My boyfriend and I took the 3 hour tour with a fantastic guide named Jason, and 3 other couples. We saw bald eagles, falcons, star fish, and not once, but TWICE a little harbor seal popped his head up right near the bow of our kayak!! We lucked out, and I was the only inexperienced kayaker. Instead of breaking on the beach, everyone had enough energy to kayak out to a small island to walk around and take a break. In all we kayaked 5-6 miles, and Jason provided us with interesting wildlife facts and history about the islands. I would recommend this as a MUST DO if you are nature oriented and spending time on the island! read more

We hit the water yesterday (after me last-minute booking the day before) on a whale watching tour out of Orcas Island. We had a spectacular time! And yes, it is primarily because we saw a pod of transient orcas (not going to lie folks - seeing orcas in the wild is thrilling, mesmerizing and truly humbling )... but it was also a gorgeous day, we had a super friendly captain (Joe), a very knowledgeable naturalist (Ashley) and we saw other critters as well (seals, sea lions, thousands of migrating birds). We've used outer island four times over the past two years. Great experience each time. We've done whale watching twice, guided kayak tour and a water taxi/kayak rental to sucia. My husband and I spent an amazing 3+ hours with Captain Joe and Brian (customer relations guy & right hand man) . There were two boats going out, and we got on the larger of the two, the "Blackfish 2". There was a slight problem in that someone had locked the bathroom door from inside, so they let us know we could switch boats if we wanted to, but I'm so glad we didn't !! We found 2 Humpback whales who played with us for almost an hour !! They were just swimming circles around us, showing off and checking us out . It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen ! They were literally almost close enough to touch, they even went right under our boat ! Even Joe and Brian said that was a pretty unique experience !! Our lucky day.... ;-) In general, this company was excellent to deal with. They always responded to e-mails before our trip, and answered any questions we had. Once on board they were both extremely knowledgeable about the area, and the animals. I would HIGHLY recommend using this company for any tour, and will definitely be back next year ! read more

This was the most fun I've had in a long time! Yes, it was gray and windy and chilly and even rained some of the time, but, I saw whales!!!! :-) We had to travel about 60 miles into Canadian waters to find the transient killer whale pod, a group of six or seven, but our fantastic captain, Matt, tracked them down! And both he and our Naturalist, Chelsea, were full of awesome information about the local sea and wildlife, the islands, the history of the area, and were perfect hosts! If you have the opportunity to take a tour with this group - DO IT!!! read more

Awesome excursion! The people who work here are super friendly, very experienced and knowledgeable. Our guide made sure we saw lots of harbor seals and ochre starfish. We had an incredible whale watching trip where we had the fortune of seeing two Humpbacks diving around the boat, a pod of porpoises riding our wake and hanging out with a transient pod of Orcas. I think tour reviews can be directly related to how many animals are spotted, so I will try to be more realistic in my evaluation. I gave 4 stars as I thought the water taxi prices for a family of 4 to Sucia were too high. The trip there is exciting and fun and over too soon. But you pay dearly for it. We used Outer Island for kayak rentals, whale watching tours, and a water taxi to Sucia. We found them to be professional, kind, knowledgeable, and hard working. I highly recommend this outfit. We went on a 5pm whale watching tour based on their recommendation as the resident pod had been seen heading out to sea and most likely wouldn't be back for another day or two; meanwhile a transient pod had been spotted earlier in the day. We had an all-star / 5-star experience as we watched National Geographic in person. The male took down a porpoise right in front of the boat and side breached with it in its' mouth. No blood or guts, just nature happening. Awesome. May you too be so lucky. We also stayed at Smuggler's Resort, where this outfit operates out of. We had the luxury of moving our tour times around as necessary. It was an incredible week. read more

How lucky did we get?! I never dreamed we would see so many whales! Just 20 minutes out and we already had them in sight. They were so playful. Rolling around and flipping thier tails and spy hopping and blowing bubbles! And to top it off we went around so many of the islands I would not have seen if it weren't for this tour group. Lindsey and Captian T were knowledge and skilled. They were thrilled that we got to share this day of magic with them. Highly recommended. read more

Amazing experience with Outer Island. Saw a large pod of Orcas and a lone Minke whale circled our coat multiple times. The Captain, Matt, was top notch. Super knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. The boat size is optimal, since it only fits 13 guests, which makes for a more intimate viewing experience. Most other viewing boast are packed with tourists, which I would imagine is not nearly as enjoyable at OIE. We would go back in a heartbeat. read more

