    Cappucino

I had breakfast at Otto's while staying at the Kissell hotel. Overall, it was just OK. Some of the things I was excited to try based on other reviews (like the donuts) were no longer on the menu. I had a cappuccino and the mushroom toast with a poached egg on top. My capp was lukewarm and I don't know, something about it just tasted a little funky. The mushroom toast was mediocre and the bread was already super soggy when I received it. The egg was cooked properly though and the bar service was great. I was in a hurry, so I just took a few bites and got the check. I'd likely opt to eat somewhere outside of the hotel next time.

Has Smashburger with fries and a mocktail

Otto's is located in the lobby of the Kissel Hotel. The building was built in the 1910s as a car show room for Kissel cars. When we entered the building I was impressed with the design, the restaurant is tucked in to a corner of the lobby with windows showcasing Broadway. We came here for Thanksgiving dinner. Surprisingly the restaurant was empty. When we came in t there was only one couple sitting at a table. After they left we were the only customers. The menu was limited on this holiday however; there was an option of a turkey dinner with all the fixings. I was sure I could not eat all the food, so I looked for something else. After some switching back and forth I decided on a smash burger with fries. I usually find smash burgers to be over cooked, not here it was tasty, still juicy, and not well done. I am not sure if it was the bacon jam or house sauce but I really enjoyed the burger. The French fries were great. I enjoyed a cocktail, I am not sore which one I ended up with, and they were out of ingredients of my first choice. My friends ordered truffle Mac and cheese and fish and chips and shared Brussels sprouts. They were both happy with their meals When I left, I paid attention to all the buildings; this area was once home to many different car show rooms. I was happy to see that they are still standing; some even had the names of cars that have faded in to history.

Would give it 3.5 if I could. Was hungry and didn't feel like leaving the hotel. We ordered a salad, deviled eggs, fries, impossible bolognese, Brussels sprouts, expresso martini, chocolate tort, and gelato. Food was mediocre, but service was really slow. Everything took a long time (likely the kitchen, my drink came out when almost all my food had been served). Deviled eggs was told there are 6 pieces, came out with 4. Fries were the best part and maybe Brussels sprouts, salad was basic and too oily, expresso martini was decent. The dessert was better - portions were very big in this area. Think there's room for improvement from staff. Ambiance was nice - decor and design led us to expect a lot more. We had breakfast here the next AM as well. French toast - seemed kinda soggy, breakfast burrito was decent, avocado toast was literally just slices of avocado. Breakfast was better than dinner.

Stayed in the hotel upstairs and came down for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. Emily, our server was very nice and helpful in our choices. We decided to get a mocha, matcha, egg breakfast, and mushroom toast. Drinks were yummy, the matcha was perfectly sweetened and Mocha was standard. The mushroom toast was alright, kind of flavorless but my eggs, sausage, and toast breakfast was great. Loved the interior. Would come back if I am staying at the Kissel!

    6oz Filet Oscar

I came here for to try their ORW26 menu and this was my first time ever at Otto's as well. Their ORW26 menu items sounded so very attractive, and they definitely did not disappoint! The royal toast and the 6oz filet Oscar were easily my favorites. The royal toast was very flavorful and super delicious! The filet mignon was also so very tender and yummy; I was almost smiling the whole time while eating it. The paired béarnaise sauce also goes amazingly well with the crab meat and the mashed potato. I love having that trio of goodness in one bite . The Dubai chocolate macaron was okay; it's on the dryer side. I am a dark chocolate lover, but somehow this macaron tasted a little too heavy/overloaded. The abundance of shredded phyllo is appreciated though! (Perhaps it wasn't the best dessert choice to pair with the steak.) I look forward to their ORW27 menu. :)

