Can't say enough great things about this surf shop. Scott was fantastic and kind. Our instructor Michael was patient, relaxed, and got every single person in our group up for every run (all newbies). Felt entirely safe and trusted him throughout the whole process. Photos are 100% worth it too. For reference our group was two 41 year olds, two 17 year olds and one 13 year old. Surfing was the highlight of our trip! Everyone at Outrageous surf is so nice and welcoming! None of us had ever surfed before and they did amazing teaching us how to and were so patient with everyone. We all had so much fun, we weren't ready for it to end! These guys were awesome!! My husband, brother in law, niece (17) and daughter (11) all went surfing with them and had a great time!! Everyone got up, everyone had a great time. The owner Scott was great- he was so sweet with our little baby and just so accommodating for us! Surf was a bit bigger than usual so the girls had an instructor dedicated to them- they were both safe & comfortable. Junior was my husbands instructor- take about a ray of sunshine?! Junior knows everyone, was laughing and great the whole time! So encouraging! Next time I'll definitely be joining them... Maybe the baby will be old enough that he can come too!! read more

WOW! This place really is as good as it gets! We were recommended this spot from a local guy for a great place to learn to surf. We called the shop and spoke with Rhett and set up an appointment for the following day. We chose to have a private lesson so that we could get as many runs in as we could. Both of us had never surfed before and Rhett was super patient with us and allowed us to learn at our own pace instead of pushing us. He was super nice and very knowledgeable about the sport. We both got up multiple times during our lesson. Rhett made us feel like we were family there and the pictures that we got were TOTALLY worth it :) I would recommend them for any type of surf sport that you are looking for on the island. looked at yelp for who to choose, and i was totally pleased!!!...twice!!! scott was great right off the bat...he answered the phone!!! after not surfing for over 10 years, i figured better to get a private lesson. scott set me up with rhett. and wow, rhett was a complete blast. by then end of the session with rhett's guidance, i was feeling very thankful that i choose a private lesson. the coaching and tips got me back up on the board...especially with helping me get proper timing for catching waves (a major prior deficiency). THANKS BIG TIME, RHETT!!! 2nd experience...2 days later, my sister-in-law wanted here own private. scott totally got her hooked yup. and scott rented me a board for me to go on and work my surfing abilities. the waves that morning were much smaller and less occurring then my 1st day, but wow, did scott totally make the day!!! with others in the water getting their own lessons from other schools, scott did something really different and great. other instructors we out more, having their students waiting for the waves. but scott noticed there were still waves, but in more. and with the other students from the other schools waiting, waiting, and waiting...scott had my sister-in-law constantly on waves. thus she had at least a 3 times more wave count then anyone else...several, several times riding the wave all the way in!!! and since she was just learning, what a great experience. and scott was the only instructor cheering on their student amongst the others in the water. but the highlight for me was later in the morning. one of my longest rides started great, then got even better as i looked to my right, and there riding the same wave was my sister-in-law!!! how cool of an experience!!! My fiance and I had a great time surfing with our instructor Scott. We ended up being the only 2 in the lesson, making our lesson fast paced and highly personalized. Scott made learning easy. Very friendly, low key surf school. Our teacher for the session, Casey is a relaxed instructor who spots and manages students through the crowded waves well. The teaching area is a bit saturated but that is not really the school's fault. It's just a reliable place for consistent waves near Lahaina so lots of people go there. Equipment is slightly worn, but the boards did their job perfectly well. My son and had a good beginner level experience as did the others in our group. A teacher who can set you up and give you a good push into the coming wave is key for a beginner like me who is not a strong swimmer, but still wants to get started. Follow Up: We went for a 2nd session a couple of days later at 8am to avoid the crowds, and got to know the owner and staff a bit better. Great people who are responsive and down to earth, upping the review to a full 5 stars for that reason (the best kind of reason). Each instructor, including the owner, Scott, has a slightly different style, but there are helpful things to take from each one. As of the date of this review the ownership and teaching team are a fresh crew in terms of attitude and going the extra mile, yet very experienced. Upon further reflection, I'd say don't be afraid of the potential crowd of teachers and students in this location, as navigating that kind of situation and etiquette is an important part of learning to surf, but getting up a bit earlier for the first session is worth it. read more

