options. Vegan options are also available. The Otto sausage is my favourite, very tasty and favourable. There are also many spicy options, something for everyone. I recommend going here for dinner before a football game and the walking to the game after the meal. It's only a 20 min walk. read more

Straight up epic!! The food was simply put amazing, if you're into sausages what are you waiting for. OTTO roughly seats 50, they have 3 large communal tables down the middle of the restaurant and 3 large booths on the side. The front of the restaurant is large garage door that can be opened in the summer. We were a large party but they easily accommodated us all. The food comes out family style but they can adjust for individual plates as well. Honestly I thought about that meal for a good few days afterward. Fantastic dinning experience that can't be missed. I've visited this gastropub as it was denominated few times by now, and every time I have the same feeling, what a great idea! You don't need to have super big tables or huge space to make something great and Otto owner got it right. Sausages are delicious, the beer is really good, the sides are tasty, but the atmosphere is amazing. I have tried the OTTO Dog, Maple-Sage Bratwurst, the Chorizo Verde, sorry, this one was not very Mexican and the Italian Fennel. The deep fried cauliflower is my favorite slide. I go to ottos at least a few times a month and I'm always welcomed by the best crew. Ed and his team are so friendly and genuinely inquire about how life is going in that moment. I love that the menu is always creatively changing and the beer list is pouring out with local craft. The Mac and cheese and Brussel sprouts are my fave, and of course the sausages that get fused with different spices recipes. One of my fave places to go hang out! read more
