A nice fire road to hike in La Canada…read more My friend and Yelper Jo Anne S. texted me that she wanted to hike, so I met her at the beginning of the trail. The Earl Canyon Motorway is a fire road that begins just west of the new Jessen Bridge right by the intersection of Solliden Lane. To get to Solliden Lane you would drive north on Palm Drive from Foothill Boulevard. First, we headed straight up the road that starts as a residential street. If you go straight you'll see a big sign for Hall Beckley Canyon. Eventually there will be an intersection and you will turn left. Don't go straight down Beckley Canyon because it dead ends in about a half mile into a spillway and abandoned home. There is a tree rope we used to climb to the top of the spillway, but once you get to the top there's no trail. I think the Santa Monica Conservancy or City of La Canada needs to start some work to re-build the trail once something is done with that abandoned house. It kind of gives me the heebie-jeebies and I was glad I wasn't hiking alone. Who knows if riff raff hangs out in this old house that is mostly boarded up. We turned back and got back on the actual fire road and it goes up a few miles. Next time I hike it I will try to get to the top and I'll edit this review. We started late and it started getting kind of warm so we turned around. Also, the Yelp map is off, but I'll get that fixed. I sent an e-mail to Yelp HQ with the coordinates. The view is amazing up there. We could see the Santa Monica Bay clearly with the naked eye. The photos didn't look as clear with iPhone. We could see to Catalina Island which was nice. This is definitely a nice trail on the side of Mt. Lukens. It may be an easy route to the summit and I'll try that in the near future.

I can't believe I have lived here for a large portion of my life and don't ever remember going on this hiking trail. According to my parents, they took me here once when I was younger but I don't have any recollection of this. As you walk up (or down) Jessen, you'll see a little road that leads past a few more homes and then slowly heads up the hills. While the path isn't paved, you definitely won't "lose" the path or find yourself in a bind with things blocking your way. The first trail definitely has a wide enough area where you won't have that sensation of falling off the side of the mountain. It is slippery because of all the loose rocks so make sure to wear good shoes. This is especially important for your trip back down because some of these places are steep enough to cause you to slide. You came here not just for the exercise but the scenery. On a bright sunny clear day you can see the skyline of Los Angeles as well as the ocean and making it up to the top really gives you a sense of accomplishment. If you really wanted more, you could continue hiking another 3 miles to head to the next view point. I have seen many people running as well as riding their bikes up the mountain (how they do that I don't know because I was already dying just walking). You can also walk your dogs up here (but please be responsible and pick up after them!). Definitely recommend this if you're in the area and looking to get some good pictures of the city :D

We put "Eaton Canyon Trail Head" on Google Maps and it brought us directly to their parking lot and there's more than enough spots for everyone but of course it's always best to come as early as possible which is 8am. The hike was easy overall. I highly recommend wearing proper hiking shoes/boots because there are plenty of rocks that you have to walk through midway through the hike. As you get closer to the waterfall you have to start crossing the creek that has even more rocks and water so please be careful and wear the proper shoes to keep yourself safe! I saw a few people fall down trying to cross the creek because of the wrong shoes. It took us about 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete the hike from beginning to end. I believe you can finish the hike in 1 hour and 20 minutes if you are a fast walker and don't stay at the waterfall for very long. Definitely one of our favorite hiking trails in SoCal!

Go early, otherwise you will encounter a lot of people on the trail. This trail seems to attract large groups or families. And please note this trail isn't for first timers due to the many crossings that require good balance and concentration. The dirt trail and scenery reminded me of some of trails on the East Coast in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Parking is free but if you get there after 9:00am, be prepared to walk a ways from the overflow lot to the beginning of the trail.