This was my favorite thing we did in Hawaii! I was so nervous to try surfing. From the start the owner (Scott) and all the instructors were awesome. They told me, "You will surf today." I was skeptical, but guess what? I surfed! And I surfed well! Seriously so much fun! The laid back, "Hawaiian" attitudes of everyone involved with Outrageous Surf was what made this experience what it was. There was no stress, just fun! Which is exactly what you want when you are on vacation. Bonus! They actually have a professional photographer that takes pictures of you the whole time and sells you the disc at the end! This whole experience was affordable and exceeded my expectations. Excellent job Scott and crew! I highly recommend Outrageous Surf! Since my previous review of these folks was not acceptable to the Yelp software I thought I would expand on the experience and maybe help Yelp out a bit. Maybe Yelp thinks this place is too cool to get a bad review or something. My teenage daughter was the only one learning to surf this day. Our experience with Outrageous Surf started out OK. We showed up a little early which may have been our downfall since everyone on Maui is on "island time", but we didn't complain when the instructors finally showed up well past the reservation time. We were on vacation and went with the flow. They started out by getting everyone an appropriate surf shirt and then, had a few people at a time get up on surfboards in the office to walk them through the steps on how to stand up on a board. After that, everyone walked over to Kamehameha Iki Park to get a board and get in the water. This all commenced at a very slow "island" pace. Once everyone was out in the water where the little waves were forming, the instructors called students over from a waiting area a few at a time and had them catch a wave. Apparently someone paid for a private class for his little girl and she had an instructor all to herself and rode constantly. Oh well if you have that kind of money you can get special treatment. The poor thing Outrageous did was to schedule a private lesson during a group lesson which hugely increased the number of students per instructor for the group class which also increased the wait time but the entire group had to deal with this so que sara. What the group didn't need was for the remaining instructors to stop instructing their students every time a slightly larger wave came in. Many of the students were obviously good enough to ride these waves but no, the instructors would jump on these waves themselves and further cut into the classes time to actually surf. Instead the class sat around on their boards looking bored. That's what burns me about this place. I would have been happier if they would have just done what they were being paid for and let the kids ride the waves instead of wasting everyone's time so they could catch a wave too. Heck, they live there for crying out loud. They can catch much better waves after work than what was coming in next to the harbor there off Lahaina. At least my daughter was a good sport about it and was happy with the couple of pictures we were able to take showing her up on a board but I could tell she sure wanted to have the chance to ride just a few more waves. Well I doubt Yelp will reconsider adding my review to this place's rating but hopefully some people will click to see the hidden reviews and at least put some consideration into trying a different outfit. read more

Do not go here! This is the worst excursion place I have ever been too. They instructors made you feel unsafe and we got less than half of the guaranteed surf time. On top of that, they cursed and called names in a mean manner to a 14 year old. Very bad place and very mean people. read more

My boyfriend and I had such an awesome experience here. Ladies, they give you a surfing shirt to put over your bathing suit, which is much more comfortable than surfing in a bikini. So just make sure you have a comfortable bathing suit on for underneath. The instructor Scott was laid back and fun yet very knowledgeable about surfing at the same time. Really helped us learn the technique to it. When I got a little sea sick from paddling against the waves, he let me take a little break and then I got right back to it and had so much fun. I can actually say that even though we wiped out a few times, we caught plenty of waves to make up for it (I never thought I would actually catch a wave before we started) We bought the cd with all of our pictures which was inexpensive, I think around $20. Scott gave a nickname to my boyfriend- Lu dog.. LOL it was hysterical. And when we saw them around town they recognized who we were. So the instructors there are friendly and personable. I would definitely recommend coming here for surf lessons. Great prices and great staff, you will have fun and learn..can't beat that ! read more

Visited the folks here today and cannot say enough good things about them! My 16 yo daughter and 12 yo son had a group lesson with Jr and Dylan. Their group included 6 other people ranging in age from about 6 to early 30's. After the lesson every one of them was pumped about surfing and ready to try it again. The instructors were enthusiastic and encouraging the entire time. Safety was always on their mind and just as important, my kids actually surfed. By themselves. They rode waves in to shore and truly learned how to surf. After the lesson the owner offered to burn a cd (for an extra charge) of the photos he took while my kids were out surfing. The photos were great and much better than any I could have taken from shore with my camera or phone. Overall - an excellent time. My kids both said it was the highlight of their trip to Maui. read more

We paddle boarded and surfed twice with outrageous surf during our Maui trip and both times were awesome!!! Scott was super enthusiastic in setting up the lessons and making sure it all ran smoothly. Stay away. Under new management - was told by other shop owners on the island. I witnessed the instructors getting in my son's face who was surfing when one of the "instructors" pushed a new student in front of him. My son was on a big floater and immediately jumped off and said he was sorry and one of instructors started bad mouthing him and two other instructors came over and all three were being bully's said lets take it to beach (my son is a 6'3" athlete and if they think they can bully him then a normal sized kid is really at risk). I was taking pictures of my daughter who was just learning to surf from the jetty and saw the whole thing. He called the shop after we left and spoke to the owner of a different place where we had rented from. The "manager" of Outrageous Surf went off on the phone and dropped the F-bomb and cursed him out. Lots of great alternatives to this POS surf school. Stay away!! read more

