We specifically picked Owen Roe to visit while in Yakama, given we enjoyed the Newburg, OR tasting room (which I think is closed now). We sat outside, under a tree, with our pups. They bring the wine pre-poured in mini-carafe's (I'm sure there's a proper name for them), and include a "blind" pour that if you guess correctly, you win a prize (which I did not.) The outside area is spectacular, with trees for shade, the views for miles, and the feel of being somewhere special. Service was OK, they bring you pre-poured if you sit outside, and they may check back in on you if they aren't too busy. It seemed our server was on the new side, and she told us 4 times she had only been there a few days. Inside, I think it might be a more traditional experience, but can't confirm. There is also a good-sized seating area inside - and you're able to see the other vintage/varietals available for purchase. Wines by the glass are available, but not for everything, and only for bottles they have already opened. I wanted to try their Sangiovese, but they weren't pouring it, and bummer they didn't have one open to taste - I would have loved to try it. I recommend (based upon my palate) the Abbot's Table and the Sinister Hand (fun background story as well). I didn't care for the rose - it was sweeter than I prefer. Regardless, come visit and you're bound to find something to suit your taste. So why 4-stars? I just have high expectations of servers when I'm tasting wine, and I didn't get the feeling that ours knew the product well, so I didn't feel like I would get much education (which is part of why I, myself, enjoy wine tasting - to learn something new). read more

Wine tasting reservation for 3 ppl at Sat 1pm and there was only one other party there! They hand-wrote a Reserved sign just for us and also brought water to our table! She was very knowledgeable about the wines and the history of the winery. WINE: 5.0. The tastings were from the winery's higher-end wines, and were all excellent. Best we had during our Yakima visit. Both estate-grown grapes and some from trusted growers are used in the wines. AMBIANCE: 4.5. The interior tasting area is among the barrels, so the temperature is optimized for the wine and thus is a wee bit cool. Blankets are provided for the few customers who feel chilled. Wonderful winery in Yakima area. It has a very family friendly environment. There is a huge yard for picnic with large Jenna for everyone to enjoy. Staffs were extremely patient and nice. I had the flight and the hostess was not only great in explaining the wines for me but also spent time to answer my kids questions. I was so grateful for her kindness and patience. I enjoyed the melbac (I am normally a very dry and full body cab gal). It was a perfect match with our salami sandwich. I would highly recommend this if you are in the area. read more

Owen Roe was a great winery to visit while in the Yakima Valley area. Of all the tasting rooms we visited in the area that day, Owen Roe's setting was definitely my favorite, for you could lounge around outside on the patio with lawn games, or have a closer view of the production and process of the wines inside. It is required to make a reservation at Owen Roe before visiting and you must pay online for the tasting fee ahead of time. If you buy a bottle, the tasting fee is waived. On a Saturday, we made a reservation for an afternoon slot and the place was packed. For our reservation, we sat inside where we had a behind-the-scenes view of many staffers pressing on the grapes to make the wine, including an intern from Burgundy, France. Our server explained the process and about the different wines here. You can tell there is a lot of pride that goes into these wines. All four of us did a tasting, which included one white and four reds: sauv blanc, merlot, cab sauv and two syrahs. I don't like white wine, but must say that the sauvignon blanc here really surprised me. It was delightful, which I hardly ever say about white wine, as it was not sweet and more dry. I liked it. All of the reds were great here though, especially the cab sauv. That was definitely my favorite, as it had a real bite to it, which I love about cab sauvs. Owen Roe is a great winery to visit in the Yakima Valley area, as they have a ton of wines that will cater to anyone's preference. I enjoyed our experience here and seeing them in action, as well as how friendly our server was. I would visit again. read more

