Such a fun first surfing and family bonding experience! Our coaches David and Jonny made the experience positive and memorable. The group was small and the personalized instruction gave it an almost private lesson feel. I'd definitely recommend Surf Club Maui to anyone that is interested in giving surfing a try!

My daughter and I had a great experience. We did a three-day camp and improved each day. They were all very organized and kind

"These waves have traveled thousands of miles just for you." Jonathan, Senior Surf Instructor, Surf Club Maui. This was a big highlight for the family on this trip. No, neither parent tried it lol. But just to be able and watch our girls, coming in without any experience, progress to full on standing and catching waves was just amazing! After looking at Yelp we decided on SCM. Prices were competitive and overall great reviews. We booked online. We chose the "group" lesson but they ended up being the only students for that time slot and instructor so it ended up essentially a private lesson which was cool. We opted to upgrade to a senior instructor as this was their first time. Jonathan was everything you want in a teacher. Friendly. Concise directions. Encouraging. You will find the SCM van parked in Kalama Park. Check-in involves sizing for shoes, rash guards, and of course the boards. Jonathan sized them with an 11' foam board each. As beginners they start off the class on land breaking down the mechanics of how to get on the board. The lesson then moves to the beach. There is a small stretch of sand to watch from. There is a photographer who goes into the water with them. You get a good amount of shots (this is optional and you get to preview them). Unless you bring along your own zoom lens the picture package is worth purchasing. The entire experience was great and I totally recommend Surf Club Maui and Jonathan with five stars and a double shaka!

We are a large group of 12 with most of us being first time or beginner surfers. All 3 of our instructors, Epes (Sergeant), David and Mathew, were absolutely incredible instructors. You cannot go wrong with any of them. They made our experience amazing! They were super friendly, informative and an absolute pleasure as they got every single person in our party surfing!! A truly memorable experience we will never forget...and yes, we will all be back to surf again! Mahalo Epes, David and Mathew! Also, a shout out to our incredible photographer Kai! Again, an absolute pleasure to work. He was very engaging and got some great shots of our group! Mahalo Kai!

I was very impressed with this crew they were on time they were courteous and very helpful. All of my kids got up and we got some great pictures from the experience. It was a great morning I also appreciated how their introduction to surfing also included an introduction to polynesian culture and a nice little ritual that they did before they started riding waves. We will definitely be back and we will definitely use Maui Surf Club in the future!

Sarge is an amazing surfing instructor! Despite my fear of open water and the fact that I never learned to swim, Sarge patiently guided me through every step. Even after having two panic attacks on the water that day, Sarge's encouragement and expertise helped me get out on that board and surf. I couldn't have done it without him. Highly recommend Sarge for anyone looking to conquer their fears and learn to surf! ‍. Much love from a new yorker, mahalo

They had me (a total beginner) surfing and having a blast within ten minutes! Great instructors and pictures! Thank you so much Sarge and Kainoah!

If these guys can teach an old guy like me to ride a wave they can teach anybody. I was hesitant to book a lesson because I had recently tweaked my back, but Turtle, our instructor, was able to guide me through standing up incrementally. I don't know if I'll ever be able to pop up, but I feel like now I can enjoy surfing on my own. I was able to catch a few waves without Turtle's helpful push. Turtle is a great instructor! You're also going to want to buy pictures from the photographer, they are awesome.

They had a great time…read moreand Mikey was great from the dry land lessons to getting them out on the water and giving them tips and techniques to ensure they got up on their boards and got surfing! They were pretty tired when they got back but that just means they got to ride a lot of waves in! My daughter said surfing was one of her favorite activities of the trip. The company was easy to find in the parking lot and they offered the option to tip digitally which we appreciated. We also purchased the optional photo package so got some great photos of our group on the water.

We found the spot easily and the van. Once we checked in, we filled out the waiver, fitted with a sun shirt and water shoes. We were also given a mesh bag to put our belongings in and this was put in their van. We were in a group of 6 people total and our guide was Mikey. Mikey went over the basics and had us practice on dry land and then we were off. It was only waist deep and most of the ocean floor was sand, with a few rocks, so the water shoes came in handy. Mikey found a wonderful area for us to ride waves on Kalama Beach and was very encouraging and positive. He'd tell you exactly what to do and when to do it to successfully surf. I am the least athletic person and I stood up on my first wave. Best of all, we saw a lot of turtles! I could have stayed all day and just enjoyed the turtles. Surfing is exhausting and I had a hysterectomy 6 months ago. When I wanted to just cheer people on, there was no pressure to get back out there. It was at my own pace. I really appreciated that. There is also a photographer to purchase pictures and we bought those as well for $120.00. $90.00 for 1 person and $120.00 for two. It will be 48 hours or so until those come in digitally. Gratuity isn't included, so we brought cash. If you need to, there is also a digital way to tip your instructor. If you use this company, ask for Mikey. He's a great teacher and very enthusiastic with his small group. Con: on the Viator website it lists "light refreshments", which wasn't offered. If I had to do it again, I'd skip Viator and book directly with the company. If you book directly with the company it's $88.00 per person.

She did a thorough introduction before we went out on the water, helped us get on/off our kayaks with ease, and made sure we were all safe while respecting the Hawaiian waters and their majestic creatures. We saw so many whales breach in every direction, heard their songs clearly above water and under water with the paddle trick. Kris also took a few photos of us while we were out there! It can be a little difficult to hear out there on the water, so be sure to speak up and ask your tour guide to repeat if needed. Would have loved to hear more about facts about the whales and Maui in general, and it'd be cool if the tour guides used Hawaiian words like "Huli" which means "flip over". Luckily we didn't huli! Tip: Be sure to hydrate, eat a snack, wear reef safe sunscreen, long sleeves if it looks cold, stretch your hammies, and use the restroom beforehand as they don't offer these during the tour. I wish I brought my hydroflask, but I survived! Also, help out your locals and leave a tip if they meet your expectations! No need to bring cash unless you have a place for it, they'll email you with the photos and their Venmo to optionally tip.