GROUPON BUYERS BEWARE! Just had a terrible experience with this company. We bought and booked a tour with our Groupons yesterday -- paid the extra $27+ fuel surcharge as listed in the fine print, and were issued a receipt via email saying we had three spaces. Everything seemed fine -- no issues. Then today I get a call from a rep from the company saying that she was only holding one spot for us until I could produce a second Groupon code. (Their system would only accept one at booking). I did not have the code immediately available, as it was a gift for my husband and was on his account, and she said they would not hold the reservation while I called him to retrieve this. Additionally, even though I read the fine print and went to the website to ensure 1) my infant could come, and 2) what her cost was (listed as FREE), she insisted that I needed to pay $40 extra to have her come along with. I explained they could not legally do this, provided the website path via email I took to show her infants are listed as free and there is no indication of any stipulations, etc. It did not matter. We had to pay the $40 extra to have our daughter go, because our Groupons were now non-refundable. I thought this was over, but then I received a call tonight from the manager cancelling our reservation altogether, unless I would say I was happy with the way things went. He refunded the fees they took from us directly, but our Groupons are non-fundable since they have been opened and the codes have been obtained. Just terrible and so dishonest. Now it's too late to book elsewhere, our money's tied up in the Groupons, and our anniversary is ruined. :( read more

We saw a humpback about 10 min into the ride. They communicate with other boats so we were able to find that one right away. Then we cruised around seeing other sea life nearby. It was really great. I like how they keep a good distance back not to disturb the whales as much. Well worth it! read more

I called to see what the process would be for bringing my guide dog with me and was told dogs were allowed on boats but only for private tours and was told it was for other passengers consideration. I reiterated this wasn't a pet, but a legal service dog and was told again that if I needed to bring my guide, I've have to pay the private tour price. While this is very much not legal, I'm at least glad I called, so I don't give this company money for a tour I cant' even enjoy as much as others. read more

Last year we went to Orcas Island for a few days. We had limited money, and basically zero beach access, so we decided to take an OUter Island whale watching trip. Absolute best decision ever! The crew couldn't have been nicer, or more accommodating. It had been foggy most of the morning, and still had thick pockets of it on the water. But, with their expertise, we did see orcas, enough to satisfy. As fantastic as seeing whale tails and fins was, my favorite part was the speed of the boat to and from the whales. Just getting the wind and fresh salty air was worth the trip. Highly recommended. read more

Wonderful trip! There were quite a few people booked for the evening tour we took, and we were a bit worried when we arrived that everyone was going to be crammed onto a boat. But they didn't! Instead, they broke up the parties into comfortable boat sizes, and really tried to group everyone by compatibility (ie family with small children on a different boat than younger couples). They also let you bring on your own refreshments and snacks, which we really enjoyed. Our guides, Bobby and Dylan, were absolutely amazing! Both were very knowledgeable about the wildlife. They made an effort to talk to everyone, learn everyone's name, answer questions, and maintain a positive vibe on the boat. Wonderful trip and a highlight of our vacation! THANK YOU :) read more

Outer Island Expeditions provided a great whale watching experience for us last summer. The boat ride (a very fast boat) was great fun in itself and we got to spend a lot of time watching a killer whale pod, some of them very up close. I had an amazing time seeing both the J-Pods and L-Pods of Orcas meeting up for the first time in months. All of the guides were very helpful and informative about all the different islands and the whales, seals, and goats :) (You will know what I mean if you take this tour). One other tip I could offer is BRING YOUR CAR, it's about 10 miles from the Ferry Terminal and its ~30 bucks each way in a taxi. And wear lots of layers! read more

We took a 4 hour fishing charter with Sky and had a superb time. Everything was taken care of from bait to licenses etc. and Sky even filleted our cod for us so we could take it home ready to cook. We almost covered the cost of the charter with haul of shrimp and cod we took home! And we had an unforgettable afternoon of fun. Will definitely do it again. Excellent outfit. My family and I absolutely loved this excursion. My 6 year old daughter is completely obsessed with Orcas so that's what lead us to explore this while in the Seattle area. If you are not interested in taking a 6 - 8 hour cruise this is your best option. The boat was very fast so it was a rough ride. I hated that part but my daughter and husband acted like it was a roller coaster so they loved every minute of the ride. Just be sure to take motion sickness medication before boarding (even if you are not prone to motion sickness). After a short ride, about an hour or so we found a family or sleeping orcas. It was great! The guides were very knowledgeable and made sure all on board were able to have enough time watching the animals. On the ride back to shore we saw an eagle's nest with a young eagle and tons of seals. All in all a great value especially if you are in a time crunch with other must-do sightseeing. read more

They were the perfect tour guides. They made sure everyone got the pictures they were looking for and just had an all around wonderful day. My friend who came with me from Connecticut wasn't sure she wanted to go! By the time the day was over we we're busy planning her next adventure out so she could come back with her grandsons!
