My wife and I had an event in Yarmouth and this was where we decided to grab a bite and drink beforehand. Parking on the street nearby was easy enough and thankfully had no wait for a table. The space is small yet inviting with lots of decorative owls all around as well. The staff were all friendly and our server was very attentive and described the specials expertly. They offered beers, wines, signature cocktails, as well as a few mocktails. Also appeared to have a full bar so should you have a preferred drink I am sure they'll make it. I enjoyed their Ramona Park cocktail that had a touch of spice, while my wife got their Follow You Down mocktail. Drink prices appeared to be quite standard. Food wise my wife got their Not Your Average BLT and I got their Good Ol' Chicken Basket. The BLT was phenomenal with little tweaks/additions to it that make it a new favorite BLT! The chicken was very tasty, yet extremely thin so a few bites had no meat and just breading. Both came with fries and those were tasty and seasoned well! They could have been a touch more crispy though. Overall we both enjoyed our meals a lot and would love to return! Both food and drinks were brought to us in a quick time! 3rd time- a literal charm! Sat at the bar today; Brady started me with a margarita (salt) Espolon tequila. Moved onto butter board for our appetizer then to single patty Scullery (smash) burger with hand cut house fries for me and a double for the man of the house. Way too full for dessert!! Came in again because I LOVED the duck I had here months ago. Ordered: duck wings: small portion for the price but they were indeed fall of the bone tender, crispy, and smothered in a sweet and savory sauce beef poutine: the cheese curds had melted into puddles but the side ate like a hearty meal, good portion of beef, though fries were just okay double cheeseburger: piled high and juicy but again, just okay Overall I'll still be back supporting the restaurant that has served me some of the best bites of food, but I'll be focused more on their duck or special new items. The Owl and Elm has changed a lot since I was there last, and all for the better. The menu has more choices, all of which are slightly upscale pub food. For example the BLT was easily the best BLT I have ever had, with some special sauce and amazing bread. The fish was cooked absolutely perfectly, cooked through, but moist, flakey, and flavorful. The asparagus still had a bit of crunch and the dressing and parmesan was perfect. I was amazed at how quickly the food was prepared and delivered despite the fact that the venue was full. Wine pours were a reasonable size. Staff were very friendly and highly competent despite how busy it was. We will definitely be back. read more

This is a lovely neighborhood place with a good selection of seafood, pasta, salads, the requisite burger, and a few vegetarian options. There are some decent local beers, craft cocktails, and the usual standard bar offerings. The decor is what I now consider standard for southern Maine restaurants of a certain quality - brick, wood and Edison bulbs. The tables are a bit close together, which maximizes the seating in a small place, but depending on who you are seated next to, can make it challenging to have a romantic dinner ;) We had crab cakes for an app, and I had the Bangs Island mussels app for my entree. My husband had the Thai scallops with peanut sauce over pork and egg fried rice. The crab cakes were small but tasty. The scallops special was delicious- never would've imagined a peanut sauce on seared scallops, but man oh man was it good. The mussels were fresh and large, but I was not a fan of the tomato based sauce. What really made our experience however was the awesome server who was very personable and easy to joke around with, but also knew when to give us space. A very good restaurant that is a bit all over the place with prices and portion size. While I'm still not sure exactly what Owl & Elm is, I am excited for a return visit. It's a small space that fills quickly, and fortunately accepts reservations. The vibe is more bar than restaurant, which I prefer. The menu is almost too good, making it nearly impossible to try all of my favorite options. It's mostly comfort food (burgers, carnitas fries, chicken and waffles, fish and chips) mixed with more upscale choices (steak, salmon, mussels, etc). The pricing has a wide spread, from generous deals (a sizable burger and fries for $18) to near fine dining (steak and salmon are both $36). Portion size is luck of the draw. My duck leg special was $30, and while it might have worked on a luxe kid's menu in the Berkshires, it was embarrassingly small for an adult. And I'm not a big guy. A single duck leg resting on a barely-larger pile of parmesan potatoes, this was a $30 snack. Same with the mussels. There might have been nine in the order, which is possibly the least I've ever seen. Yet the buffalo cauliflower was large and likely my favorite in years. The burger and steak (served with impossibly fluffy and buttery mashed potatoes) were also perfectly sized, and received raves. The drink menu is exceptional. My tequila cocktail ($12) was light and refreshing. There are numerous wines at great value and a strong selection of local beers. Owl & Elm is an interesting spot, melding a bar atmosphere with a mix of comfort and upscale food. It would just be great to have more consistency, so ordering a satisfying meal isn't a dart throw. read more

