I had a surf guide with Surf Club Maui for my birthday and it was such a great experience! My husband set everything up and everyone was so nice and accommodating. I'm a little more experienced than a beginner so I wasn't looking for a full lesson. I wanted someone to paddle out with me and give me some guidance in the lineup. Sean quickly understood the assignment and made the session perfect. He also helped push my husband into some great waves while still giving me the support I wanted. We also did the photo package. Our photographer (also named Sean) got so many great shots. To top it off the woman owner gave me a hat for my birthday which I loved wearing for the rest of the trip. My husband and I spontaneously booked this during our time in Maui as part of our honeymoon and it did not disappoint. Instruction was great, vibes were immaculate, and we had a really great time and caught a lot of waves for our first time ever on a surfboard. Our instructor Bryan was not only a good hang, but thorough and attentive in teaching us and did a great job making sure us newbies stayed safe. So glad we booked this! I see some negative comments about the photos on here and I just want to say I had a great experience with that. We did buy the album because the photos were pretty sick and it's our honeymoon. But if I didn't want to buy them it wouldn't have been a big deal as they didn't pressure us at all. In fact we approached the guy with the photos out of our own interest. "These waves have traveled thousands of miles just for you." Jonathan, Senior Surf Instructor, Surf Club Maui. This was a big highlight for the family on this trip. No, neither parent tried it lol. But just to be able and watch our girls, coming in without any experience, progress to full on standing and catching waves was just amazing! After looking at Yelp we decided on SCM. Prices were competitive and overall great reviews. We booked online. We chose the "group" lesson but they ended up being the only students for that time slot and instructor so it ended up essentially a private lesson which was cool. We opted to upgrade to a senior instructor as this was their first time. Jonathan was everything you want in a teacher. Friendly. Concise directions. Encouraging. You will find the SCM van parked in Kalama Park. Check-in involves sizing for shoes, rash guards, and of course the boards. Jonathan sized them with an 11' foam board each. As beginners they start off the class on land breaking down the mechanics of how to get on the board. The lesson then moves to the beach. There is a small stretch of sand to watch from. There is a photographer who goes into the water with them. You get a good amount of shots (this is optional and you get to preview them). Unless you bring along your own zoom lens the picture package is worth purchasing. The entire experience was great and I totally recommend Surf Club Maui and Jonathan with five stars and a double shaka! read more

This place and the people that run it and teach are top notch. I had watched them give a lesson from the beach the day before, and it convinced me to sign up for a group lesson. I let them know I was older (50's) and had not surfed in 30 years. Plus I have some extra weight on right now. They accepted the challenge. We met at the beach location, got booties, surf shirts, and the land instruction began at Kalama Park. Then we went down to the water and the fun really began. Each instructor took a few students and the students would queue up to get pushed into a wave by your instructor to get going. They told you when to pop up. The waves are just the right size for these beginning lessons. I loved it and had a great time. Pablo, Eps, and Suzie are the BEST. Consummate professionals. I was hesitant to book a lesson because I had recently tweaked my back, but Turtle, our instructor, was able to guide me through standing up incrementally. My 13 and 10 year old had the best time surfing with surf club Maui. I had paid for a group lesson but when we got there we had Elijah teach the girls exclusively! They absolutely loved him! He spent like 10mins on land with them and then he carried their boards and took them into the water. He didn't have a board so he spent the whole time right there helping and supporting them! Both girls stood up on their first tries! They were in the water for over 2 hours. There was also a photographer out there who took amazing pictures of them! It was also an additional safety feature which I loved having more instructors out there and I could hear them cheering and all the high fives for girls after every wave! Book with Surf Club Maui! You won't regret it!! Day one: We had reservations for the three teens (15,17 and 18) on a Tuesday. Only the 17 and 18 year old could surf (sickness for the third). The girls had a blast!!! Great day! Great instructors! Great waves to learn on! Day two: The 15 yo was bummed to have missed it. Went back on that Saturday. We booked again (never having received a refund nor did we ask for one for Tuesday) for the 15 yo and the 17 yo (she loved it). Surf Club Maui did not charge us for one of the lessons. That was kind of them!! Another day of great instruction! Waves were not as good, but no one can control that. Lol. Book directly with them opposed to via Airbnb. But honestly, either way works. Scheduled a morning class for a family of 4 - M-48, F-48, M-18, M-16. Walter was an amazing teacher who truly loved teaching. He was able to get ALL of us up on boards and riding the waves. Our teenage sons caught on quickly with Walter's guidance and they rank their surfing experience as #1 on their list of best experiences in Maui. They know where and when to be to make sure the experience is perfect. Another great thing about Surf Club Maui is on-site professional photographers. Kai (who has a magical ability to make even the most inexperienced moms look cool) was in the water snapping away, cheering us on, and capturing incredible memories that we couldn't do ourselves. For a reasonable fee, we were able to purchase over 100 photographs of our 2-hour experience. Way more fun than what I was expecting. My whole group thought we were going to be awful and the instructor took it slow and made sure everyone was safe and good to move forward. All of us (ages 24 to 55) were able to stand up on the board within their first or second run. Very friendly and they take pics for you. My husband and I had a semi private lesson and our kids each had a private lesson. Matthew, Pedro, and Epes was our instructors and they're so amazing! Surf Club was able to fit us in last minute and were able to honor the Groupon deal we found. This is our 2nd time surfing ever so our experience was minimal and I was nervous I wasn't going to do well and spend the entire time falling. We took lessons with Turtle who was a super cool guy! He was very patient with us and made us feel comfortable if we weren't getting it right the first time. He took time to observe us and correct us what we did wrong. Super easy to ask him question.
