The Moth is a storytellers event that occurs at different places, and the one I went to was at Housing Works Bookstore and Cafe, which was the perfect venue. It started at 7:30 and ended at 9:30, there's no drink minimum, you can bring your own food, and tickets are cheap, but hard to get. It's essentially a show where people who'd previously entered their names get picked to tell stories in under five minutes. Anyone can do it, and anything can be said. There were funny ones, sad ones, dramatic ones, silly ones, overall twelve performances along with a host who introduces each one. They also sell drinks and snacks there, which goes to a great cause. Whether you're looking for something New Yorky, cheap, chill, cute, or thought-provoking, The Moth will satisfy.

Going to a Story Slam hosted by The Moth is actually one of my favorite things to do in the city…read more The story slams happen 4-6 times a month at various locations around Manhattan and Brooklyn (see the website for schedule). Each slam has a different theme. If you feel that you have a worthy 5-min story, you can put your name in the bag, where they draw out names. Ten storytellers go up and these stories are judged by three teams of judges from the audience. The winner of the slam goes on to the Quarterly GrandSLAM Championship. It lasts about 2.5 hrs and costs $8. I've gone to a couple of these at the Housing Works and I'm always really impressed by the quality and talent of most of the storytellers. Many of them take this quite seriously and you can tell that they spent time crafting their story and delivery. The best stories aren't the ones that are merely funny, but they're poignant, send you on an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows, and leave you with a message and something to think about. There's a certain raw honesty and catharsis that comes through and the audience is always supportive, especially so for the new storytellers who stand up there alone and vulnerable. Indeed, if the audience feels the judges are too harsh, the audience lets the judges know. At the Story Slam at Housing Works, the doors open at 7 pm (stories start at 7:30). There are limited seats, so if you're dead set on sitting, stand in line by 5:30. There are plenty places to stand and get a good view as Housing Works' second floor is a mezzanine. Recently I got to the line by 6:30 and easily found a comfortable spot to stand and watch (wear comfortable shoes!). The ticket sales of the Story Slam goes directly to The Moth. Housing Works, which is a wonderful organization that helps people with HIV/AIDS, sells alcohol and snacks, so you're giving to a great cause by drinking.

I was shocked that they were advertised under the "Cirque du Soleil" title, and housed at the Beacon theater. I love this theater so much. Growing up directly across the street from it, the theater brings back nostalgic memories in my mind. If it weren't for the 3 professional acts (contortionists, acrobatic balancing couple, and Russian male gymnast) the show would have been a complete disaster. I grew up in a theatrical family, and have seen regional theater with more talent. I accepted it for what it was, and enjoyed the campiness as much as I could, but there was a moment in the middle where I had to surrender to the madness.

The mistress? the psychiatrist? Overall, this off-Broadway old-fashioned, stage crime musical comedy was a killer! The show's running time is 90 min with no intermission. Been here twice…read more.. Was at the opening event and it was well worth the price. Great vibe. Awesome crowd filled with local artistic types - some out of town. Evening started with music performance - blues with dance - pretty cool. Then came a theater performance - about the Ukraine conflict - educational and visual. Next up was a one woman act - super energetic and imaginative. Closed up with singing by Kelly S Patrick - nice touch. Throughout it all was an open art gallery by local artists - inspiring. Place has some art studios that were open for viewing. Bar had enormous selection of great beer $4-5 by the bottle - ice cold. Cheese and crackers - tasty and free! Place was super clean. Got to meet lots of people and made some friends. Lot's of excitement and chatting. Learned that night that the people running the spot are opening a larger venue next door.. can't wait for that! Went to the Cinderella puppet show to see real marionette style puppets. Amazing to see that art revived! My kids were mesmerized and still. The whole set up from opening night was transformed for a family style show this day. Complete with tables and chairs.. There were coffee and snacks - by Madame Claude Cafe! Very comfortable setting. Parents got to chill with a cup of Joe while kids had a fun time.. to tell the truth, I enjoyed the puppets on strings too. Tickets are incredibly inexpensive... One thing lacking though is a good sign outside to find the place easier.. get on it!

Really, really, awesome show, and I'm considering going back before they leave on May 2. Gregory Charles and his band are amazing!! I have no idea how they can possibly know soooo many songs - music and lyrics! I can't even remember what I wore yesterday. Not only do they know the words and the music, but they are really good!!! Any song, any genre, any decade! It's an interactive show so you can request songs throughout the show, and if you're lucky yours will get picked. You also put in a vote before the show starts and they pick the paper requests during the third set. I was sad to see that it wasn't a sold out show, and it really should have been! I feel like they didn't advertise enough, and people just don't know what they're missing. Do yourself a favor and check it out! The only thing you might regret is going all the way to 12th Ave, but it's totally worth the schlep!!

These requests are made right before/during the show. Its sort of like an improv/variety/karaoke show. We were told to fill out the back of our ticket, before the show, and/or complete a questionnaire online, during the show, that asks questions about our favorite song, favorite musical icon, favorite musical time period, and favorite beatles band. During the show Gregory would pick songs from the answers and sing them. Kinda cool. I particularly enjoyed the female vocalist Kim Richardson with some of the female solo songs and the musical medleys that Gregory mixed together, almost like a hodge podge of lyrics from several songs sang together in one song. The band's talent was awesome. As Gregory conducted the band, to accommodate for audience song requests on the spot, the band was able to follow these cues rather quickly and played really nice renditions of the requested songs. Wayra incorporates new ideas, while the majority of the show includes similar elements to the original. There are some cool effects, even some parts of the show is visually arresting. I won't spoil anything if you're interested in going, as some of it does have to be experienced. Some of the things they pull, it's fair to say, wouldn't be seen anywhere else. Overall, there was too much of what I consider to be "filler" - completely unnecessary segments of the show with people dancing on the stage, shouting across the room at each other, and other bizarre acts. I got tired of people running around and throwing things around without any storyline, and was downright BORED when they spent a few minutes pounding on drums, shouting inanities, and dancing in a half-crazed jerky fashion. Storyline. At some point, a man is running on a treadmill, attempting to make progress while picnic tables, chairs, and people got in his way. Fairly early in the show, this act prompted hope in me that there would be some kind of story, or relatable interpretation for the chaos. It seems as though the creators (maybe there were too many?) had a bunch of ideas they thought would be cool to include in the show, so they cobbled them all together without any cohesive story or point, and hoped that it would work. It didn't for me, but if you're just looking for a dance floor with additional visual stimuli, this could do the trick for you. Note that as you spend the majority of the show looking up, your neck will hurt. Have a massager handy afterwards in the form of an object or friend. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be on your feet the whole time. Lastly, if you enjoy taking opportunities to get drenched while fully clothed, you may be in luck with this show.

Be prepared for loud music/bangs, strobe lights, high winds,flying confetti and tired feet. You are standing for 90 minutes so wear comfortable shoes. One critique I do have is how close you get to people, if you are claustrophobic I do not recommend this show.You'll be bumping against some strangers. Another thing is the water at the end, you have a choice to get wet. Of course I ran into the spout like I never seen H20 in my life. But be mindful that you do not have time to dry off and if it's winter you'll have a new job as Jack Frost lol On a budget ? Look around on different theatre websites or just google it. There is allllways a discount for this show. Luckily I knew a crew member that gave me a good deal. Do the research, don't pay full. If you are lucky you can be chosen to be hooked up to a harness and fly with the actor/actresses for one of the segments. Look for the crew members ! Everyone who works at the venue is extremely nice too. Overall Wayra is a great show and I'll definitely get my friends birthday tickets so I can go back and experience it again. :)