I rarely write food reviews because everyone has such varied likes and dislikes but I felt compelled to write after my recent dinner. The food was delicious...just not enough of it! The fish and chips was perfectly cooked - both the haddock and fries were light, crispy and very tasty! But...a scant handful of fries with 2 thin straps of fish is just not enough, especially for $21! The same goes for the Chicken and Waffles, yummy but it needed a veggie or something else with it. The chicken was cooked to a dark color and placed on 2 sm waffles with nothing else on the plate for $22. Again, a small portion and very blah looking. In previous visits, the portions were much more in line with the price and you left fulfilled, not hungry. I have heard this from other people so I know it wasn't an off night, not sure I'll return with all the other wonderful options out there. read more

There was a bit of an issue initially because we didn't have a reservation and it was Friday. We completely understood. We were ready to leave, but they were quick to change their minds and the found us a table. Our server was great on the front half of our dining experience, but super difficult to track down when it came time to get the check, pay, and get out of there. Strange. The place was filling up and getting busy. I would have thought they needed the table. The buffalo cauliflower was amazing!! I highly recommend that to everyone! My fish & chips were good. Loved the fish and there was plenty of it. Good batter and well fried. The fries were just ok. Nothing at all special. My spouse enjoyed her burger and felt the same about her basket of fries. Just so-so. Very pricey for a burger ($19) and fish & chips ($23). We were grateful for their willingness to find us a table on a Friday with no reservation. That alone gave them a star! Quaint pub style spot with an eclectic menu. We tried the smoked salmon deviled eggs. They were very flavorful. I had the French onion soup, which was piping hot and had plenty of cheese and loads of onions. The mussels were also plentiful, served with a garlic coconut Thai lime curry sauce. I had dinner @ Owl & Elm in Yarmouth last night with a friend. We had a table on the newly constructed deck which was quiet and pleasant. After a cocktail we ordered our dinners, my friend ordered the roasted chicken entree with vegetable and a starch. It was very substantial and good. I had ordered the fish en papillote (white fish wrapped in parchment) The size of the entree was not dinner size; it was more appetizer size-nothing else included on the plate. The food was very tasty but minimal. Looking back rather than consuming the meal I should have just sent it back immediately. I did suggest to our server, Gina, that she could pass along my comments to the manager, with little response. Frequently with severs who are responsive they will mention to diners who are ordering that the dinner item is small/large. I certainly don't discount the work involved in serving the public not an easy walk. read more

Owl and Elm is a warm and cozy place. We came on a late Monday night they were very busy. But we got seated very promptly. They are a restaurant of about 6/7 tables plus a cute little bar. Our waitress was very knowledge able about the menu. The house salad with honey glazed nuts with goat cheese and a honey vinaigrette dressing was amazing. My boyfriend had the burger with fries. The fries were served in a small basket which was very cute and cool. Who ever came up with that idea was cleaver. I had the steak and mashed potatoes. The steak was cook exactly to how I ordered med rare and the shallot was a great extra flavor. Our experience here was amazing and will come back and recommend to everyone to try it out. Came for a business lunch with a dozen or so folks. Owl & Elm were very accommodating for our party, despite being a small establishment that doesn't normally take reservations. This fact alone, before even getting to food and service, is worth noting. From the moment we sat down, we were treated with cordial and upbeat staff, who were on top of attending to our questions and needs, despite us consistently talking among ourselves. We ordered drinks and lunch, with the whole process being seamless. I ordered the black bean burger with a side of fries. The brioche bun was to die for, and the burger itself was splendid (not mealy, did not have weird corn chunks, etc), with a consistency you want from a burger. Finally, it's also worth mentioning that we received an order of buffalo cauliflower on the house! Totally unnecessary, but an appreciated gesture. Also, completely delicious (and I dont even normally like cauliflower!). A very positive experience was had by all, I'd recommend for date night, business affairs, or just a casual bite. read more