Beautiful tasting room/barn. Friendly hosts who treated us to a taste of everything they had open and waived our tasting fee when we purchased a bottle of the Pinot Grigio. My wife has, since moving to Yakima, made it her goal to visit every wineries in the area. As a supportive husband, I can only support such a mission! Owen Roe is a wonderful winery located just outside of Yakima on the other side of Union gap. It's a winery that has its beginnings elsewhere, but is always made it a point to treat those they do business with very fairly. Shortly after they began business, a few decades ago, there was a farm crisis. They ultimately made it a point to help farmers harvest the grapes, and shared profits with them because they felt like it was the right thing to do. Pretty awesome stuff! We don't know this because we've done deep searching into the goings on of the Valley wineries, but rather because of a lovely gal named Susan who welcomed us in the tasting room. Admittedly, I'm putting faith in what she said, but either way, it seems like they're doing a good job! Tastings, which in our case included six or seven different varieties of whites, reds and rosés, are $10 or included if you buy something. Winds here range between 20 and $60 per bottle with a 15% discount if you were part of the wine club. We ended up picking up a Pinot Grigio as well as a Cabernet Sauvignon. Obviously the deliciousness of the wines is going to change from year-to-year, but based on these, we're probably going to be back for more. The Pinot Grigio was crisp and refreshing, while The Cabernet was smooth, had some nice deep fruit tones and overall was just really good. The tasting room isn't huge, but it's housed in the same area as the barrels that are aging much of the wine. It really adds a nice effect! In addition, they have a giant area outside with picnic tables and a huge grass Field where our little dudes will definitely be running around in the future. Like so many of the wineries in the area, they've done a great job of making this the sort of place where you can drop in for 20 minutes or hang out for a few hours and bring food. In addition, the winery overlooks Mount Adams and on a clear day, the views are absolutely stunning. Susan, the woman we chatted with for quite some time, was absolutely a delight She really knew her wines, had a good in-depth knowledge of the area and was very excited about the things that they were doing. It definitely behooves anybody working at a winery to be able to chat with anyone, and she did it as good as anyone we've seen! All in all, we're excited to have discovered Owen Roe and now have plans to go back with the little dudes as there's plenty of room to run around before, during and after tasting a few of their offerings! read more

We ventured over to this Winery on a side trip from Desert Aire. We were attracted by the sweeping views of the Yakima Valley. We stayed for the delicious wines (try the Red Willow Cabernet Sauvignon!). When a 5-year-old in our party face-planted into a wine glass and ended up with a shard of glass in her eyelid, the staff was urgent and empathetic, even choosing a Hello Kitty bandaid to please our girl and giving the adults a complementary glass of wine (and fault was all ours). All is good. We drank, we ate, some cried, and we had a merry time. We will be back...without our girl. read more

The views from Owen Roe are amazing, the wines delicious, and the staff are super friendly. Owen Roe was our first vineyard stop during our trip and ended up being the best. You get sweeping views of the mountains to one side and the vineyards to the other. You could sit here all day just soaking in the views. The other vineyards we visited couldn't compare to these views. The tasting facilities were also top notch, clean, bright, tall ceilings. The wines were all delicious and reasonably priced. The staff was super nice and friendly explaining the different wines. They just started serving cheese and crackers which is a great touch. Fantastic place, their servers were extremely friendly and definitely love what they do. We enjoyed several of their wines and they give you the tasting free with a purchase of wine. Chardonnay was very good (it is always hit or miss for me with these) and they had a FANTASTIC cab, although it was a bit too pricey for us to pick up a bottle. They were not at all stingy with the pours and offered revisits. There were some pesky gnats flying around from time to time but otherwise there are no complaints. Owen Roe is located in Wapato and just off the highway....drive up the gravel path and make a couple of turns and you'll see the big maroon barn. :) We got there just after opening and were greeted by a warm staff and ambience. Susan was great at telling us a little bit more about the wine region and the various wines we tasted...she also took some great photos of us out front. As it was a hot day, I wasn't really feeling the reds but they were delicious! However, the Pinos Gris was crisp and light. They have some patio tables set up out front so you can sit and enjoy the view as well. First time in the Yakima Valley and we couldn't have chosen a better first winery to visit! read more