This place gets a 1 star because I couldn't give it a zero. I am going to stay don't believe photos. Anyone can take nice pictures and make something look more than what it is. Hence, I fell for the banana in the tailpipe with this one. Yeah, that fisheye lens used is deceptive like a mofo. While waiting for the third person in our little soirée, I walk over to get checked in. I had been getting reminders regarding the upcoming reservations at Otto's, so when there was no one in sight to check up is- it was odd. I walked up to the bar and asked about a table for 3 and the bartender advised for us to seat ourselves. The tables were dirty so we asked if someone could come and clean them. She told us to sit at the table that was next to the one that we wanted because it was clean. No it wasn't. That part. She came over to wipe the table down and to bring over menus. As she is handing us the menus, she told us that we had to come up to the bar and place the order because the server(s) called in sick. Hm. Where they do that at. Oh there at Otto's! Needless to say we were Outta Otto's. And not looking back. A horrible first impression and start to a birthday celebration. We had to find a real place suitable for a celebration. This wasn't it and won't ever be it.

buttermilk fried chicken & waffles, county line breakfast bowl
    Anna S.

Stayed here at the Kissel so decided to try out their breakfast. A colleague ordered salmon with their morning bowl - they had forgotten the additional salmon so she told them to just remove it from the bill. They weren't actually able to remove the cost of the salmon from the bill for some reason - instead, they just said that we could order something of the equivalent value. This was slightly annoying - there wasn't anything else we really wanted so it was inconvenient to have to come up with something. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles - and it was solid. The fried chicken was a tad on the saltier side, but the dish was still good. Overall, not bad for a hotel restaurant - though I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to eat here.

Food was sub par. First time in, for Oakland Restaurant week. I live close enough to come frequently. I tried to visit previously and no one was present in the restaurant area. The signature drink imo is terrible. "The town Tribute" the worst cocktail I have had in Oakland. The old fashion was delicious and Quinn was a fantastic bar tender. The kitchen really let her down. But she smiled and had a great demeanor through it. A real professional and a real person. Without her this would be a one star review. Flavorless rock hard chicken. Flavors of grease and oil only. No seasoning and a terrible fry. Mac was velveta shells level. Slightly passable was the kale with bacon. Chocolate bread pudding was great. Best thing we had. If coming though hit up Quinn for a drink and then roll on for food.

The food was okay. They didn't have the popular donuts as advertised on their menu. The ambiance was chilled and okay.

    Sea bass and Old Fashioned

Wow, how can service be so mixed - good and bad? The server came to my table after a long wait. Yes there was a gathering event crowd so the bar was noisy. While waiting, I check the online menu and then when asking about the food and bev, like if the cocktail is sweet or what bourbons - the answer is "I don't drink so not sure and let me check". Back the first time with partial info and then a drink menu. But what about the food menu since now you told me that menus online aren't always updated. Come back again but then tell me to order at the bar instead!?! Like are you incompetent or just annoying? I go to the bar to eat since clearly I'm not worthy. Bartender is great but now I feel sorry. How can she have to both make drinks and cover for lack of help. I even witnessed the same person pour a glass of red (end of bottle) and tell customer sorry no more. What do you want? Bartender comes to rescue and suggests another. Sea bass was good and flavorful but needed a bit more seasoning. On a bed of veggies and green purée. And yes there was more than Jim Bean (ick!) that I was told. 1 star for the server, 4 for the sea bass and 5 for the bartender plus extra for having to deal with the server's incompetence. At least try to fake it since you're not a busboy/gal.

Everything bagel with cream cheese, add salmon. Generous portion. Bagel was warm. Everything was fresh. Great post race snack.

Generous portion and fresh. Inside of hotel. Would return for bagel and salmon. Service was a little slow, short staffed. Ambiance of hotel was nice.

Very attentive and friendly staff. Was only there for a quick breakfast but the bowl I ordered was filling and delicious, latte was also pretty good. The design of the space was very chic and modern.

Does it have regular restaurant sit down waiter service? Or is it just a counter/cafe? Or can you eat at the bar?

There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

Had an amazing experience at Tallboy!…read more Sat at the bar on a sunny weekend and immediately loved the vibes. Bartenders were friendly and seemed to know a lot of the regulars. Can't quite describe it but it didn't feel like an SF bar, felt more open and like a community watering whole. On to the food and drinks. I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Man writing this has my mouth watering... definitely coming back for more dogs, drinks, and vibes!
