I've been getting lumber and hardware at Woodstock Building Supply for 4 years now. A few days ago, however, I had the single worst experience taking a lumber delivery in over forty years of taking such deliveries. The delivery person, who identified himself as Abdul, was abusive, aggressive, and physically threatening. Whether he misheard my response when he asked where I wanted the material, I can't say, but he got out of the truck and walked thirty feet to get nose to nose with me and tell me to "back off." He refused to offload the material, opting to continue his diatribe and threatening demeanor, until I had unloaded half of it. I attempted to call the office during this and was unable to get through. I called afterward and left a message for Chris to please call me to resolve this episode, but heard nothing back. I called three more times, and each time Abdul answered the phone and informed me that Chris was "indisposed." I called again and managed to get Chris on the phone, and when I explained the incident, his initial response was defensive and essentially telling me that I was obviously mistaken because they've never had a complaint. I explained that I've dealt with their organization many times with great results and this was an outlier, and he relented somewhat and said he was "hearing me and talking it very seriously" and that he'd look into it and get back to me. It has been over a week and no "getting back to me" has occurred. The bottom line for me here is that Woodstock Building Supply charged me fifty dollars to deliver five sheets of plywood (total charge was $537) sent an aggressive, confrontational, abusive, emotionally unstable person to my home, and now refuse to be accountable to a paying customer. Paying for abuse? No thanks.

Our contractor--who's worked with Jeff for 20+ years--offered to provide free labor to replace the stone if Jeff took it back but Jeff refused to take his product back or stand behind his product. His website claims to sell "the finest, high-quality materials," but this stone didn't last a year. A stone expert confirmed it's low-quality with weak veining, and sealing wouldn't fix it. Jeff was asked to visit the site and advise on repairs--he refused and has stopped responding to calls and emails. Poor product, poor service, and absolutely no accountability.

They have electronics, computers, and miscellaneous mechanical stuff (metal stock, plastic stock, etc) I believe they also deal in scrap metals by the pound, if you happen to have a ton of scrap brass rods or something. There's a cool vibe here where local artists (that, I assume, have used parts from P&T Surplus to create sculpture and other mixed-media art) have pieces on display. They also have a really large section of obsolete computers and parts, which is good if you need to replace an ISA card or some other kind of 10+ year old computer part that nobody seems to sell any more. To me, surplus stores are about picking up obsolete electronics for experimentation and parts, not art, but hey, if that's what keeps this place going, then I'm happy for it. The prices are not marked on a lot of the surplus items, so you have to go ask at the counter. The prices can be a little high, but luckily they are quite nice there, and sometimes you can dicker with them a little. One thing that is a little weird is that a lot of the electronic surplus seems to come from IBM (some of it is still labelled) and I always wonder if they came upon it honestly. I think they probably have some kind of deal to purchase the IBM scrap, but you never know. Anyway, there really are no other options in the area for an electronics junk-hound like me. If you are interested in surplus and electronics, you owe it to yourself to stop by.
