A hidden oasis with lots of potential! I recently visited on a weekday in late July and despite the…read morerain, there wasn't too much mud to wade through. We had been planning on playing the 9-basket disc golf course when we got to MI, knowing that it was a very low rating on DGCR, but were pleasantly surprised. I am happy to say I've been here, done that, but probably a one-time visit for me. From the pictures, you can see it's obviously a lush and clean park with dozens of activities available for children and adults. Most of these installments are a little run down, even in the middle of summer tourism, particularly the markers that tell you where the tee is (some are in pieces, some are plain missing). Luckily, we had enough service to search it up on a dedicated disc golf site and were well on our way. Main upsides include a clean bathroom, picnic and barbecue area, visible baskets, and beautiful landscaping. Downsides? The overgrowth around the edges of the park, where all 9 tees are situated. I lost my favorite disc in the 8ft shrubs, and some tees were completely in the shrubs. Also, this park was a little difficult to find as there aren't signs for it (unless you're coming up one particular path). So after an afternoon of walking the paths to Arch Rock and Fort Holmes, we struggled to get here without the help of a sometimes spotty Google Maps. Pro tip: download the Google Map of the island before you go walking.

With Michigans wide range and disparate landscapes, I was sure I was gonna get some sweet terrain to challenge my disc golf savvy. What I got at great turtle park was a bit disappointing. This park is good for your mid range or putter but it is flat. I would say you could probably make all the shots without having to bust out the driver, with maybe the exception of one hole. The baskets are not cemented into the ground, there is no tee off sign for any of the pins, and there aren't platforms. Rather, kitchen tiles mark the starting points for all the holes. These disappointments for a serious disc golf fan, make the park a three. The park itself is gorgeous and in the middle to high park of the island away from most of the tourism and people, so that's worth a few stars. Overall, however, the disc golf part of the park really soured my experience as it seemed like an afterthought. I rated this park three stars because: 1star: bathroom on premises. Nice. 1star: park itself is a cool spot, away from tourists. Good family/community area. 1star: disc golf here. Something's better than nothing. 0star: disc golf course missing tee signs and platforms, baskets are free standing, showing the non-commital nature of whoever put them in. 0star: hole nine missing tile that tells you where to start, all disc golf baskets within sight of the starting point, no sweet Michigan terrain involved, flat course.

We visited Hoeft State Park for the first time last weekend. It wasn't our favorite state park we…read morehave visited but it was still very nice. The sites are very small and they are not very level. We were on site 72 and we had to move our tent three different times to get it staked into the ground. The site was very unlevel and rocky. There are a handful of nice sites throughout the park but it felt very crowded because the sites are so small and everyone is so close together. They do have a bathhouse with showers and toilets. They do not have an updated shower house but it did the job. The staff were very friendly. It was a quiet park because it is so secluded. It is right along the shore of Lake Huron. There is beach access. The water was warm in mid July. The cell service is spotty if you have AT&T. I don't think we would camp here again but we were glad to visit and check it off our list!

I grew up on Lake Erie and lived on Lake Ontario for a little while, so I'm not used to seeing such bright blue-green water at a Great Lake. (Erie & Ontario are very brown) Aside from a perfect Lake Huron experience, this is just a nice park in general. Plenty of places for kids to play (including playgrounds), hiking trails, and other activities. All the facilities are in acceptable conditions and there weren't very many people there when we were, which made it feel like we had the park to ourselves (on a Sunday!)... There is a fee to get in. The ranger told us we could pay $9 and have access to ALL Michigan state parks, which of course we did.

I've been coming to the lighthouse since I was a kid. It's been a few years since I've been up, but the people who are looking after it now are great, and the campground is something that should be saved from the huge and growing dolomite mine that is encroaching on its borders.

We found a couple cooking on a grill near the building later. They told us we shouldn't drink the water. Our campsite was beautiful, there were flush toilets and showers. If I were to return I'd stay longer. It really is in a pretty remote location. There is a mine nearby and warning signs about blasting. The light house museum was small but well maintained. One of the best campgrounds I've been to.

Beautiful state park in a tiny Northern Michigan town that is more known for fishing than for being…read morea touristy hot spot. I stopped up here recently during fall color peak. The park was alight with brilliant shades of red and amber leaves falling from the trees. It made for a beautiful drive to see the color. The park does require a star park recreation pass or sticker on your vehicle to drive around, but the office appeared closed for the season, yet the park was still open, so it didn't matter. It's a nice sized park and is well-maintained, with plenty of nice spots for taking in scenery, lake views on one side, restrooms, and picnic areas. I recommended it for anyone who loves nature. Visit in the fall while the trees are turning color, yet weather seems temperate.

This was our first and last stay at Trailside Campground…read more We rented Cabin #3, which is only about 25 yards from the pavilion. It was Friday, July 24, and there were no scheduled concerts or events. Around 5 or 6 people, including the owner, were partying in the pavilion with extremely loud music, strobe lights, and a disco ball until the early morning hours. The cheap curtains in the cabin did nothing to block the flashing lights. At about 1:40 a.m., I politely walked over and asked if they could just turn the music down a little. I never asked them to shut it off--I simply wanted it lowered enough that we could get some sleep. The owner's response was unbelievable. He appeared to be intoxicated and immediately came storming toward me yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey!" He then told me, "This isn't a KOA or a family campground. This is going to go on until 3 or 4 in the morning," and said he'd give me a refund. He wasn't calm or respectful--he was aggressive and confrontational over a simple, reasonable request. The next morning, another camper stopped me in the bathroom and said she felt bad for how the owner spoke to me. She told me another camper was so upset after witnessing it that he left the pavilion. She also mentioned the owner had been drinking all day because they were celebrating the one-year anniversary of buying the campground. We weren't the only people bothered by the noise. Campers across from us were complaining too. If your campground isn't family-friendly and you plan on having loud parties until 3 or 4 in the morning, that's your choice. But be upfront about it so guests know what they're paying for. More importantly, don't treat paying customers with disrespect when they make a polite request. Customer service starts at the top, and unfortunately our experience with the owner ensured we'll never be back.

The dogs enjoyed the leash free dog runs that are available. It was a vacation for them. The restroom building was clean and well maintained and just a short walk from the cabin. The playground for the kiddies was very cool and the looked like they were having a blast I ventured off and discovered their walking trail in the woods that was refreshing. Sure beats walking state park campground.

Husband and wife caregivers, they live in a beautiful 5th wheel and we had the pleasure of getting to camp next to them. Very sweet and friendly couple who soon will be headed down to Florida for the winter. Park is so well maintained by them, and her hub is always on his tractor cutting the lawn or at work doing something. Bathroom's and showers spotless. Nice sites and each has a nice picnic table and fire pit, firewood sold at the office. We had a pull through site, very accommodating, good water pressure. Tent camping, swing set for the young ones. There is a restaurant across the highway which was very good. Quiet place with lots of mature trees for shade. Very close to town, so convenient. About a 25 min drive to Mackinaw City and the bridge, make a day of taking a boat ride to Mackinaw Island. We enjoyed our stay at this great campground and recommend coming here. We will return!! We've been in here a few times, and they can handle longer trailers (with reservation) and offer full hook-up sites that are well maintained. The owner lives on site and is very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and local businesses, and it's just a short distance from town. We always look forward to our trips there, and are planning our next chance to go back.
