He has great pride in his facility and it shows, as well as his kindheartedness. The kennel is spotless, has great dog runs, a safe play area, a spacious and fun cat area, and also a really good groomer. My dog was at Charlie's Doghouse in Crystal Lake for 6 days. It was my first time boarding him…read moreever, and I did a lot of research of where I would send him because I was so nervous. Charlie's DH seemed like it had great reviews, he spent a day there and had fun passing his temperament test, and they offered a cage-free option for overnights which I 100% needed for my dog. I almost didn't go through with boarding him, I tried to find several people to stay at my home for the week, but with scheduling it didn't work out, so I went with Charlie's. I only agreed after an employee promised me that he would make sure the other employees knew how nervous I was and that they would communicate pictures and updates throughout the week as they could. I left on a Friday, I didn't hear from them all weekend. The male employee was the only one to send me pictures and some news about him after the weekend since he wasn't working that weekend, but he said he heard it was busy. I finally got a text from the manager late the last night of his stay regarding a "small scratch" she noticed. Upon picking him up, this was NOT a small and I noticed several other spots along his neck that were raised, felt like bites, and that worried me. The employee also told me that my dog got sick one night, but no one told me this during his stay? I took him to the vet this morning because I was so concerned with the bites, they had to shave his neck region, and we were SHOCKED! Please tell me this is "a small scratch".... Terrifying and I'm so sad I sent my dog here, and he went through that. His neck is shaved, he has marks all over, he's on an ointment, and an oral antibiotic. How did this go "unnoticed"? Wasn't there blood? He has short hair, most of it white in that region. I asked, the employee "doesn't know" if there was blood. Each employee I've spoken to has a different day they "noticed" the "small scratch". There had to have been blood and someone had to have seen this! Why wasn't I contacted WHEN THIS HAPPENED and WHY WASN'T HE TAKEN TO THE VET THEN? Someone is lying or this place was understaffed and unsupervised. As a rescue dog, he already has a very traumatic past, so I am exceptionally sad this happened to him and wouldn't want this happening to another dog. What if my dog was a smaller, weaker breed? Another dog could have been killed, luckily my dog wasn't! Update- I did speak to the owner on the phone this morning after the vet. She was crying and disgusted with what happen- she said she's going to try to look through video footage, but it erases every few days, but she's trying to figure out who is to blame. She said she felt very bad and was very apologetic because she said this is her dream job, and she just wants the dogs to be safe. She seemed sincerely very sorry, so while this was very bad, and I wouldn't want to send my dog back, it also sounds like it's not normal for this place. Idk... She's paying for the vet bill and the 6 day stay not that it will help my dog, but I am thankful he will be okay. I will update this in a week if the vet bill reimbursement check is sent, she has already reimbursed my dog's stay as promised. I wouldn't wish this on any dog.

The cause of the fluid accumulation in her abdomen is still under assessment but her immediate issue with difficulty breathing due to fluid pressure has been alleviated. We were told that her condition is serious, prognosis guarded but we are monitoring at home and administering antibiotics as prescribed and watchinv for symptoms. Office called to check on her status. Staff super caring, Dr Durante's pragmatic explanations and expertise wonderful. Great experience.

One of my favorite memories quickly became one of the worst…read more Early in August I finally make the decision to get a pup. Fell in love with one online (who had siblings) and went in for a visit. Valerie was awesome. Super friendly, helpful (even when I called ahead to ask a few questions) and I fell in love with a great 2.5 month old lab mix. She helps me pick out all the necessities, helps me find a great deal on a kennel. Whole nine yards. Whoot whoot! Fast forward a week and a half and I realize I work too much to give this little pup the life he deserves. After two days of crying and deliberating with friends and family, I decide it will be better for him to find a home with a few more folks in it or one that has someone who is home more. Broke my heart to even have to consider, but I check the Anti Cruelty contract (which Valerie signed) and confirm within 30 days I am allowed to bring the pup back if it isn't a fit. So sad to see the pup go, but I know I can't give him the life he deserves. I show up today with full on tears, sunglasses & my pup and Valerie happens to be working. After taking care of another client, she tells me I cannot return him there, I have to take him downtown to the Anti Cruelty Society (which the contract that we both signed does not state). She also says, in a less than friendly and conversational tone, that if she does take him (even though she just said she couldn't) he will have to be quarantined in a very small cage for 2 days until someone from downtown can come and get him because he can't get the other dogs sick. At this point I share that when I got him, he had giarda and needed meds, so since the meds were done, it was a good idae to quarantine him so he did not pick up another virus. She then states that I will not get any refund on the adoption fee (even though the contract states otherwise) if I return him to her. Another group approaches the register, and then she announces that I will be placed on a No Adopt List FOR LIFE (yes, that was yelled, while others were staring) because I returned the dog. I had nothing to say at that point, but afterwards realized... would they really refuse someone from adopting a pet if the pet wasn't the right fit for them? Isn't that the responsible thing to do vs letting him loose or giving him to a family that wasn't able to care for him? We then get to the point where I simply ask for the address downtown. She says they will only give me half my adoption fee back but that might be a better deal for me since I wasn't keeping him. I mention that's not how I read the contract and she argues, but pulls out her copy to confirm that it doesn't say anything about a partial refund. She finally passes over the address to the Anti Cruelty downtown. As I am picking up the pup (he's not a fan of walking on the leash just yet) and all of his things, she asks if I am going there right now. Confused, I confirmed I was headed there. She then goes on a loud tangent about how if I didn't go right now it was her legal right to confiscate the dog, since I clearly didn't want the dog. What? On what grounds? Didn't she just say the quarantine cages were small and it would take 2 days of him being in there before he could be let out? Why would she do/say that? Keep in mind, I'm still in full on tears at this point making the choice to give my pup a better life, and being read some riot act about what she can/can't, would/wouldn't do. AND she doesn't want the dog, but will confiscate him from me. Huh?! One of the hardest decisions (but doing right by my pup) became an awful showcase of human compassion, decency and concern for an animals well being.