Owl & Elm. Well. I wish I could give half stars, because it would receive 2.5 not a 2, but I just can't get to a 3 here. I arrived around 5 pm, and it was relatively quiet. Happy hour is literally one hour 4-5, so keep that in mind, and it is limited menu--their prerogative. The space is small, cozy, slightly tight. They use all the space, and it isn't awkward, but it is definitely at max. The decoration is basic, very nice, comfortable, not pub. This is one open room with the kitchen enclosed. We sat around 5:45, our choice, and we had a table down by the kitchen; poor choice. The kitchen is, well, a kitchen. Duh, right? It is loud with dishes clattering and pots clanking. It was very loud and distracting. The heat which emanated from it was uncomfortable. I'm sure seating down toward the bar area was a little better. Also, the waitress station was right by it and the window to pick up food, so I felt I was constantly in the way of the waitstaff. The drinks. Drinks were ok. Subpar. I ordered a manhattan made with Old Overholt and was charged 12 dollars, same price as an up-sell Maker's Mark. This made my jaw drop. The table consensus was that the cocktails were, ok. Nothing special. They didn't taste bad, but they were unremarkable. The staff was quick, courteous, and friendly. They were attentive to our needs. Our friend had ordered a drink, and the wrong one was made for him. This was acknowledged by staff, and he kept the drink. It was not comped. That was disappointing. We are not looking for freebies, but having worked in the bar industry for years, you comp the drink if it was a mistake like that. The food was good. The burger I ordered was done just as I requested. It was juicy, and the bun was nice. The falafel crisps were good and the buffalo cauliflower as well. The Steak Fries, smothered in cheese with steak across the top and onions, was bland. I didn't even know there was steak on the fries. Another party at the table had mussels and was not happy with them. She said the mussels did not taste well and the smell was off-putting. I've never seen her refuse a box to take them home, yet she did. She finished half and was done. With so many other options in the greater Portland area, it is hard to standout. I try and be fair. To judge accordingly. I see a lot of people are giving this restaurant five stars. For that expect the whole package to be top notch. This had many aspects missing. Maybe I'm too critical. I make cocktails at home, drink them at many different bars, and if you are going to have signature cocktails, they better be just that, signature, representative of you and your ability to make a good drink. The consensus at the table was otherwise. Stick with the basics, learn to make a phenomenal manhattan, and then try something different. Consensus at the table was disappointment. read more

I'm can't believe I haven't reviewed Owl & Elm yet as this is one of my favorite local spots. They have a great combination of being a great restaurant that is also super family-friendly. The atmosphere there is one of the most comforting spots I've been to for some reason. The wait staff are always lovely, it's very cozy/dark and comfortable inside and they have an assortment of books and little toys to keep kids busy with. Best of all they advertise in the menu that any dish can be made child-size. No more having to choose between grilled cheese and cheeseburgers every time (although they have those too). read more

I recently stopped into Owl & Elm for the first time. We've tried to come several times before but it was always too busy to get a table. There were a few empty tables but we opted for the bar. The restaurant is really small with 10 or so seats at the bar and another 10 tables scattered around. We started with the french onion soup and a gin lime rickey. We both ordered the fish and chips which came with a house slaw and hand-cut fries. The sauce served with the fish was a unique take on a tarter sauce with a kick.