Cerro Negro (formerly San Rafael) fire lookout tower was built in 1934. It was operational for 26 years until the county turned it over to the Glendale City Fire Department in 1960. Since then it has been used as a communications site. It's unfortunately not accessible to the public and can only be viewed from behind a chain link fence. Located near the tower is an old, nonfunctional, Chrysler Victory Air Raid Siren. I've read that it produced the loudest sound ever achieved by a siren, delivering 138 decibels, and that it could be heard 25 miles away. It was tested on the last Friday of every month at 10am up until 1985. It's an interesting piece of Cold War era history that, depressingly, is starting to have increasing relevance today. You can access the site a number of different ways. For quick access you can just drive to the end of Sugar Loaf Dr and walk a short distance. My recommended method would be to take the 4-mile roundtrip hike from Descanso Gardens. There's an easy-to-miss entrance off of Descanso Dr before you turn right into the park that takes you to Descanso Motorway. From there it's a moderately strenuous climb where you'll travel counterclockwise, encircling the park, along the ridgeline. After you make the semicircle you should be able to see the lookout in the distance. The path should be fairly obvious from there.

The house Itself wasn't here originally but was moved from 921 East Wilson in 1980 and restored by The Glendale Historical Society. Built around 1888, the Doctors House is one of Glendale's two remaining Queen Anne-Eastlake style Victorian homes. I haven't been inside the house where it now houses a museum as it's only open Sundays from 2-4pm with the last tour at 3:30pm on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, even not being able to enter the house itself, I admired the beauty of its architecture just looking from outside as well as the pretty gazebo in front of the house.

This is a short, 2.6-mile roundtrip, trail located within Verdugo Mountains. The trail offers a…read moregreat work-out with its 700 feet elevation gain and some awesome views of the San Fernando Valley and beyond. At the top of the mountain you get to explore ruins of an old abandoned, and later burned down, Boy Scout camp built in the mid-20th century. The trail is a lollipop loop and the stick portion extends about half a mile up the hill. The loop starts shortly after you pass scenic spot that has a bench. You can take a sharp left (clockwise) to continue along the Old Youth Camp Trail and then Stough Canyon Trail back down to complete the loop. This gives you the best views on the way down. Alternatively, the counterclockwise direction offers a less steep incline up the mountain. The ruins are interesting to explore. There is a tall brick chimney and an outline of the former structure. It would be interesting to view an historic photo of the site. It's a good spot to rest before you make your way back down. I recommend stopping by the Nature Center before you leave. It's worth a visit. There are also bathrooms located at the Nature Center. Parking is free and the trail is dog friendly.

I was in a dream state and although I slept well the closer I got to Griffiths park the harder my…read moreheart hurt. I'm glad I found this trail pretty easy to follow but I wouldn't go alone. I get lost easily. I made it to the top in 40 minutes going pretty slow as I had a panic attack which subsided. It was a hot Sunday and was back in the car by 11 am. It's nice to end the hike with a good stretch under a shady tree. Next time I will end my hike with some fruta. I miss you so much Atom.

You're at the top when you see the stair pathway and then you turn back and there is Bee Rock. However, the section for bee rock is closed. You can see it to a certain point. I took the same way back because it was shorter than the easier trail which is longer. I was too tired from the way up I wanted to go the shortest way back.

I don't like that the top section is very very narrow and some parts are missing or broken off so it's about ten inches wide on some sections . It's very dry so it makes me a little uneasy. I prefer chantry or Monrovia canyon falls, or schabarum lark for a deeper more forest type hike . However it is a historic landmark and has lots of sage and orettt wild flowers so it's not a bad choice .

My first hike of the 2024 year!…read more Catalina Verdugo Trail is a 2.8-mile loop trail near Glendale Sports Complex in Glendale, California. This trail is considered an easy route, with an elevation gain of 550 ft which takes an average of 1 h 24 min to complete. If you want to lengthen your hike, the CVT interconnects with Ridge Motor Way. The C.V. trail begins at the back of the soccer field (walk adjacent by the wired fence). I suggest visitors park at the very end of the parking lot. The loop ends at the entrance of the sport's complex by the baseball field-parking lot. I hiked the CVT today around noon with no humans on sight. It's just me and nature. The trail has a short steep elevation at base and mostly flat at top; trailhead has narrow single file path, copious tree shades, budding flora-fauna, and three rest benches. It's nice to hear the sounds of wild life despite the noise of The (2) freeway. The highlight of my hike was seeing a hummingbird. Overall, it's a nice quick easy hike and a good cardio/leg workout. I recommend this trail.
