Out on a Limb is a great shopping addition to the Plaza District. It has been open about six months now. The owner, Cassie, is a very talented lady. She gets vintage clothes and then uses her sewing skills to recycle/upcycle them into cute current female fashions. She also does custom work. The clothing will particularly appeal to the younger crowd. She also has jewelry, scarves, gloves, purses and other things that have been recycled/upcycled by others as well. I am particularly fond of the purses made from men's' suit coats. I saw one several months ago that I really liked but that was too small to hold all stuff I keep in my purse. Cassie contacted the maker and requested that she make some purses in larger sizes too. Today I found one there that was the perfect size for me and was made out of material that will go with everything. Yes, I bought it for only $42 and just finished transferring all my stuff into it. The owner is on site every day, and she's a pleasure to get to visit with. I'm pretty sure I told her half my life story within three minutes of meeting her. This is one of the shops in the Plaza District that I find myself popping into all the time. Primarily, I find myself browsing their unique jewelry. For local, handmade statement pieces, this is one of your best bets in town. My favorites are the amethyst and turquoise pieces, but you're certain to find something you like, large or small. Currently there's a delicate little star necklace on one of the displays that I'd really like to go back and get for a girlfriend. I recently purchased a necklace on sale for $20 (marked down from its original $40 price tag), and when one of the links came undone, I went in to see if the owner could repair it. She fixed it quickly, without charge. This is also an excellent place to sniff and sample Twinkle Apothecary's wares. If you don't know Twinkle, you should. It's a local, handcrafted, plant-based, preservative free body and hair care company with which i.am.obsessed. https://twinkleapothecary.com/ Twinkle's products are mostly available online, but some of them are in local shops, and Out on a Limb is my favorite place to pick some up. I'm especially partial to the deodorants, but you may find you like the perfumes or dry shampoo even better. Samples in the shop are $4, which seems steep, but is a fair price to pay for a company driven by such ethical imperative. You can also find bath bombs (so many), cards, candles, artwork, bags, lip balms, and hand-stitched clothing at Out on a Limb. I'm frequently tempted by these sundries, but my what keeps me coming back are the jewelry and Twinkle toiletries. If you haven't stopped in, you should. This boutique is adorable. The owner collects great vintage finds and turns them into one-of-a-kind fashion pieces. I really like that they have styles for every size and shape and don't feel that I have to be a size 2 to browse her creations! Her jewelry is also fantastic. This store also carries various wares from local vendors. The store has artwork, bath and beauty products, and fashion accessories just to name a few. I recently purchased an "air plant" from Out on a Limb which is an cute little plant that requires no soil and less frequent watering. The owner was very helpful in explaining the care it would need and even provides a link on the store's website. The Plaza District was smaller than I expected (just three short blocks of vintage stores and restaurants, most of which are closed on Sundays), but it was nice to find Out on a Limb, an adorable shop that "upcycles" vintage clothing and creates something modern and unique. I'm so impressed with all of the beautiful handmade jewelry here. My sister is a huge fan of anything with crystals and gemstones, so this is the perfect place for me to get her gifts. The prices are all very reasonable too, plus you can sign up for emails to see when the sales are. The owner Cassie is very friendly as well. I stumbled into Out on a Limb after a failed attempt to try on a few clothing items at Collected Thread. In an attempt to buy more ethical clothing while simultaneously being able to still pay my rent, I've been trying this whole vintage thing out. Unsuccessfully, I might add, because I feel like vintage clothing is made for skinny and straight body types. Not this Latina. Enter OOAL. Allllllll the heart eye emojis. I didn't get the owners name, but she makes all the clothing there! Like sews it herself. There were upcycled pieces in ALL shapes and sizes. I tried on a ton of stuff and walked away with an awesome black skirt and a dress. It gave me hope that this whole secondhand second life clothing will work! I came on a weeknight and it wasn't busy thank God. Cause I've popped in here on a Saturday and got major anxiety. Fantastic little store. I initially went in to look for a gift for Mother's Day, but I also ended up buying a really well made bow tie as well! While most of the clothing is tailored towards women (no pun intended), there are also accessories, home decor, jewelry, and neat odd and ends (like beard oil and bath salts) for both men and women. It's refreshing to see upcycled accessories for men! I'll be coming back for another bow tie for sure. read more