Not safe: Be prepared to help yourself in case of injury We (I and my wife) booked a semi private lesson from Outrageous for the morning. The surface in that beach is full of stones and corals, so it's easy to encounter one with our leg or catch it with a rope which connects your leg with the surfing board. We started the lesson in the beach and where instructor explained basic surfing skills. But gave mostly no instruction about safety behavior e.g. what you do if you fall of the board, what you do to not collide with other person and what you do during collision, what you do when rope of your surf stuck in the corals and surfing board hits you in face with strong waves. All of that bad things happened to us, and there was not medical help or even necessary attention. At the beginning we headed out to the ocean. First thing I got was a slight hit in head with the board, and then after that I had a collision with other person, where the surf board hit my leg strongly and head again. Our instructor asked me how I feel and I replied that not well. She replied to me that it happens, so we should not worry and just need to continue. Then I asked her if we can have a safe distance from other surfers and she took us father from the beach. After one more surfing retry, my wife departed to the beach. After I asked instructor what happened and she replied to me that my wife just want to relax on the beach. I continued for another hour the lesson, and at the middle of it, my wife entered the ocean where there is a smaller waves and there were also instructors training other people, and I talked that may be she wants to join again. After some rest my wife wanted to continue, and entered the area of smaller waves, but during that time instructor was not willing to try to reach my wife and understand why she does not return to the area of stronger waves. At that time my thought was that it's just safer if she stays there. Turned out that that the rope of the board of my wife entangled in the coral and then the board hit her several times with the force of coming waves, before she was able to get out of it. After the lessons we were very disappointed with the lesson, and had several injures. We went to the office of the Outrageous and I asked for something to heal my leg, at least for an ice. The instructor tried to search for something in the small first aid box, but was not able to find anything for me, and recommended to go to the nearest restaurant to ask for the ice. We asked why does instructor not willing to move to smaller waves area to check why my wife does not return, for that instructor replied that my wife needed to communicate that promptly, for which she was supposed to go to the area of bigger waves herself and communicate that. This does not sound reasonable. We asked for the refund of the half of the lessons for my wife, which is about 44 of 88 $ of the full price per person, for that instructor asked me to call the owner Lei, and talked with her, I explained my position, and also gave the phone to the instructor for confirmation, after they had a private talk, and instructor returned my phone with a words that owner of the Outrageous will contact Expedia via which lessons was booked, and I will be ok with refund, and owner will call me later with details. We went out and relax in the town for about 40 mins, and nobody called back, so we decided to call ourselves: this time the owner was that polite and said that we will not get our refund because my wife just relaxed on the beach. We decided to go to the office of Outrageous and talked to them once again, to our surprise instructor said to us that we are not suppose to get anything. There were other people in the office, and owners of Outrageous were afraid of losing other customers in our presence and refunded only 40 $ back. I do not recommend this company to anyone unless they seriously improve safety of these lessons. read more

Awesome group of surfers sharing their knowledge! We had a great time in our lesson with Benson who made everything so simple and easy to follow! Him and the owner were very helpful getting us set up before going out on the water and Benson kept everything simple for us amateurs to understand! I could hear other surf school instructors talking to classes out on the water and they were all too complicated and yelling out too many rules. Outrageous surf is so helpful and so easy to follow, every single one of us (5 people ages 16-57) were able to stand up by the second try. Don't look any farther book your surf lesson with them, I can't wait to try again read more

The instructors and lesson my two kids received were top notch, four maybe five stars. Unfortunately, the problem was when we arrived the manager told us he would take some great pictures of the kids we could buy. So I put away my camera so I could watch the lesson. Afterwards he starts showing the CD. Problem number one he got my 19 year old son mixed up with a 15 year old and one was wearing black short sleeves and one long sleeved grey?! So no pictures of my son. Next he shows me two pictures of my daughter which are out of focus but the next ones are money shots he says. Of someone else's daughter! So no pictures of my kids. You had one job to do! Ugh. He says sorry and won't charge me (!). We are going to rent a surf board now so we can get some pictures of them surfing. Feel like they should of offered that at minimum. Again, nice guys but don't buy the pictures. Too risky. read more
